What do you expect to see in a masthead?
Whole words? Letters? Initials? Compound words? I expect to see short, snappy,
catchy words, which cannot be too long sentences like ‘The Best Rock and Roll
Magazine Ever’. A few letters or Initials that fit will work better/

What is the purpose of a masthead? The purpose of a masthead is to identify the
name of the magazine.

Do the other design features of the mastheads (font/design, shape, style) give any
clues about the music genre, or the editorial treatment within the mag, or about the
design/layout of the magazine in general ?The colours, font, style etc. does give
clues as rock magazines may use hard colours like black, red and white, whilst pop
magazines will use brighter colours like blue, pink, purple.

2. This masthead was designed by last years students in
media studies, however if I hadn’t of known that, I
would've thought it was professional. Its really well
designed and stands out really nice with a white
background.
This is a very basic but effective masthead. It stands out
really well and the red colour and the shadowing black works
really good.
This is a good masthead, it stands out and is designed really good. The ‘A’ is the main
part of the masthead as this is the part that stands out.
‘Keys’ is a good name as it is short and catchy,
however the style it is in isn’t really attractive and
looks plain and non-professional. The background
colour doesn’t work well.

These mastheads have showed me that it is important to have a clear, short
masthead.
The background colour should fit well with the masthead or it wont look professional.
Include something into the masthead to make it stand out. For example, ‘Rck Star’,
‘Soundz’ or ‘MUZIK’. These looks unusual which helps that stand out more.

• A good colour for a masthead would probably be black, it goes
with everything so if you have a bright background colour then
you wont have to worry about the black not going with it.
