Environmental Conservationism
Intro: The conservation movement had the ultimate goal to utilize nature including its natural
resources proficiently and effectively. In the late 19th century, the existence of the human race relied
upon specific resources in their everyday life. Nonrenewable resources such as oil and coal were in
high demand. The interest in demand/another word of these resources greatly increased through the
years, though the resource itself did not. Specifically, conservation elaborated/generated the new
idea behind environmentalism, the concern for maintaining the environment. The popularity of
conservation came from individual's newfound focus on the environment, as the frontier had

Conservation And Environmental Conservation
The ultimate aspiration of the conservation movement was to empower society to proficiently and
effectively utilize its natural resources. Since the founding of the United States, Americans have
become dependent upon the existence of raw materials. With the further western expansion, and the
increasing population, nonrenewable resources such as oil and coal were in high demand. Although
there was a sudden increase in the demand for these resources, the supply of the resource stayed
constant. Specifically, conservation highlighted the new idea behind environmentalism, the concern
for maintaining the environment. The popularity of conservation came from individuals newfound
focus on the environment, as the western frontier had officially been closed. This was due in part to
Theodore Roosevelt and Gifford Pinchot's philosophies and mandates, which spearheaded efforts to
have Americans view their use and abuse of their environment differently, and their resulting
benefits.
The practice of conservationism was a heavily contested topic during the time of Theodore
Roosevelt's presidency. As the 26th President of the United States of America, Roosevelt enacted the
Square Deal, which was a policy where he had complete control of corporations, the ability to
protect consumers, and the need to conserve natural resources. He initiated The Desert Land Act,
which gave the federal government the authority to sell arid land at a low price, if the customer

What Is The Purpose Of Obama's Speech On Gun Violence
On January 5, 2016, President Obama gave a speech at the White House announcing his executive
action on gun control, which was relevant as there were numerous mass shootings that took place all
over the nation. The purpose of his speech was to essentially persuade and inform the public for the
need of background checks for buying guns and to urge congress to take action. The fact that Obama
had people on stage with him who were affected by gun violence was an attention getter and made
his speech powerful as viewers were able to see that gun violence can affect anyone. Obama
continued to use Pathos in his speech as he talked about the miracle recovery of former
congresswomen Gabrielle Gifford, who was shot in the head during the 2011 Tucson

Loss Of Happiness In The Tin Flute, By Gabrielle Roy
When people have a chance at being happy they throw everything they have into that opportunity
because they do not want it to pass by them and live the rest of their life wondering what if. That is
what Florentine was battling with in The Tin Flute. She does not know if she should follow Jean and
see the movie with him or let him pass her by. Florentine is almost afraid to say no because she
wants this chance at happiness. In "The Tin Flute" by Gabrielle Roy the reader should learn that
people can throw everything they have into a chance at happiness because they are afraid of what
may happen if they let it pass.
Florentine is torn between whether or not to go with Jean Lévesque and leave her current life
behind. While working at her job in a diner she is approached by a man who wants to take her out
and Florentine is not sure if she should follow him or let him leave. After taking a rest from her job
and thinking about her life and what she might become she decides that she "must immediately
stake everything she has to offer, on one wild chance of happiness." Florentine knows that what she
is thinking about doing is crazy and that most people would not follow a man they knew almost
nothing about to the movies but she wants to take that chance because ... Show more content on

The Legacy Of President Theodore Roosevelt
Of our 45 presidents, Theodore Roosevelt is not one that will be easily forgotten. During his time,
his accomplishments wrought a change in the United States, and are still impacting us today, even
long after his death. Among his many notable feats, many consider his conservation efforts
specifically to be his legacy. He had a love and passion for nature, and he even became a permanent
fixture of nature when his face was carved into a wall of rock, as one of the four presidents of
Mount Rushmore. During the 1900s, "conservation" was not a word often thrown around in
conversation. Today however, conflicts such as limited resources, conservation, climate change, and
environment are words that have been on everyone's lips at one point or ... Show more content on

Before he took up any important roles such as governor or president, he still managed to make an
impact on conservation. Even his hobbies were influential; his love of hunting wild animals resulted
in many valuable contributions to natural history museums.
Roosevelt jumped from occupation to occupation as he aged, gradually gaining positions of higher
influence. One such occupation was a soldier of the Spanish–american war, and feats and bravery in
the war are what led him to become governor of New York in 1898 upon his return. Now that he had
higher status, Roosevelt was able to make bigger impacts upon the conservation movement. He
formed the Boone and Crockett Club in the 1890's. The club was comprised mainly of hunters and
conservationists. Hunters see and understand firsthand the effects of overhunting. The club worked
on protecting national parks, and expanding and creating wildlife refuges and reserves, as well as
raising funds for conservation. It was during this time that Theodore Roosevelt met Gifford Pinchot,
who was involved in the U.S. department of agriculture and was also a member of the Boone and
Crockett Club. Roosevelt liked to surround himself with likeminded men who he believed could and
wanted to make a difference in terms of resource management and conservation. Teddy approved of
Pinchot's dedication, and their friendship remained strong throughout Roosevelt's time as governor
and president. Pinchot

Looking at images like this analytically would be an excellent first step when crafting a research
paper. The image "Theodore Roosevelt and John Muir at Glacier Point, Yosemite" could inspire a
visual studies student to delve into further research on the creation of national parks, the politics
surrounding their establishment or the establishment of Yosemite specifically, or even more specific
research on either Theodore Roosevelt or John Muir. Personally, this image made me more
interested in understanding the use of images to market the national parks in the early twentieth
century and how this has changed with the rise of new technologies in the subsequent decades.
Images like "Theodore Roosevelt and John Muir at Glacier Point, Yosemite" can also be used to
supplement a completed research paper. If one were to write a research paper about the
establishment of the National Park System, the image "Theodore Roosevelt and John Muir at
Glacier Point, Yosemite" would be a good accompaniment. Not only is it informative in its own
right, but it also spurs curiosity in the viewer. Is the image part of a series of photographs of
Roosevelt's travels with Muir? Did the two men like each other or were they just posing together for
posterity? And for the modern environmentalist, the essential question maybe what does this
landscape look like now? The answers to these questions could be answered within the text of the
research paper. It is suspected that the most important images for the research paper will be those
that require additional explanation for full comprehension. This marries the text and images into one

A Human For Nature Essay
A Human For Nature
When looking at the issue of humans and nature throughout history, one significant figure stands out
in my mind: Theodore Roosevelt. Without him, the most beautiful and serene places in North
America may have been destroyed or fallen to the hands of developers. Development and
conservation of land have been issues that we have faced since Europeans first landed in America.
Today, environmental issues are a concern that any contending political candidate must address. In
focusing on Theodore Roosevelt, we will find a basis for preservation in America. We will also
explore some of the preservation actions that take place in our world today.
The original forests in the United States covered an extremely large amount ... Show more content

