Tylenol Case
Tylenol Case Study Through aggressive price cuts and advertising, by 1982, Johnson & Johnson had successfully marketed the analgesic Tylenol as a
top selling product. In September of that same year, seven people in the Chicago area died from cyanide poisoning after ingesting Tylenol capsules. At
the time of the deaths, the means by which the contamination occurred was unknown. This situation created an ethical dilemma for Johnson &
Johnson and then Chief Executive Officer (CEO) James Burke. At conflict was public safety, the Johnson & Johnson image, and the bottom line. If
Johnson & Johnson were to ignore the situation and continue to market Tylenol, there was the potential for additional deaths and serious damage to the
public's perception... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Burke, and Johnson & Johnson approached the Tylenol poisonings by analysis of the cost–benefit ratio of each contemplated approach. Utilizing
justice as the foundation when reviewing the reactions by Johnson & Johnson to the Tylenol catastrophe illustrates that Johnson & Johnson acted
fairly and without prejudice. Stockholders may have perceived a lack of consideration due to the financial impact of the actions of Johnson &
Johnson in response to the Tylenol tragedy. However, given that the burden suffered by the families who lost loved ones, and the fear of society in
general was far more burdensome than the financial loss of the shareholders, justice prevailed in this case. Mr. Burke was an extremely virtuous man
who displayed unwavering integrity in the face of incredible challenges. The character and rectitude of Burke was likely the saving grace for Johnson
& Johnson during the Tylenol tragedy. Sadly, there have been recalls and admissions of criminal behavior by Johnson & Johnson since the departure of

Tylenol
In 1982, tragedy struck the Chicagoland area when several people died from taking Tylenol capsules laced with cyanide. Johnson & Johnson's
responsive recall of over 31 million bottles of Tylenol prompted a movement that made over–the–counter–medications in addition to millions of other
consumer goods tamperproof. General Robert Wood Johnson's credo– responsibility to the consumers, healthcare professionals, employees, community,
then stakeholders, proved to be a moral compass for the organization (Markel, 2014).
Johnson & Johnson 's response to crisis set a new standard in corporate responsibility and crisis management, one that companies can still learn from
today (Macdonald, 2007). The company made the ethical decision to take a $150 million write–off and a possible loss of $525 million in annual sales
by abandoning the capsules (see appendix 4). In assessing how all involved stakeholders were impacted by this decision, their shareholders' interests
were not ignored because the business decision would create value for the shareholder by creating sustainability of the organization (see appendix 3).
The decision to abandon the capsules demonstrated Johnson & Johnson's organizational priorities including customer safety, social responsibility,
innovation, and being a leader in their industry. Johnson & Johnson 's response set a new standard in corporate responsibility and crisis management,
one that companies can still learn from today.

Ethical Problems and Solutions with Tylenol and Enron
| Ethical Problems and Solutions With Tylenol and Enron | | |
Many large corporations are often are faced with ethical issues that determine the success of the company. Two of the most famous companies that
were faced with ethical dilemmas was Johnson and Johnson and Enron. One of these companies was able to deal with their ethical dilemma correctly
and it saved the company, while the other company did not properly handle its ethical issues and it resulted in the collapse of the company.
In the late 1900's Johnson and Johnson produced a pain killer called Tylenol. Tylenol was a very successful product in the US. Tylenol was
responsible for 19 percent of Johnson & Johnson's corporate profits during the first 3 quarters of 1982. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Within a year, Tylenol's market share rebounded and they were successfully able to patch up their brand image in the eyes of consumers. Scholarly
Journals was quoted saying "The Tylenol crisis is without a doubt the most exemplary case ever known in the history of crisis communications. Any
business executive, who has ever stumbled into a public relations ambush, ought to appreciate the way Johnson & Johnson responded to the
Tylenol poisonings. They have effectively demonstrated how major business has to handle a disaster."
The Tylenol murders were never catch and brought to justice. The one positive outcome of the disaster was that it led all drug makers to develop
tamper–proof seals for their products, this was something that was virtually nonexistent before the Tylenol crisis. To further show how well Johnson
& Johnson recovered from their lose; In 1982, Johnson & Johnson's stock, had been trading near a 52–week high just before the tragedy, after
the tragedy the stock went into a selling frenzy but it manages to recover to its high selling points only two months later. Investors have had little to
complain. If you had invested $1,000 in Johnson & Johnson shares on September 28, 1982, just before the first Tylenol episode, you would have
$22,062 today, after four stock splits.
Enron was an American energy, commodities, and Services Company based in Houston, Texas. Before the 21st century began Enron employed over

Johnson & Johnson and the Worldwide Recall of Tylenol A worldwide company that has grown significantly over time, Johnson & Johnson is a
well–known manufacturer of pharmaceuticals, surgical instruments, and Tylenol tablets, along with other products. J&J is all about innovation and
they simply believe in bringing ideas, products and services to advance the health and well–being of people around the world (About Johnson &
Johnson). The well–established and successful company that has been operating for over a staggering 130 years, has over 125,000 employees in 60
countries that are very much unified and goal–oriented. Every business has a mission that encircles profit making, but J&J is one of the very few that
focuses more on corporate duties rather than financial gains. Moreover, the essence of this case is that there was a worldwide recall of Tylenol 34 of
years ago. There was this individual from Chicago, Illinois, who put tablets that contain arsenic in unsold bottles of Tylenol on store shelves (Hosmer,
2011). No one knew the reason why that person did that; those contaminated tablets killed six people. After these... Show more content on

There should be greater freedom of choices, as this not only fosters social productivity, but it ensures market exchange among businesses and
consumers. In this Johnson and Johnson case, the Chief Executive Officer made sure that the customers exercised their freedom of choice in returning
the Tylenol products while getting their refund for unopened tablets.
The company acknowledged the two–way idea that everyone should act to ensure greater freedom for society. The idea in this case is where the
company acted promptly and called back all Tylenol products, both nationally and internationally. The other part to this two–way idea is where the
company went as far to take on over a $100 million loss and refunded their customers.

Tylenol Scandal
In the fall of 1982, Johnson & Johnson received a call from a reporter asking for a comment on the deaths in the Chicago area linked to Tylenol Extra
Strength Capsules. This was the first the company had heard anything about the deaths being linked to their medicine. This wasn't surprising given in
1982, prior to the explosion of the internet; often the media was aware of information prior to the public. Very different from today where we all have
access to information at our fingertips. Immediately discovering the news there were countless articles and TV releases of statements claiming Tylenol
was the purpose for the deaths in Chicago.
James Burke quickly assembled a seven–person team and informed them that their top priority was "how to ensure safety" and once that was taken
care of then "how to save the Tylenol brand". This crisis was the first time Johnson & Johnson started to proactively engage the media and help write
the story of what was actually occurring. Johnson & Johnson chose to recall all Tylenol products nationally, stopped production and media and issued
statements broadly to warn the country of the immediate dangers. The issue was identified as product tampering after the product had shipped to the
retailers. The Tylenol capsules had been laced with significant amounts of... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This lives into the organization's Credo, or mission statement. To do this Johnson & Johnson had to make the public aware by engaging the media

had been recalled with Tylenol tablets free of charge. Accepting social responsibility was one of the main reasons Johnson & Johnson was praised for

Tylenol Murders Essay
Crisis communication is an area of public relations that I find really fascinating. I enjoy learning about the proper steps that a professional takes
when a company is pitted against a major crisis, and what they do in the face of chaos to turn the situation around and use the crisis in their own
favor. One case study that exemplifies the degree to which a crisis can be managed effectively and a company can gain more respect by doing so is the
case of the Chicago Tylenol Murdersin 1982. The tragic deaths of seven people who died due to potassium cyanide–laced Tylenol capsules started as a
disaster for Tylenol producer Johnson and Johnson. However, J&J communicated with their publics and the media proficiently, investigated their...

