THE KEY TO BUILDING
LASTING
RELATIONSHIP
Communication plays a very vital role in
relationships .Aside from verbal
language , there are many ways by
which a person can communicate.
What is important is to consider that
the massage sender is able to put
across the sentiment the he or she
wishes to express and the receiver of
the message is also capable of
understanding the message.
According to American author David Berlo,
in every communication event, there are
four basic elements the sender, the
message, the channel, and the receive. The
diagram bellow illustrates these elements.
A common source of disagreement and
conflict between two people may be
summarized in two statements:
“You are not listening” and “You do not
understand”.
Communication is human instinct. Even when
it seems almost impossible to communicate
with other, still you can find away to connect
with other people. Do not take this unique
capability of yours for granted.
When you care about another person,
you should always try to listen intently.
This is one way to show value ,respect ,
and importance to that person. Here are
some concepts that you can use to
practice Active listening
1.MIRRORING What happens
when you stand in front of a mirror?
You see your own reflection doing
the same things that you are doing;
the image imitates your movements,
facial expression, and action.
2. PARAPHASING OR
SYNTHESIZING You know that
you are listening to someone when you
can actually repeat what that order
person has said
3. SUMMARIZING OR
SYNTHESIZING
If you want to assure understanding of what one
has said, you can always summarize or synthesize
that person’s speech. By asking such question as;
“What do you mean? ”Why did you say that?” ,
“How do you know?” , or “Is this what you mean?”
,”why did you say that?”, How do you know?” or “is
this what you mean….?” , you get better grasp of
4. ASKING CLARIFYING QUESTIONS
OR PROBING.
Finally, if you do not understand what your friend
is saying . You can simply ask for clarification. By
asking such question as; “ What do you mean? ”
Why did you say that?” , “How do you know?” , or
“Is this what you mean?” ,”why did you say that?”,
How do you know?” or “is this what you mean….?” ,
you get better grasp of what your friend wants to

  • 10. 2. PARAPHASING OR SYNTHESIZING You know that you are listening to someone when you can actually repeat what that order person has said
  • 11. 3. SUMMARIZING OR SYNTHESIZING If you want to assure understanding of what one has said, you can always summarize or synthesize that person’s speech. By asking such question as; “What do you mean? ”Why did you say that?” , “How do you know?” , or “Is this what you mean?” ,”why did you say that?”, How do you know?” or “is this what you mean….?” , you get better grasp of
