rossroads Centre Antigua, established in 1998 by
renowned musician Eric Clapton, serves as a
powerful symbol of hope in the field of addiction
treatment. Nestled on the serene shores of the Caribbean,
this haven for recovery has evolved over 25 years into a
globally recognized institution. Eric Clapton's personal
journey of sobriety ignited the creation of Crossroads
Centre, addressing the prevalent struggles with substance
misuse on the island and globally.
What distinguishes Crossroads Centre is not just its
remarkable facilities—a beautiful campus and serene
spaces—but its serious commitment to clinical and holistic
addiction treatment. Rooted in the 12 step philosophy that
sees addiction as a disease and a family challenge, the
centre fosters open discussions and provides a supportive
environment. With a focus on mind, body, and spirit, they
weave mindful meditation, yoga, and clinical expertise into
their daily routines.
Celebrated as 'Champions of Recovery,' Crossroads Centre
Antigua doesn't merely offer treatment; it brings hope into

and earning PhDs to hundreds reuniting at a 25-year

Crossroads Centre Antigua plays in this specialized field!
Can you provide a brief overview of Crossroads Centre
Antigua and its mission in the field of addiction
treatment?
NP: Crossroads was established in 1998 by Eric Clapton,
who has had homes in Antigua for nearly four decades.
Seeing problems of crack addiction and alcoholism on the
island, Clapton, a sober man himself, wanted to give back
to the people of the island he loved. Thus he founded the
Crossroads Foundation, generously funding its operations.
The foundation is dedicated to offering 12-step treatment
programs for individuals struggling with alcohol and
substance use disorder globally who normally would not be
able to receive it
The mission of Crossroads Centre Antigua is clear: to
deliver world class addiction treatment at an affordable
cost. Additionally, the center strives to extend its reach by
providing full scholarships to those in need, aiming to
alleviate the burden of substance use disorder. Over the past
25 years, Crossroads Centre Antigua has evolved into a
remarkable treatment center, symbolizing a commitment to
transforming lives impacted by addiction.
What sets Crossroads Centre Antigua apart as a leading
addiction treatment center? What does it mean for the
organization to be recognized as 'Champions of
Recovery'?
NP: At Crossroads, our approach to substance use disorder
treatment sets us apart. Our focus is unwaveringly ethical,
prioritizing the well-being of the individual over financial
considerations. With 25 years of experience, the journey of
continuous learning has been invaluable as the field of
addiction treatment improves and new methods and
modalities emerge.
Being acknowledged as 'Champions of Recovery' holds
immense significance for us. It's not just an
accomplishment; it's a validation of our commitment to
transforming lives. Achieving this recognition has long
been an aspiration, and as we celebrate our 25th year, it
fuels our determination to persist in delivering exceptional
quality work in the field of recovery.
What are the key aspects of the treatment approach at
Crossroads Centre Antigua, and how do they support
long-term recovery for individuals?

Addiction is viewed as a family disease, and our aim is to
create a space where sufferers and their families can openly
discuss their experiences and how it impacts their lives.
There are no guarantees, but having a foundation from
Crossroads improves chances of success. What stands out
with us is our staff to client ratio which allows us to
establish a personal connection with each client. From
housekeeping to clinicians, everyone knows the clients by
name, fostering a community approach to treatment.
When someone enters our center, they are met with
understanding and compassion from the staff, creating a
supportive environment from the very beginning. We
address their specific challenges clinically, medically and
holistically. Our goal is to guide them in translating this
positive experience into their journey beyond our center.
What unique treatment methodologies or programs does
the organization employ to address addiction issues?
JG: In addition to our 12 step approach we've incorporated
a variety of modalities tailored to address substance use
disorder comprehensively. Our focus encompasses
education, skill building, and a significant emphasis on
relapse prevention. Communication and relationship
improvement are integral components as well as fostering
spiritual development and promoting an overall sense of
wellness.
Our clinical team, of master's level clinicians, prioritizes a
holistic perspective, addressing the entirety of an
individual's well-being—mind, body, and physical health.
We integrate evidence-based modalities, such as EMDR
and somatic work, into our 12 step treatment programs.
Spiritual counseling, didactical workshops, individual and
group therapy contribute to the multifaceted support we

offer. Notably, all interventions extend to clients' families.
Crossroads is distinguished by medically supervised on-site
detoxification services, ensuring a safe and monitored