Unsuccessful attempts were made to save them, but both died within a few days (Rowe.)
While it was suspected that these deaths were suspiciously connected in some way, it was questionable as to how they were connected. However, it
was noticed by two firefighters monitoring calls that both families had announced that the victims had ingested Tylenol prior to collapsing. The
firefighters, Phillip Cappitelli and Richard Keyworth "call[ed] the coroner who confirms capsules of Tylenol obtained from both victim homes and
finds 65 milligrams of cyanide in some of them" (Rowe.)
When J&J realized that their Tylenol capsules caused the deaths of four Chicagoans, they immediately initiated a recall of all Tylenol products, and
spread the news by any means possible. Cars with sirens and loudspeakers drove through the city and suburbs of Chicago, urging residents to throw
away any Tylenol capsules they might have. Schools were contacted, and they instructed students to bring all Tylenol products to the school nurse.
News flashes were initiated to warn people of the Tylenol danger as well, and all stores were instructed to remove Tylenol products from their shelves.
Removing the products was a gutsy move, not only because it was dangerous to the company by recalling so much products, but there was also a fear
that the killer

It all started on the morning of September 29, 1982. A 12 year old girl by the name of Mary Kellermen from Elk Grove Village, Chicago took some
an extra strength Tylenol capsule to cure a sore throat and a runny nose. By 7 o'clock the next morning, Mary was dead. That same day a 27 year old
postal worker by the name of Adam Janus from Arlington Heights, Illinois, was said to have died of from a massive heart attack. Janus' brother and
sister–in–law, Stanley and Theresa, rushed to his home to grieve amongst their loved ones. After a while, his brother and sister–in–law both

methods that would soon become the standard for all over the counter medications. These included foil seals and other features that helped make it
obvious to consumers if their medications have been altered in any way. Johnson and Johnson also intoduced the "caplet" – a tablet coated with slick,
easy–to–swallow gelatin but far harder to tamper with than the older capsules which could be easily opened, laced with a contaminant, and then placed
back in the older non–tamper–proof bottle (. In 1983, the U.S. Congress passed "the Tylenol bill," making it a federal offense to tamper with consumer
products and in 1989, the FDA established federal guidelines for manufacturers to make all such products

to include:
Description of the crisis.
Description of the amount of damage.
Description of the victims (physical and psychological damage).
Information about the perpetrator(s).

Arlington Heights firefighter Philip Cappitelli talked with his friend Richard Keyworth from the Elk Grove firehouse about Mary Kellerman and the
fact that she had taken Tylenol before she died. Keyworth suggested that all the deaths could have been related to the medicine.
Following his friends suggestion, Cappitelli called the paramedics who worked on the Janus family and asked if they too had taken Tylenol. To both
the men's surprise, they discovered all three Janus family members had ingested the popular pain reliever. The police were immediately sent to the
Kellerman and Janus homes to retrieve the suspicious bottles. Investigators soon discovered the Tylenol link. Urgent warnings were broadcast, and
police drove through Chicago neighborhoods issuing warnings over loudspeakers.
During the initial investigations, a man named James William Lewis sent a letter to Johnson & Johnson demanding $1 million to stop the
cyanide–induced murders. Police were unable to link him with the crimes, as he and his wife were living in New York City at the time. He was
convicted of extortion, served 13 years of a 20–year sentence, and was released in 1995 on parole. WCVB Channel 5 of Boston reported that court
documents, released in early 2009, "show Department of Justice investigators concluded Lewis was responsible for the poisonings, despite the fact that
they did not have enough evidence to charge him." Lewis has denied responsibility for the poisonings for several years.

Why Is Tylenol The Culprit?
For several years now, researchers have blamed common analgesics (pain relievers) and antipyretics (fever reducers), mainly acetaminophen (Tylenol)
and ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin), as potential causes of asthma symptoms and new–onset asthma. However, more recent evidence seems to vindicate pain
medicine. Here's 5 things to know. Tylenol becomes the leading pain medicine. In 1980, Aspirin was linked with Reye's Syndrome. This was also the
same year that Tylenol was marketed as the pain reliever hospitals choose first. This quickly turned out to be a huge boon for the makers of Tylenol,
whose sales skyrocketed over the ensuing years. Later in the decade ibuprofen became available as an alternative over the counter pain medicine and
fever... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Study after study continued to confirm suspicions that common pain relievers were guilty. (3–4) Most studies only involve Tylenol. Keep in mind, that
since acetaminophen is the most commonly used pain reliever and fever reducer, it's the one most often used in studies. It is generally considered a
weaker pain reliever to ibuprofen, although it is more widely used because it's better tolerated than Aspirin and ibuprofen, which have both been shown
to irritate the stomach. (3) Tylenol seems to lower glutathione levels. A theory arose that taking Tylenol reduces glutathione. It's a protein produced by
many cells in your body, but it's also an antioxidant that prevents free radicals from causing oxidative stress, which can cause damage to cells, such as
cells lining airways. Various studies have linked this with both asthma symptoms and new–onset asthma. Tylenol mostly affects glutathione levels in
the liver, although it has also been shown to lower glutathione levels in the lungs. However, there are also other things that might lower glutathione.
(4–6) The suspicions inspired concerns. Parents and physicians alike often wondered if they should even recommend these common pain relievers and
fever reducers for children. Despite the link, the makers of Tylenol continued to insist their product was safe for adults and children of all ages. Many
researchers continued to agree with the makers of Tylenol, noting that the link may simply be a

before the company's profit and recalled all of the pills. In the St. Petersburg Times, James E. Burke the chairman of Johnson and Johnson at the time
said that the company will replace all Tylenol capsules without requiring customers to show a proof of purchase. They also made new packages that
were marked saying "new safety sealed."
On the box a warning was printed saying "Do not use if safety seals are broken." The company did the right thing when handling the situation. The
seals that were printed I think was a good idea because now any customer would be able to tell if the product was tampered with. Also I think that
would make a customer feel more secure when purchasing the product. After such a horrible crisis Tylenol began to build its brand back up. After
removing the product off the shelves they had to re–introduce the product. They put out promotions offering
$2.50 off their next purchase. Johnson & Johnson came up with a new pricing program which gave consumers up to 25% off. They also had over 2250

The Tylenol Crisis of 1982
Since 1887 Johnson and Johnson had been a respected member of the health care industry providing millions of customers with a diverse line of
products from surgical dressings and band aids to baby powder. It had built its reputation on providing surgeons with sterile dressing to use after
surgery because infection was a major cause of death after surgical procedures. The company was also a pioneer in the corporate idea of

A week after the poisonings, Tylenol's market share fell from 34 percent to 4 percent (Marketing Fact Book, n.d., as cited in Raeburn, 1982). Sales were
sharply declining. Although the company had emergency plans for incidents such as plant fires, Johnson and Johnson had no specific crisis
communication plan. Nothing like this had ever happened to Johnson and Johnson or any other company. Johnson and Johnson would need to react
quickly in order to preserve the company's reputation and maintain Tylenol's market share. This paper will show how Johnson and Johnson responded
to the tampering crisis and what other companies can learn from their actions. The public relations decisions made as a result of the Tylenol crisis
arrived in two phases. The first phase was the actual handling of the crisis. Once it was determined that the seven deaths in the Chicago area were
caused by Extra Strength Tylenol capsules, Johnson & Johnson used both public relations and advertising to communicate their strategy to their
customers and the medical community. Rather than waiting for more evidence of contamination, Johnson and Johnson immediately sought to remove
all causes of potential harm to its number one priority – the users of their products (Baker, n.d.). Johnson and Johnson's CEO, James Burke, remained
in constant contact with the public through the channels of the news media. Johnson and Johnson executives appeared on television shows "60

Tylenol
The background
In 1982, Johnson & Johnson (J&J) faced a major crisis that had the potential to send the company into financial ruin. Tylenol, the country's most
successful over–the–counter product, with over one hundred million users, was under attack.
The crisis
Sealed bottles were tampered with and extra–strength Tylenol capsules were replaced with cyanide–laced capsules. These bottles were then resealed and
placed on shelves of pharmacies in the Chicago area. Seven people died as a result. Tylenol was called upon to explain why its product was killing
people.