Yet for the most part, the loggers, the government, and the rest of the country still viewed the land
and forests of America as endless and interminable.
Fortunately, an individual came along who put future public interest above the current private
interest of the nations resources: Theodore Roosevelt. Over the course of his life Roosevelt has been
responsible for creating 4 Big Game Refugees, 51 National Bird Reservations, the National Forrest
Service and five National Parks including Crater Lake in Oregon and the Anasazi ruins at Mesa
Verde, Colorodo1. He brought many of our countries most beautiful landscapes into the light that
they deserved. In doing so, these national "jewels" were recognized by the government as natural
resources that require federal management for their up keep. The contributions that Roosevelt has
made to our country allow him to truly be considered a human for nature.
Theodore Roosevelt was born in New York City in 1858 and grew up in a wealthy family. Despite
being sick due to asthma, Theodore spent most of his time outside. Theodore's childhood showed the
first signs of his love for nature and animals. Theodore's interests likely came from his father who

Conservation and Preservation at the Turn of the 19th Century

The environmentalist movement of the late 19th and early 20th centuries presents a picture of
America at the time: torn between the desires to expand while seeking to protect nature. Although
all members of the movement sought to protect nature, there were two predominant schools as to
how to go about this. In their two philosophies, they created two methods for human interaction with
the wilderness. The conservationist movement can be called the utilitarian movement, and sought
the greatest good for the greatest number over the longest term. In contrast, the preservationist
school aimed at keeping nature in its current state, although the ... Show more content on

This networking would serve him later in life, but first he had to receive an education in forestry,
something unavailable in America. Thus he traveled to Germany to study forestry theory in
Germany and England. The time spent in Europe formed the foundation of his beliefs on
conservation and through him those of the conservationist movement.
"Pinchot left Europe with some convictions about forestry. He had learned... that trees are a crop...
Pinchot brought the gospel that forestry was the art of using a forest without destroying it... [He]
preached that through the use of proper methods a forest could be both harvested and preserved."
(McGeary 23) This conviction reveals the underlying theory to all of the conservation movement,
that nature should be viewed in the confines of its economic value. For example, Pinchot's policy
did not allow for the continuation of old growth forests, but demanded that they be cut down and let
new trees to grow back in their place. "He clashed repeatedly during his career with conservationists
who were basically devoted to preserving the trees." (McGeary 87)
To understand where the motivation and passion to protect the environment was developed, one
looks to the rapid deforestation of East Coast old–growth forests at the turn of the century. "As
Gifford Pinchot expressed it, 'The American Colossus was fiercely at work turning natural resources
into money.' 'A

Her world came to a crash the day she was shot, point–blank, in front of a grocery store. With all of
this gun violence going on recently the Senate has been flooded with gun–control legislation. Some
of it is radical but the majority of the laws are no–brainers, like the background check law struck
down by the senate earlier in the congressional session. The law required that background checks be
given before the purchase of a firearm, and was supported by "Ninety per cent of Americans," and
"eighty–five per cent of gun owners" (Talbot, 2014). Interest groups like the NRA are scaring our
legislators into making decisions that do not reflect the wishes of the population as a whole. In order
to prevent shootings like those in Connecticut and Colorado, a bill was passed in the House of
Representatives requiring a background check before the purchase of a firearm. However, when
placed in the hands of the Senate, cowardice got the best of them. Gifford writes "These senators
made their decision based on political fear and on cold calculations about the money of special
interest..." (Giffords, 2013). Her experience in The Capitol gives her the credibility to be able to

what this bill could possibly prevent. The ethical rhetoric in this article is mostly, if not all,
regarding the author's credibility and experience. Ethos is the primary rhetoric used by Gifford

Nature : Conservation And Conservation
Americans began to worry about their connection with nature when cities gained popularity and
frontier closed. In the late 1800's, Americans began to take notice the land they relied on for
resources was beginning to show signs of overuse (Roosevelt, Theodore). The two most prominent
activists for the conservation and preservation of American soil were Gifford Pinchot and John
Muir. These two men both fought for regulation on how the land was used, but disputed over what
this use looked like. Pinchot believed in conservation which meant using the natural resources to
serve the needs of Americans for the longest time (Warren, 201). On the other side of the movement,
Muir believed that man should leave nature untouched and left in its purist form.(Muir 40)
Conservation and preservation impacted not only the land but, also on the people who lived on the
land. The conservation and preservation movement benefited whites of upper and middle class who
were able to earn a profit, explore, and utilize the nature that was being conserved/preserved.
Consequently, the conservation and preservation movements created greater hardship for those who
relied on nature's resources to survive, including, but not limited to the working class of Ely,
Minnesota and the Indians in Yosemite National Park.
Ely, Minnesota is a prime example of how the conservation and preservation movement created a
greater divide between the upper and lower classes. The elites of Ely greatly benefited from the

As the children grew up, the scientists used MRI and EEG scans to observe their brains. During the
first two years of this study, they found out that the children who were learning music were maturing
faster and developing much more of an auditory pathway than the others. "The enhanced maturity
reflects an increase in neuroplasticity – a physiological change in the brain in response to its
environment – in this case, exposure to music and music instruction" (Gersema). This fast
development of the brain's neuroplasticity, and auditory pathway can accelerate certain abilities like
language development, communication, and reading skills.
Studies done by the Children's Music Workshop showed that music education has an effect on
language development. Musical training "physically develops the part of the left side of the brain
known to be involved with processing language, and can actually wire the brain's circuits in specific
ways. Linking familiar songs to new information can also help imprint information on young minds"
("The Benefits of Music Education"). Like singing a list of words to a familiar tune, such as Mary

musical training "helps the brain work more efficiently in distinguishing split–second differences
between rapidly changing sounds that are essential to processing language" (Trei). As an individual
who is learning both music and language, I can personally attest

Essay on Tuscon: Who is to Blame?
In "After Tucson: Why are the mentally ill still bearing arms?," author Nathan Thornburgh (2011)

left six dead and congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords severely wounded. Thornburgh is quick to
dismiss gun control and gun rights advocates' reactions to the event but instead focuses solely on
gunman, Jared Loughner's, mental illness. Specifically, Thornburgh blames college officials, and
other organizations for not reporting their contacts with Loughner, and blames the lack of

