4. hen you have a problem, getting help is a sign of
Wcourage, not weakness or failure – Academy
Award winning actor Ben Affleck.
The actor made this statement after he recovered from
substance abuse years ago, giving a strong message to all
those who are addicted to some or the other vice or are
suffering from a mental health issue.
One of the major public health problems today is
depression. It set in long before the Covid-19 pandemic.
The pandemic and the resultant isolation only triggered it
further. Substance abuse on the other hand can be traced to
the last century.
While it is natural to feel sad or experience other negative
emotions at times, if it lingers consistently for a prolonged
period, then it spells trouble and calls for professional help.
Generally, it is advised that if such feelings continue for
two weeks, the person should seek professional help.
Unfortunately, we neglect our mental health the most.
Overcoming substance abuse essentially requires
professional help lest it manifests once again.
Realizing the bevy of harmful effects that drug and alcohol
abuse bring with them, the need to establish rehab centers
assumed paramount importance. There are rehabilitation
centers for the aged, handicapped, serious illness, injury,
and surgery as well. Some rehabilitation centers are also
gender specific.
The quantum leap in the number of depression-related cases
also gave rise to various new avenues for sharing and
getting the congestion off one’s chest. Vent Friends, for
instance, is a new concept that helps the depressed person
to vent out feelings to someone who is unknown to them
but are patient and non-judgmental. However, these
solutions can resolve the issues only if addressed in the
primary stages. The severe cases need professional help
from rehabilitation centers designed especially for people
with mental problems and alcohol or substance abuse.
Whether you are battling with substance or alcohol abuse or
are a patient with mental disorder or medical issues rehab
centers can help you bounce back to normal living.
Realizing that there is a problem is the first step. Once this
has been realized seeking professional help is the second
step. Rehab centers treat patients with customized plans, to
give back quality of life through trained therapists,
counsellors, nurses, volunteers.
When a person goes to a rehabilitation center, a customized
plan is prepared for treatment based on the discussion with
him/her and the history of the patient. This is followed with
medication, therapy, counselling, group discussions, etc.
Discussing similar experiences with peers, sharing
problems help in motivating one to get healed knowing that
he/she is not alone. And group motivation helps in positive
outcomes of the treatment.
A holistic approach towards the entire rehabilitation process
goes a long way in treating the patient successfully.
Patients’ will power and family support are equally
important to achieve long term solutions.
There are many rehab centers that have excellent
infrastructure to soothe the troubled minds of the patients in
addition to experienced therapists. Providing the right
ambience and counselling the patients towards normalcy
are the prime objectives of these centers.
We at Insights Care, handpicked few such rehabilitation
centers that are doing yeoman service in healing alcohol
and substance abusers, mental health patients and those
with medical issues. Read to learn more about these centers
in our latest edition – 10 Most Promising Rehabilitation
Centers to Watch in 2021.