Before the scandal, Tylenol had captured over one–third of the painkiller market, was the most successful over–the–counter product in the United States
and was one of Johnson & Johnson's top income earning products. Although investigation proved that the poisoning was the result of external sabotage
instead of internal causes the public perception was that the drug was no longer safe for use and the problem the company faced was restoring the
public confidence in the product. Compounding the matter was the fact that, in the beginning, the product tampered, and initial media reports focused
that the product was responsible for death. When investigations revealed that the cause of the poisonings was external sabotage and even when that
information became public knowledge, the situation proved to be a public relations nightmare. However, officials of Johnson & Johnson rose to the
occasion and were able to correct the corporate image and the public once more accept the product. The handling of this crisis by the company resulted
in the company acclaimed for its positive results. They became pioneers in the area of tamper–resistant packaging, introduced the use of caplets instead

The Negative Analysis Of Johnson And Johnson's Tylenol
Although crises situations happen, all situations are not doomed to failure. For instance, prior to its crisis, Johnson & Johnson's Tylenol was the most
successful over–the–counter product in America (Harris, Hart, Hubbard, Jurgensen, & Wells, n.d.). An absolute leader in painkiller, Tylenol accounted
for a 37 percent market share, outselling its competitors (Harris et al, n.d.). During the fall of 1982, a malevolent person or persons, presumably
unknown, replaced Tylenol Extra–Strength capsules with an altered version of the medication (Harris et al, n.d.) Unbeknownst to the corporation, this
unknown person(s) replaced the capsules with cyanide–laced capsules, resealed the packages, and deposited them onto the shelves of a least a
half–dozen food stores within the Chicago area (Harris et at, n.d.). As a result, several unexpecting people died a horrible death (Harris et al, n.d.).
Without any warning, Johnson & Johnson, a parent company of McNeil Consumer Products Company, endured negative media coverage that included
information about the crisis before the organization knew about it. In addition, the company had to explain to the world, why its trusted product was
suddenly killing people (Harris et al, n.d.). Initially, the company was blindsided by the incident and subsequently formed a seven–member strategy
team to handle the crisis, protect consumers, save their product, and confront the negative media coverage (Harris et al, n.d.).
Almost immediately, the company alerted consumers across the nation not to consume their product (Harris et al, n.d.). In addition, consumers were
directed not to resume consumption until the extent of the tampering could be determined (Harris et al, n.d.). Moreover, Johnson & Johnson stopped
production and advertisement and withdrew all Tylenol bottles from the store shelves in Chicago and the surrounding areas (Harris et al, n.d.).
Following the discovery of two more contaminated bottles, Tylenol realized the vulnerability of their product and ordered that every capsule is
withdrawn (Harris et al, n.d.).
Not willing to take additional risks, the company utilized the media, both PR and paid to advertise, to communicate their strategy during this

Analysis Of Ethical Decision And Scandal
Analysis of ethical reaction to scandal Introduction The reputation of an organization is crucial. Therefore, being a leader of an organization has to
be able to react efficiently and effectively when there is a threat to organization's reputation. Occasionally, a leader has to face a dilemma, whereby
one has to decide how to deal with the scandals in the organizations. On one hand, some organizations treat their customers as a mean to gather the
profits. On the other hand, other organizations regard their customers as an end, whereby the organizations really consider about customers' interests
as an ultimate goal of their services. Nonetheless, only the companies that mad the ethical actions survived. Lacking a focus on the welfare of their
customers, some propaganda techniques, aiming to cover up the scandals, usually don't work well. Instead, successful public relationship
management techniques generally treat their customers' welfare as an end not just a mean. For example, a successful crisis management usually
contains the honesty and quick reaction. Enron Corporation is a great example to illustrate how damaging it is if company leaders try to hide up the
scandals and lie to the public. From Kant's perspective, customers, who are human beings objected to the service provided by organizations, should
be treated with dignity, as "every rational being exists as an end in himself and not merely as a means to be arbitrarily used by this or that will" (Kant

The Tragedy Of Tylenol Murders
The recall and re–launch cost Johnson & Johnson around $100 million, but in the end, Johnson & Johnson was praised for its handling of the crisis.
The Tylenol murders, which moved copycat crimes involving distinctive products, were never solved, although various individuals were investigated.
However, a positive coincidence of the circumstance was entire led drug makers to develop tamper–proof packaging, which had been notably

1982 Tylenol Crisis
The leadership at Johnsons & Johnson during the 1982 Tylenol Crisis used tasked–oriented leadership to swiftly resolved the crisis. Task–oriented
leader behaviors involve structuring the roles of subordinates, providing them with instructions, and behaving in ways that will increase the
performance. Task–oriented behaviors are directives given to employees to get things done and to ensure that organizational goals are met (UMUC).
Two steps were followed at Johnson & Johnson to ensure that organizational goal of resolving the crisis was met. First the organizations' leadership
needed to be proactive during the crisis. Then, leadership needed to make authoritarian decisions about Tylenol. During the 1982 Tylenol crisis,
organization's task–orientated goal was for leadership at Johnson & Johnson to resolve the Tylenol crisis.

What Happens When Great Innovation And Corporate...
What happens when great innovation and corporate responsibility come together? Johnson and Johnson happens. J&J has been a benchmark for both
innovation and customer relations their entire history, which has been a long one. From the original Band–Aid, to Tylenol, to the famous Johnson's
Baby Shampoo, J&J has created numerous highly successful brands. They control over 275 subsidiaries in over 60 countries giving them a huge
global presence. By examining its history, ethical investigations, and organizational analysis, I will paint a clear picture for which J&J stands.
J&J is best summed up by the words in their credo. To be concise, I will summarize the credo instead of stating it in its entirety. They rank their
responsibilities by the importance they place on them. These responsibilities are as follows: customers first, employees second, the community third,
and stockholders fourth. These aren't pure rankings but rather the order in which they consider the results of their actions. This approach has been
instrumental in creating the customer revered company J&J is today.
J&J hasn't always been a powerhouse. Its humble beginnings began in Brunswick, New Jersey in the year 1886. The founders were the Johnson
brothers, Robert, James, and Edward Johnson. Their focus hasn't changed much from its founding principles. They began by selling first aid kits to
railroad workers and health products to families. In 1888, they came out with the first commercial First Aid Kit,

The Effects Of Tylenol Products On The Economy
According to Lewis (2006), crisis is "an interruption from previously normal state of functioning resulting in turmoil, instability, and a significant
upheaval to a system" (p. 27). In other words, a crisis is a negative predictable or unpredictable event that affects the future trend of individuals, groups,
organizations, and government. For instance, pharmaceutical company Johnson and Johnson had an unpredictable crisis in 1982 with its product
Tylenol, which was laced with cyanide and led to several murders in Chicago. The events of this crisis could have changed the perception of Tylenol
products. Another example of organizational crisis was the predictable 2012 Hurricane Sandy. Although companies of all sizes expected the Hurricane
due to the weather forecasting, some areas in New York and New Jersey were affected worse than others. There were businesses that terminated
operations for several business days. In addition to Hurricane Sandy being an organizational crisis, it was also a crisis for many families that lost
power in their homes and a crisis for government departments such as FEMA (Federal Emergency Management Agency), and other agencies within
local and state governments.
Anxiety (or stress) should not be mistaken for a crisis. For instance, a parent being late picking–up his/her child from a daycare is not a crisis, it is
anxiety that is sometimes manifested with a fast heartbeat, extreme sweating, etc. On the other hand, the 2012 Sandy Hook shooting

James Burke who was ECO of Johnson & Johnson during the Tylenol tempering period in 1982. The crisis happened when some Tylenol capsules were
adulterated with poison that caused deaths (Washington Post). During this crisis, he showed good examples of not only good management decision but
ethical leadership as well.
One of the ethical traits that clearly stands out is that James Burke has a strong personal character. At a point in the crisis, in spite of the US
government's advice against the product recall, he still decided to do what he thought was the right thing to protect consumers.
He was proactive in response to the crisis –– unlike other cases such as Toyota's car brake and Intel's Pentium chip division issues where leaders were