According to the GOA website, Giffords was given the grade of "D," which the GOA defines as
"leans anti–gun: usually against us" (para. 1). The internet website, On the Issues, reports that
Giffords supported law to "maintain and strengthen the enforcement of existing state restrictions on
the purchase and possessions of guns" (para. 1). However, Thornburgh insists the focus should not
be on politics but on how a mentally ill individual like Loughner was allowed to buy a gun.
Thornburgh does not claim he is credentialed; however he diagnoses Loughner as "clearly
delusional," after viewing videos on the internet attributed to the gunman (para. 4). Thornburgh
further promotes his premise by claiming Loughner was suspended from college for "mental
problems" (para. 4). Pima Community College Department of Public Safety records (AZ Central

and disturbances. The only mention of Loughner's mental health is in a disturbance report where an

Carl Sandburg And The American Dream
The American Dream is a well known concept and idea that many immigrants and Americans
strived for in order to become successful. Unlike most countries where rising from rags to riches
was highly uncommon and a hopeless dream, America was a place for people to work hard and
achieve their dreams. Carl Sandburg was a very influential poet who came from very humble
beginnings under immigrant parents who had moved to America. He believed in an ordered society
where people could strive and accomplish what they chose without being influenced by the majority
of the country. To achieve the American Dream, Sandburg had to travel across the States, overcome
challenging experiences, such as searching for newspapers to work for, keeping a job, and dealing
with the death of his daughter Madeline. His American Dream of becoming a successful poet,
journalist, and goal of leaving a lasting legacy only became reality after many years of hard work
and perseverance.
To begin, there are not many people who can say that their childhood started with joining the army,
later living on the streets, and working a variety of jobs. Due to these circumstances, Sandburg had
many goals and even more ideals he wished to share to the world. As a youth, he lived a difficult
life, as he quit school in 8th grade and was always busy working to help his family by delivering
milk, collecting ice, laying bricks, and more, before becoming a hobo in 1897 (Barr 1). Sandburg

Gun Control in America Essay
Gun control laws in America have been a long standing issue that is still a problem today. In
America it is excessively easier to obtain a gun license than to obtain a driver's license. Americans
who want to obtain a license to drive in the United States must pass a written and a driving test with
a government official driving instructor. Some states require a drug and alcohol course before
issuing a license to drive. The same concept should apply for obtaining a gun license. Due to guns
licenses not being a test in ability like a driver's license, obtaining a gun is like being given a deadly
device without having to know how to properly control it when in use, or use it properly. This is
because the law has not caught up to the social ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

The laws for purchasing guns do not account for the mental state of others enough. Anyone can just
walk into a gun store and buy a gun the same day in some stores ,without proper psychological
examinations to determine if they are mentally fit enough to use in wisely. In 1991 the government
survey Women, Easterners and Democrats to see who wanted to ban handguns, the results were over
50 percent who wanted to ban hand guns. In 2011, it dropped down to the low 30 percent tile. The
survey showed more Americans wanted to keep their rights to own a handgun in 2011 than in 1991.
Guns offer to some, protection and a way to cope with the dangers of the outside world. In 2008,
there were over 16,000 murders in the United States, of those murders 67 percent were firearm

for their bravery on the job. These politicians spoke out against what they believed was wrong, and
didn't simply conform into what their party wanted them to be. A recent politician, who has showed
immense bravery, is Gabrielle Giffords. She is a democrat from Arizona, who was shot in the head

Gabrielle Dee Giffords was born and raised in Tucson Arizona on June 8, 1970. Her parents were
Gloria Kay Giffords and Spencer J. Giffords. Her father was a Jewish man, and her mother practiced

University High School in Tucson Arizona. Then, she went on to attend Acripps College where she
received her Bachelor of Arts degree in both Sociology and Latin American History. Next, she

The Relationship Between Gun Control And The Justice System
Excellent and challenging topic, and based on your analysis, I concur it is challenging to find gun
control articles. There are a couple of books, but very few old articles. However, in the coming
years, that may change as the discussion about gun control has become an ordinary national debate
now. One of the most recent books which speak on this subject was published 2018 by Routledge,
and its focus was to see what the public opinions were about gun control and the justice system
(Roberts, 2018). Compare to the past; more people have shown concerns about crime and gun issues
than ever before. For example, a study was conducted in 1993 to measure how society felt about gun
control, and only 5% were concerned that crime was the number one national

Ethical Issues with Sweatshops
Ethical issues regarding Sweatshops Michelle Rice Business Ethics Jacqueline Newkirk Remember
when you were at the mall the last time and saw a pair of Nike shoes that you just couldn't live
without? You had to buy them, for a pricey cost, and just loved them, right? We all have owned a
pair or two of Nike shoes in our life. They were the "cool" shoes to have back when I was in school.
The thing that we may not have known is that Nike has been using "children as young as fifteen
years old" (Jennings, 2012) as employees to make these shoes. In the following report I am going to

Peter Squires is a professor of criminology and public policy and his book analyzes gun control in

in America and tries to evaluate what will work in terms of gun control through philosophical
questioning and examining federal laws that are currently in effect. The tone of the book certainly
gives way to an unmistakable anti–gun stance. This book definitely works in the context of gun
violence in America specifically under the first chapter's section entitled, The Gun Question, where
Squires writes about whether people have an inherent right to own a

The Importance Of Music Therapy
A bullet to the left of the brain almost caused Congresswoman, Gabrielle Giffords, a permanent
speech imparity. Gabrielle experienced aphasia (a language disorder that stops communication), but
she participated in music therapy for healing. She learned how to think straightforwardly by
matching the lyrics of the song to the rhythm and the melody. In the right side of the brain, singing
abilities occur, but on the left side people can work around the injury by dropping the melody after
they sing their thoughts (Harvard). Eventually, due to this music therapy process, Gabrielle
recovered and got her speech ability back. Even though music is used everyday as entertainment, it
can also be used as a treatment option to help people. Music therapy has been able to help people
communicate and it has recovered speech and hearing imparities. Music therapy is the use of music
elements by music therapist to help restore and maintain physical, mental, spiritual, and emotional
health. Music therapy opens a path of communication for people who have trouble communicating
through words. Doctors should use music therapy more as a treatment in hospitals, nursing homes,
and rehabilitation centers.
Participating in music therapy was found to help people who experience self–esteem issues and
depression. A scientific study was performed by a group of scientist in Poole, England to prove
whether or not music lessened the amount of depression a child felt. Bournemouth University in

