DIVING: A Window to an Unexplored World Mankind has always been very curious about the ocean and its secrets. In the past centuries,
countless numbers of inventions and experiments have been made in an attempt to maximize the time that a person can stay underwater. Thanks
to a device called the aqualung, invented in 1943 by Jacques Cousteau, people were able to dive down and explore the ocean with his/her own air
source without the need to be connected to an air source at the surface. Eventually, this lead to the formation of a subculture around the sport, with
many divers around the world exploring the world's oceans. There are many reasons to be a part of this subculture. I interviewed Luke Inman, a
successful Instructor Trainer for the Professional Association of Dive Instructors, and an avid filmmaker and photographer who constantly works
with the BBC, Discovery Networks, National Geographic, & Animal Planet, and after asking him what rituals or practices a person must do to
become part of this subculture, he answered: "You have to have a love for the ocean, you have to love fish". You also need to take a Scuba course.
This course is called an Open Water Diver course (or OWD for short); this will be the diver's first certification. It teaches you about atmospheric

SSI Joins Head/Mares The other day Head, who owns the Mares diving equipment brand, announced they have reached an agreement to acquire
Scuba Schools International (SSI). The effective date will be 1 January,2014. SSI will be acquired by the Mares Brand. Most of the press release was
the standard rah rah we are the greatest type of stuff that corporations use when making announcements. There were a few sentences that seem to be
place there to insure no one felt threaten by the announcement. First it was stated that SSI will continue to work with all manufacturers and from the
other viewpoint, that mares will continue to work with all training agencies. That just seem to be a statement meant to calm the competition. I was
asked, what did I think this acquisition would mean in the long run. The simple question got my retired business consultant side of my brain thinking
and I started to do some research and look at the press release again. Let me make my disclaimer, these are my viewpoints and I have no connections

Scuba diving is the most frequently used mode in recreational diving and, in various forms, is also widely used to perform underwater work for
military, scientific, and commercial purposes.
There were many steps in the development of a successful self–contained underwater system. In 1808, Freiderich yon Drieberg invented a
bellows–in–a–box device that was worn on the diver's back and delivered compressed air from the surface. This device, named Triton, did not

A significant breakthrough was not seen until 1943. Captain Jacques Cousteau and Emile Gagnan finished development of the Aqua Lung. The Aqua
Lung used a similar on–demand valve that drew from two to three cylinders that each contained over 2500 psi of breathable gas. Some years later, the
Lambertsen Amphibious Respiratory System was completed. This was later named S.C.U.B.A. This was developed and used by the military of

Globally, marine ecosystems, in particular, coral reefs, are experiencing increasing pressure due to the growth in recreational scuba diving, and
snorkeling. Pressure refers to the frequency, and quantity of divers, and dive boats on any particular reef. This pressure often results in damage to the
reef, and is caused by divers, snorkelers, and even dive boat anchors, and anchor lines, furthermore, this damage takes significant time to repair, due to
the rate at which coral grows, and repairs itself. Although this damage is not irreparable, continual pressure by recreational dive and snorkeling

Hydrostatic and Atmospheric pressure are the two major components which act upon a diver at depth. Hydrostatic pressure refers to the weight of the
water above the diver, whereas Atmospheric Pressure is equal to the total weight of theatmosphere above the water.

Although air is very light, the atmosphere above the earth is approximately 150km high. This amount of air has extensive weight and exerts significant
pressure on the earth surface. Atmospheric pressure at sea level can be referred to as, 1 ATA or one bar.
A diver descending to a depth of 10 meters, is equivalent to the entire 150km of atmospheric air (1 ATA). This is due to water being much denser than
air. If the diver were to descend another 10 meters, the water will exert a further pressure, equal to another atmosphere, 2 ATA.

One previous invention that helped in the development of the Aqua–Lung is designed by Emile Gagnan, which was first used for car engines. In
Paragraph 3, it states, "Its chief feature was that it helped supply the exact amount of fuel needed for an engine to run, reducing unnecessary usage and

Underwater Photography : An Enthusiast Of The Sport
When thinking about a choice for the subject of this assignment, I knew I wanted to look into underwater photographers. I am a recently certified
scuba diver and have quickly become an enthusiast of the sport. My recent purchase of a GoPro camera inspired my interest in photography and in
taking this course. Underwater photography was naturally something I wanted to know more about. In my initial research, I found several
professionals; most of whom would have been very suitable for this assignment. What intrigued me about Adriana Basques is that there are so many
elements to her work that I respect; her determination, creativity, ability to inspire, and her courage, as well as her high level goals in continuing this
chosen path. The first thing I was drawn to in Adriana's work was how striking her images are. There is often a shock element, borne of her creative,
determined and often fearless approach to getting the shots she wants. I like her perfectionist attitude – her desire to learn everything about her work
and to strive to be excellent at it, whether it's diving or capturing images. The final result is collection after collection of images with intense clarity,
color and light, that tell a captivating story about life under the sea. However, there's not only the shock factor, or the natural beauty of the
environment in her images. She also has a strong ability to elicit emotion from the viewer. I find myself admiring her. As a previous executive for