A company built on a foundation of trust crumbled beneath them the fall of 1982. After the seventh death was linked to the product Tylenol, Johnson
and Johnson took immediate action. Johnson and Johnson worked closely with the media, the FBI, the Chicago Police Department, as well as the
Federal Food and Drug Administration to get to the bottom of the poisonings. It was discovered that an external being tampered with the bottles of
Tylenol. The perpetrator was never caught. Unlike many companies in a time of crisis, Johnson and Johnson thought of their consumers before their
profits and financial concerns (Kaplan). Johnson and Johnson made the choice to assume responsibility for the safety of their consumers, even though
they were not responsible for the poisoning of its product. No one forced them to take responsibility, but they genuinely had concern for their
consumer's safety. Johnson and Johnson took it to a level no company ever had before. They recalled 31 million bottles, which has a retail price of
over $100 million. The FBI and FDA advised against this recall, but Johnson and Johnson felt it was the only way to protect their consumers until the
investigation was complete (Mitroff and Anagnos). Johnson and Johnson also offered to exchange all Tylenol capsules, whether they were
contaminated or not (Kaplan). Lastly, they made the decision to introduce new tamper–proof packaging, as well as a caplet. A caplet is a tablet coated

Tylenol Murders Research Paper
The Tylenol Murder Nowadays, whenever someone has a headache, their motive is to look for a way to ease it and that may be taking medication
such as Tylenol. However, in 1982 the deaths of several victims were caused by the use of Tylenol poisoned with cyanide by a lurking killer. All of
these deaths occurred in Chicago. Today,Tylenol is widely used and trustworthy; however, in 1982, that was the most feared product. Two theories that
hint possible ways of the poisoning was that Tylenol was either tampered with at the store or poisoned at the plant, but one thing that remains unsure is
who the murderer was. The death of several victims caused by cyanide–laced Tylenol left investigators and theorists stumped for years on who could ...

She was then treated with an Extra– Strength Tylenol capsule, but it wasn't discovered until next morning that she was laying on the bathroom floor

also victims of the lurking Tylenol killer. Stanley had just returned home after visiting his other brother, Adam Janus who is in critical condition, at
the hospital. He and Theresa, Adam's wife, took Tylenol to relieve stress. Ironically, their stress relieving medication was the cause of their
unfortunate death ("Tylenol Kills Six"). There were other reported cases of death from tylenol; however, none of those cases gave a single hint to
who the mysterious killer might be.One theory of how the murder killed subtly is that the Tylenol was poisoned with cyanide directly at the store.
After the deaths of several victims, investigators traced their way back to the stores where Tylenol was sold. They discovered "one additional tainted
bottle of Extra–Strength Tylenol" out of the five stores they examined (Newton "The Tylenol Murders" 370).

Towards the end of September of 1982, seven people died from a Tylenol product tampering on Chicago's West Side. Before the events, Tylenol had

McNeil Consumer Products Company which makes Tylenol, had to face the world and explain why their highly–trusted product was killing its
consumers. (Markel, 2014)
The first announced victim was 12–year–old Mary Kellerman. The girl had cold symptoms in the middle of the night, so her parent gave her

At first, when the tampering was not known, media focused on the sensationalistic fact that Tylenol was killing people producing a negative image for
the brand. But once the real cause was known, Tylenol was seen as a victim of the circumstances.
Before the crisis, Johnson & Johnson was not actively involved with press coverage, but when the event occurred they appreciated the profits of media
communication in order to reach out to their consumers faster and more efficiently. Several major press conferences had place at the company's
headquarters. During the course of the events, over 100,000 news stories ran in U. S. newspapers. A post–crisis study done by the own Johnson &
Johnson company revealed that over 90 percent of the country population knew about the Tylenol deaths within the first week. (Harris, et al., n.d.).
Experts were predicting an obscure future for the product. Advertising specialist Jerry Della Femina stated that he was almost sure that a product
under that name could never be sold again. Femina was far from being right, since Tylenol took short time period to be back in the market, and is still
nowadays one of the selling leader of over the counter drugs in the U.S. (Kaplan,

Case Analysis : Johnson & Johnson
During 2009 and 2010, Johnson & Johnson subsidiary McNeil Consumer Healthcare recalled tens of thousands of children's medicine products,
including the well–known brands Tylenol and Motrin (Haynes, 2015). The recall was done in response to complaints of particles in the liquid
medicines produced by the Fort Washington, PA, facility. McNeil claimed these particles were small metal pieces, which did not pose any safety risks
to consumers (Haynes, 2015). The public was unsettled by this revelation of Johnson & Johnson releasing defective products onto the market. After
news of the recall, FDA investigators found that the plant had violated the federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act by not producing according to best
industry practices (Haynes, 2015). Additional controversy was created when congressional investigations revealed that private contractors were hired to
quietly buy back defective products without the public's knowledge in a "phantom recall" (Olaniran, Scholl, Williams, Boyer, 2012). Johnson &
Johnson ineffectively used crisis communication in the following ways: first, the company was slow to respond to complaints of issues with products
and perform the official recall, which led the public to lose trust in the organization; second, it performed a "phantom recall" of defective products
without the public's knowledge, showing it was not willing to be transparent about the situation; third, CEO Bill Weldon avoided commenting on the

1. In the articles "Crisis at Chipotle" and "How to Handle a Crisis" both by Kristin Lewis and Adee Braun. They introduce the horrific story of food
poisoning taken place at chipotle. Is these two articles it also shows how businesses should respond in a crisis successfully. The solution it presents is
take immediate action to the public. Back in 1982 the well known medicine Tylenol was poisoned. The owners of the company took immediate action to
the public telling about the dangers about the tylenol. "Johnson & Johnson issued a national alert warning the public. With in a few days, it had set up

Also in the two articles it shows how advertising in media can hurt a company in a crisis and in ways it can help. One way it can help is the aftermath
of the crisis. After the crisis chipotle took to the website stating that there will be food safety measures. "Chipotle has continued to make improvements
to is food– safety measures, which are clearly outlined on its website."(Lewis & Braun 13) With chipotle stating that they are improving on there
food safety measures it shows to people when they see it that they are trying to make there food safe. Which makes people trust them making them
eat there again. One way it can hurt the company is people comments and horrific stories about their time at chipotle. When people say there
unpleasant stories it makes people not want to eat there. "As outraged diners took to twitter and facebook with horror stories about dirty restaurants
and cases of burrito induced diarrhea,"( Lewis & Braun 12) When people comment these things it drives people to not eat there. So with the crisis

Tylenol Persuasive Essay
Acetaminophen, commonly known as Tylenol, is perhaps the most frequently used painkiller in the United States and Europe. Obtaining Tylenol is as
simple as driving to the local grocery store. However, there is a hidden danger overlooked by citizens who frequently consume painkillers such as
Tylenol: liver failure. "The active ingredient in Tylenol, acetaminophen, accounts for more than 100,000 calls to poison centers, roughly 60,000
emergency–room visits and hundreds of deaths each year in the United States. In England, it is the leading cause of liver failure requiring transplants"
(Citation 1). The outrageous number of medical complications Tylenol is causing is due to how readily available the drug is and how people are
taking more than the recommended dose regularly. Liver damage can be reduced due to acetaminophen by making Tylenol prescription–only or by
limiting the number of pills per package, thereby decreasing the availability of the pain–killer. First, due to the number of doses of... Show more content

