STAGE 2
RESEARCH +
EXPERIMENTS
Your name here
 You MUST conduct a questionnaire/survey/interview or a combination of all three.
Summarise this and add in any other primary research you feel is appropriate.
 What kind of short film would you prefer, and why?
 I more prefer the idea of a horror film, as it would involve more action being included
init and also I believe that it will make an audience seem more tense/drawn into
viewing it.
 I think you should make a horror film as not only it will be more fun for you to create
it, also I think that the audience, like me will find it more tense.
 How long would you expect a short film to last?
 I would expect your short film to last up to 1 minute long, as you wouldn’t want it to
last to long as it would then be classed more as a small film
 A short film should be no more than 90seconds long, so I believe that your game
should be no longer than 90 seconds.
 Research viewing figures, sales figures, demographic and psychographic info.
Look up article, features or stories related to your potential audience
From researching different reviews and sales figures from horror
films I have seen that there is a wide audience of people who like
horror based films, these are more based as secondary audience.
The secondary audience seem to like a variety of different horror
films from v scary, to only just scary, they also seem to have to be
a certain type, as even some of the most popular horror films have
been very heavily critised by secondary audience.
 For this you should summarise your primary and secondary research, through this
you should then be able to produce an audience outline that you intend to target.
For this you could also produce an audience profile.
 From looking at the research of which I have carried out my primary audience
seem to be more preferring towards the idea of me making a horror film and for it
to be up t 90 seconds long, this I think Is my plan to make a horror short film and
also I believe that the time range being up to 90 seconds Is also a suitable
maximum time as I don’t want it to drag on and on as the audience may become
board of it/the repetition of the ‘light on off’ and skip to the end, I don’t want this to
happen, I want them to stayed interested in the film and I want them to want to
watch the film until the end and not skip any parts, I want them to feel as if they
have become a part of the film/become intrigued in the film.
 Given your idea generation and your audience research, what sort of content
would you define as the appropriate. Consider issues of taste, certification [BBFC
might be a good starting point for this], etc. Look at what you’d like to include and
what you are allowed to include.
 From the research of which I have done on I can safely make the assumption that
my primary audience is more based around the idea of me creating a horror
based short film, as they said that they more prefer the idea of a short film. I also
know that I should be careful on how long I make my short film as it is said that it
should be no more than 90 seconds long, as this is what everyone of my primary
audience said. My secondary audience is a bit different compared to my primary
audience as they to like horror films but from looking at reviews It seems as if they
prefer the idea of a specific type of horror film, like it has to be aimed at them
specific, so to get both audiences in my audience range I am going to have to
make it so it fits into both audiences well and also can appeal to a new/wider
audience.
 Research potential production techniques you might want to use
or feel would be most appropriate – these can be related to
camera, editing, story, sound, etc
 You should look at a minimum of 3 related products in your
research.
 You should collect clips/still images/how to guides/etc that might
help you. When watching scenes from films, etc you could also
ask potential target audience what they think.
 You will need to add extra slides!
 With each technique you should assess whether you can use it or
how you might employ or why you may want to disregard it
completely
I impartially like this example of a short horror film as it is an already existing example
of what I would like to make, its not to complicated, sticks to the point of it being a short
scary/horror film which is god as it doesn’t make it to be that complicated and at the
end of the day.. It does its job at scaring the audience. If you hadn’t noticed already you
will see that this is actually a screen grab from the video, I chose this scene as I believe
it is showing a effective camera angle(over shoulder/long shot) that is showing behind
the main actor along with the surrounding she is in and obviously the dark looming
person/object which I believe is a good method of getting in two camera angles in one
scene.
I also like the setting for this short
film, as it really gets to the point and
doesn’t distract the audience, as
there isn’t much of the background for
them to look at and they will be more
focused on what is happening on the
video. The background is basic, the
white walls make your eye get drawn
to the looming object/person at the
end of the hallway.
This here is another example of a scary/horror based short film and I again like the way of
which it is set and filmed. The main feature I like about this short film is the use of camera
angles, for example I like the way how the camera shoots bac and forth from different
perspectives i.e. from the women's point of view/ then to the chests point of view, with it
going back between these two views at quick fire rotation, this is the main thing which I
believe really does build up the tension throughout the short film, also making the audience
feel that they are part of the film, with either camera angle it is viewing at. This is a tool that I
feel I would definitely like to use in my production work myself as It would help me to be able
to draw in the audience more. I am also fond of the way that the setting Is in the same room,
which is good as it setting keeps the setting familiar, which is good as it doesn’t confuse the
audience, making them have to familiarise themselves with the background
again.
