Pinene is a colorless liquid hydrocarbon that occurs naturally in pine trees, rosemary, and cannabis. It has two isomers - alpha-pinene and beta-pinene. Pinene has several health benefits and can be used to make essential oils for perfumes, cosmetics, soaps and food flavoring. It is synthesized from geranyl pyrophosphate and is widely found in over 400 plant species, especially in the resins of pine trees. Pinene has analgesic, antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant properties and is used in the chemical industry where selective oxidation produces derivatives used in perfumery.
