Channel 4's target audience is 16-34 year olds due to its alternative programming. The average Channel 4 viewer is a male aged 25-39 from the midlands of England. Channel 4 idents feature abstract computer-generated sequences that slowly form the number four.
Channel 5 is one of Channel 4's main competitors as they both target 16-35 year olds with documentary-style shows. Channel 5 idents feature live footage combined with subtle computer graphics to emphasize the number 5 brand.
The document proposes two ideas for idents for a new channel called "The Grid": one uses lights on a keyboard or city skyline to spell out the name, while another uses squares with channel content fitting together to

Channel 4
• The target audience of channel 4 are 16-34 year olds, this is mainly due to the alternative and
challenging programming that the show televises, which are known to relate more with the
younger generation as they seem to be more open minded with open minded toward shows that
don’t exactly fit in with the social norm and are seen as quite rique for British television, this
includes shows such as naked attraction, which consists of people standing naked on a stage, having
their bodily features and general look rated by someone who then takes them on a date. The social
valuation sight ‘ You.Gov ’ describe in high detail the average viewer of channel 4, they state that
the average viewer is a male aged 25-39, known to be in social grade ABC1 which puts them under
higher professional managerial occupations and supervisor or junior managerial occupations, the
sight also describes them as being very left wing and mainly from the midlands of England, the
sight seems to give a lot of unnecessary information and some not completely accurate but its
helpful as it give you more of a detailed insight in to the average channel 4 viewer in some respect.
Channel 4 indents are usually made up of computer generated sequences of abstract settings
where objects and blocks slowly fit together to make up the number four as the camera slowly pans
the scene bringing all aspects of the sequence into full view. These creative visual effects are used
to engage with the audience as they are young and accustomed to new technology so they need
something to ‘ wow ‘ them cinematically through methods almost impossible to obtain through live
film.

• A channel to channel 4 is the main competitor of the channel, channel 5.
The two are in competition as they share the same values of trying to be a
more different and progressive channel to the rest of mainstream British
programming with new and exciting documentary series such as one born
every minute 24 hours in police custody on channel 4 along with shows
along with shows such as ice road and police interceptors on channel 5,
the shows are effective with the audience as they give insight into things
that the majority of everyday people don’t experience, die to these similar
shows and channel styles the two channels share the same target
audience of 16-35 year olds. Channel 5 idents mainly consist of live
footage incorporated with subtle uses of real looking computer generated
imagery used to emphasise the brand name through the use of the
number 5. like these channels I to plan on using creative visual effects to
grab the viewers eye and interest them in the scene, whilst at the same
time promoting my channels brand and identity, my channel is caller ‘the
grid’, so like channel 5 and channel 4 I plan on integrating the brand into
the formation of my ident.

7. This is a prototype idea that I made on Photoshop using to different picture images,
one of a keyboard without the key lights on and another with them on. I used the
clone stamp tool (S) to take small images of of the keys on one keyboard and placed
them on the other image, allowing me to spell out ‘The Grid’. This is only a still image
representation of one of me ideas, if this idea progresses it will involve motion
graphics as well as being more detailed and professional.
8. Another Idea I had was taking the concept of grids from a city and implementing that
into my idents through using lights to spell the channel name, ‘The Grid’. These are two
still images I made on Photoshop showcasing what this idea would actually look like,
just like with my previous idea I used clone stamp tool (S) and took small images of
lights from different parts of the picture, I then strategically pasted them to make up
the words. If I use this idea for my final product I will take a much more detailed
approach to put this ident at high professional standards.