How does the center integrate holistic approaches to
recovery, considering the mind, body, and spirit?
JG: Our commitment to holistic recovery is ingrained in
every aspect of our program.
Alongside Clinicians, our team comprises of professionals,
including a Psychiatrist, Physicians, Nurses, Therapists,
Counsellor Aides who together work to address every
element ofan individual's recovery and well-being.
Our approach integrates mindfulness principles into all
activities, including educational sessions, trauma work, and
experiential activities
The daily schedule is balanced, commencing with
meditation, and progressing through psychoeducation and
process groups, ensuring consistent attention to the mind,
body, and spirit throughout the day. Services like
acupuncture, massage therapy, and dietary guidance further
nurture the body. We empower individuals with knowledge
about the effects of drugs and alcohol, and provide physical
well-being through exercises and yoga. What sets us apart
is the integration of diverse modalities into a cohesive
treatment program.
Our spiritual counselor supports individuals in connecting
with their chosen path, regardless of religious affiliations.
Attendance to these sessions is voluntary.
Every day we hold team meetings that begin with a mindful
reflection, involving professionals that bring their

client.
How does Crossroads Centre Antigua stay updated with
the latest developments in addiction treatment and
adjust its programs accordingly
JG: Crossroads stays upto date of advancements in
substance use disorder treatment through a commitment to
ongoing professional development and a dynamic approach
to program adaptation.
In addition to our extensive experience, we have an
educational programme, and we are committed to keeping
current with the latest developments in the field.
‘‘

‘
Being acknowledged as
'Champions of Recovery' holds
great significance for us. It's a
valida on of our commitment to
transforming lives.
Our dedication to modern and ethical practices is integral to
our foundation-driven center. We maintain transparency in
our capabilities, focusing on our core expertise – assisting
individuals in dealing with addiction. This commitment,
coupled with our goal of providing continuing care support,
underscores our confidence in being at the forefront of our
specialized field.
JG: We're thrilled about a unique initiative we've
undertaken – our staff exchange program. It's an exciting
collaboration where our team members spend four to six
weeks working as clinicians in other reputable agencies.
This hands-on experience goes beyond clinical aspects,
delving into how other programs manage their medical
records and operate from every angle.
In today's dynamic business environment, balancing
business operations, client care, and effective staffing can
be challenging financially. How do you prioritize and
navigate these aspects for overall success at Crossroads?
TJ: Coming from a background in accounting, where
profitability was the primary focus, transitioning to a non-
profit organization required a paradigm shift. Now, I must
consider not only the financial bottom line but also
prioritize client care and the well-being of our staff.
From an operational perspective, every decision is geared
towards enhancing the well-being of our clients. While we
remain efficient, our accountability extends to responsible
funds management.
In managing the organization, I liken the process to a
triangle, with each side representing operations, staff, and
clients. This metaphor guides our decision-making process,
emphasizing the interconnectedness of these three key
aspects.
With regards to our staff, we've implemented a
performance-based system, linking salary increases directly
to staff performance. This approach ensures fairness and
efficiency in rewarding our team members, encouraging a
work environment where dedication is recognized and
rewarded. We provide comprehensive benefits for our staff,
including full medical coverage, to create a supportive and
caring work environment.
We realise that our success depends on crafting a balance
where client care and staff well-being are given equal
importance alongside sound financial management. This
approach reflects our dedication to being an organization
that deeply cares for both our clients and our team.

Our coordinator maintains contact for up to two years, for a
sustained connection to support individuals after

Could you share some success stories or testimonials
from individuals who have undergone treatment at
Crossroads Centre Antigua?

Success manifests in diverse ways, evident through emails,
letters, and cards from alumni celebrating significant
recovery milestones, marriages or the birth of children.
Daily, success is witnessed in the dedication of our

