1. In this extract I’m going to examine the different shot types, sound/music and purpose of the
promotional video for King Edward School. I will analyse the areas that make the piece come
together which produces such an attractive attention for the audience
In the King Edward school promotional video there is very good use of camera shots to differentiate
the scenes being shown and the timing of the shots are accurate. At the beginning of the video we
are introduced to the Head teacher using a mid-shot of the school with the title at the bottom saying
who the focus is on at that specific time. This mid-shot is sufficient because it shows the head
teacher’s formality and posture, but also shows a bit of the background to give the audience an
imagery idea of what sort of school they’re advertising.
We then get an extreme long shot showing the exterior of the building, allowing the audience to
visualise what the building looks like and the conditions it holds. We can see from the filming that
it’s a modern school, refurbished not too long ago. Having this long shot is useful because it gives the
audience more of an idea on the size of the building and what to expect the building holds interiorly.
One useful technique used in the promotional video is the ‘panning effect’. This effect was useful
because the producer gave the audience the chance to see a whole specific shot of the exterior
building going across from one end to another. This made it more interesting rather than having
single still shots of the school, this way the audience could engage more with the piece.
2. Close-up is a technique demonstrated by the producer to show the objects that the students use and
to also show their proffesionalism inside the classrooms and studying spaces. The shots started off
from a range and then slowly zoomed into the students, giving the video a professional effect. Using
the close up procedure also tells us what the school has to offer in subject wise.
In this screen shot you can identify the establishing still shots of specific figures of the school that
the promoters want to stand out. For example at the beginning of the video, the promoter
symbolises to us the logo of the school giving an extreme close up of it.