The Biological And Psychological Trait Theory
The Biological and Psychological Trait Theories are theories that are used to try and explain
deviance. Biological Trait Theory stems from the Italian School of Criminology (mid–nineteenth
century), head by criminologist Cesare Lombroso. Lombroso argued that criminality was a
biological trait found in humans. Lombroso's idea of atavism connected an individual's appearance
and their biological inclination to criminal activity. The Psychological Trait Theory focused on the
mental aspects of explaining criminal activity by evaluating their intelligence, personality, and
learning behavior. There are three subunits of the Psychological Trait Theory, which are the
psychodynamic theory, behavioral theory, and cognitive theory. Sigmund Freud developed the
psychodynamic theory with his research of the conscious, preconscious, and unconscious functions
of the mind. The behavioral theory is about developing human actions through learning experiences.
It explains that crime is learned from life situations. People aren't born with violent tendencies,
rather it's learned from life experiences. Three sources of this behavior are family, the media, and the
environment. Cognitive theory focuses on how people perceive and mentally represent the world
around them and solve problems. In the case of Jared Loughner, the psychological trait theory is the
most applicable. With his diagnosis of being a paranoid schizophrenic, that connects him to both the
psychodynamic perspective and

The Struggle Between Economics And Ecology
Right from the end of the 19th Century and the beginning of the 20th Century, there has been a
fierce debate concerning how economic growth or development affects the environment or
ecological setup of a country. The debate has its basis on whether it would be recommendable for a
nation to concentrate on growing its economy while at the same time hurting or harming its
ecological system. Naturalists like Pinchot Gifford, John Muir, Love Canal and Cuyahoga County
always argued in favor of environmental preservation as opposed to concentrating all efforts towards
developing the economy (Olmes 154; Miller 150–51). This paper will, therefore, discuss the
struggle between economics and ecology specifically looking at particular events across the
Twentieth Century. It will also attempt to explain the factors involved in the pursuit for change on
the way people and the administration perceived the environmental conservation as opposed to
economic growth.
The Twentieth Century conservationists like John Muir and Gifford Pinchot always argued that it
was important for the government of the day to strike a balance between the two conflicting goals of
economic development and environmental conservation. According to Menzel (2007; 3– 4), other
environmental movements in the USA had been in constant conflict with industrial enterprises. The
major root cause of conflict being the fact that industrial enterprises had ignored the fact their
activities were hurting the environment through

Tucson Shooting Essay
January 8, 2011 was the best day of my life. That was the day I've waited for and planned for a very
long time. Shooting all those innocent people, especially Gabrielle Giffords, gave me such a rush. I
can say that I finally made a name for myself and got the revenge I wanted. Why did I do this? The
reason why is because Gabrielle is so stupid. I went to one of her events in 2007, and when I met
her, I thought she was just very annoying. She thinks she can change the world, but actually I'm the
one who can change the world for the better. I can remember her terrified face when I pointed my
gun right on her forehead and pulled the trigger. If the police didn't show up, I know I could have
done more damage. But anyways, I'm proud of what I ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

of the students and instructors from Pima college thought that he was, "creepy, very hostile,

violent videos and talk about how the world should be and how he will fix it. When going through
Jared's "Google" history, "the FBI found that he was looking at Web sites related to lethal injection
and Web sites about famous assassins days before the shooting, including the evening and morning
hours leading up to the event" ("Arizona Shooting"). In addition, investigators said that Jared "also
posted a note on his MySpace page hours before the shooting saying goodbye friends and posed in
photographs with a Glock semiautomatic pistol that is believed to be the same one used in the
shooting"(Goldstein and Lacey). All of these hints indicated that he was up to no good, but nobody
was willing to get him any treatment. Then again, sometimes it may not be as easy as people think.

Gunned Down: The Power of the NRA The documentary starts by telling the story of Gabrielle
Giffords being shot outside a Safeway grocery store and continues by showing a part of President
Obama's speech after the incident. It then addresses the fact that the President didn't even attempt to
increase gun control since the NRA has so much power. The Columbine High School massacre is
then discussed along with a speech by the NRA president. Gun sales increased significantly after
this massacre since people thought gun control would become more strict. The documentary states
that the NRA originally focused on hunting and how to shoot a gun but the assassinations of the 60's
made them change their focus to gun control. After the Columbine massacre,

Bring Back the Assault Weapon Ban
The Second Amendment gives average citizens the right to keep and bear arms. This has been an
occurring issue for a while now but the recent school shooting by Adam Lanza in December of
2012, an unstable man who had access to assault weapons killed 26 people. Do you feel safe under
The Second Amendment? Many people think these mass shootings could have been stopped if the
government had never repealed the 1994 assault weapon ban or if we had universal background
checks, keeping this ban active could have saved 26 adults and kids from their death. Not only do
mass shooting occur too often but so do attacks that end in tragedy. Trayvon Martin is just one of
many who was killed for being an average teen in the U.S. only his life was cut short because he
decided to walk through a very unwelcoming neighborhood. Under the Second Amendment
everyday citizens are not protected by the current gun control laws. Mass shootings occur often
around a country that is the land of the free and seems to be safe. Universal background checks is a
necessity. Too many assault weapons get into the hands of wrong people and the consequences are
irreversible. One incident that happened in Connecticut is the Sandy Hook Elementary School. This
is a prime example of how assualt weapons got into the hands of the wrong person. Adam Lanza
was not the owner of these guns but he had access to them. With universal background checks the
lives of 20 kids and 6 adults could have been protected.

The history of mankind has been predominantly influenced by the use of the various purposes of the
manmade tool. From one's first feeble steps as an infant one uses the sturdy aid of a table or chair to
support oneself. As he progresses in age, one will use a variety of tools to aid and at times protect
oneself from the many external factors that will plague one. In each civilization, from the Ancient
World's catapults and clubs to the nuclear and machine weapons that predominated the World Wars,
history has been forged in the bloodshed of men, women, and children akin. From war to immediate
survival humans have been dependent upon the use of these weapons, such as guns, to maintain

decisions, gun control laws, and incidents spark calls for reform. Many troubles were caused by bear

Firearms caused a lot of trouble in the United States for example, 68 percent of murders, 41 percent
of robberies, and 21 percent of aggravated assaults were all related to firearms in 2011. A lot of
firearm shooting in the public cases happened for the court to reform the law. Congresswoman
Gabrielle Giffords got shot in the head by a gunman in grocery store parking lot in Arizona. "The
gunman killed six people, including a nine–year–old girl" (Opposing viewpoints....). There was a
school shooting in Newton, Connecticut on December 14, 2002. A gunman, about twenty years old.
Entered the school's main entrance and shot five people including teachers and students. After that
he went into a classroom and shot twenty first graders and six teachers before he killed himself.
After this case, President Barack Obama tried to change the gun control laws to prevent innocent
people from getting killed by firearms. "Obama's act did not pass the Senate. But many supporters
continue the fight to change gun control laws to prevent murders in the United States" (Opposing