This is my last example of a screen grab of an already existing scary/horror short film, I
chose to use this screengrab of the video as I liked the camera angle that is being used
in this part of the video, I feel that it really is showing the expression of the main
character and is also showing a slight glimpse of the background behind her, which is
good as it showing the surroundings that she is in, but not focused enough that it is
drawing the audiences eye away from the main character it is just in the rite frame to
make it visible behind the main character.
EXPERIMENTS
Camera/Editing/Audio Experiments
Be prepared to add extra slides
 This is In fact an already recorded film
clip from ‘Shaun of the dead', so in
actual fact there isn’t a way of which I
did record this, but I did do the editing
down and also added in the audio as
this clip did not have any audio in it.
Personally I found this to be quite an
easy clip to add in sound effects on as I
was able to do so easily , this is
because the majority of the sound
effects of which needed to be added in
where sounds like … footsteps/fridge
humming/car alarm/running ext.
 What elements of your experiments will you include in your final
product?
I feel that I worked well with the filming for my experiment
production work as I already had a good idea of which I wanted to
create for my experiment and I was quick to get on with the filming
process for the production. Despite this, I feel that there isn’t really
any features of my experiment that I will be using in my final
production work, this is because my experiment isn’t actually what
I wanted to make for my actual production. However, despite this
there is some camera angles of which I believe would be seen as
good examples to include in my final production work, as I feel
they would benefit from being in a short horror film.
 I found the editing of this clip to be
quite easy as there wasn’t really that
much editing to be done to this, but
then again I suppose that it was meant
to be an exercise to refresh my mind
the whole time. Infect the only real
editing of which I had to do was the
idea of cutting some of the scenes
down a bit so they became slightly
shorter , this Is because I found that
some of the scenes weren’t going to fit
with the audio as the scenes were
running longer than what the audio
was, basically so that if I didn’t edit it
then the audio would have cut out
before that part/scene had finished, it
just wouldn’t work so I edited some of
the scenes down so that they would fit
in with the audio perfectly, if not almost.
 What elements of your experiments will you include in your final
product?
I feel that I worked well with my experiment production, there is a few
different techniques that I feel I might use in my production work, some of
the which might include the idea of the variety of camera angles of which
were used in my experiments. I am fond of the camera angles that show the
expression of peoples face, as it really is a thing that will grab the attention
of the audience which will make it to be much more appealing towards the
target audience and other people who will chose to view my short film.
 I found putting the audio for this clip also to be
quite easy as after editing down the clip, I
realised that they where just ordinary sound
effects such as walking/running/fridge
humming/shop door/car alarm. These where all
sound effects that I was able to pick up very
easily from pretty much any kind of free sound
effect website, in my opinion I believe that I
would have preferred the idea of doing
something which was a bit more complicated
but then again I suppose it was more of an idea
to refresh my memory and teach me new skills,
so due to this I think I found it to be quite easy
and managed to complete it without difficulty.
In my opinion though I believe that the audio
was the easiest as all I had to really do was add
in some audio/sound effects into the correct
place and run/play it to make sure that it fits
properly without any altercation.
 What elements of your experiments will you include in your final
product?
 When it came to putting in my audio for my experiment, I put my video
into premier and slowly added in my sound effects, I feel on a whole I
worked well with putting in the audio for my work. This is because I was
easily able to add in the sound effects of which I needed to i.e. the
walking sound effects for when they where approaching the door, these
kind of sound effects where easy to find as I was able to find them on
various different sound effect websites. I feel that when it comes to my
actual production I feel that I will be mostly using the same sound effects
that I used for my experiments, as I feel they are generally good sound
effects of which I believe I could make good use out of with my
production work
 List all the potential constraints that might affect or limit your production, you
should consider issues from each of these categories:
 Time/Personnel/Cost/Technical/Location/Organisational
Not being able to film at the set location of which you had agreed to film.
Not everyone agreeing on a time for filming.
Being short people when it is time to film.
Forgetting yourself the time and day you are filming.
Needing to buy props but forgetting/not having the money to buy the props of which I
might require.