The drug is so popular that Americans bought 28 billion doses of Tylenol in 2005 (Citation 1). Tylenol should be sold in smaller dose containers,
reducing the amount bought at a time. Wholesale clubs should not be allowed to sell acetaminophen in 500 pill bottles, thus giving more of an
opportunity for consumers to abuse the drug. Selling Tylenol in small dose containers and limiting how many may be purchased at a time will reduce
the amount of pills in the household, therefore, becoming an inconvenience to have to go purchase more. Maybe then people will use Tylenol
sparingly to avoid the headache of going to the store for more due to using too much at once. Just by simply reducing the amount of pills available to
the consumer, liver damage caused by abuse of Tylenol will

This happened on two occasions, the first in 1982 and the second in 1986. These episodes could have been devastating to the McNeil company by
drastic decrease in consumption of the Tylenol products. The McNeil company rallied to the situation to counter this possible decrease in consumption.
According to "Laurels: The National Business Hall of Fame", Tylenol's share in the one billion dollar analgesic market commanded thirty–five percent
of the market before the 1982 incident. At the time of these episodes, consumer trust was damaged and market share decreased to seven percent. By
February 1983, Tylenol had regained a twenty–four percent share of the market(Diary of an Amazing Comeback). In the 1990's, Tylenol again reached
its thirty–five percent of the market which at this time accounted for a two billion dollar market(Laurels: The National Business Hall of Fame,

The Tylenol Crisis
Although Johnson and Johnson was a big company at the time of the Tylenol crisis, the company has never faced a complicated problem as the one that
Tylenol was affronting at the time. In addition, there were no evidences or records of any other similar problem, neither in the pharmaceutical industry
nor in the food industry. The lack of background on that kind of situation represented at the time a big challenge for the company.
Tylenol was one of the most spectacular success stories in the pharmaceutical industry, because in about 6 year period, the product increased revenue
from $50 million in 1975 to more than $350 million in 1981. In 1960 the company promoted Tylenol among doctors and pharmacists as an alternative

Introduction
In January 1886 a renowned family business, Johnson & Johnson was founded in New Brunswick, New Jersey, by Robert Wood Johnson along with
his brothers James Wood Johnson and Edward Mead Johnson. These three recognized physicians were inspired at the time by Joseph Lister, who was a
pioneer of antiseptic surgery, seized the opportunity and started the company. This Company was established at a time when sterile surgical practices
were deficient in the medical field. The success of their medical products, including sterile sutures and dressing materials, allowed the young company
to grow rapidly. Thus, Johnson and Johnson today emerged from a small company that made surgical dressings into a multinational pharmaceutical

Tylenol Pill Case
How many of you have taken a tylenol pill. What if you died days after taking them, what about hours, minutes, seconds. This is what happened in
Chicago 1982 after someone got tylenol pills and poisoned them with 100 to 10000 times the fatal dose. Seven people were killed and more poisoned
bottles were found after this. One family and other individuals were found dead because of this. In total it ended up being seven dead. No one was
ever convicted for the murders, but three people were suspects in the investigation.
The first suspect was James W. Lewis. He was a con–artist and his handwriting was found to match the two letters to the white house as treats. The
first letter sent was threatening the white house to continue the poisonings and the second was also threatening the white house that he was going to
bomb it. The only problem about this suspect was that he was in New York for about 27 days before the murders. This is a problem because the
cyanide which was the poison used would have eaten throughout the capsules. The poison would have been needed to be planted up to a day before
the murders. Some people think he got a ticket from New York to Chicago then got a taxi planted the fake pills in the bottles then got another ticket and

Tylenol, an over the counter prescription product from Johnson & Johnson, was one of the top brands in the analgesic market. Within the company, it
was also a large income earner that commanded nearly 15% of the company's total profits. That being the case, the 1982 crisis was not only a big
blow to the brand, but also to the company as a whole. The crisis jeopardized the company's existence; putting at risk a multi million investment which
the investors had a lot of faith in. Irrespective of whether the crisis was due to malicious acts from ill motivated criminals or not, the company had to

Johnson & Johnson and more so to the CEO, James Burke, who faced the toughest test of his managerial career during this time. Though the crisis was
amicably solved, there were some legal issues that were imminent and some valuable lessons learnt from the episode.
Legal Issues Surrounding 1982 Tylenol Scandal
In both developed and underdeveloped economies, there is a need to put regulations which ensure that profits are not abnormally earned at the expense
of the innocent clients. It is therefore the mandate of the territorial authorities to put in place measures that introduce checks and balances in all trades.
The respective companies or business must also follow the same suit lest they find themselves in the crossroads of law. However,

