Task 5 evaluation for the creative media digital video project

  1. 1. Ben Turner Unit 4, 5 and 62 20/5/13(Evaluation for the Creative Media Digital Video)I was asked to produce a promotional digital video within a certain department within thecollege where it will be formatted onto a DVD to send to potential students and uploading itto any existing or ready-made websites. I also needed to keep a record of thecommunications and correspondence between myself and the client where I negotiated thebrief in order to decide on the style, length and content of the digital video depending uponthe client requirements.I have adhered to all of the provisional guidance that has been given by the client where Inarrowed down the timeline for the Creative Media Digital Video from approximately 5minutes to 2 minutes. I have uploaded the digital video of the Creative Media BTEC courseto my Website Portfolio which stores all of the work that is related to what I couldpotentially be working towards in the future such as, Websites and Animations etc.
  2. 2. Ben Turner Unit 4, 5 and 62 20/5/13(Evaluation for the Creative Media Digital Video)I got feedback on the Creative Media Digital Video through 10 questionnaires in which usersof the Creative Media Digital Video have commented on the following:Enjoyable aspects of the Creative Media Digital Video:Introduction music was good – faded in low and then loud between transitionsfilmed within the collegeThe understanding of the courseThe way the video was presented was goodThe music was amazing and the intro explained the video wellThe audio commentary over the videoCreated a professional new product and work relating to your own designs and ideaswere clear! Really liked the music and shots of the teachers helping!Excellent graphics for advertising the course and the song fitted in well with the styleof the video. Good interviewThe honesty of the informationThe liveliness of the visuals and audio combinedAll of it, I enjoyed itHow the soundtrack fitted in within the Creative Media DigitalVideo:The 1sttrack Good, Young - College type of song. Upbeat and high-tempoIt was upbeat and kept me listeningIt was good at filling in blank spaceBecause it was digital and represented the course wellIt was an exciting track, which faded out before the narrationThese illustrations show examples of the work done for the iWiiTouch website on the websitepage and the animated content that was used as part of the site as well on the video page for myPortfolio website. There is also an additional animation which is sporty fun run involves character1 the striker attempting to score and character 2 the goalkeeper trying to keep the ball out.
  3. 3. Ben Turner Unit 4, 5 and 62 20/5/13(Evaluation for the Creative Media Digital Video)I feel like a it was a happy, upbeat music track which indulged me in the video! It’s not boringIt was upbeat and lively which fitted well for this videoThe music was fast paced and lively which fitted in well with the subject matter thatwas muted so that you could clearly hear the speech of the participantsWell-chosen song that fitted with the style of the videoHow the transitions flowed throughout the Creative MediaDigitalVideo:Transitions were smooth - I particularly liked the way that music and audiocommentary was laid over the visualsDid not really notice them. Which is a good sign showing that they were wellexecuted and helped with the viewing of the videoThey cut in at the right moments to show what the speaker was talking aboutYes they all were goodI felt they flowed really well and looked professionalThe Marple logo was clearly presented and for a long enough time to read it. Thesame applied to the website links at the end of the videoIt seems almost fluid and seamlessThe video went along smoothlyThey didn’t interfere with the clipsI like the way the music plays in-between the slides. Logos and Advertising thecollegeWhat did you dislike about the Creative Media Digital Video:It only had one person reviewIt didn’t really say what you do on the courseI didn’t like how the music stopped for someone to speak and the Cheadle andMarple logo was a bit pixelisedNothingThe audio was really loud at some pointsThe levels need to be checked after the opening intro – (bit loud)Nothing that I disliked
  4. 4. Ben Turner Unit 4, 5 and 62 20/5/13(Evaluation for the Creative Media Digital Video)How could I improve the Creative Media Digital Video:Add some classroom footage – other learners and to demonstrate the classroomsand the layoutDo more interviews with more peopleHave other peoples thoughts and opinions of the courseThe volume of the soundtrack could have equalled the audio commentaryI wanted to see more! But nothing really! Maybe an interview with the teacherNothing I think it was goodControl the level of music so it doesn’t surprise the audiencePerhaps include 1 or 2 more interviews, perhaps with staff or another student.Maybe the Cheadle and Marple logo at the end for promoting how people get intouchCollege logo to be on screen for a slightly shorter timeOverall, the people who filled out the questionnaires did feel that it flowed well throughouthowever, the volume level could be adjusted and there could be more interviews addedtowards the Creative Media Digital Video.Overall, I think that the “Creative Media Digital Video” product almost reflects professionalstructured layouts and I do feel that I have covered all of the aspects of the digital video interms of the continuity of the scenery, condensing the timeline, and the way the visuals andsound are put together within the “Creative Media Digital Video” product.