12. “In our own unique journeys—to
attain whatever goal—challenges are
inevitable.”
Throughout a lifetime, the one
aspect we seldom pay attention
to, is ourselves. Evidently, to
relish the fruits of a peaceful and
content life, it is undoubtedly vital to
emphasize on our health – both
physical and mental.
The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic has
compelled us to acknowledge this need
and move physical and mental health
care to the top of our priority lists. The
unforeseen change in our daily
routine—work and personal—has had
a significant impact on our holistic
wellness.
Speaking particularly about mental and
emotional health, this sudden change
that included isolation and social
distancing, became a breeding ground
for acute and chronic mental illnesses.
Not to mention people’s heightened
inclination towards substances or other
distractions for stress relief.
With addiction and mental illness
being so complex, it requires expert
medical attention, and going through
rehabilitation is the only way out for
some. Rehabilitation centers across the
world have ceaselessly striven to
provide quality and comprehensive
care to help patients who have fallen to
addiction and mental illnesses.
One prominent name among such
proficient rehab centers is Nōmina
Wellness Inc., a premier mental
wellness treatment facility,
headquartered in Courtenay, BC,
Canada, specializing in trauma,
addition-related, and mental health
disorder treatment.
In the following interview, Lisa Klco,
the CEO, shares her insights on how
Nōmina Wellness is changing the way
mental health care is perceived, her
opinions on the current landscape of
the rehabilitation space, and her plans
on scaling the institution’s operations
in 2021.
Below are the highlights of the
interview:
Please brief our audience about
Nōmina Wellness, its values, and the
key aspects of its stronghold within
the healthcare space.
We are one of the few treatment
facilities that specialize in mental
health related disorders, not just
addictions treatment. We wanted to
create a transformative space offering
specialized care for the holistic
treatment of disorders, utilizing healing
centered engagement (HCE), which is
a very community based, trauma
model.
One of the things that is most
important to us, is changing the way
society views and treats disorders, and
recognizing that addiction is one of the
many ways mental health distress
presents. We approach all mental
health disorders from a strength-based
lens, which can tend to be less
pathologizing. We strongly believe in
the resilience and inherent capacity our
clients have, to overcome any
adversity. We want people to feel
empowered to learn from this, and to
share their journey.
Our smaller and more intimate setting
provides a level of customization not
found elsewhere which has helped to
make us the foremost leader in the
treatment of complex mental health
issues from an in-patient setting. We
always wanted to ensure supports were
accessible, for the varying needs of our
clients, to help them thrive. So, we set
up a structure to support people across
a spectrum of care, from in-patient to
second stage, through to individual
counselling.
Tell us more about the services
offered by Nōmina Wellness which
make it stand out from the
competition?
Our program has been designed off of
the STAMP model (more info below),
a positive approach to health, which
reinforces a human’s evolutionary
hardwiring to be well. Unlike
traditional treatment models, which
seek to identify a specific problem, we
strive to treat the whole person, and
supporting change within their
collective. We want to understand what
are the adaptive behaviours a person
has developed to respond to their
adversity, work on changing those,
helping the person and their families
understand why they were developed
to begin with. It was really important
for us to others find their strength,
reconnect with families, and reclaim
their lives.
The benefits of a collaborative team
approach not found elsewhere can also
be seen in programs such as our
chronic pain program, where clients
have seen results not thought possible
in traditional healing models. Our
integration leading evidence-based
modalities such as Intensive Short-
Term Dynamic Psychotherapy
(ISTDP), Direct Neurofeedback (DNF)
have really provided us some
impressive results and more
sustainable changes. We often work
with the most complex clients, who
need this type of deeper engagement.
We are also able to draw from other
13. evidence-based therapies such as
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT),
Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT),
Eye Movement Desensitization and
Reprocessing (EMDR) in addition to
other somatic based approaches.
Because our staff is so well trained, we
are able to draw from and integrate
these into a level of customization in
treatment planning. We wrap around
this work with robust psychoeducation
to help clients understand the how and
why of their adaptive responses,
increasing their level of awareness into
their process, and providing them tools
to share their strength and knowledge.
However, our greatest advantage
comes from the strategic location of
Nōmina. The site was chosen for it’s
beautiful vistas and its healing beauty.
It was a prime location to maximize
some of the pioneering work we do
with Nōmina’s adventure and nature-
based therapies. We have taken years
of research on transformation change,
nature, and healing to combine it into
something not found elsewhere!
What challenges did Nōmina
Wellness face in its earlier days?
How did your organization fare
through the initial phase of the
pandemic?
What better time to open an inpatient
facility than during a global pandemic!
Nōmina was set to open just as
COVID-19 hit Canada. This placed
significant challenges on us, as well as
our affected community. During this
time, we made the painstaking decision
to close our inpatient operation pooling
our existing resources and refocused

free mental health support to our
community members. Once we had a
better understanding of the impacts of
COVID-19 and the safest protocols to
follow, we were able to slowly reopen
our inpatient facility, which has been
steadily growing. We continue to face
challenges, but as we try to teach our
clients, growth is painful, and it is
about navigating these with
compassion.
Lisa, please brief us on your journey
in the healthcare industry. Tell us
about how you came to be in this
profession.
Mental health has always been a
passion. Growing up in a family deeply
affected by mental health issues on
every level, demonstrated the distinct
need for better treatment options. This
helped in forming the vision for
Nōmina almost 20 years ago while I
was working as a hairdresser in
Hamilton, ON. This is where I first
developed an appreciation for the
transformative power of connecting
with people. I wanted to support
change from within, not just externally.
I had a vision for an in-patient
treatment facility that could provide
that healing space.
During this time in my life, I also
joined the military, so I gained another
different perspective on change, and
human connection. I was able to see
transformations happen on so many
different levels, and witness the
remarkable power of human resilience,
and growth. It inspirited me to learn
more.
What followed was decades of
education, experience, and hard work
in various organizations as both a
student, a volunteer, an educator, and
soldier. I took on as many
opportunities I could to gain as much
“We have taken years of research on
transformation change, nature, and
healing to combine it into something

“
15. knowledge and experience as possible.
The vision truly came to fruition upon
meeting my two business partners,
Daniel, and Ainslie. It was clear that
they both shared life experiences and a
passion for helping others. So, you
could really say Nōmina was 20 years
in the making.
The COVID-19 pandemic has
affected the health of many
physically as well as mentally. What
was your experience of helping
people dealing with mental stress
and trauma during the pandemic?
When the pandemic first hit, thank-
fully I had decades of military
experience in crisis management and
leadership. We realized the global
effects of COVID-19 on the human
population, and have observed the
STAMP model definition
The STAMP model was created by Dr Adrianna
Wilson. It is based on the principal of positive
psychiatry and focuses on the things we need to
be well. It breaks it down into 5 components:
· S – Safety
· T – Team/tribe
· A – Aim/ability
· M – Meaning
· P – Play
Each element needs to exist in a functioning
human in order for them to be well. Without any
one of these components, it is difficult to live an
optimal life.