Taking a Holistic Approach
Beyond dealing with addiction's immediate issues, top-
notch rehab centers look at the bigger picture. Behind
closed doors, you'll find programs that care about physical,
mental, and emotional well-being. This means more than
just detox and talking it out; they include wellness
activities, nutritional support, and mindfulness practices.
By tackling the root causes of addiction and promoting
overall well-being, these centers help people build a strong
foundation for long-lasting recovery. It's like healing from
the inside out.
Experts Who Care
Behind the scenes of effective rehab centers are
professionals who not only know their stuff but also
genuinely care. Therapists, counselors, and medical staff
play crucial roles in creating a supportive and
understanding space for those in recovery.
Qualified staff bring expertise to the table, making sure
treatments are up-to-date with the latest in addiction
medicine. Compassion builds trust and understanding
between staff and patients, setting the stage for successful
therapy.
Diverse Therapies
The toolbox of top-notch rehab centers is full of different
therapies designed for various needs. Behind closed doors,
you'll find evidence-based therapies like CBT, DBT, and
MET. These aren't just for individual sessions; they often
pop up in group therapy too.
Group therapy provides a sense of community and shared
experiences, breaking down the loneliness that often comes
with addiction.
Involving Families
Effective treatment goes beyond the individual to include
their support network, especially family. Behind closed
doors, successful rehab centers understand how addiction
affects family dynamics and actively bring family members
into the recovery process.
Family therapy sessions create a space for open
communication, mending relationships, and building a
supportive environment for the person in recovery. By
involving the family, these centers recognize the importance
of relationships and work on strengthening that support
system.
Planning for Life After
Recovery doesn't end when the treatment program does.
Successful rehab centers know the importance of planning
for what comes next. Behind closed doors, they carefully
craft aftercare plans that include continued counseling,
support groups, and strategies to prevent relapse.
Aftercare planning isn't a one-size-fits-all checklist. It's a
personalized roadmap that considers an individual's goals,
challenges, and triggers. This thoughtful approach aims to
equip people with what they need to face life after treatment
successfully.
Dealing with Dual Issues
Behind the scenes of successful rehab centers is an
understanding that substance abuse often goes hand in hand
with mental health issues. They call it "dual diagnosis."
These centers address both the substance use and mental
health problems at the same time.
By tackling underlying mental health issues, these centers
not only boost the effectiveness of addiction treatment but
also contribute to a person's long-term well-being. It's a
two-pronged approach showing these centers are committed
to thorough and comprehensive care.
In Conclusion
Behind closed doors, top-notch rehab centers stand as
beacons of hope and healing. The strategies they use, from
personalized plans to a holistic approach and caring staff,
create an atmosphere that supports recovery. By uncovering
the mystery behind their success, we get a glimpse into the
many sides of addiction treatment and the dedication
needed to guide people toward a lasting recovery. In the
world of addiction treatment, the best centers aren't just
closing doors; they're opening them to a future free from the
chains of substance abuse.

In the challenging journey of overcoming addiction, the
hurdles span physical and mental battles. Seeking
assistance from an addiction recovery center is crucial
for ensuring a complete and effective recovery. This is
where First Step, a distinguished not-for-profit addiction,
mental health, and legal services hub in St Kilda,
Melbourne, steps in.
First Step stands out in the field of addiction recovery with
its unique approach, tailoring its services to each
individual's needs. The organization, led by CEO Patrick
Lawrence, is more than just a recovery center; it is a place
that offers hope and lasting change. Patrick has propelled
First Step into a comprehensive resource for those seeking
transformation.
The mission of First Step is twofold. Firstly, it aims to
provide a welcoming and hope-filled environment for
individuals seeking support for alcohol and other drugs or
mental distress. Secondly, the organization strives to create
an integrated community of care, enhancing each person's
agency, resilience, and connection.
Under Patrick's leadership, First Step envisions a
community where individuals grappling with substance use
and mental distress can not only recover but also thrive in a
safe and supportive environment.
Our team recently had a conversation with Patrick
Lawrence to delve into the profound impact of First Step
and his instrumental role in advancing the organization's
mission.
Please introduce yourself and share about your career
transition into the world of social justice.
I come from a family of professional musicians and had a
first career as a classical pianist working and studying in
Australia, Europe and the US. Upon return to Australia in
2002 I found myself in a notorious suburb of Melbourne,
volunteering at a small not-for-profit organisation that was
detoxing people off heroin in what was essentially a
specialized GP practice. I was drawn to the practical nature
of the work with the capacity each and every day to provide
support for people with pretty complicated lives. I still
make music, but gradually the community work took over.
Brief our readers about the First Step. What were the
core values and mission that led to its establishment?
First Step was created at the height (July 2000) and heart
(St Kilda) of the heroin overdose epidemic in Melbourne.
The building we still occupy was purchased to provide a
place where everybody had every chance to turn their lives
around. Over time our focus broadened to include clinical
and psycho-social mental health services and legal services,
and we now provide an integrated community of care and
support, maximizing each person's agency, resilience and
connection. We value compassion, respect and innovation,
and provided our services free of charge.
Shed some light on your journey at First Step that led
you to the CEO position.
While maintaining a part-time role at First Step for many
years, I developed my management capacity in other
organisations, primarily at the extraordinary Asylum