An Informative Essay on Gun Control
Due date Informative Essay on Gun Control Introduction The right to possess guns is a fundamental
element to American identity. The right to own and operate guns under certain circumstances is in
fact guaranteed as part of the United States Constitution. Over the course of American history and
particularly in the 21st century, there exists a great debate over the possession of guns of private
citizens. Both sides of the debate argue with fervor. There are those that argue fervently for the right
to possess arms; they argue for guns with regard to home protection, property protection, personal
security, and that it is a fundamental right as a citizen. On the other side, there are those that
reference the persistence of accidental injuries and fatalities that are gun related. People on this side
of the debate argue for the banishment of guns, for stricter gun control laws, and for restrictions on
certain kinds of high caliber guns and ammunition. They argue for the safety of the general
population and for the lack of responsibility of those in possession of guns. They additionally
reference the excessive amount of gun violence in media such as music, films, animation, and video
games trying providing moderate to exceptional evidence that access to excessive violent imagery in
conjunction with what they view as slack gun control policies is an equation for tragedies that
society is unprepared to handle and should not have to. Each side of the gun control debate has

Ethical Use Of Child Labor
Abstract The United States has strict labor laws that forbid the use of child labor in the workforce
and prohibit purchasing from suppliers who have utilize child labor. Some companies, such as
Walmart, who order goods from foreign suppliers have gotten their feet in hot water because these
suppliers did not always follow the same ethics that the United States has. Suppliers in Asia often
work children 12–15 hour days in order to meet quotas and keep the cost of labor down (Lau, 2012.)
In an effort to save money on raw materials and goods, some organizations, including Walmart, have
purchased goods from suppliers who work children outrageously long hours. This benefits
supercenters in the United States because they are able to get products for a cheaper price, however
it breaks laws The United States has set for organizations to hold them at a higher standard.
History Child labor is something that has been utilized in almost every civilization and had no
regulation up until the last century. Children would complete any tasks their family deemed fit
including but not limited to: farming on their families' land, farming for other farmers, hunting and
gathering food, and craftsman work. Then, when the Industrial Revolution came, children as young
as 5–years–old, were forced to work long hours in factories because they could fit into small places
and did not demand as much pay as an adult. (History.com Staff, 2009) As time passed, the United

Sweatshops Are Morally Permissible Has Been An Eye Opening...
Introduction:
Researching whether 'sweatshops' are morally permissible has been an eye opening experience. One
has to fully understand what a sweatshop actually is before developing an opinion whether it is
morally right or wrong. The definition of a sweatshop is broad, it describes any type factory with
dangerous and unhealthy working conditions, all while low pay and long hours are notorious. After
digging deeper into this, it turns out that most if not all of the workers employed there would rather
work in these type of factories than the alternative. Understanding what actually consists of an
unhealthy work environment, and low wages are not as cut and dry as you may think. You have to
keep in mind, most of these factories are located in foreign countries where the normal everyday
conditions would be appalling to some Americans. Most people will immediately spout about their
opinion without really knowing the facts. Kathy Gifford always comes to mind when we hear
anything regarding sweatshop and child labor. Not everyone understands exactly what a Third World
daily life is consumed of. There are many misconceptions about the work environment of factories
in other countries, and just as there are pros and cons related to every place of employment, we will
dig further into the ethical and moral realities that people and sometimes children are faced with.

What is Neuroplasty?
By Brian Lynn Bentley

Neuroplasty is The ability of the brain to adapt, to create workarounds and short cuts to make up for
missing or damaged portions of the brain. It is amazing how the brain can grow new networks and
nueral connections till the day we die. Our little brain cells oe neurons compensate for or imjuries
,diseases or birth defects. OUr brain adapts for and redesigns its self to accomplish normal tasks,
Sometime by retraining but sometimes just natural. Our brain is more less plastic. So our brains are

for this example will be a stroke."A stroke provides an environment that is more permissive for
axonal sprouting where growth–promoting molecules are substantially produced. Surrounding the
infarct where there is an area of apoptotic cell death, stroke forms a glial scar that extends several

sprouting? It is part of the process of wiring in our brain. which egages the neurons to trigger the
growth programing in our brains which whill allow an elelberate "growth cone" to extend an axon or
axons to form alterntive new connections to make up for the damaged areas. and strokes cam indice

Conservation's Environmental Legacy

  • 1. Environmental Conservationism Intro: The conservation movement had the ultimate goal to utilize nature including its natural resources proficiently and effectively. In the late 19th century, the existence of the human race relied upon specific resources in their everyday life. Nonrenewable resources such as oil and coal were in high demand. The interest in demand/another word of these resources greatly increased through the years, though the resource itself did not. With the further western expansion, and the increasing population, nonrenewable resources such as oil and coal were in high demand. Although there was a sudden increase in the demand for these resources, the supply of the resource stayed constant. The practice of conservationism was a heavily contested topic during the time of Theodore Roosevelt's presidency. As the 26th President of the United States of America, Roosevelt enacted the Square Deal, which was a policy where he had complete control of corporations, the ability to protect consumers, and the need to conserve natural resources. • 5. What Is The Purpose Of Obama's Speech On Gun Violence On January 5, 2016, President Obama gave a speech at the White House announcing his executive action on gun control, which was relevant as there were numerous mass shootings that took place all over the nation. The purpose of his speech was to essentially persuade and inform the public for the need of background checks for buying guns and to urge congress to take action. The fact that Obama had people on stage with him who were affected by gun violence was an attention getter and made his speech powerful as viewers were able to see that gun violence can affect anyone. Obama continued to use Pathos in his speech as he talked about the miracle recovery of former congresswomen Gabrielle Gifford, who was shot in the head during the 2011 Tucson ... • 7. Loss Of Happiness In The Tin Flute, By Gabrielle Roy When people have a chance at being happy they throw everything they have into that opportunity because they do not want it to pass by them and live the rest of their life wondering what if. That is what Florentine was battling with in The Tin Flute. She does not know if she should follow Jean and see the movie with him or let him pass her by. Florentine is almost afraid to say no because she wants this chance at happiness. In "The Tin Flute" by Gabrielle Roy the reader should learn that people can throw everything they have into a chance at happiness because they are afraid of what may happen if they let it pass. Florentine is torn between whether or not to go with Jean Lévesque and leave her current life behind. While working at her job in a diner she is approached by a man who wants to take her out and Florentine is not sure if she should follow him or let him leave. After taking a rest from her job and thinking about her life and what she might become she decides that she "must immediately stake everything she has to offer, on one wild chance of happiness." Florentine knows that what she is thinking about doing is crazy and that most people would not follow a man they knew almost nothing about to the movies but she wants to take that chance because ... • 11. The Legacy Of President Theodore Roosevelt Of our 45 presidents, Theodore Roosevelt is not one that will be easily forgotten. During his time, his accomplishments wrought a change in the United States, and are still impacting us today, even long after his death. Among his many notable feats, many consider his conservation efforts specifically to be his legacy. He had a love and passion for nature, and he even became a permanent fixture of nature when his face was carved into a wall of rock, as one of the four presidents of Mount Rushmore. During the 1900s, "conservation" was not a word often thrown around in conversation. Today however, conflicts such as limited resources, conservation, climate change, and environment are words that have been on everyone's lips at one point or ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Before he took up any important roles such as governor or president, he still managed to make an impact on conservation. Even his hobbies were influential; his love of hunting wild animals resulted in many valuable contributions to natural history museums. Roosevelt jumped from occupation to occupation as he aged, gradually gaining positions of higher influence. One such occupation was a soldier of the Spanish–american war, and feats and bravery in the war are what led him to become governor of New York in 1898 upon his return. Now that he had higher status, Roosevelt was able to make bigger impacts upon the conservation movement. He formed the Boone and Crockett Club in the 1890's. The club was comprised mainly of hunters and conservationists. Hunters see and understand firsthand the effects of overhunting. The club worked on protecting national parks, and expanding and creating wildlife refuges and reserves, as well as raising funds for conservation. It was during this time that Theodore Roosevelt met Gifford Pinchot, who was involved in the U.S. department of agriculture and was also a member of the Boone and Crockett Club. Roosevelt liked to surround himself with likeminded men who he believed could and wanted to make a difference in terms of resource management and conservation. Teddy approved of Pinchot's dedication, and their friendship remained strong throughout Roosevelt's time as governor and president. Pinchot ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