16. mental health crisis growing
exponentially, as evidenced by demand
for mental health services. Thankfully,
our own understanding of the STAMP
model helped to equip us very well to
take on the support to others, as they
navigate these challenges.
The two foremost elements of this
STAMP model, are Safety and Team
(the need for human attachments), have
been compromised by this invisible
global threat. We understand people’s
need for connection and integrally their
need for safety, impacts how they feel
and how they cope.
Coupling that with a lack of aim and or
purpose and disrupted meaning, we
acknowledge people struggle to
actualize wellness. Interesting,
COVID-19 has uniquely provided
different opportunities for play, yet has
challenged our problem-solving
capacity beyond what we, as a species,
thought we could handle. We have seen
the depth of the human spirit, as we see
that every day in our work and know
that humans are capable of navigating
this stress.
In your opinion, what could be the
future of the rehabilitation services
niche post the pandemic?
I believe we will continue to see a rise
in people seeking mental health
support. We have seen the devastating
rise in mental health concerns. The
pandemic has brought about people’s
desire to connect with each other and
with nature; two things that are integral
to our program. Through the pandemic,
people have been getting out more and
more, seeking homes with yard space,
growing food, being more active, while
trying to find ways to be in harmony
with our collective. In many ways, our
program simply honours this natural
gravitational pull, and helps humans
normalize their responses to stress so
they can harness their power of their
process, using it to optimize outcomes.
The vast majority of our clients coming
in present with complex presentation
rooted in either physical, mental, or
emotional pain. Our niche in all of this
really comes from meeting people
where they are at and having a
diversity of resources to offer those
with more complex needs. We have
been able to see our model at work
provide unparalleled transformations
not found in the traditional medical
community. We feel this is the next
evolution of mental health and
addictions treatment.
As an established leader, what would
be your advice to the budding
entrepreneurs and enthusiasts
aspiring to venture into the
rehabilitation services sector?
Some of the hardest work you could
possibly do, and yet the most
rewarding. This work is not for the
faint of heart, yet provides such a
unique space to work alongside the
remarkable humans we do. Not just our
clients, but our staff to. None of this
would be possible without the amazing
team who come together every day
giving themselves to provide the
richness of the experience to others.
Much like the stamp model suggests,
this level of healing is not possible
without the strength of the team.
Surround yourself with fiercely
passionate people, who care about
treatment as much as you do, because
mental health is not a spectator sport.
Lastly, be prepared for endless days,
long nights, and lots of
disappointment. The hardships remind
us every day of the importance of the
work we do.
How do you envision scaling Nōmina
Wellness and its operations in 2021?
Continuing to develop excellence in
our program portfolio and remaining
open to possibilities. We recognize this
quality of care is desperately needed
globally. We hope one day to reach a
point where we can expand this, and
have it be more accessible elsewhere!
However, we are truly the embodiment
of a local grown family practice, which
is why the families are at the heart of
what we do. We are a Nōmina family,
who want to help. We hope to be able
to expand our level of care to other
places. But for now, we want to ensure
we stay close, and do what we can to
help our own community with our
scholarship opportunities.

18. Family. This word can evoke different feelings
for different people. For some, it means blood
relations that stay with you through thick and
thin, while for others, family can be a group of people

Blood relations or not, family means the world for

The genesis of New Method Wellness
Based in San Juan, California, New Method
Wellness is a family-owned and operated treatment
program and a premier dual diagnosis addiction
treatment center dually accredited by The Joint
Commission and CARF International.
The rehabilitation center was founded in 2006 by
Ed and Susie Hopson Blum and has been
supporting individuals and families struggling with
substance abuse and co-occurring disorders for
over 15 years.
KC shares the core values of the center, “We are
committed to family values and believe that each
part of the family system deserves to heal,” he
says, “our mission is to lead the way in treating
the disease of addiction and co-occurring
disorders, providing individuals with effective
solutions for lasting recovery.”
To achieve this mission, New Method Wellness
Business Development at New Method Wellness, received strong
support and encouragement from his family to heal from his severe
condition of substance abuse. While the journey was difficult for
him, his parents' support and his own will gave him the much-
needed motivation throughout the healing programs.
Now at New Method Wellness, KC taps into those experiences to
aid individuals and families suffering from addiction and substance
abuse.

