When were MIRRORS first
discovered?
Justus von Liebig
German chemist, in 1835
Who officially invented the MIRROR?
He found a way to coat glass with a
thin layer of metallic silver by means
of chemical reaction called “silvering”.
A mirror is an overlooked tool for
musicians…
Plane mirror
• Any object that has a smooth,
Shiny, flat surface where almost all light
striking the surface is reflected.
• The reflected light forms an image.
MIRRORS
Image – a copy of an object formed by light.
REFLECTION
• An interaction when light hits the surface
of an object and bounces.
REFRACTION
• An interaction when light enters the
boundary of two transparent objects and
bends.
TWO POSSIBLE INTERACTIONS BETWEEN
LIGHT AND AN OBJECT:
Luminous Objects
• Objects that produce their own light.
– sun, other stars, light bulbs, burning objects
Illuminated / Opaque Objects
• Objects that reflect light.
– moon, other planets, books, other things
REFLECTION OF LIGHT
Light Ray
• A single line of light coming from a point
source with an arrowhead pointing to its
direction.
• Several rays from a beam of light are
approximately parallel to one another.
REFLECTION OF LIGHT
The amount of reflected light
depends on TWO FACTORS:
1) Nature of the material
2) Texture of the surface of the medium
(smooth or rough)
REFLECTION OF LIGHT
LAW of REFLECTION states that:
The Angle of Incidence is equal to the Angle of Reflection
Ɵi Ɵr
Ɵi = Ɵr
A B
normal line
Incident ray Reflected ray
Regular or Specular Reflection
• When the reflecting surface is smooth, the
reflected rays of a beam of light are parallel
to one another.
• Polished surfaces like mirrors and bright
metals produce regular reflection.
TYPES of REFLECTION
Irregular or Diffuse Reflection
• If the reflecting surface is rough, the normal
with respect to the surface are NOT parallel
and consequently the light rays are reflected
in ALL directions.
TYPES of REFLECTION
Unleashing the Power of Minds + Skills…
Direction: Describe the images formed by
plane mirror and show an understanding of
reversal effect in mirrors by writing laterally
inverted letters and words.
Note: You can also try to use your android
phones for the image reversal.
PLANE MIRRORS
Your image is not
exactly like you. It is
reversed from left to
right or Laterally
reversed or Left-right
reversal…
The word AMBULANCE is laterally reversed, so
that it can easily be read through a rearview
mirror.
Virtual Image
• An image that does not exist in the place
where it appears to be.
PLANE MIRRORS
Your image seems to be of the same
distance behind the mirror as you are
in front. But there is no image behind
the mirror…
A person’s image is produced by a plane mirror. It also
shows how virtual image is formed.
Cellphones have mirrors and prisms inside…

Editor's Notes

  1. On our previous lessons, we learned about electromagnetic spectrum. One of the most common among these electromagnetic waves is the visible light. Light is form of energy that you can see! Every day, light waves reflect on objects and into your eyes, which allows you to see the objects. Light also helps you identify objects both near and far.

Every day, light waves reflect on objects and into your eyes, which allows you to see the objects. Light also helps you identify objects both near and far. Now, before we proceed to our topic today, let’s have an activity first about the properties and behavior of light. This would be our springboard for today. Are you ready? Okay, let’s start the ball rolling!
  3. Now let us check first our vocabularies. Learners kindly get your dictionary (on hand/ on phone) to look up the definition of the following words: light | luminous | reflection
  4. Have you noticed the word “AMBULANCE” in an ambulance car? How is it written? Did you ever wonder why it is written that way? When you look in the mirror, have you noticed something interesting about you and your image in the mirror? If you look into a mirror and you raised your right arm, what hand do you think will your image raise? We will find the answers to these questions as we go through in today’s lesson.

  9. When were mirrors invented? Reflective surfaces made of polished obsidian are the oldest “mirrors” in the archaeological record dating back as far as 4000 BCE. The first evidence of mirrors as grooming tools dates to 5th century BCE, in illustrations of elegant Greeks at hand mirrors. A discovery by the great German chemist, Justus von Liebig in 1835, made modern mirrors widely available. He found a way to coat glass with a thin layer of metallic silver by means of chemical reaction later called “silvering”. Don’t you know that a mirror is an overlooked tool for musicians during their music practice? It helps musicians to correct bad habits in their techniques, posture, and form during the classical age up to present.

  12. Describe the images formed by plane mirror and show an understanding of reversal effect in mirrors by writing laterally inverted letters and words. You can also try to use your android phones for the image reversal. Let each group answer the guide questions afterwards.
  13. If you view an image of yourself in a plane mirror (perhaps a bathroom mirror), you will quickly notice that there is an apparent left-right reversal of the image. That is, if you raise your left hand, you will notice that the image raises what would seem to be its right hand. If you raise your right hand, the image raises what would seem to be its left hand. This is often termed left-right reversal.
  14. The letters in front of the ambulance are written laterally. This is because when seen in rear view mirror by another vehicle, the image of the word would get inverted, letting the driver read the word properly so that he can provide way to the ambulance.
  15. The letters in front of the ambulance are written laterally. This is because when seen in rear view mirror by another vehicle, the image of the word would get inverted, letting the driver read the word properly so that he can provide way to the ambulance.
  16. A plane mirror makes an image of objects in front of the mirror; the image appears to be behind the plane in which the mirror lies .
  17. During emergencies, we are aware that ambulance is the best option to transport patients, why do the letters in front of the ambulance are written laterally? When you are driving and you’ve noticed that there is a blowing siren ambulance behind you, as a driver, what are you going to do?
  18. In this digital world and as part of digital generation, what do you think makes us able to generate images upon using our cellphones, especially when taking “selfies”? Cellphones have mirrors and prisms inside placed at the correct angle to reflect light from the scene into the lens and sensor.
  19. When light hits an object, every part of that object reflects light in all direction. Some of the reflected light reaches our eyes. Thus, we can see an object. The characteristics of image formed by a plane mirror is always erect (same orientation as the object), laterally reversed, same size as the object, virtual (found to be apparently behind the mirror), and same distance from the mirror as the object.
  20. Describe the images formed by plane mirror and show an understanding of reversal effect in mirrors by writing laterally inverted letters and words. You can also try to use your android phones for the image reversal. Let each group answer the guide questions afterwards.
