Pinene
1.
2. PINENE
Pinene (C10H16) is a
bicyclic monoterpene chemical compound.
There are two structural isomers of pinene
found in nature:
α-pinene and β-pinene.
occurring as major components of the
essential oil of pine trees and used as a
chemical raw material.
4. Pinene
• It is possible to make essential
cannabis oil through steam
extraction to use in perfumes,
cosmetics, soaps, candles and also as
a flavouring agent in cooking, for
candies and beverages.
5. Isomers of pinene
• It have two isomers:
• 1. Alpha pinene 2. Beta pinene
• Pinene exist in more than 400 kinds of natural
plants, the content of alpha-pinene in
turpentine about 60%~70%, beta- pinene
content of 20%~30%.
7. Source of pinene
• It is the main terpene in pine trees, which
gives them their characteristic scent.
• Its a major constituent of turpentine and is
also found in high amounts in rosemary and
cannabis .
• Both forms are present in many essential oils
but are mostly obtained from tupentine, and
The amount produced depends on the
temperature and available sunlight.
9. Synthesis of pinene
• α-Pinene and β-pinene are both
produced from geranyl pyrophosphate,
via cyclisation of linaloyl pyrophosphate
followed by loss of a proton from the
carbocation equivalent.
10.
11. USES
It has activity as
• Analgesic-Relieves pain
• Antibacterial-Slows bacterial growth.
• Anti-inflammatory-reduce inflammation systemically.
• Anti-proliferative-inhibits cancer cell growth.
• Antioxidant-prevents oxidation damage to other
molecules in the body.
• In chemical industry selective oxidation of pinene with
some catalysts gives many compounds for perfumery,
such as artificial odorants.