19. focuses on delivering the highest quality of compassionate
care in a safe, supportive environment conducive to
personal growth and development.
A holistic approach to recovery
The contribution of rehabilitation centers has been
tremendous for those in need. “However, determining the
right treatment provider is essential in differentiating
between an average and an excellent residential treatment
center,” says KC.
“Recommended by Dr. Phil, New Method Wellness is one of
the nation's best treatment centers for alcohol and drug
addiction offering the client a variety of evidence-based
treatment approaches,” he further adds.
The core focus of the programs at New Method Wellness
has been evidence-based therapies such as cognitive-
behavioral therapy, dialectical behavioral therapy, and
addiction psychiatry. Moreover, the center also includes
some holistic methods such as Wolf and Equine-assisted
therapies, Surf and Paddleboard therapies in addition to
many other complementary approaches that include
massage, acupuncture, yoga, and meditation.
KC explains about the holistic approach of the treatment
programs, “holistic recovery implements very practical,
comprehensive ways for the individual to develop a
meaningful life after treatment and is an important part of
recovery, designed to help the individual reach their full
potential.”
Driving excellence from experiences
What is life but a series of experiences? These experiences
make us stronger; they develop our character even though
we don't realize it sometimes. KC Gooding experienced the
same emotions during his journey of recovering from an
addiction.
“I struggled with addiction my entire life which came at a
significant cost to me and the emotional security of my
family,” shared KC, “We tried multiple approaches to
support my illness including treatment programs, private
practice professionals, and 12 step programs. I had reached
the age of 34 with little to no success when my parents
provided one more opportunity to change.”
Acknowledging the significance of the illness and diligence
to make it work this time, KC accepted help on 11-29-12.
“And I have been sober, ever since,” KC explains, “it was
challenging, to say the least, a lot of internal work was
required but it turned out to be the best thing I have ever
done for myself and my family.” These experiences and
learnings from his journey helped KC in helping others

20. suffering from the disease of addiction.
For the last 5 years, KC has been working in the field of
behavioral healthcare, currently serving as the National
Director of Business Development at New Method
Wellness where he receives the privilege of supporting
individuals and families every single day. His work and
cordial approach at the rehabilitation center and in the field
of behavioral healthcare further got him an opportunity to
volunteer advocacy efforts as the President of the California
Alliance for State Advocacy (CASA) while actively
participating as a member of the National Association of
Addiction Treatment Providers (NAATP).
A pandemic of mental health
Covid-19 has had a devastating effect across the globe.
Both the physical as well as behavioral healthcare industry
saw a surge of cases during the pandemic. The fear of the
unknown and being confined within four walls living alone
and away from friends and family led to a rise in
alcoholism and drug addiction in addition to a wide variety
of mental health-related issues.
However, the rise has not necessarily meant that treatment
programs are stretched to capacity many providers have
struggled to stay open with a lack of patients seeking care
during the pandemic. Many potential patients have opted to
select providers closer to their locality, experiencing fear of
infection due to travel.
Other challenges have included ensuring the safety of
patients in care from the virus which has caused issues with
admissions and operations at behavioral healthcare
facilities. The quality of care has also been compromised in
some facilities because of safety concerns or protocols.
There is a wide variety of challenges that providers have
had to navigate during the covid-19 pandemic.
KC shares his opinion about the effects of COVID-19 on
the behavioral healthcare industry. “In my opinion, the need
for quality behavioral healthcare programs is going to be
vital to the overall health and wellness of our communities
locally and nationally,” he says, “I believe there will be a
need for specialized programs treating specific
demographics and treating specific mental health and
substance abuse disorders. Recovery is not a one size fits all
model and our behavioral healthcare facilities cannot be
either. We will need a variety of specialty programs to meet
the overwhelming needs of the population.”
Authentic mantra for aspirants
As a professional with over five years working in
behavioral healthcare and direct knowledge of many of the
industry's highest quality facilities, KC shares an insider's
secret for the aspiring entrepreneurs wishing to enter
behavioral healthcare.
“I will let you know one thing that behavioral healthcare
facilities all have in common,” he says, “they are owned
and operated by someone with a passion for the work they
do, usually someone with relative experience in recovery.”
KC also highlights the hard work all these entrepreneurs
had put in to get to the higher points of their careers. A lot
of blood, sweat, and tears go into this work. Moreover, it's
the authenticity and a genuine concern for those you
support are other characteristics leaders in the behavioral
healthcare industry have in common.
“They do not enter this field for the profits they intend to
make,” explains KC “although those that possess these
qualities often do well for themselves, they enter this field
because it is their life's purpose being fulfilled by the
support they offer others.”
Maximizing efficiency for consistent care
Under the leadership and visionary decisions on KC's part,
New Method Wellness has undergone several changes and
improvements to the program for the benefit of clients and
families. And KC gives this credit to his dedicated staff
committed to the care of the clients.
With a dedicated and skilled team of 70 employees, the
wellness center offers a 3 to 1 staff to client ratio making it
easier to aid clients with utmost focus and care. This brings
quality care into focus which has been the priority of New
Method Wellness.
“Our goals are to continually develop and implement
changes that will create a significant change in the clients
and families that we are privileged to support. At this time,
we are solely intended to maximize the efficiency of the care
we provide,” says KC.