Seekers Resource Centre. Having a Director role there, as
well as periods as acting GM and acting CEO, I felt well-
qualified to apply for the CEO role at First Step in 2016.
How does First Step approach addiction recovery
differently from other treatment centers, and what
makes it unique?
What makes First Step unique is the multi-disciplinary and
highly collaborative team that ensures we can provide
people with almost all the help they need, from one team in
one place. This means a) people get access to the
professionals they need, b) those professionals work
together as a team, and c) progress can be consolidated to
achieve incremental, whole-of-life improvements. First
Step is literally the only outpatient service in Australia with
GPs and nurses, psychologists and mental health nurses,
psycho-social workers and lawyers.
What are some of the biggest challenges that First Step
faces as a non-profit organization in helping people
overcome addiction? How does the organization address
them?
First Step works with people with co-occurring needs
across substance use, mental health, housing, social
inclusion and legal support, which is the norm for people
who grew up in out-of-home care, survivors of childhood or
adult neglect and abuse, and people who grew up in
poverty. Bringing compassion and respect to the process of
understanding the whole person, including their trauma, is
essential to treatment and support, along with a welcoming,
hope-filled environment. Funding is a constant challenge in
a heavily siloed industry, but we keep our eyes on the goal
of integrated care and keep telling our story.
How does First Step approach mental health issues that
may be associated with addiction, and what resources
are available for patients?
Clients come to First Step, usually self-referred, looking for
a group program, a GP that does Opiate Replacement
Therapy (such as methadone), or mental health supports.
Whichever door they enter through, the staff will talk to
them about other support needs. Their GP, for example, will
likely bring mental health or legal professionals into the
care team. The team and client will constantly liaise
through case conferences and meetings, prioritising
different aspects of support according to each client's
current needs and wishes.
Are there any new programs or initiatives that First
Step is planning to launch in the near future to enhance
its services?
We are in a constant state of innovation.
What are the goals you have in mind for the future of
First Step?
First Step's long-term goal is to influence the mental health
and alcohol and other drug sectors to aim for high-quality
and comprehensive integrated care as standard treatment.
First Step as at the start of a two-year impact evaluation,
which will provide unique insights for First Step, the State
Government and Victoria generally. First Step can provide
intensive support (multiple weekly consultations) to 25+
people for the cost of incarcerating just one person. State
government commissioning practices need to change in
order to create a community where people who use drugs
and people living with mental distress can live well, be safe
and be supported.
What advice would you give someone looking to
positively impact lives in the recovery industry?
This is an amazing industry with room for people from so
many different disciplines and walks of life. Lived
experience and peers are prized in the Australian recovery
sector, and the balance between clinical and non-clinical
roles is essential for any good service.