  • 1. Tylenol Case Tylenol Case Study Through aggressive price cuts and advertising, by 1982, Johnson & Johnson had successfully marketed the analgesic Tylenol as a top selling product. In September of that same year, seven people in the Chicago area died from cyanide poisoning after ingesting Tylenol capsules. At the time of the deaths, the means by which the contamination occurred was unknown. This situation created an ethical dilemma for Johnson & Johnson and then Chief Executive Officer (CEO) James Burke. At conflict was public safety, the Johnson & Johnson image, and the bottom line. If Johnson & Johnson were to ignore the situation and continue to market Tylenol, there was the potential for additional deaths and serious damage to the public's perception... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Burke, and Johnson & Johnson approached the Tylenol poisonings by analysis of the cost–benefit ratio of each contemplated approach. Utilizing justice as the foundation when reviewing the reactions by Johnson & Johnson to the Tylenol catastrophe illustrates that Johnson & Johnson acted fairly and without prejudice. Stockholders may have perceived a lack of consideration due to the financial impact of the actions of Johnson & Johnson in response to the Tylenol tragedy. However, given that the burden suffered by the families who lost loved ones, and the fear of society in general was far more burdensome than the financial loss of the shareholders, justice prevailed in this case. Mr. Burke was an extremely virtuous man who displayed unwavering integrity in the face of incredible challenges. The character and rectitude of Burke was likely the saving grace for Johnson & Johnson during the Tylenol tragedy. Sadly, there have been recalls and admissions of criminal behavior by Johnson & Johnson since the departure of Burke (TreviГ±o & Nelson, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 2. Case Analysis : ' Tylenol ' Tylenol In 1982, tragedy struck the Chicagoland area when several people died from taking Tylenol capsules laced with cyanide. Johnson & Johnson's responsive recall of over 31 million bottles of Tylenol prompted a movement that made over–the–counter–medications in addition to millions of other consumer goods tamperproof. General Robert Wood Johnson's credo– responsibility to the consumers, healthcare professionals, employees, community, then stakeholders, proved to be a moral compass for the organization (Markel, 2014). Johnson & Johnson 's response to crisis set a new standard in corporate responsibility and crisis management, one that companies can still learn from today (Macdonald, 2007). The company made the ethical decision to take a $150 million write–off and a possible loss of $525 million in annual sales by abandoning the capsules (see appendix 4). In assessing how all involved stakeholders were impacted by this decision, their shareholders' interests were not ignored because the business decision would create value for the shareholder by creating sustainability of the organization (see appendix 3). The decision to abandon the capsules demonstrated Johnson & Johnson's organizational priorities including customer safety, social responsibility, innovation, and being a leader in their industry. Johnson & Johnson 's response set a new standard in corporate responsibility and crisis management, one that companies can still learn from today. If customer safety was ... Ethical Problems and Solutions with Tylenol and Enron | Ethical Problems and Solutions With Tylenol and Enron | | | Many large corporations are often are faced with ethical issues that determine the success of the company. Two of the most famous companies that were faced with ethical dilemmas was Johnson and Johnson and Enron. One of these companies was able to deal with their ethical dilemma correctly and it saved the company, while the other company did not properly handle its ethical issues and it resulted in the collapse of the company. In the late 1900's Johnson and Johnson produced a pain killer called Tylenol. Tylenol was a very successful product in the US. Tylenol was responsible for 19 percent of Johnson & Johnson's corporate profits during the first 3 quarters of 1982. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Within a year, Tylenol's market share rebounded and they were successfully able to patch up their brand image in the eyes of consumers. Scholarly Journals was quoted saying "The Tylenol crisis is without a doubt the most exemplary case ever known in the history of crisis communications. Any business executive, who has ever stumbled into a public relations ambush, ought to appreciate the way Johnson & Johnson responded to the Tylenol poisonings. They have effectively demonstrated how major business has to handle a disaster." The Tylenol murders were never catch and brought to justice. The one positive outcome of the disaster was that it led all drug makers to develop tamper–proof seals for their products, this was something that was virtually nonexistent before the Tylenol crisis. To further show how well Johnson & Johnson recovered from their lose; In 1982, Johnson & Johnson's stock, had been trading near a 52–week high just before the tragedy, after the tragedy the stock went into a selling frenzy but it manages to recover to its high selling points only two months later. Investors have had little to complain. If you had invested $1,000 in Johnson & Johnson shares on September 28, 1982, just before the first Tylenol episode, you would have $22,062 today, after four stock splits. • 4. Tyranol & Johnson Johnson & Johnson and the Worldwide Recall of Tylenol A worldwide company that has grown significantly over time, Johnson & Johnson is a well–known manufacturer of pharmaceuticals, surgical instruments, and Tylenol tablets, along with other products. J&J is all about innovation and they simply believe in bringing ideas, products and services to advance the health and well–being of people around the world (About Johnson & Johnson). The well–established and successful company that has been operating for over a staggering 130 years, has over 125,000 employees in 60 countries that are very much unified and goal–oriented. Every business has a mission that encircles profit making, but J&J is one of the very few that focuses more on corporate duties rather than financial gains. Moreover, the essence of this case is that there was a worldwide recall of Tylenol 34 of years ago. There was this individual from Chicago, Illinois, who put tablets that contain arsenic in unsold bottles of Tylenol on store shelves (Hosmer, 2011). No one knew the reason why that person did that; those contaminated tablets killed six people. After these... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In this Johnson and Johnson case, the Chief Executive Officer made sure that the customers exercised their freedom of choice in returning the Tylenol products while getting their refund for unopened tablets. The company acknowledged the two–way idea that everyone should act to ensure greater freedom for society. The idea in this case is where the company acted promptly and called back all Tylenol products, both nationally and internationally. The other part to this two–way idea is where the company went as far to take on over a $100 million loss and refunded their customers. Universal ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. Tylenol Scandal In the fall of 1982, Johnson & Johnson received a call from a reporter asking for a comment on the deaths in the Chicago area linked to Tylenol Extra Strength Capsules. This was the first the company had heard anything about the deaths being linked to their medicine. This wasn't surprising given in 1982, prior to the explosion of the internet; often the media was aware of information prior to the public. Very different from today where we all have access to information at our fingertips. Immediately discovering the news there were countless articles and TV releases of statements claiming Tylenol was the purpose for the deaths in Chicago. James Burke quickly assembled a seven–person team and informed them that their top priority was "how to ensure safety" and once that was taken care of then "how to save the Tylenol brand". This crisis was the first time Johnson & Johnson started to proactively engage the media and help write the story of what was actually occurring. Johnson & Johnson chose to recall all Tylenol products nationally, stopped production and media and issued statements broadly to warn the country of the immediate dangers. The issue was identified as product tampering after the product had shipped to the retailers. The Tylenol capsules had been laced with significant amounts of... • 6. Tylenol Murders Essay Crisis communication is an area of public relations that I find really fascinating. I enjoy learning about the proper steps that a professional takes when a company is pitted against a major crisis, and what they do in the face of chaos to turn the situation around and use the crisis in their own favor. One case study that exemplifies the degree to which a crisis can be managed effectively and a company can gain more respect by doing so is the case of the Chicago Tylenol Murdersin 1982. The tragic deaths of seven people who died due to potassium cyanide–laced Tylenol capsules started as a disaster for Tylenol producer Johnson and Johnson. However, J&J communicated with their publics and the media proficiently, investigated their... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Unsuccessful attempts were made to save them, but both died within a few days (Rowe.) While it was suspected that these deaths were suspiciously connected in some way, it was questionable as to how they were connected. However, it was noticed by two firefighters monitoring calls that both families had announced that the victims had ingested Tylenol prior to collapsing. The firefighters, Phillip Cappitelli and Richard Keyworth "call[ed] the coroner who confirms capsules of Tylenol obtained from both victim homes and finds 65 milligrams of cyanide in some of them" (Rowe.) When J&J realized that their Tylenol capsules caused the deaths of four Chicagoans, they immediately initiated a recall of all Tylenol products, and spread the news by any means possible. Cars with sirens and loudspeakers drove through the city and suburbs of Chicago, urging residents to throw away any Tylenol capsules they might have. Schools were contacted, and they instructed students to bring all Tylenol products to the school nurse. News flashes were initiated to warn people of the Tylenol danger as well, and all stores were instructed to remove Tylenol products from their shelves. Removing the products was a gutsy move, not only because it was dangerous to the company by recalling so much products, but there was also a fear that the killer ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

A 12 year old girl by the name of Mary Kellermen from Elk Grove Village, Chicago took some an extra strength Tylenol capsule to cure a sore throat and a runny nose. By 7 o'clock the next morning, Mary was dead. That same day a 27 year old postal worker by the name of Adam Janus from Arlington Heights, Illinois, was said to have died of from a massive heart attack. Janus' brother and sister–in–law, Stanley and Theresa, rushed to his home to grieve amongst their loved ones. Furthermore, Johnson & Johnson alongside FDA officials developed tamper–proof packaging methods that would soon become the standard for all over the counter medications. These included foil seals and other features that helped make it obvious to consumers if their medications have been altered in any way. Johnson and Johnson also intoduced the "caplet" – a tablet coated with slick, easy–to–swallow gelatin but far harder to tamper with than the older capsules which could be easily opened, laced with a contaminant, and then placed back in the older non–tamper–proof bottle (. Arlington Heights firefighter Philip Cappitelli talked with his friend Richard Keyworth from the Elk Grove firehouse about Mary Kellerman and the fact that she had taken Tylenol before she died. Keyworth suggested that all the deaths could have been related to the medicine. Following his friends suggestion, Cappitelli called the paramedics who worked on the Janus family and asked if they too had taken Tylenol. To both the men's surprise, they discovered all three Janus family members had ingested the popular pain reliever. The police were immediately sent to the Kellerman and Janus homes to retrieve the suspicious bottles. Investigators soon discovered the Tylenol link. Urgent warnings were broadcast, and police drove through Chicago neighborhoods issuing warnings over loudspeakers. During the initial investigations, a man named James William Lewis sent a letter to Johnson & Johnson demanding $1 million to stop the cyanide–induced murders. Police were unable to link him with the crimes, as he and his wife were living in New York City at the time. He was convicted of extortion, served 13 years of a 20–year sentence, and was released in 1995 on parole. WCVB Channel 5 of Boston reported that court documents, released in early 2009, "show Department of Justice investigators concluded Lewis was responsible for the poisonings, despite the fact that they did not have enough evidence to charge him." Lewis has denied responsibility for the poisonings for several years. A

  • 11. Why Is Tylenol The Culprit? For several years now, researchers have blamed common analgesics (pain relievers) and antipyretics (fever reducers), mainly acetaminophen (Tylenol) and ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin), as potential causes of asthma symptoms and new–onset asthma. However, more recent evidence seems to vindicate pain medicine. Here's 5 things to know. Tylenol becomes the leading pain medicine. In 1980, Aspirin was linked with Reye's Syndrome. This was also the same year that Tylenol was marketed as the pain reliever hospitals choose first. This quickly turned out to be a huge boon for the makers of Tylenol, whose sales skyrocketed over the ensuing years. Later in the decade ibuprofen became available as an alternative over the counter pain medicine and fever... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Study after study continued to confirm suspicions that common pain relievers were guilty. (3–4) Most studies only involve Tylenol. Keep in mind, that since acetaminophen is the most commonly used pain reliever and fever reducer, it's the one most often used in studies. It is generally considered a weaker pain reliever to ibuprofen, although it is more widely used because it's better tolerated than Aspirin and ibuprofen, which have both been shown to irritate the stomach. (3) Tylenol seems to lower glutathione levels. A theory arose that taking Tylenol reduces glutathione. It's a protein produced by many cells in your body, but it's also an antioxidant that prevents free radicals from causing oxidative stress, which can cause damage to cells, such as cells lining airways. Various studies have linked this with both asthma symptoms and new–onset asthma. Tylenol mostly affects glutathione levels in the liver, although it has also been shown to lower glutathione levels in the lungs. However, there are also other things that might lower glutathione. (4–6) The suspicions inspired concerns. Parents and physicians alike often wondered if they should even recommend these common pain relievers and fever reducers for children. Despite the link, the makers of Tylenol continued to insist their product was safe for adults and children of all ages. Many researchers continued to agree with the makers of Tylenol, noting that the link may simply be a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