species is quite
unbelievable. There were
the days when humans used to make
tools from stones. Time flew out and
now humans use the tools to cut the
stones. The journey from living in
the caves to building a space station,
mankind has advanced to the whole
next level. We are the focal point of
progress, aren't we?
Mother nature has gifted the most
precious quality to the humans - The
intelligence. Since the day we came
into existence, we are inventing new
things. Artificial intelligence (AI)
and machine learning (ML) are the
top pics from this list. The ever-
growing utilization of AI in various
fields know no bounds. This
technology is playing a crucial role
in healthcare field too.
AI replaced humans in the wide
range of medical tasks. In certain
procedures, such as diagnosing of
diseases, AI performs better than
humans. But for many, AI is still
unclear. This article will drive you to
the importance of AI and ML in
healthcare system.
What is Artificial Intelligence in
Healthcare?
Artificial Intelligence in healthcare
is a process of including machine
learning algorithms for the analysis,
comprehension and presentation of
complex medical data. AI gathers all
the input data and process it to give
21|July 2021|www.insightscare.com
24. desired output. AI automates the overall working structure,
saving the time and efforts of humans.
Different Aspects of AI in Healthcare
Machine Learning
Many people think that AI and ML are the different terms
while some people consider them as a synonymous term.
Both are not true. Do you remember the Venn diagram -
circle in the circle? Thats the correlation between both these
terms. Machine learning is the branch of AI. ML is the
study of computer algorithms that uses data and improve
results automatically.
Data Mining
Data mining incorporates the data and analytics for the best
practices in medical sector. In other words, data mining is
subfield of computer science which extracts the patterns
from large data sets. The applications of data mining in
healthcare are limited because it is a new trend in the
medico’s world.
Deep Learning
People always tend to confuse in between machine learning
and deep learning. Deep learning is actually a part of
machine learning. Revise the Venn diagram again (circle in
the circle). Deep learning analyzes the data at greater
speeds without compromising the accuracy.
Artificial Neural Networks
Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs) are computing systems
based on the animal brain-like structure. ANN is a network
of simple processors or units called neurons. It adheres to
the functions of human brain to perform the work as human
does.
Advancement in Healthcare Sector with Adoption of AI
and ML
The evolution in computer science has assisted the
researchers to develop new technologies. It also assists
Medicos for the better understanding of diagnosing and
decision making. Healthcare is a field that is highly suitable
for the implementation of AI and ML tools. Let's go through
some of the key applications of these tools.

telehealth for the society. Doctors can guide the patients
remotely with virtual conversations on smartphones. It
eliminates the direct physical contact and is a cost-
effective practice.
• Diagnosing of diseases like cancer, brain tumor is
possible because of implementation of machine learning.
The process has become speedy and more accurate which
helps to detect the seriousness of the disease.
• CT-scan and ultrasonic sonography are commonly used
technologies for clear view of internal body structure.
They form a series of images detecting the exact defects
in the internal parts of human body.
• Machine learning helps diagnose diabetes too. Early
diagnosing of diabetes can save many lives.
• ML can record the algorithmic data of patient for
personalizing treatment in the future. New data sets can
help medical practitioners to lower the mortality rate.
• Robotic surgeries are more precise and can be carried out
with minimal harms to the human body.
• LASER technology has already occupied almost all the
aspects of medical sector and proving to be the most
essential technique in the field.
Into the Future
Humans are the ever-learning creatures, aren’t they? We are
living in the digital era where technology is inching towards
new heights every day. Artificial intelligence is toddling
today, though it can be applied to all the fields of healthcare
in future.
AI and ML automates the complex tasks that are beyond the
human capabilities. Application of machine learning in all
the medical sector will gather the entire data. It will create a
centralized global platform for doctors. In other words,
artificial intelligence will be the base for ‘medical
intelligence’.