holistic approach to well-being is undeniable. Future
addiction treatment centers are poised to present a
multifaceted array of well-being programs. From bespoke
fitness routines to contemplative practices and nutritional
guidance, this comprehensive emphasis seeks to address not
only the addiction itself but to fortify the overall health and
resilience of individuals on their recovery journey.
The Therapeutic Alchemy of Psychedelics: A
groundswell of interest surrounds the therapeutic potential
of psychedelics like psilocybin and MDMA. Administered
in controlled and supervised environments, these substances
become catalysts for dismantling psychological barriers and
fostering introspection, potentially leading to a more
profound and enduring recovery. This emergent trend isn't
just a deviation; it's a complementary approach to
conventional therapies, promising novel dimensions in the
pursuit of lasting recovery.
A Community-Centric Focus on Peer Support:
Recognizing the pivotal role of community in the recovery
journey, upcoming treatment centers underscore the
significance of peer support and community integration.
Group therapy, peer mentorship, and active participation in
support groups play pivotal roles in fostering a sense of
belonging and mitigating the isolating effects often
intertwined with addiction.
Cultural Competence as the Bedrock: A heightened
awareness of cultural diversity is sculpting the future
landscape of addiction treatment. Treatment centers aspire
to cultivate inclusive environments that not only honor but
actively integrate diverse cultural perspectives. This
commitment to culturally proficient care ensures that
individuals from varied backgrounds receive treatment
aligned with their values and convictions.
The Evolution of Evidence-Based Therapies: While
traditional evidence-based therapies such as Cognitive
Behavioral Therapy (CBT) remain foundational, the future
envisions an evolution with the integration of innovative
therapeutic modalities. Virtual reality therapy, biofeedback,
and neurofeedback are emerging as pioneering approaches,
providing distinctive avenues to navigate the intricacies of
addiction and amplify treatment outcomes.
A Proactive Stance Through Early Intervention: A
discernible shift towards proactive intervention strategies
defines the future of recovery. Efforts are directed towards
identifying risk factors and implementing preventive
measures to stem the tide of substance abuse issues. This
preventative approach aims to address addiction at its
embryonic stages, potentially reducing the severity and
duration of required treatment.
Integrated Dual Diagnosis Treatment: Recognizing the
symbiotic relationship between substance use and mental
health disorders, forthcoming treatment centers magnify
their focus on integrated dual diagnosis treatment. This
approach ensures a comprehensive addressal of both facets,
fostering a more holistic and efficacious recovery journey.
In Conclusion: The trajectory of recovery within addiction
treatment centers unfolds as a dynamic fusion of
technological strides, personalized interventions, holistic
well-being, and an embrace of innovative therapeutic
methodologies. These trends weave a narrative of a
nuanced, responsive, and effective landscape, offering a
beacon of hope for individuals seeking enduring recovery
from the formidable challenges of addiction.
As the chapters of addiction treatment continue to unfold,
the promise of a brighter and more resilient future for those
on the path to recovery becomes increasingly tangible. This
evolution isn't just about staying current; it's about sculpting
a future where the journey to recovery is not only effective
but deeply personalized, holistic, and culturally sensitive. In
the vast expanse of the addiction treatment landscape, these
trends carve a path towards a more compassionate and
tailored approach, redefining what recovery means in the
years to come.

in Morrisville, Pennsylvania Good Friends Inc. offers a
safe haven for healing.
As a licensed residential treatment program, Good Friends
Inc. focuses on helping adult males aged 18 and older
navigate the challenges of substance use disorders. With

lives and relationships.
Brian Gadinski, the Executive Director of Good Friends
Inc., brings a wealth of experience to the organization. With
a background in the mental and social services fields, Brian
has been leading the team since September 6, 2022. As a
Licensed Professional Counselor in Pennsylvania, Brian has
spent four years helping clients navigate stress and anxiety.
With a compassionate approach, Good Friends Inc. strives
to empower individuals to reclaim their lives and embrace a

