How do we
see objects
around us?
Will our
eyes be able
to see in
the dark?
Where do
we get
light?
A luminous object is one that produces light.
An illuminated object is one that reflects light.
Luminous Objects Illuminated Objects
LUMINOUS AND
ILLUMINATED OBJECTS
We see things because they
reflect light into our eyes:
Homework
4 PICS 1 WORD
REFLECTION
Activity: MIRROR, MIRROR ON THE WALL
THE MAN IN THE MIRROR
Activity: MY IMAGE AND ME
Directions: Analyze the nature of image
formed by a plane mirror.
1. What is the size of image
formed by a plane mirror?
- same size as the object
2. What type of image is
formed by plane mirrors?
- virtual image
3. Where is the image of an
object in a plane mirror?
- behind the mirror
4. Compare the distance of the man to
the mirror and the distance of his
image from the mirror.
- the distance of the man from the
mirror is the same as the distance of
his image from the mirror.
REFLECTION OF LIGHT
• Reflection is the
bouncing off light rays
when it hits a smooth
surface
• Example: a reflection in
a mirror.
2 TYPES OF IMAGES FORMED
BY REFLECTING SURFACE
• REAL IMAGE - always inverted and is
formed by actual rays of light. It appears
in front of the mirror and can be
projected on the screen.
• VIRTUAL IMAGE - always erect and
formed by apparent rays of light. Virtual
image appears behind the mirror.
PROPERTIES OF AN IMAGE
FORMED BY PLANE MIRROR
• The image obtained is virtual.
• The image is erect.
• The size of the image is the same as
the size of the object.
• The distance between the image
obtained is the same as the distance
between the object from the mirror.
Characteristics of Image
Formed in a Plane Mirror
REFLECTION FROM A MIRROR:
Incident ray

Reflected ray
Angle of

Angle of
reflection
Mirror
The Law of Reflection
Angle of incidence = Angle of reflection
The
same !!!
The incident ray, normal line and the
reflected ray all lie in the same plane
Activity: HOW DO I LOOK?
Directions: Analyze the given
pictures below and answer the
questions that follow.
A. B.
APPLICATION
1. What do you think is the reason why
an “AMBULANCE” word is written in
reverse in an ambulance car?
- so that the driver of any vehicle
in its front can instantly read the
inverted word in their rearview mirror
and give way on an emergency.
APPLICATION
2. How do you write the word
“AMBULANCE” when seen in front
of a plane mirror?
ASSESS WHAT YOU HAVE
LEARNED
1.What law states that angle of
incidence is equal to the angle of
reflection?
A. Law of Inertia
B. Law of Reflection
C. Law of Acceleration
D. Charles’ Law
2. If you stand three feet in front of a
plane mirror, how far away would you
see yourself in the mirror?
A. 1.5 ft
B. 3 ft
C. 6 ft
D. 12 ft
3. Which of the following best describes the
image formed by a plane mirror?
A. virtual, inverted and enlarged
B. real, inverted and reduced
C. virtual, upright and the same size as
object
D. real, upright and the same size as
object
4. When the image of an object is seen in a
plane mirror, the distance from the mirror
to the image depends on _____.
A. the wavelength of light used for
viewing.
B. the distance from the object to the
mirror.
C. the distance of both the observer
and the object to the mirror.
D. the source of light.
5. All of these are properties of an image
formed by a plane mirror except
A. The image obtained is virtual.
B. The image is erect.
C. The size of the image is bigger than
the size of the object
D. The distance between the image
obtained is same as the distance
between the object from the
mirror.
ASSIGNMENT
1. What are the two kinds of
curved mirror?
2. Observed the images formed by
the two kinds curved mirrors.
Write at least three of your
observations in your notebook.