26. Empowering Recovery through Expertise and Empathy
O
nly a life lived for others is a
life worthwhile,” Albert
Einstein had said. And most of
us try to live by this thought. We all
support and service others however we
can be it feeding birds and animals in
your neighborhood or helping the
poorer finding shelter and food during
this time of the COVID-19 crisis.
For many of us, the inspiration for
doing good deeds is pure compassion
or empathy that came out of sufferings
and similar experiences. David
Niknafs, the Founder of RECO
Intensive, found his inspiration from
his experiences and being sober to help
others dealing with substance abuse.
Moreover, David being diagnosed with
Cystic Fibrosis at an early age,
exposed him to frequent hospital visits,
regular treatments, and research.
Combining his experiences of suffering
from substance abuse and his passion
for working in the healthcare sector
David founded RECO Intensive in
2013.
Over the years, RECO Intensive has
empowered individuals and their
families to fight and treat substance
abuse. The treatments and programs
founded on compassion and empathy
focusing on employing the best
services and resources to the
individuals have helped earn RECO
Intensive several accreditations and
recognitions in Florida.
Read the following interview to know
how RECO Intensive, through its
services, is empowering a change in
the life of individuals and the
community they serve.
Please brief our audience about
RECO Intensive, its values, and the
key aspects of its stronghold within
the rehabilitation space.
RECO is substance abuse and
co-occurring treatment facility in
downtown Delray Beach, Florida,
holding the title of most accreditations
and affiliations in the South-Eastern
United States. RECO provides five
levels of partial-hospitalization,
intensive outpatient, and outpatient-
only services and programs.
The facility’s reputation and core
values are built on honesty, integrity,
and empowerment, and it’s reflected
not only with the treatment provided to
the clients and their families but in the
communities we serve.
Tell us more about the services that
make RECO Intensive stand out
from the competition?
RECO employs cutting-edge medical,
clinical, and behavioral interventions
specific to an individual’s bio, psych,
and social needs. Whether it’s equine
therapy, neurofeedback,
brain-mapping, CBT, EMDR, or other
therapeutic modalities, an
individualized treatment program is
developed and implemented
throughout treatment. RECO is a
movement, a brand, a culture creating
trends to empower an individual’s
recovery.
What is your opinion on the impact
of the current pandemic on the
global healthcare sector, and what
were the challenges you came across
during the initial phase of the
pandemic?
Whether or not someone had substance
abuse issues or mental health disorders
before the pandemic, we feel nobody
has been immune to the mental and
emotional impact ‘social distancing’
and isolation has created. Everyone
was fearful, confused, isolated, and
unsure what tomorrow would look like.
It’s been chaos in every sense of the
word.
As a healthcare provider, health and
safety is our primary focus. We were
prepared, as our CEO Dave is an
expert in Infection Control, and
immediately implemented prophylactic
and preventative measures to ensure
client and staff safety. We had an
abundance of PPE and even donated to
the local hospitals, police departments,
and fire departments to aid in frontline
protection.
As for our clients, we limited their
interactions, regimented their
schedules, kept them on-site only, and
maintained providing all services in
socially distant settings. Every hour,
temperatures were taken, disinfectants
were being utilized q15, masks and
gloves were worn at all times, and our
medical staff was doing rounds every
qh.
Our team came together, facing their
personal fears while caring for others.
The staff, from top to bottom, were
nothing short of heroic.
In your opinion, what could be the
future of the rehabilitation services
post the pandemic?
“
24|July 2021|www.insightscare.com
27. The pandemic has taught us a lot. We
implemented our telehealth services for
a multitude of services, and we’ve
continued to offer outpatient services
weekly at no charge to our clients. We
are able to reach a lot of people who
needed support, community, and
guidance as a result of isolation,
lockdowns, and the inability to receive
any in-person care.
As we continue to evolve as the needs
change, we believe biotechnology and
virtual treatment will expand. We still
believe that in-person care is essential
for the first ninety+ days of treatment,
virtual care is a great option thereafter.
And in using biotechnology, patients
are able to track their physiological
changes with a tangible result.
As an established leader, what would
be your advice to the budding
entrepreneurs and enthusiasts
aspiring to venture into the
rehabilitation services sector?
This is not an easy industry. However,
if you do it for the right reasons,
success will find you. The most
beautiful thing in this world is
changing someone’s life in the most
positive way, and then watching all the
lives touched by that one person.
How do you envision scaling your
company’s operations in 2021?
We will continue to pivot and adjust to
the times and problems at hand.
Whatever obstacles we face, we have
the team to overcome them.
Phone Apps – We currently have 1
available in the Apple and Android
App Store, called Second Story –
Alumni Hub. We are working on 2
others. The next app will be a
productivity app (think Uber meets
Imessage meets ADP). Our app will
track all employees with a van emblem
when driving company vehicles,
showing exact locations in real time. It
will have HIPAA compliant
chats/groups/departments for
communications which can be
connected with APIs to our electronic
medical records for shift and progress
notes, Employees can clock in/out,
request time off, etc. which will be sent
to appropriate managers, and
authorized/sent to payroll. This app
will be licensed out to other facilities,
and has the potential to be tweaked for
other industries.
About the leader
David Niknafs founded RECO
Institute in 2012, and
subsequently RECO Intensive
and RECO Trust in 2013.
“Dave” entered the professional
healthcare space in 2010. With
his father being a physician,
Dave was always drawn to the
healthcare industry. In addition,
he suffers from Cystic Fibrosis,
a terminal genetic disorder with
a low survival rate. From an
early age, he was exposed to
hospitals, healthcare, and
research monthly.
In adolescence, Dave became
addicted to opiates at the start of
the Opioid Epidemic. After eight
years of dependence on virtually
every substance, he was able to get
sober in 2008, while still fighting for
his life from Cystic Fibrosis. Dave
began to work in behavioral health in
2010 while continuing his education
and maintaining his personal sobriety.
Upon getting certified as a family
interventionist, Dave founded RECO, a
legacy for him to leave behind
whenever that time comes. As the
success rates for RECO’s treatment
continued to increase, RECO grew and
continually evolving with the
generational landscapes and is now
involved in research and development.
This is Dave’s legacy.