If an observer takes an image and considers the effects each of these sites has had on their own reading of the image's meaning, the viewer's resulting analysis of the image will be more a more complete evaluation. The image of "Theodore Roosevelt and John Muir at Glacier Point, Yosemite" captures a time and place in such a way that even a century after the image's creation, students of visual studies can still use it to better understand how and where an image develops its meaning. Looking at images like this analytically would be an excellent first step when crafting a research paper. The image "Theodore Roosevelt and John Muir at Glacier Point, Yosemite" could inspire a visual studies student to delve into further research on the creation of national parks, the politics surrounding their establishment or the establishment of Yosemite specifically, or even more specific research on either Theodore Roosevelt or John Muir. Personally, this image made me more interested in understanding the use of images to market the national parks in the early twentieth century and how this has changed with the rise of new technologies in the subsequent decades. Images like "Theodore Roosevelt and John Muir at Glacier Point, Yosemite" can also be used to supplement a completed research paper. If one were to write a research paper about the establishment of the National Park System, the image "Theodore Roosevelt and John Muir at Glacier Point, Yosemite" would be a good accompaniment. Not only is it informative in its own right, but it also spurs curiosity in the viewer. Is the image part of a series of photographs of Roosevelt's travels with Muir? Did the two men like each other or were they just posing together for posterity? And for the modern environmentalist, the essential question maybe what does this landscape look like now? The answers to these questions could be answered within the text of the research paper. It is suspected that the most important images for the research paper will be those that require additional explanation for full comprehension. This marries the text and images into one cohesive ... • 15. A Human For Nature Essay A Human For Nature When looking at the issue of humans and nature throughout history, one significant figure stands out in my mind: Theodore Roosevelt. Without him, the most beautiful and serene places in North America may have been destroyed or fallen to the hands of developers. Development and conservation of land have been issues that we have faced since Europeans first landed in America. Today, environmental issues are a concern that any contending political candidate must address. In focusing on Theodore Roosevelt, we will find a basis for preservation in America. We will also explore some of the preservation actions that take place in our world today. The original forests in the United States covered an extremely large amount ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Yet for the most part, the loggers, the government, and the rest of the country still viewed the land and forests of America as endless and interminable. Fortunately, an individual came along who put future public interest above the current private interest of the nations resources: Theodore Roosevelt. Over the course of his life Roosevelt has been responsible for creating 4 Big Game Refugees, 51 National Bird Reservations, the National Forrest Service and five National Parks including Crater Lake in Oregon and the Anasazi ruins at Mesa Verde, Colorodo1. He brought many of our countries most beautiful landscapes into the light that they deserved. In doing so, these national "jewels" were recognized by the government as natural resources that require federal management for their up keep. The contributions that Roosevelt has made to our country allow him to truly be considered a human for nature. Theodore Roosevelt was born in New York City in 1858 and grew up in a wealthy family. Despite being sick due to asthma, Theodore spent most of his time outside. Theodore's childhood showed the first signs of his love for nature and animals. Conservation and Preservation at the Turn of the 19th Century Missing Works Cited The environmentalist movement of the late 19th and early 20th centuries presents a picture of America at the time: torn between the desires to expand while seeking to protect nature. Although all members of the movement sought to protect nature, there were two predominant schools as to how to go about this. In their two philosophies, they created two methods for human interaction with the wilderness. The conservationist movement can be called the utilitarian movement, and sought the greatest good for the greatest number over the longest term. In contrast, the preservationist school aimed at keeping nature in its current state, although the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This networking would serve him later in life, but first he had to receive an education in forestry, something unavailable in America. Thus he traveled to Germany to study forestry theory in Germany and England. The time spent in Europe formed the foundation of his beliefs on conservation and through him those of the conservationist movement. "Pinchot left Europe with some convictions about forestry. He had learned... that trees are a crop... Pinchot brought the gospel that forestry was the art of using a forest without destroying it... [He] preached that through the use of proper methods a forest could be both harvested and preserved." (McGeary 23) This conviction reveals the underlying theory to all of the conservation movement, that nature should be viewed in the confines of its economic value. For example, Pinchot's policy did not allow for the continuation of old growth forests, but demanded that they be cut down and let new trees to grow back in their place. "He clashed repeatedly during his career with conservationists who were basically devoted to preserving the trees." (McGeary 87) To understand where the motivation and passion to protect the environment was developed, one looks to the rapid deforestation of East Coast old–growth forests at the turn of the century. Her world came to a crash the day she was shot, point–blank, in front of a grocery store. With all of this gun violence going on recently the Senate has been flooded with gun–control legislation. Some of it is radical but the majority of the laws are no–brainers, like the background check law struck down by the senate earlier in the congressional session. The law required that background checks be given before the purchase of a firearm, and was supported by "Ninety per cent of Americans," and "eighty–five per cent of gun owners" (Talbot, 2014). Interest groups like the NRA are scaring our legislators into making decisions that do not reflect the wishes of the population as a whole. In order to prevent shootings like those in Connecticut and Colorado, a bill was passed in the House of Representatives requiring a background check before the purchase of a firearm. However, when placed in the hands of the Senate, cowardice got the best of them. Gifford writes "These senators made their decision based on political fear and on cold calculations about the money of special interest..." (Giffords, 2013). • 21. Nature : Conservation And Conservation Americans began to worry about their connection with nature when cities gained popularity and frontier closed. In the late 1800's, Americans began to take notice the land they relied on for resources was beginning to show signs of overuse (Roosevelt, Theodore). The two most prominent activists for the conservation and preservation of American soil were Gifford Pinchot and John Muir. These two men both fought for regulation on how the land was used, but disputed over what this use looked like. Pinchot believed in conservation which meant using the natural resources to serve the needs of Americans for the longest time (Warren, 201). On the other side of the movement, Muir believed that man should leave nature untouched and left in its purist form.