It was reported that an unknown suspect put 65 milligrams of deadly cyanide into Tylenol capsules. It was assumed that the tampering occurred once the product reached the shelves. They were removed from the shelves, infected with cyanide and returned to the shelves (Mitchell 1989). In 1982, Tylenol controlled 37 percent of its market with revenue of about $1.2 million. After removing the product off the shelves they had to re–introduce the product. They put out promotions offering $2.50 off their next purchase. Compounding the matter was the fact that, in the beginning, the product tampered, and initial media reports focused that the product was responsible for death. When investigations revealed that the cause of the poisonings was external sabotage and even when that information became public knowledge, the situation proved to be a public relations nightmare. • 21. The Negative Analysis Of Johnson And Johnson's Tylenol Although crises situations happen, all situations are not doomed to failure. For instance, prior to its crisis, Johnson & Johnson's Tylenol was the most successful over–the–counter product in America (Harris, Hart, Hubbard, Jurgensen, & Wells, n.d.). An absolute leader in painkiller, Tylenol accounted for a 37 percent market share, outselling its competitors (Harris et al, n.d.). During the fall of 1982, a malevolent person or persons, presumably unknown, replaced Tylenol Extra–Strength capsules with an altered version of the medication (Harris et al, n.d.) Unbeknownst to the corporation, this unknown person(s) replaced the capsules with cyanide–laced capsules, resealed the packages, and deposited them onto the shelves of a least a half–dozen food stores within the Chicago area (Harris et at, n.d.). As a result, several unexpecting people died a horrible death (Harris et al, n.d.). Without any warning, Johnson & Johnson, a parent company of McNeil Consumer Products Company, endured negative media coverage that included information about the crisis before the organization knew about it. In addition, the company had to explain to the world, why its trusted product was suddenly killing people (Harris et al, n.d.). Initially, the company was blindsided by the incident and subsequently formed a seven–member strategy team to handle the crisis, protect consumers, save their product, and confront the negative media coverage (Harris et al, n.d.). Almost immediately, the company alerted consumers across the nation not to consume their product (Harris et al, n.d.). In addition, consumers were directed not to resume consumption until the extent of the tampering could be determined (Harris et al, n.d.). Moreover, Johnson & Johnson stopped production and advertisement and withdrew all Tylenol bottles from the store shelves in Chicago and the surrounding areas (Harris et al, n.d.). Following the discovery of two more contaminated bottles, Tylenol realized the vulnerability of their product and ordered that every capsule is withdrawn (Harris et al, n.d.). • 22. Analysis Of Ethical Decision And Scandal Analysis of ethical reaction to scandal Introduction The reputation of an organization is crucial. Therefore, being a leader of an organization has to be able to react efficiently and effectively when there is a threat to organization's reputation. Occasionally, a leader has to face a dilemma, whereby one has to decide how to deal with the scandals in the organizations. On one hand, some organizations treat their customers as a mean to gather the profits. On the other hand, other organizations regard their customers as an end, whereby the organizations really consider about customers' interests as an ultimate goal of their services. Nonetheless, only the companies that mad the ethical actions survived. Lacking a focus on the welfare of their customers, some propaganda techniques, aiming to cover up the scandals, usually don't work well. Instead, successful public relationship management techniques generally treat their customers' welfare as an end not just a mean. For example, a successful crisis management usually contains the honesty and quick reaction. Enron Corporation is a great example to illustrate how damaging it is if company leaders try to hide up the scandals and lie to the public. From Kant's perspective, customers, who are human beings objected to the service provided by organizations, should be treated with dignity, as "every rational being exists as an end in himself and not merely as a means to be arbitrarily used by this or that will" (Kant 428). • 27. The Effects Of Tylenol Products On The Economy According to Lewis (2006), crisis is "an interruption from previously normal state of functioning resulting in turmoil, instability, and a significant upheaval to a system" (p. 27). In other words, a crisis is a negative predictable or unpredictable event that affects the future trend of individuals, groups, organizations, and government. For instance, pharmaceutical company Johnson and Johnson had an unpredictable crisis in 1982 with its product Tylenol, which was laced with cyanide and led to several murders in Chicago. The events of this crisis could have changed the perception of Tylenol products. Another example of organizational crisis was the predictable 2012 Hurricane Sandy. Although companies of all sizes expected the Hurricane due to the weather forecasting, some areas in New York and New Jersey were affected worse than others. There were businesses that terminated operations for several business days. In addition to Hurricane Sandy being an organizational crisis, it was also a crisis for many families that lost power in their homes and a crisis for government departments such as FEMA (Federal Emergency Management Agency), and other agencies within local and state governments. Anxiety (or stress) should not be mistaken for a crisis. For instance, a parent being late picking–up his/her child from a daycare is not a crisis, it is anxiety that is sometimes manifested with a fast heartbeat, extreme sweating, etc. On the other hand, the 2012 Sandy Hook shooting ... Johnson and Johnson worked closely with the media, the FBI, the Chicago Police Department, as well as the Federal Food and Drug Administration to get to the bottom of the poisonings. It was discovered that an external being tampered with the bottles of Tylenol. The perpetrator was never caught. Unlike many companies in a time of crisis, Johnson and Johnson thought of their consumers before their profits and financial concerns (Kaplan). Johnson and Johnson made the choice to assume responsibility for the safety of their consumers, even though they were not responsible for the poisoning of its product. No one forced them to take responsibility, but they genuinely had concern for their consumer's safety. Johnson and Johnson took it to a level no company ever had before. They recalled 31 million bottles, which has a retail price of over $100 million. Case Analysis : Johnson & Johnson During 2009 and 2010, Johnson & Johnson subsidiary McNeil Consumer Healthcare recalled tens of thousands of children's medicine products, including the well–known brands Tylenol and Motrin (Haynes, 2015). The recall was done in response to complaints of particles in the liquid medicines produced by the Fort Washington, PA, facility. McNeil claimed these particles were small metal pieces, which did not pose any safety risks to consumers (Haynes, 2015). The public was unsettled by this revelation of Johnson & Johnson releasing defective products onto the market. After news of the recall, FDA investigators found that the plant had violated the federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act by not producing according to best industry practices (Haynes, 2015). Additional controversy was created when congressional investigations revealed that private contractors were hired to quietly buy back defective products without the public's knowledge in a "phantom recall" (Olaniran, Scholl, Williams, Boyer, 2012). Johnson & Johnson ineffectively used crisis communication in the following ways: first, the company was slow to respond to complaints of issues with products and perform the official recall, which led the public to lose trust in the organization; second, it performed a "phantom recall" of defective products without the public's knowledge, showing it was not willing to be transparent about the situation; third, CEO Bill Weldon avoided commenting on the crisis and sent a subordinate in his ... • 33. Essay On Chipotle Crisis 1. In the articles "Crisis at Chipotle" and "How to Handle a Crisis" both by Kristin Lewis and Adee Braun. They introduce the horrific story of food poisoning taken place at chipotle. Is these two articles it also shows how businesses should respond in a crisis successfully. The solution it presents is take immediate action to the public. Back in 1982 the well known medicine Tylenol was poisoned. The owners of the company took immediate action to the public telling about the dangers about the tylenol. "Johnson & Johnson issued a national alert warning the public. With in a few days, it had set up a hotline that people could call for information."(Lewis & Braun 14) With the company setting up a hotline and doing a national alert it shows how to successfully respond in a crisis because this company did everything so that people ... One way it can help is the aftermath of the crisis. After the crisis chipotle took to the website stating that there will be food safety measures. "Chipotle has continued to make improvements to is food– safety measures, which are clearly outlined on its website."