Interoperability in 2021 and the Future of Connected
Health
Up until 2020, the cautious conservatism of the healthcare
industry has generally kept it from swiftly embracing the
wonders of connectivity. Establishment of new standards,
processes, regulations, and insurance practices is a costly
and time-consuming effort. Precisely in response to the
devastating challenges of the Covid-19 pandemic, many
governments have dramatically increased their investment
in healthcare innovation.
While advances in connected wearable technology allow
for a global shift in the healthcare paradigm towards
prevention and care. RPM systems are being used to
reinforce recovery of patients discharged from acute care
units, to reduce the progression of chronic disorders, and to
power global clinical trials.
With the demand for mobile monitoring devices continually
growing manufacturers are reporting a worldwide
semiconductor shortage. No single vendor is likely to
reliably satisfy the needs of the budding RPM markets.
Some strong brands – such as FitBit, iHealth, Withings, and
Xiaomi – still favor a more isolated and stand-alone
approach.
However, industry-wide adoption of RPM with large-scale
deployments can only be safely implemented if the use of
monitoring devices is diversified amongst many suppliers.
Moreover, the “bring your own device” or BYOD
movement is further changing the face of healthcare, and
the growing desire of patients to control their own health
data is altering the way records are stored, accessed, and
shared.
Leading healthcare providers (85% of US hospitals) are
already acknowledging this reality by adopting the FHIR
protocol (Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resource
protocol) for health data exchange.
Device diversity and interoperability both drive healthcare
efficiency up and the costs down. MedM software solutions
are designed to facilitate these aspects and we invite
partners from many fields to join us on this journey
together.