  5. 5. Ben Turner Unit 4, 5 and 62 20/5/13(Evaluation for the Creative Media Digital Video)In comparison to, the “Cheadle and Marple New DVD” product that was taken from theYouTube website. It also includes a combination of moving text captions and animatedfeatures such as, The Cheadle and Marple logo animation effect consists it moving in on theright-hand side and ended up being in the centre of the video screen and photo realisticimages of people moving around quickly in motion. All of the text is formatted into a Whitecolour scheme and is displayed within the clearest font and style for the audience that the“Creative Media Digital Video” is aimed at. The “Cheadle and Marple New DVD” productcomprehensively talks about how the college is a user-friendly environment for anypotential student and how you get to manage your own work and responsibilities moreindependently. It also has its own house style which is characterised within all of the textcaptions within the “Cheadle and Marple New DVD”which is Dark-Blue and Light-Greenwhere this helps to resemble the whole theme of the “Cheadle and Marple New DVD”. Onthe whole, I feel that the “Creative Media Digital Video” does reflect professional standardswhere the soundtrack is integrated very well throughout the digital video and clearlydisplays the visuals and audio commentary.I distributed 10 questionnaires to people about “What makes a successful promotionaldigital video?” where I put together a report detailing all of the comments made by thepeople filling out the questionnaires covering the likes, dislikes, resourcesthat you would bemore likely to use within the course, what students found most enjoyable and the aspects ofa successful promotional digital video in which they said the following:Likes:Learning new stuffClass sizeThe work we learnHands on coursePractical areas such as, Video editing, Stop-Motion Animation and Digital GraphicsCreating things i.e. Websites, Trailers and AnimationUsing different software to create the media productGenerally like the whole courseEverything is different and have to learn different parts of the Creative Media course
  6. 6. Ben Turner Unit 4, 5 and 62 20/5/13(Evaluation for the Creative Media Digital Video)Dislikes:Some of the software applications usedTechnical aspects of the software packageToo much of the mind-set on written workDeadlinesWritten work, reports and presentationsWritten work drags onPresenting in front of classResources that you would be more likely to use within the course:Flash and Director software apps etc.Computer, correct software packagesCurrent software applicationsGeneralised software built in with the PCAccess to the internet and the local intranet within the collegeCS software and editing softwareAll camera and sound equipmentBooks and Journals etc.Relevant equipment for course assignmentsWhat students found most enjoyable:Fun and Learn new stuffLearning new software appsHow things are made e.g. Movies and AnimationsMade a change from written workChance to show off their creativityDeveloping new software skillsVery hands on approach to the courseBeing able to experiment different software applicationsUsing new equipment and working with other peopleAspects of a successful promotional digital video:Has to be entertainingHas to have catchy music and exciting visual footageHas to have a good theme or story relevant to productHas to be informative, honest, short and sharpHas to be personally recommend or endorsed by celebrities (if possible)
  7. 7. Ben Turner Unit 4, 5 and 62 20/5/13(Evaluation for the Creative Media Digital Video)I then researched into understanding the target audience in relation to my Creative MediaDigital Video project where I covered topics like Age, Gender, Location, BARB, RAJAR andELSPA which are the following:Age:Is where a media product can be aimed at a certain age range which is very muchdependent upon the area of the target market for the product. It can be used to determinethe allocation and lifestyle of the age group for a particular media product where this can beidentified by what is called geo-demographics and demographics. These illustrations show the way in which the target audience for a media product can beallocated and how they can identify the age range for a product within the media industry.