(Lewis & Braun 13) With chipotle stating that they are improving on there food safety measures it shows to people when they see it that they are trying to make there food safe. Which makes people trust them making them eat there again. One way it can hurt the company is people comments and horrific stories about their time at chipotle. When people say there unpleasant stories it makes people not want to eat there. "As outraged diners took to twitter and facebook with horror stories about dirty restaurants and cases of burrito induced diarrhea,"( Lewis & Braun 12) When people comment these things it drives people to not eat there. • 35. Tylenol Persuasive Essay Acetaminophen, commonly known as Tylenol, is perhaps the most frequently used painkiller in the United States and Europe. Obtaining Tylenol is as simple as driving to the local grocery store. However, there is a hidden danger overlooked by citizens who frequently consume painkillers such as Tylenol: liver failure. "The active ingredient in Tylenol, acetaminophen, accounts for more than 100,000 calls to poison centers, roughly 60,000 emergency–room visits and hundreds of deaths each year in the United States. In England, it is the leading cause of liver failure requiring transplants" (Citation 1). The outrageous number of medical complications Tylenol is causing is due to how readily available the drug is and how people are taking more than the recommended dose regularly. Liver damage can be reduced due to acetaminophen by making Tylenol prescription–only or by limiting the number of pills per package, thereby decreasing the availability of the pain–killer. First, due to the number of doses of... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The drug is so popular that Americans bought 28 billion doses of Tylenol in 2005 (Citation 1). Tylenol should be sold in smaller dose containers, reducing the amount bought at a time. Wholesale clubs should not be allowed to sell acetaminophen in 500 pill bottles, thus giving more of an opportunity for consumers to abuse the drug. Selling Tylenol in small dose containers and limiting how many may be purchased at a time will reduce the amount of pills in the household, therefore, becoming an inconvenience to have to go purchase more. Maybe then people will use Tylenol sparingly to avoid the headache of going to the store for more due to using too much at once. As market tempers simmered, the company initiated the process of reintroducing the product into the market. According to Moore (2012), the company had to make drastic changes in the way they packaged, sold, and advertised Tylenol. Firstly, they moved to add tamper–resistant packaging to each Tylenol bottle. Secondly, they reviewed product prices downwards and introduced coupons for customers. Lastly, the company hired thousands of sales representatives that went around the country giving medical presentations. It has become recognized world wide as a safe brand of acetaminophen. The name Tylenol has become identified as a trusted, safe drug that people can easily purchase over the counter for their ailments. Tylenol is still recommended by doctors even though there was a cyanide scare in the history of the company. It has been discovered by my independent survey that consumers use Tylenol for their pet's needs also. These episodes could have been devastating to the McNeil company by drastic decrease in consumption of the Tylenol products. The McNeil company rallied to the situation to counter this possible decrease in consumption. According to "Laurels: The National Business Hall of Fame", Tylenol's share in the one billion dollar analgesic market commanded thirty–five percent of the market before the 1982 incident. At the time of these episodes, consumer trust was damaged and market share decreased to seven percent. By February 1983, Tylenol had regained a twenty–four percent share of the market(Diary of an Amazing Comeback). In the 1990's, Tylenol again reached its thirty–five percent of the market which at this time accounted for a two billion dollar market(Laurels: The National Business Hall of Fame, Fortune). By regaining their share of the market, this demonstrated that the consumers had faith in the McNeil company's ability to produce safe and trustworthy products, i.e. Tylenol, for their comfort and happiness. In my independent survey, it was noted that a person used Tylenol products for their animal needs as well. Even though it has a high level of safety in people, it is frequently misused and overdosed in animals. Tylenol is listed ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The Tylenol Crisis Although Johnson and Johnson was a big company at the time of the Tylenol crisis, the company has never faced a complicated problem as the one that Tylenol was affronting at the time. In addition, there were no evidences or records of any other similar problem, neither in the pharmaceutical industry nor in the food industry. The lack of background on that kind of situation represented at the time a big challenge for the company. Tylenol was one of the most spectacular success stories in the pharmaceutical industry, because in about 6 year period, the product increased revenue from $50 million in 1975 to more than $350 million in 1981. In 1960 the company promoted Tylenol among doctors and pharmacists as an alternative pain reliever. By 1981, before the Tylenol crisis, the company had 35% market share on the analgesic market, and the company was targeting to achieve 50% for the year 19861. • 40. Before The Tylenol Crisis Introduction In January 1886 a renowned family business, Johnson & Johnson was founded in New Brunswick, New Jersey, by Robert Wood Johnson along with his brothers James Wood Johnson and Edward Mead Johnson. These three recognized physicians were inspired at the time by Joseph Lister, who was a pioneer of antiseptic surgery, seized the opportunity and started the company. This Company was established at a time when sterile surgical practices were deficient in the medical field. The success of their medical products, including sterile sutures and dressing materials, allowed the young company to grow rapidly. Thus, Johnson and Johnson today emerged from a small company that made surgical dressings into a multinational pharmaceutical giant. Investigations at the time revealed that once the product reached the shelves, some of them were removed from the shelves, tampered and contaminated with deadly cyanide ingredients and then resealed, repackaged and replaced on the shelves by unscrupulous persons for motives unknown in pharmacies and grocery stores, causing the deaths. This crisis resulted in a recall of the Tylenol products on the market and Johnson & Johnson's executives had to weigh several pressing issues for example, the loss in its market share that made it difficult for the company to take a decision in the cyanide crises. This recall could further seriously put a dent in the intangibles; that may lead to the loss of public confidence and damage to the brand. • 41. Tylenol Pill Case How many of you have taken a tylenol pill. What if you died days after taking them, what about hours, minutes, seconds. This is what happened in Chicago 1982 after someone got tylenol pills and poisoned them with 100 to 10000 times the fatal dose. Seven people were killed and more poisoned bottles were found after this. One family and other individuals were found dead because of this. In total it ended up being seven dead. No one was ever convicted for the murders, but three people were suspects in the investigation. The first suspect was James W. Lewis. He was a con–artist and his handwriting was found to match the two letters to the white house as treats. The first letter sent was threatening the white house to continue the poisonings and the second was also threatening the white house that he was going to bomb it. The only problem about this suspect was that he was in New York for about 27 days before the murders. This is a problem because the cyanide which was the poison used would have eaten throughout the capsules. The poison would have been needed to be planted up to a day before the murders. Some people think he got a ticket from New York to Chicago then got a taxi planted the fake pills in the bottles then got another ticket and got out of there. ... • 42. The 1982 Tylenol Scandal Crisis Tylenol, an over the counter prescription product from Johnson & Johnson, was one of the top brands in the analgesic market. Within the company, it was also a large income earner that commanded nearly 15% of the company's total profits. That being the case, the 1982 crisis was not only a big blow to the brand, but also to the company as a whole. The crisis jeopardized the company's existence; putting at risk a multi million investment which the investors had a lot of faith in. Irrespective of whether the crisis was due to malicious acts from ill motivated criminals or not, the company had to act swiftly to counter the legal issues which were ensuing and mitigate huge impending losses. It was really a trying moment for the top management of Johnson & Johnson and more so to the CEO, James Burke, who faced the toughest test of his managerial career during this time. Though the crisis was amicably solved, there were some legal issues that were imminent and some valuable lessons learnt from the episode. Legal Issues Surrounding 1982 Tylenol Scandal In both developed and underdeveloped economies, there is a need to put regulations which ensure that profits are not abnormally earned at the expense of the innocent clients.