34. The Importance of
Familial Involvement
in
Addiction
Rehabilitation
Humans are used to looking at the brighter
picture but what about the dark reality of
today's world? One of the major
challenges faced by people is drug addiction. It is
horrifying to see how addiction is taking over the
youth so easily. Drugs, Alcohol are ruining young
lives and also ruining the family’s peace. When an
individual of a family suffers, so does the family. It
is heartbreaking to see how people around the
addicted individual get affected. Entering a world of
addiction is easy but getting out of it is not less than
fighting a war.
Addiction is one thing which pulls you closer when
you try to run away from it. There are many drugs
which an individual can get addicted to, Bitter truth
is it takes time to get over it and start a fresh life.
The Millennials and Gen Z is a generation of
broken people trying to find peace in drugs.
There are tons of people who do not even have
knowledge about what is happening to them
because they are so much into the addiction so how
to quit is an entirely different question! Families
suffer a lot during this phase. Seeing a loved one
getting addicted to a drug or alcohol which can
32|July 2021|www.insightscare.com
Emerging Stronger
35. probably kill them is, perhaps, the worst thing to
experience.
Why rehabilitation?
Rehabilitation centers act as a school when it comes to
treating their addicts. As in school we are taught to follow
rules, activities and discipline, Similarly, during the period
of the stay in rehabilitation center an individual is just not
treated with medicines but also with lifestyle changes.
Drugs are so powerful that it effects the mental and physical
health of an individual. People usually go for rehabilitation
as a last option, which should not be the case. The quicker
you shift to rehabilitation centers the better result you will
get.
How rehabilitation helps?
Primarily, it brings a major change in your lifestyle choices.
Personality change is another thing you can achieve while
walking through a difficult part of leaving an addiction.
Rehabilitation centers involve activities like yoga, dance,
group activities, sharing life experiences, psychological
treatment and a lot more. There is a set of rules like eating
the food they give, going to bed in time, no toxic intake.
One might face zillions of difficulties in following these
things but at the end the result is unimaginable. You find
people who are like you and suffering from the similar
things that you are facing.
When an addicted person is sober for few days then they
understand what they have been doing for a few minutes of
fun. There is a high chance of an addict to bounce back
towards the drugs after rehabilitation. The main role here is
will power of an addict and support from the loved ones to
get them through the suffering.
Role of family
Family can be a huge support in overcoming addiction
abuse. They can help the one suffering by helping them stay
sober. It is difficult but of utmost necessity. The family
members might feel frustrated and angry but the one
suffering from an addiction should be handled with
patience.
Educating the family about drug addiction is necessary for
recovery. There might be a misunderstanding within family
about the addict’s condition. Sadly, at times it is the case
that family members believes that addicted individual is
stubborn and their motive is to bring sadness and problems
to the family. Here comes the misunderstanding and
judging for the addicted. The person already is in no sense
of what is going on around and the least you can do is
understand them.
Families can join family support groups or can take the
addicted one to the support group. Family can be very
encouraging and the biggest support an individual can have.
Indeed no one can support you, love you, encourage you
better than your family. The main thing is seeking help for
progress of the addicted person.
No one knows what the suffering individual is going
through. The amount of pain, emotions, mental pressure
they feel because of the toxication is hard to watch.
Families can push an individual to join a support group or a
rehabilitation center. An individual who is addicted to a
particular drug feels underconfident in most of the cases.
Family can prove to be a helping hand in pushing them
towards betterment. There is a high chance for your loved
ones who have been to a rehabilitation center to bouse back
to all the drugs again. You should keep them motivated and
offer help every now and then. Family support is the most
effective thing to stay sane and on track in life.

38. A Place of Care and Compassion
Mental health issues are
prevalent in one of every
five adults in America
and are given adequate amount of
importance as mental health
awareness is deemed as an important
aspect in the health of individuals.
Addiction too has been recognized as
a serious disease that requires
treatment.
When it comes to mental illness, they
are categorized under Any Mental
Illness (AMI) and Serious Mental
Illness (SMI). AMI deals with all
types of mental illnesses and SMI
deals with more specified, serious
mental disabilities.
Rehabilitation Centers are where
people with mental health and
addiction problems are helped to heal
and reinvent themselves. Provision of
adequate treatment with respect to
whichever mental health or addiction
issue a patient faces, is what rehab
centers strive for, and thus creating
an environment which is in
accordance with the requirement of
the treatment.
While intensively taking on the topic
for our edition titled, 10 Most
Promising Rehabilitation Centers
to Watch in 2021, we interviewed
Seasons in Malibu, a serene
residential treatment organization
licensed for both primary substance
use and mental health treatment.
In the following interview, Dr.
Reuben Vaisman, the Primary
Therapist at Seasons, shares with us
in detail about the organization’s
journey in the mental and drug
rehabilitation niches and his opinions
about the discipline, along with the
services they provide.
Below are the highlights of the
interview:
Please brief our audience about
your organization, its values, and
the key aspects of its stronghold

residential treatment organization
licensed for both primary substance
use and mental health. Since its
incorporation in 2008, Seasons
believes in a central client approach
which takes into consideration all of
the unique and specific concerns
which individuals might face prior
to, and during treatment. We find that
the boutique environment and
surroundings provide for an optimal
experience in healing.
Tell us more about the services that

attention to customer service, the
unmatched number of private

needs of the world. The pandemic
has proven to have a collective
pressure point in which the demand
for client needs started to exceed the
services available.
As a result, the industry has shifted
and is now permitting greater
allowances for access to resources
that were not originally available
(tele-sessions, counselling across
state lines, etc). During the initial
phases we were met with similar
challenges as hospitals and other
direct care facilities, which were
largely dependent around safety,
made adjustments of treatment
practices and assurances for a
systemic response.
In your opinion, what could be the
future of the rehabilitation services
niche post the pandemic?
The virtual industry is going to have
the most significant impact, largely
due to its accessibility and ability to
prove effective during this time.
Acute patients will still require an in-
person care environment like
Seasons provides, but outside of that,
most practitioners have decided to
maintain their virtual practices.
As an established leader, what
would be your advice to the
budding entrepreneurs and
enthusiasts aspiring to venture into