  8. 8. Ben Turner Unit 4, 5 and 62 20/5/13(Evaluation for the Creative Media Digital Video)The target age group for my media product which is digital video for promoting the CreativeMedia BTEC course is aimed at 16 to 21 years old who are eager to expand on theirknowledge on computing. I have chosen this age group because it would not be best suitedfor anyone below this age range because of the challenges that the course has to offer.Cheadle and Marple is a Sixth Form College and so exists to cater for the education of post16 learners.Gender:Many media products are targeted specifically at Male or Female audiences and someproducts focus more on one gender than the other. For example, the chart below shows themix of gender targeting for a particular media product.Another example could be television programmes which are “Real Housewives of New YorkCity” and “Loose Women” where these are targeted specifically at women. In contrastaction film or drama such as, James Bond films are targeted mostly at Men.For my media product it would be aimed equally at Male or Female who are interested intaking on an additional computing course subject. This is because the College has a policyrelating to actual discrimination laws preventing inequality between genders. However, some college courses traditionally attract mostly Male or Female students. That isto say, Health and Social courses are mostly chosen by Females and BTEC Sport course areasare targeted at Men. But in my current Creative Media class there is about 30 to 40 percentFemale students which shows that it does appeal towards both genders.
  9. 9. Ben Turner Unit 4, 5 and 62 20/5/13(Evaluation for the Creative Media Digital Video)Location:Is to do with the way media products can be allocated towards certain areas within theMedia Industry. For instance, the Cheadle and Marple Sixth Form College would be locatedwithin Cheadle where the actual address in on the website itself which is the following:www.camsfc.ac.uk.It also provides a College site map within Cheadle that enables users to easily spot thelocation of the Cheadle and Marple Sixth Form College. It allows anyone who is within theregion of Manchester to actually allocate the area of the Cheadle Campus in which is veryhelpful for people who are not very familiar with the layout of the college itself especially, the visually impaired people as well.
  10. 10. Ben Turner Unit 4, 5 and 62 20/5/13(Evaluation for the Creative Media Digital Video)BARB:Is the “Broadcasters Audiences Research Board” which provides the most full-bodied in-home TV measurement system within the globe which oversees 5,000 TV households withinthe UK and observe around 15,000 TV viewers in total. It mainly monitors the televisionratings in which was compiled with the ITV and the BBC’s own ratings including other TVbroadcasters such as, Channel 4, Five, BskyB and the IPA (Institute of Practitioners inAdvertising) but the BARB was purposely produced in order to replace these systems withmore up-to-date TV viewing figures.See the Weekly Total Viewing Summary webpage below…..
  11. 11. Ben Turner Unit 4, 5 and 62 20/5/13(Evaluation for the Creative Media Digital Video)This document shows the latest weekly TV viewing figures which summarises all of the numericaldata that is obtained of the number of people who watch TV throughout different areas such as,Channel and Average Weekly Viewings etc.
  12. 12. Ben Turner Unit 4, 5 and 62 20/5/13(Evaluation for the Creative Media Digital Video)The BARB TV company is mainly liable for the number of TV viewing estimations of thepeople within the UK nation. The viewing data is assembled by second-by-second and it isdelivered on a minute-by-minute basis for all of the channels that are transmissionablethroughout the UK so that subscribers can access the data available the morning after thepresent time of TV broadcasting.RAJAR:It was originally established in 1992 in order to conduct a single audience measurementsystem within the radio industry through the BBC and the UK licensed commercial stations. Is a term that stands for Radio Joint Audience Research in and is the main official body thatis responsible for measuring radio audiences nationally within the UK. This process is carriedout through a survey in which there are 320 individual stations currently involved within thesurveying and publication of the outcomes every 3 months. This webpage document reveals the weekly TV viewing figures for the BBC2 Channel where thecapacity number of viewers comprises of Millions in which this process is implemented for otherchannels such as, BBC1, ITV1, Channel 4 and Five. It also states the weekly range in when the TVprogrammes within the BBC2 are broadcasted.
