2. Spacing Out
■ Spacing out means that you are in your own world, we are always caught up in our
thoughts.We are ignoring the person who is speaking to us.

3. Pretend Listening
■ Pretend listing is more common.You aren’t still paying as much attention but you are
pretending that you are knowing the conversation and saying things that you don’t
even know what you are saying. Normally the person will have a hint that you are not
paying attention. Now the person knows that he or she is not important to hear.

4. Selective Listening
■ Selective listening is where you only pay attention to the part of the conversation you
want to hear.You want to hear the part that interests you.

5. Word Listening
■ Word listening is that we actually pay attention to what the person is saying but we are
not listening to the persons feelings, or the true meaning behind the words.

6. Self-centered listening
■ Self centered listening happens when we see everything from our own point of view.
Instead of standing in another’s shoes, we want them to stand in ours.We assume
they feel the same way we do.

7. Self Centered Listening: Judging
■ Judging means we listen to others but we make judgments about them and what
they’re saying. If you are judging then you may not be listening.

8. Self Centered Listening: Advise
■ Advise means when we give advise drawn from out own experience.

9. Self Centered Listening: Probing
■ Probing occurs when you are trying to dig up emotions before people are ready to
share them. If you are asking a lot of questions and not getting very far, you’re
probably probing. Some people aren’t prepared to share their emotions.