At Good Friends, Inc., the core mission is clear: "to provide
comprehensive and quality behavioral health and related
services in the continuum of care for adult males who are
chemically dependent." This commitment extends to
promoting the physical, spiritual, and emotional well-being
of these men, while also addressing the needs of the
community and consumers it serves. This dedication is
upheld through rigorous measurement and evaluation of
program effectiveness, efficient utilization of administrative
systems, ensuring a safe environment, and active
participation in treatment programs.
With a committed board of directors, effective leadership,
and a dedicated staff focused on client welfare, Good
Friends Inc. has become a trusted partner in the journey of
addiction recovery.
From Struggle to Strength
Brian's journey has been marked by significant challenges
and triumphs. His battle with drug and alcohol addiction
began at the tender age of 12, escalating over the years and
leading to encounters with adversity including
imprisonment and near-death experiences. However, his
path took a positive turn in 2008 when he embraced
recovery, embarking on a transformative journey that led
him through inpatient treatment and a recovery house.
Settling in Pottstown, PA, Brian pursued higher education,
initiating a new chapter in his life by enrolling in college
classes.
In 2011, Brian secured his first job in the human services
sector as a counsellor assistant at Wedge Recovery Center
in Philadelphia, PA. Through dedication and perseverance,
he advanced within the organization, eventually assuming
the role of Facility Director in 2016. Armed with a master's
degree in psychology and licensure as a Professional
Counselor in Pennsylvania, Brian attributes much of his
success to the guidance of his mentors along the way.
In September of 2022, Brian was appointed as the
Executive Director of Good Friends Inc. by the board of
directors, succeeding the retiring Executive Director, Ted
Millard, who had led the organization for 27 years. Brian's
focus since joining Good Friends Inc. has been to uphold its
mission faithfully, ensuring its continued operation in
service to the community.
Reflecting on his journey, Brian expresses his passion for
working in the addictions field, fueled by the belief in the
unexplored potential within each client served. He
recognizes the importance of empathy, encouragement, and
thought-provoking questions in inspiring individuals to
strive for positive change in their lives.
Dedicated Staff—A Cornerstone of Care
At Good Friends Inc., the staff's exceptional dedication is
evident in their everyday actions. Brian expresses deep
appreciation for the professionalism and compassion
exhibited by the team. With a clear understanding of their
roles, the staff execute their duties diligently, creating a
positive atmosphere within the organization. Many team
members have remained with Good Friends Inc. for years,
driven by their passion for the work. Notably, Terica
Smiley, the clinical director, exemplifies this spirit, having
dedicated over 30 years of her expertise to the agency,
enriching it with her remarkable contributions.
Striving for Excellence
Brian emphasizes the agency's commitment to adhering to
CARF policies, recognizing their importance in enhancing
the overall programming at Good Friends Inc. He highlights
the organization's ongoing evaluation of various program
aspects, ensuring alignment with best practices. These
evaluations encompass areas such as risk management,
technology integration, cultural competency, strategic
planning, and more, reflecting Good Friends Inc.'s
dedication to maintaining excellence and relevance in its
services.
Charting Progress
Brian envisions a future for Good Friends Inc. that is
marked by continuous progress, recognizing the ever-
evolving nature of the healthcare field. Together with the
board of directors, he has initiated preliminary discussions
regarding potential expansion plans over the coming years.
Their aim is to extend support to a broader spectrum of
individuals, including those with different diagnoses from
their current clientele. Specifically, they contemplate the
establishment of a co-occurring halfway house facility.
Despite these prospective developments, Brian emphasizes
that maintaining the organization's commitment to
excellence in serving existing clients remains the primary
focus, both in the current program and any new ventures.

Compassion builds trust and understanding between staff and patients, setting the stage for successful therapy. Diverse Therapies The toolbox of top-notch rehab centers is full of different therapies designed for various needs. Behind closed doors, you'll find evidence-based therapies like CBT, DBT, and MET. These aren't just for individual sessions; they often pop up in group therapy too. Group therapy provides a sense of community and shared experiences, breaking down the loneliness that often comes with addiction. Involving Families Effective treatment goes beyond the individual to include their support network, especially family. Behind closed doors, successful rehab centers understand how addiction affects family dynamics and actively bring family members into the recovery process. Family therapy sessions create a space for open communication, mending relationships, and building a supportive environment for the person in recovery. By involving the family, these centers recognize the importance of relationships and work on strengthening that support system. Planning for Life After Recovery doesn't end when the treatment program does. Successful rehab centers know the importance of planning for what comes next. Behind closed doors, they carefully craft aftercare plans that include continued counseling, support groups, and strategies to prevent relapse. Aftercare planning isn't a one-size-fits-all checklist. It's a personalized roadmap that considers an individual's goals, challenges, and triggers. This thoughtful approach aims to equip people with what they need to face life after treatment successfully. Dealing with Dual Issues Behind the scenes of successful rehab centers is an understanding that substance abuse often goes hand in hand with mental health issues. They call it "dual diagnosis." These centers address both the substance use and mental health problems at the same time. By tackling underlying mental health issues, these centers not only boost the effectiveness of addiction treatment but also contribute to a person's long-term well-being. It's a two-pronged approach showing these centers are committed to thorough and comprehensive care. In Conclusion Behind closed doors, top-notch rehab centers stand as beacons of hope and healing. The strategies they use, from personalized plans to a holistic approach and caring staff, create an atmosphere that supports recovery. By uncovering the mystery behind their success, we get a glimpse into the many sides of addiction treatment and the dedication needed to guide people toward a lasting recovery. In the world of addiction treatment, the best centers aren't just closing doors; they're opening them to a future free from the chains of substance abuse. 20 February 2024