  13. 13. Ben Turner Unit 4, 5 and 62 20/5/13(Evaluation for the Creative Media Digital Video)ELSPA:Was the term that stood for, “The Entertainment and Leisure Software PublishersAssociation”, which was formed in the year 1989 by the VSP (Videogame SoftwarePublishers within the UK. It is now currently named as the UKIE (United Kingdom InteractiveEntertainment Industry) and is the leading videogame trade body within the nation. Theyhave an entity in order to support the interests, needs and positive image of Videogame andInteractive Entertainment. This map shows the different areas in which thesurvey is operated so that it can measure thecapacity of the number of radio listeners. This webpage extract illustrates the types of radio listening figures that used within a broaderrange of different radio transmission zones in order to classify their target audience. It uses arange of tags in order to categorise the listening figures into different areas such as, AverageHours Per Head, Average Hours Per Listener and the total number of hours in thousands etc.
  14. 14. Ben Turner Unit 4, 5 and 62 20/5/13(Evaluation for the Creative Media Digital Video)It is a thriving and progressive company in which mainly focuses on the publication anddevelopment of the videogames throughout the UK nation. It also includes certain ageratings of the videogames which help them to classify a particular audience in which thegame is aimed at.I made sure that I did internal research on the target audience by looking at existing collegevideos and talking to LSA’s (Learning Support Assistant) about the sort of target audiencethat the digital video would more likely be aimed at. I then discussed with students abouttheir favourite promotional digital videos and what they think would make a successfulpromotion of the digital video. This document gives guidance as to the work that is involved within the UKIE Company. This image shows all of the age ratings that are implemented throughout all of the videogamesthat are produced and developed.
  15. 15. Ben Turner Unit 4, 5 and 62 20/5/13(Evaluation for the Creative Media Digital Video)I took a total of 23 shots in which some of the audio became a bit ambiguous and tedious tolisten to but in general the quality was really good. However, initially I was using my owncamera in which I felt that the quality was not good enough. So therefore, I changed it to aHD (High Definition) camera in which the quality had drastically improved. The shooting wassteady and accurate where could clearly see what was happening within every clip that wastaken throughout the filming production process for the Creative Media Digital Videoproject. I initially had taken shots with my teammate `Shaun Daniels` but as time moved onI operated with the camera by myself in order to take shots of the support that isprovidedfor the students within the Creative Media BTEC course. On the whole, I feel that all of the clips were edited down for the right reasons because theclient did asked for it to be a timescale of about 2 to 3 minutes in order to keep theaudience interested in what the Creative Media Digital Video has to offer. The clips thathave been chosen and edited within the digital video are the following:Introduction to the College Course SubjectInterview with student Shaun DanielsSupporting a Student in ClassThe soundtrack Gonzales – Working Together (Boys Noize Dub Remix) was edited downreally well in which it displayed the visuals and audio very well without any interruptionfrom the soundtrack itself within the background for the Creative Media Digital Videoproject. As a whole, I feel that the continuity of the soundtrack was very well integrated throughoutall of the clips within the Creative Media Digital Video project. However, there could havebeen more interviews and demonstrations of classroom footage throughout the digitalvideo as explained through the feedback on the 10 questionnaires that have beendistributed on the finalised product for the Creative Media Digital Video. The Creative Media Digital Video had a screen resolution of 720 (width) and 400 (height)where it was filmed in HD quality that made the editing process a lot easier. The effects and transitions that I used for the Creative Media Digital Video advert were thefollowing:ZoomTransition (This effect was used to manipulate the timeline from the startand end point of theimages representing the Cheadle and Marple Sixth FormCollege and the Creative Media course)Audio Effects, NewBlue Noise Reducer (I used this to apply the effect towards thevolume within the background for the Gonzales - Working Together (Boys NoizeDub remix) soundtrack within the Creative Media Digital Video project)
