Subduction zones occur at convergent plate boundaries where one tectonic plate slides under another plate. There are two types of lithosphere - oceanic and continental - and subduction zones can involve either oceanic-oceanic convergence, oceanic-continental convergence, or continental-continental convergence. Subduction zones are where one plate is pushed down into the mantle as it slides under the edge of another plate.