Seeking assistance from an addiction recovery center is crucial for ensuring a complete and effective recovery. This is where First Step, a distinguished not-for-profit addiction, mental health, and legal services hub in St Kilda, Melbourne, steps in. First Step stands out in the field of addiction recovery with its unique approach, tailoring its services to each individual's needs. The organization, led by CEO Patrick Lawrence, is more than just a recovery center; it is a place that offers hope and lasting change. Patrick has propelled First Step into a comprehensive resource for those seeking transformation. The mission of First Step is twofold. Firstly, it aims to provide a welcoming and hope-filled environment for individuals seeking support for alcohol and other drugs or mental distress. Secondly, the organization strives to create an integrated community of care, enhancing each person's agency, resilience, and connection. Under Patrick's leadership, First Step envisions a community where individuals grappling with substance use and mental distress can not only recover but also thrive in a safe and supportive environment. Our team recently had a conversation with Patrick Lawrence to delve into the profound impact of First Step and his instrumental role in advancing the organization's mission. Please introduce yourself and share about your career transition into the world of social justice. I come from a family of professional musicians and had a first career as a classical pianist working and studying in Australia, Europe and the US. Upon return to Australia in 2002 I found myself in a notorious suburb of Melbourne, volunteering at a small not-for-profit organisation that was detoxing people off heroin in what was essentially a specialized GP practice. I was drawn to the practical nature of the work with the capacity each and every day to provide support for people with pretty complicated lives. I still make music, but gradually the community work took over. Brief our readers about the First Step. What were the core values and mission that led to its establishment? First Step was created at the height (July 2000) and heart (St Kilda) of the heroin overdose epidemic in Melbourne. The building we still occupy was purchased to provide a place where everybody had every chance to turn their lives around. Over time our focus broadened to include clinical and psycho-social mental health services and legal services, and we now provide an integrated community of care and support, maximizing each person's agency, resilience and connection. We value compassion, respect and innovation, and provided our services free of charge. Shed some light on your journey at First Step that led you to the CEO position. While maintaining a part-time role at First Step for many years, I developed my management capacity in other organisations, primarily at the extraordinary Asylum What makes First Step unique is the mul -disciplinary and highly collabora ve team that ensures we can provide people with almost all the help they need, from one team in one place. How does First Step approach addiction recovery differently from other treatment centers, and what makes it unique? What makes First Step unique is the multi-disciplinary and highly collaborative team that ensures we can provide people with almost all the help they need, from one team in one place. This means a) people get access to the professionals they need, b) those professionals work together as a team, and c) progress can be consolidated to achieve incremental, whole-of-life improvements. First Step is literally the only outpatient service in Australia with GPs and nurses, psychologists and mental health nurses, psycho-social workers and lawyers. What are some of the biggest challenges that First Step faces as a non-profit organization in helping people overcome addiction? How does the organization address them? First Step works with people with co-occurring needs across substance use, mental health, housing, social inclusion and legal support, which is the norm for people who grew up in out-of-home care, survivors of childhood or adult neglect and abuse, and people who grew up in poverty. Bringing compassion and respect to the process of understanding the whole person, including their trauma, is essential to treatment and support, along with a welcoming, hope-filled environment. Funding is a constant challenge in a heavily siloed industry, but we keep our eyes on the goal of integrated care and keep telling our story. How does First Step approach mental health issues that may be associated with addiction, and what resources are available for patients? Clients come to First Step, usually self-referred, looking for a group program, a GP that does Opiate Replacement Therapy (such as methadone), or mental health supports. Whichever door they enter through, the staff will talk to them about other support needs. Their GP, for example, will likely bring mental health or legal professionals into the care team. The team and client will constantly liaise through case conferences and meetings, prioritising different aspects of support according to each client's current needs and wishes. Are there any new programs or initiatives that First Step is planning to launch in the near future to enhance its services? We are in a constant state of innovation. What are the goals you have in mind for the future of First Step? First Step's long-term goal is to influence the mental health and alcohol and other drug sectors to aim for high-quality and comprehensive integrated care as standard treatment. First Step as at the start of a two-year impact evaluation, which will provide unique insights for First Step, the State Government and Victoria generally. First Step can provide intensive support (multiple weekly consultations) to 25+ people for the cost of incarcerating just one person. State government commissioning practices need to change in order to create a community where people who use drugs and people living with mental distress can live well, be safe and be supported. What advice would you give someone looking to positively impact lives in the recovery industry? This is an amazing industry with room for people from so many different disciplines and walks of life. Lived experience and peers are prized in the Australian recovery sector, and the balance between clinical and non-clinical roles is essential for any good service.
