2. Design 1
In this sketch I have tried
to emulate the iconic
serif seen on Metallica’s
logo.
Not only will it be
immediately recognised
by my target audience
but it will also signify the
genres of music covered
in the magazine.
By using this design I am
conforming to
conventions of magazines
– as I have a seen a
magazine, called ‘Metal
Hammer’ that uses the
design to some extent:
3. Design 2
I wanted to do a Flatplan
with just a guitar on my
cover – and this is how it
turned out.
I think it lacks conformity to
the convention of having a
musician on the front cover.
Having a musical instrument
instead seems a little out of
place. I also feel that having
a box around the masthead
will limit it and that my
target audience may prefer
jagged edges over straight
edges. I think this because a
‘straight edge’ has
connotations of conformity,
which would not be
appreciated by my target
audience.
4. Design 3
For this Flatplan, I wanted a
literal representation of my
masthead – an actual
scratchguard for a guitar.
Again, it looks a bit out of
place but it could work.
When I put out a survey to
my target audience, I found
that the majority of my
audience do not play guitar.
As a result of this I thought
it might be useful to have an
image of what a scratchplate
is for those who might now
know.
5. Design 4
I wanted my contents
page to be simplistic
and concise to people
do not have trouble
trying to decode it (as I
have done while
researching contents
pages)
Despite this I wanted a
‘stem and leaf’ system
for showing the folios. I
decided not to include
this in my final design –
for simplicity.