(Muir 40) Conservation and preservation impacted not only the land but, also on the people who lived on the land. The conservation and preservation movement benefited whites of upper and middle class who were able to earn a profit, explore, and utilize the nature that was being conserved/preserved. Consequently, the conservation and preservation movements created greater hardship for those who relied on nature's resources to survive, including, but not limited to the working class of Ely, Minnesota and the Indians in Yosemite National Park. Ely, Minnesota is a prime example of how the conservation and preservation movement created a greater divide between the upper and lower classes. The elites of Ely greatly benefited from the ... Women were involved in the progressive and reform movements at the turn of the 20th century in multiple ways. One such way is by being a muckraker like Ida Tarbell was. She produced a study of the Standard Oil Trust which helped lead to industry reform. Women also had a large part in the progressive movement because of NAWSA. As the children grew up, the scientists used MRI and EEG scans to observe their brains. During the first two years of this study, they found out that the children who were learning music were maturing faster and developing much more of an auditory pathway than the others. "The enhanced maturity reflects an increase in neuroplasticity – a physiological change in the brain in response to its environment – in this case, exposure to music and music instruction" (Gersema). This fast development of the brain's neuroplasticity, and auditory pathway can accelerate certain abilities like language development, communication, and reading skills. Studies done by the Children's Music Workshop showed that music education has an effect on language development. Musical training "physically develops the part of the left side of the brain known to be involved with processing language, and can actually wire the brain's circuits in specific ways. Linking familiar songs to new information can also help imprint information on young minds" ("The Benefits of Music Education"). Like singing a list of words to a familiar tune, such as Mary Had A Little Lamb can help one remember the list of words. In a Stanford study, it was shown that musical training "helps the brain work more efficiently in distinguishing split–second differences between rapidly changing sounds that are essential to processing language" (Trei). Thornburgh is quick to dismiss gun control and gun rights advocates' reactions to the event but instead focuses solely on gunman, Jared Loughner's, mental illness. Thornburgh does not claim he is credentialed; however he diagnoses Loughner as "clearly delusional," after viewing videos on the internet attributed to the gunman (para. 4). Thornburgh further promotes his premise by claiming Loughner was suspended from college for "mental problems" (para. 4). Pima Community College Department of Public Safety records (AZ Central 2011) recording Loughner's behaviors at the college were categorized simply as suspicious activity and disturbances. The only mention of Loughner's mental health is in a disturbance report where an officer notes he told a college official that there "might be a mental health concern" (p. 31). The reports mention other assumptions made about Loughner's behavior including a note that an instructor believed Loughner "appeared to be under the influence of drugs" (p. 14), and another where an instructor comments on Loughner's "unique ideology" (p. 13). • 31. Carl Sandburg And The American Dream The American Dream is a well known concept and idea that many immigrants and Americans strived for in order to become successful. Unlike most countries where rising from rags to riches was highly uncommon and a hopeless dream, America was a place for people to work hard and achieve their dreams. Carl Sandburg was a very influential poet who came from very humble beginnings under immigrant parents who had moved to America. He believed in an ordered society where people could strive and accomplish what they chose without being influenced by the majority of the country. To achieve the American Dream, Sandburg had to travel across the States, overcome challenging experiences, such as searching for newspapers to work for, keeping a job, and dealing with the death of his daughter Madeline. His American Dream of becoming a successful poet, journalist, and goal of leaving a lasting legacy only became reality after many years of hard work and perseverance. To begin, there are not many people who can say that their childhood started with joining the army, later living on the streets, and working a variety of jobs. Due to these circumstances, Sandburg had many goals and even more ideals he wished to share to the world. As a youth, he lived a difficult life, as he quit school in 8th grade and was always busy working to help his family by delivering milk, collecting ice, laying bricks, and more, before becoming a hobo in 1897 (Barr 1). • 33. Gun Control in America Essay Gun control laws in America have been a long standing issue that is still a problem today. In America it is excessively easier to obtain a gun license than to obtain a driver's license. Americans who want to obtain a license to drive in the United States must pass a written and a driving test with a government official driving instructor. Some states require a drug and alcohol course before issuing a license to drive. The same concept should apply for obtaining a gun license. Due to guns licenses not being a test in ability like a driver's license, obtaining a gun is like being given a deadly device without having to know how to properly control it when in use, or use it properly. This is because the law has not caught up to the social ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In 1991 the government survey Women, Easterners and Democrats to see who wanted to ban handguns, the results were over 50 percent who wanted to ban hand guns. It was just a normal start to a school day. Everything was going normal until 11:19 a.m. At 11:19 a.m teenagers Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold walked in and started shooting at students. By 11:35 a.m. 12 students and a teacher were dead. 20 other students were wounded during the shooting. At 12:00 p.m the shooters turned the guns on themselves and pulled the triggers. Columbine high school was never the same again (Columbine High school shootings, 2009). After further investigation, it was found that the shooters liked to play violent games (Do Violent Video Games Contribute to Youth Violence?, 2017). This raised the question do violent video games make people violent. Violent video games make people violent because of links to mass shootings, violent behavior is rewarded by games, and no true decompression happens while playing video games. People say that playing violent video games help them relax. They say they don't get violent because it helps them relax. Studies show the 61.4% of people play violent video games to "help me relax" (Do Violent Video Games Contribute to Youth Violence?, 2017). Kennedy, politicians are recognized for their bravery on the job. These politicians spoke out against what they believed was wrong, and didn't simply conform into what their party wanted them to be. A recent politician, who has showed immense bravery, is Gabrielle Giffords. She is a democrat from Arizona, who was shot in the head in 2011. It was most likely she would die. However, miraculously Giffords pulled through, and make a remarkable recovery. I believe that Gifford's story would make an excellent chapter in Profiles in Courage. Gabrielle Dee Giffords was born and raised in Tucson Arizona on June 8, 1970. Her parents were Gloria Kay Giffords and Spencer J. Giffords. Her father was a Jewish man, and her mother practiced Christian Science, therefore she was free to choose her beliefs. However, she decided to identify as Jewish. This made her Arizona's first ever Jewish