Breaking the equipment(will cost money to get it fixed).
Not getting everyone organised together e.g.;
Turing up to wrong location.
People turning up for filming at different times.
Forgetting to bring equipment i.e. camera/props/tri pod.

short film rotation-//research

  • 2.  You MUST conduct a questionnaire/survey/interview or a combination of all three. Summarise this and add in any other primary research you feel is appropriate.  What kind of short film would you prefer, and why?  I more prefer the idea of a horror film, as it would involve more action being included init and also I believe that it will make an audience seem more tense/drawn into viewing it.  I think you should make a horror film as not only it will be more fun for you to create it, also I think that the audience, like me will find it more tense.  How long would you expect a short film to last?  I would expect your short film to last up to 1 minute long, as you wouldn’t want it to last to long as it would then be classed more as a small film  A short film should be no more than 90seconds long, so I believe that your game should be no longer than 90 seconds.
  • 3.  Research viewing figures, sales figures, demographic and psychographic info. Look up article, features or stories related to your potential audience From researching different reviews and sales figures from horror films I have seen that there is a wide audience of people who like horror based films, these are more based as secondary audience. The secondary audience seem to like a variety of different horror films from v scary, to only just scary, they also seem to have to be a certain type, as even some of the most popular horror films have been very heavily critised by secondary audience.
  • 4.  For this you should summarise your primary and secondary research, through this you should then be able to produce an audience outline that you intend to target. For this you could also produce an audience profile.  From looking at the research of which I have carried out my primary audience seem to be more preferring towards the idea of me making a horror film and for it to be up t 90 seconds long, this I think Is my plan to make a horror short film and also I believe that the time range being up to 90 seconds Is also a suitable maximum time as I don’t want it to drag on and on as the audience may become board of it/the repetition of the ‘light on off’ and skip to the end, I don’t want this to happen, I want them to stayed interested in the film and I want them to want to watch the film until the end and not skip any parts, I want them to feel as if they have become a part of the film/become intrigued in the film.
  • 5.  Given your idea generation and your audience research, what sort of content would you define as the appropriate. Consider issues of taste, certification [BBFC might be a good starting point for this], etc. Look at what you’d like to include and what you are allowed to include.  From the research of which I have done on I can safely make the assumption that my primary audience is more based around the idea of me creating a horror based short film, as they said that they more prefer the idea of a short film. I also know that I should be careful on how long I make my short film as it is said that it should be no more than 90 seconds long, as this is what everyone of my primary audience said. My secondary audience is a bit different compared to my primary audience as they to like horror films but from looking at reviews It seems as if they prefer the idea of a specific type of horror film, like it has to be aimed at them specific, so to get both audiences in my audience range I am going to have to make it so it fits into both audiences well and also can appeal to a new/wider audience.
  • 6.  Research potential production techniques you might want to use or feel would be most appropriate – these can be related to camera, editing, story, sound, etc  You should look at a minimum of 3 related products in your research.  You should collect clips/still images/how to guides/etc that might help you. When watching scenes from films, etc you could also ask potential target audience what they think.  You will need to add extra slides!  With each technique you should assess whether you can use it or how you might employ or why you may want to disregard it completely
  • 7. I impartially like this example of a short horror film as it is an already existing example of what I would like to make, its not to complicated, sticks to the point of it being a short scary/horror film which is god as it doesn’t make it to be that complicated and at the end of the day.. It does its job at scaring the audience. If you hadn’t noticed already you will see that this is actually a screen grab from the video, I chose this scene as I believe it is showing a effective camera angle(over shoulder/long shot) that is showing behind the main actor along with the surrounding she is in and obviously the dark looming person/object which I believe is a good method of getting in two camera angles in one scene. I also like the setting for this short film, as it really gets to the point and doesn’t distract the audience, as there isn’t much of the background for them to look at and they will be more focused on what is happening on the video. The background is basic, the white walls make your eye get drawn to the looming object/person at the end of the hallway.
  • 8. This here is another example of a scary/horror based short film and I again like the way of which it is set and filmed. The main feature I like about this short film is the use of camera angles, for example I like the way how the camera shoots bac and forth from different perspectives i.e. from the women's point of view/ then to the chests point of view, with it going back between these two views at quick fire rotation, this is the main thing which I believe really does build up the tension throughout the short film, also making the audience feel that they are part of the film, with either camera angle it is viewing at. This is a tool that I feel I would definitely like to use in my production work myself as It would help me to be able to draw in the audience more. I am also fond of the way that the setting Is in the same room, which is good as it setting keeps the setting familiar, which is good as it doesn’t confuse the audience, making them have to familiarise themselves with the background again.
