The document provides information about a brief from York College for a promotional video between 30 seconds and 1 minute. The brief requires the video to show the college location and facilities, demonstrate the working environment and equipment, include an interview about the course, and have motion graphics and branding. Existing promotional videos for similar clients are discussed, focusing on their use of interviews, filming techniques, music, and branding. Initial ideas, resources, roles, and a schedule are proposed. Risk assessment, production logs, and an evaluation of constraints, management, and feedback are also included.
3. BRIEF/CLIENT
Discuss the brief. Discuss who the client is, and what the
expectations are.
For this project I am required to plan and create a short
promotional video for york college, containing information and
visuals related to the Level 3 creative media course. My client,
york college have provided me with a brief stating the standard
requirements they want included in the video, the brief involves
standard aspects of a promotional video that I have to develop
into my own ideas. The clients requirements are:
• The video should show the location of the college and rooms
• The video should demonstrate the working environment,
software and hardware facilities
• It should feature an interview, highlighting key aspects of the
course and the quality of study
• It would be beneficial to include motion graphics
• Include branding and website address as a ending title card
The video will be between 30 seconds and 1 minute long.

The promotional video for Woodlands school contains multiple interviews with students
of all ages, performing in different educational aspects of the school which gives the
viewer an idea of all the different facilities and equipment that the school has to offer. It
focuses on key subject areas, such as art, music, science and sport etc, with an
interview from a student for every subject that is focused on, where they describe the
course and visually demonstrate what the subject consists of. This is an effective
concept as promotional videos for schools or education are aimed at potential students
so it is good for the viewer to see what the school is like through the perspective of a
student which they can relate to. For shooting techniques the video uses multiple
candid shots that focus on groups of students, teachers or entire classrooms, this
helps to illustrate the day to day workings of the school to the viewer. A great majority
of the video is made up of panning shots, by creating steady movement in a frame
instead of just simple still frames a flow is developed helping to not bore the viewers
and keep them engaged with the videos visual aspects. The music used is a calm piano
tune that plays throughout the video, the volume and pace of the music starts out low
and gradually builds as the video goes on, the cuts throughout the video mostly seem
to link up with the music and the music volumes is greatly lowered during the
interviews in order to bring focus to what the person is saying. The end of the video
shows the logo accompanied by important information supporting the school such as
the address, website and phone number.

The promotional video for studying at London college of communication is made up of both shots
containing visual example of students within a working environment and tutors from all courses,
giving short detailed explanations of what each course entails and how students learn, every interview
seems to transition into a voice over as the screen shows facilities and real classroom situations that
help to visually explain the narrative concerning a subject. The video seems to use subtle movement
in the frame in order to better engage their audience without over using massive pans which can often
make the technique become boring and confusing as the camera is constantly moving over large
distances. The video is aimed at potential students, the video engages with this audience by showing
what the classes are like and highlighting the outstanding facilities and equipment that they will
potentially be using, for the interviews animated titles containing the interviewees name and how they
are involved within the college giving viewers an idea of who the staff is and what they are like. The
music is fast paced and stays on a constant loop keeping up with an effective rhythm throughout the
video, the up tone beat engages the viewer as it syncs well with the multiple cuts in the video. The
logo is shown at the end of the video, it consists of the college name and logo in bold white text
against a black background, this relates to the college as it is part of an arts university, so it is obvious
that knowledge of this area has been used in the logos simplistic yet gripping design.
I feel that the promotional video for London college of communication is a lot more effective that that
of Woodlands school, even though both videos are similar in their concepts and filming techniques
LCC seem to employ a more professional style. For example, in the interviews for LCC the
interviewees speak directly to the camera in a slightly informal manner where their words seem to
slow easily as if in a conversation with the viewer, allowing the viewer to engage more with what the
person is saying, this is probably due to the college using staff members and professionals who have
a lot of experience in talking and engaging with people. The interview style in the woodlands school
video completely contrast with that of LCC, most of the interviewees seem tense and it is easy to tell
that he lines are all completely scripted, which is due to the school using young students who aren't
always the most confident talkers which greatly disrupts the flow of the video. The production value of
the LCC video seems much higher than woodlands school, probably due to how one of the largest
subjects within LCC is film so they have access to top grade equipment and a great number of highly