  16. 16. Ben Turner Unit 4, 5 and 62 20/5/13(Evaluation for the Creative Media Digital Video)Audio Effects, Edit Effects, Volume (I used this to adjust the volume level for theGonzales - Working Together (Boys Noize Dub remix) soundtrack within theCreative Media Digital Video project)(All of these effects and transitions helped to enhance the video output of the CreativeMedia Digital Video)The file format that was used for importing the Gonzales – Working Together (Boys NoizeDub Remix) soundtrack is .MP3 (Moving Pictures Experts Group-1 Audio Layer 3) and thefile extension for exporting the Creative Media Digital Video was .FLV (Flash Video File). The images used within the Creative Media Digital Video project were .JPEG (JointPhotographic Experts Group) and .PNG (Portable Network Graphics).Initially, I did a brain-storm of my own and then combined my ideas with my teammate`Shaun Daniels` for the full brain-storm document. I then produced storyboard sketches aspart of a team where me and my teammate `Shaun Daniels created 4 outline designs eachas part of the Creative Media Digital Video project. Later on within the project I didmoodboards where I research image examples of how college promote their adverts andannotated explaining what they are showing and how they could contribute towards theoutput of the Creative Media Digital Video project.See illustrations below…..

  24. 24. Ben Turner Unit 4, 5 and 62 20/5/13(Evaluation for the Creative Media Digital Video)On the whole, I think that I have coped very well in terms of keeping a detailed communication log for everything that was done as part of ateam and with the client for production, pre-production and post-production for the Creative Media Digital Video project. I made sure that allof the tasks were completed by most of the deadlines that were set out by my tutor. However, I was pegged back due to being ill for a fewweeks and with concerns of my teammate `Shaun Daniels` not turning up which affected my obligation towards meeting deadlines. In additionto this, I also kept a detailed diary on the development of the Creative Media Digital Video project.See images below…..

  37. 37. Ben Turner Unit 4, 5 and 62 20/5/13(Evaluation for the Creative Media Digital Video)Overall, I feel that I have been able to quickly adapt towards using the Adobe PremiereElements 10 software application the more I used it throughout developing the CreativeMedia Digital Video project. Whereas, with the operating of cameras it took me a while but Imanaged to gain knowledge of how to setup the structure of the camera, tripod and how towork the zoom in and out effects for recording of the filming for the Creative Media DigitalVideo project.Me and my teammate `Shaun Daniels` made equal contributions towards the workloadthroughout the production and filming for the Creative Media Digital Video project in whichhelped us meet all of the deadlines for Assignment 1 and 2 except from Assignment 3. Imade sure that everything me and my teammate `Shaun Daniels` had done was obtained ina communication log which includes details of client meetings as well.In general, I think that I coped very well with all of the administrative work for the CreativeMedia Digital Video project where I equally contributed towards the planning andproduction for the project. The aspects of the project that I covered were the following:Assignment 1:Client Proposal for ICT Digital VideoClient Brief Report for Digital VideoAssignment 2:Task 1 - Production Schedule for ProjectTask 1i - Timeline for Unit 4-5-62 Assignment 2Task 1ii - safety-risk_assessment_form_dec09Task 2a - Research on understanding your target audienceTask 2b - Questionnaire on the Creative Media BTEC courseTask 2bi - Report on the findings for the Creative Media BTEC courseTask 2bii - Questionnaire Sample 1Task 2biii - Questionnaire Sample 2Task 2biiii - Questionnaire Sample 3Task 2ci - Brainstorm for Creative Media Pre-ProductionTask 2cii - Script for Creative Media AdvertTask 2ciii - Shot-Log for the ICT Creative Media Digital VideoTask 2ciiii - Moodboards for the Creative Media Digital Video ProjectTask 3a - Team ProposalTask 3b - Team Proposal PresentationTask 4i - Short report on the Team Proposal PresentationTask 4ii - Agenda - Creative Media Digital Video Production MeetingTask 4iii - Minutes - Creative Media Digital Video Production MeetingTask 5 - Assets table for the ICT-Creative Media Digital Video