  • 9. This is my last example of a screen grab of an already existing scary/horror short film, I chose to use this screengrab of the video as I liked the camera angle that is being used in this part of the video, I feel that it really is showing the expression of the main character and is also showing a slight glimpse of the background behind her, which is good as it showing the surroundings that she is in, but not focused enough that it is drawing the audiences eye away from the main character it is just in the rite frame to make it visible behind the main character.
  • 11.  This is In fact an already recorded film clip from ‘Shaun of the dead', so in actual fact there isn’t a way of which I did record this, but I did do the editing down and also added in the audio as this clip did not have any audio in it. Personally I found this to be quite an easy clip to add in sound effects on as I was able to do so easily , this is because the majority of the sound effects of which needed to be added in where sounds like … footsteps/fridge humming/car alarm/running ext.
  • 12.  What elements of your experiments will you include in your final product? I feel that I worked well with the filming for my experiment production work as I already had a good idea of which I wanted to create for my experiment and I was quick to get on with the filming process for the production. Despite this, I feel that there isn’t really any features of my experiment that I will be using in my final production work, this is because my experiment isn’t actually what I wanted to make for my actual production. However, despite this there is some camera angles of which I believe would be seen as good examples to include in my final production work, as I feel they would benefit from being in a short horror film.
  • 13.  I found the editing of this clip to be quite easy as there wasn’t really that much editing to be done to this, but then again I suppose that it was meant to be an exercise to refresh my mind the whole time. Infect the only real editing of which I had to do was the idea of cutting some of the scenes down a bit so they became slightly shorter , this Is because I found that some of the scenes weren’t going to fit with the audio as the scenes were running longer than what the audio was, basically so that if I didn’t edit it then the audio would have cut out before that part/scene had finished, it just wouldn’t work so I edited some of the scenes down so that they would fit in with the audio perfectly, if not almost.
  • 14.  What elements of your experiments will you include in your final product? I feel that I worked well with my experiment production, there is a few different techniques that I feel I might use in my production work, some of the which might include the idea of the variety of camera angles of which were used in my experiments. I am fond of the camera angles that show the expression of peoples face, as it really is a thing that will grab the attention of the audience which will make it to be much more appealing towards the target audience and other people who will chose to view my short film.
  • 15.  I found putting the audio for this clip also to be quite easy as after editing down the clip, I realised that they where just ordinary sound effects such as walking/running/fridge humming/shop door/car alarm. These where all sound effects that I was able to pick up very easily from pretty much any kind of free sound effect website, in my opinion I believe that I would have preferred the idea of doing something which was a bit more complicated but then again I suppose it was more of an idea to refresh my memory and teach me new skills, so due to this I think I found it to be quite easy and managed to complete it without difficulty. In my opinion though I believe that the audio was the easiest as all I had to really do was add in some audio/sound effects into the correct place and run/play it to make sure that it fits properly without any altercation.
  • 16.  What elements of your experiments will you include in your final product?  When it came to putting in my audio for my experiment, I put my video into premier and slowly added in my sound effects, I feel on a whole I worked well with putting in the audio for my work. This is because I was easily able to add in the sound effects of which I needed to i.e. the walking sound effects for when they where approaching the door, these kind of sound effects where easy to find as I was able to find them on various different sound effect websites. I feel that when it comes to my actual production I feel that I will be mostly using the same sound effects that I used for my experiments, as I feel they are generally good sound effects of which I believe I could make good use out of with my production work
  • 17.  List all the potential constraints that might affect or limit your production, you should consider issues from each of these categories:  Time/Personnel/Cost/Technical/Location/Organisational Not being able to film at the set location of which you had agreed to film. Not everyone agreeing on a time for filming. Being short people when it is time to film. Forgetting yourself the time and day you are filming. Needing to buy props but forgetting/not having the money to buy the props of which I might require. Breaking the equipment(will cost money to get it fixed). Not getting everyone organised together e.g.; Turing up to wrong location. People turning up for filming at different times. Forgetting to bring equipment i.e. camera/props/tri pod.