congresswoman. Giffords graduated from University High School in Tucson Arizona. Then, she went on to attend Acripps College where she received her Bachelor of Arts degree in both Sociology and Latin American History. Next, she earned her Master's degree in Regional Planning from Cornell University. Her first job was at Price Waterhouse in New York City, were she worked as an associate for regional economic development. Gabrielle experienced aphasia (a language disorder that stops communication), but she participated in music therapy for healing. She learned how to think straightforwardly by matching the lyrics of the song to the rhythm and the melody. In the right side of the brain, singing abilities occur, but on the left side people can work around the injury by dropping the melody after they sing their thoughts (Harvard). Eventually, due to this music therapy process, Gabrielle recovered and got her speech ability back. Even though music is used everyday as entertainment, it can also be used as a treatment option to help people. Music therapy has been able to help people communicate and it has recovered speech and hearing imparities. Music therapy is the use of music elements by music therapist to help restore and maintain physical, mental, spiritual, and emotional health. Music therapy opens a path of communication for people who have trouble communicating through words. Doctors should use music therapy more as a treatment in hospitals, nursing homes, and rehabilitation centers. • 49. The Biological And Psychological Trait Theory The Biological and Psychological Trait Theories are theories that are used to try and explain deviance. Biological Trait Theory stems from the Italian School of Criminology (mid–nineteenth century), head by criminologist Cesare Lombroso. Lombroso argued that criminality was a biological trait found in humans. Lombroso's idea of atavism connected an individual's appearance and their biological inclination to criminal activity. The Psychological Trait Theory focused on the mental aspects of explaining criminal activity by evaluating their intelligence, personality, and learning behavior. There are three subunits of the Psychological Trait Theory, which are the psychodynamic theory, behavioral theory, and cognitive theory. Sigmund Freud developed the psychodynamic theory with his research of the conscious, preconscious, and unconscious functions of the mind. The behavioral theory is about developing human actions through learning experiences. It explains that crime is learned from life situations. People aren't born with violent tendencies, rather it's learned from life experiences. Three sources of this behavior are family, the media, and the environment. Cognitive theory focuses on how people perceive and mentally represent the world around them and solve problems. In the case of Jared Loughner, the psychological trait theory is the most applicable. With his diagnosis of being a paranoid schizophrenic, that connects him to both the psychodynamic perspective and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The Struggle Between Economics And Ecology Right from the end of the 19th Century and the beginning of the 20th Century, there has been a fierce debate concerning how economic growth or development affects the environment or ecological setup of a country. The debate has its basis on whether it would be recommendable for a nation to concentrate on growing its economy while at the same time hurting or harming its ecological system. Naturalists like Pinchot Gifford, John Muir, Love Canal and Cuyahoga County always argued in favor of environmental preservation as opposed to concentrating all efforts towards developing the economy (Olmes 154; Miller 150–51). This paper will, therefore, discuss the struggle between economics and ecology specifically looking at particular events across the Twentieth Century. It will also attempt to explain the factors involved in the pursuit for change on the way people and the administration perceived the environmental conservation as opposed to economic growth. The Twentieth Century conservationists like John Muir and Gifford Pinchot always argued that it was important for the government of the day to strike a balance between the two conflicting goals of economic development and environmental conservation. According to Menzel (2007; 3– 4), other environmental movements in the USA had been in constant conflict with industrial enterprises. This has been an occurring issue for a while now but the recent school shooting by Adam Lanza in December of 2012, an unstable man who had access to assault weapons killed 26 people. Do you feel safe under The Second Amendment? Many people think these mass shootings could have been stopped if the government had never repealed the 1994 assault weapon ban or if we had universal background checks, keeping this ban active could have saved 26 adults and kids from their death. Not only do mass shooting occur too often but so do attacks that end in tragedy. Trayvon Martin is just one of many who was killed for being an average teen in the U.S. only his life was cut short because he decided to walk through a very unwelcoming neighborhood. Under the Second Amendment everyday citizens are not protected by the current gun control laws. Mass shootings occur often around a country that is the land of the free and seems to be safe. Universal background checks is a necessity. Too many assault weapons get into the hands of wrong people and the consequences are irreversible. One incident that happened in Connecticut is the Sandy Hook Elementary School. This is a prime example of how assualt weapons got into the hands of the wrong person. The right to own and operate guns under certain circumstances is in fact guaranteed as part of the United States Constitution. Over the course of American history and particularly in the 21st century, there exists a great debate over the possession of guns of private citizens. Both sides of the debate argue with fervor. There are those that argue fervently for the right to possess arms; they argue for guns with regard to home protection, property protection, personal security, and that it is a fundamental right as a citizen. On the other side, there are those that reference the persistence of accidental injuries and fatalities that are gun related. People on this side of the debate argue for the banishment of guns, for stricter gun control laws, and for restrictions on certain kinds of high caliber guns and ammunition. They argue for the safety of the general population and for the lack of responsibility of those in possession of guns. Some companies, such as Walmart, who order goods from foreign suppliers have gotten their feet in hot water because these suppliers did not always follow the same ethics that the United States has. Suppliers in Asia often work children 12–15 hour days in order to meet quotas and keep the cost of labor down (Lau, 2012.) In an effort to save money on raw materials and goods, some organizations, including Walmart, have purchased goods from suppliers who work children outrageously long hours. One has to fully understand what a sweatshop actually is before developing an opinion whether it is morally right or wrong. The definition of a sweatshop is broad, it describes any type factory with dangerous and unhealthy working conditions, all while low pay and long hours are notorious. After digging deeper into this, it turns out that most if not all of the workers employed there would rather work in these type of factories than the alternative. Understanding what actually consists of an unhealthy work environment, and low wages are not as cut and dry as you may think. You have to keep in mind, most of these factories are located in foreign countries where the normal everyday conditions would be appalling to some Americans. Most people will immediately spout about their opinion without really knowing the facts. Kathy Gifford always comes to mind when we hear anything regarding sweatshop and child labor.