  38. 38. Ben Turner Unit 4, 5 and 62 20/5/13(Evaluation for the Creative Media Digital Video)Task 6 - Examples of Filming the Cheadle and Marple Sixth Form CollegeAssignment 3:Task 1 - Diary for the development of the ICT Creative Media Digital VideoTask 1ii - Screen Printing and Explaining the workspace of the Creative MediaDigital Video ProjectTask 2i - Importing the Digital Video content for the Creative Media projectTask 2ii - Log of the tools and features used for the Creative Media ProjectTask 2iii - Editing the digital video for the Creative Media projectTask 4i – Questionnaire on the finished Creative Media Digital Video projectTask 4ii - Agenda - Creative Media Digital Video End of Project MeetingTask 4ii - Minutes - Creative Media Digital Video End of Project Meeting(This document as explained in the header above)On the whole, the client’s most enjoyable aspect about the Creative Media Digital Video wasshowing students that are doing the course. However, the sound levels were too erraticwhere it was up and down throughout the digital video. Volume was too low for thespeaking and too high for the music. The end transition could be more smoother where itsuddenly stops then the credits appear after an interval.Almost all of the assets that have been used for the Creative Media Digital Video projectwere ready-made by me in which I did not have to seek permission for usage of theresources for the project. I also did not have to stick to any guidelines by a regulating bodyand pay for any of the camera and computer software facilities due to it being providedinternally within Cheadle and Marple Sixth Form College.I have kept in touch with my teammate `Shaun Daniels`through face to face, focus groupand email communication methods but however it was difficult to get into direct contactwith my teammate due to not having a mobile phone number from my teammate so that Icould send SMS text message or make a phone call.I did have follow up discussions with the client on the progression of the Creative MediaDigital Video project where he felt happy with the status of the project and I was able tomeet most of the deadlines.Even though I worked well with `Shaun Daniels` I felt I could have been better, however dueto the lack of availability of my teammate `Shaun Daniels` it was testing at times.Nevertheless, when he did turn up nearly all of the work has been completed by himaccordingly to what the client has asked for me and him to do as a team. On the whole, Ithink that the Creative Media Digital Video project does meet all of the criteria that were setout initially by the client.

Ben Turner Unit 4, 5 and 62 20/5/13(Evaluation for the Creative Media Digital Video)As a whole, I do think that I managed to achieve the promotion of the Creative Media BTECcourse within Cheadle and Marple Sixth Form College as it showed an interview with myteammate `Shaun Daniels`, demonstration of the Adobe Dreamweaver software package, the tutor supporting a student in class and reference to how you can get more informationon the course. The final product of the Creative Media Digital Video has changed quite a lot from the initialideas and development as there were 8 scenes overall which were the following:Scene 1: Introduction to the College Course SubjectScene 2: Introducing the ICT CentreScene 3: The Scope of the Creative Media courseScene 4: Interview with student Shaun DanielsScene 5: Describing and Explaining the ICT CentreScene 6: Scope of the CO1 Room within the ICT CentreScene 7: Adobe Dreamweaver CS5Scene 7: Adobe Fireworks CS5Scene 8: Outline of Software Applications for Creative MediaScene 8: Adobe Photoshop CS5Scene 8: Adobe Flash Professional CS5Scene 8: Adobe InDesign CS5Scene 8: Adobe Soundbooth Part 1Scene 8: Adobe Soundbooth Part 2The total timescale for the Creative Media Digital Video was around 5 to 6 minutes. But theclient had asked me to narrow it down to about 2 or 3 minutes so therefore, I took outscenes 2, 3, 5, 6, 7 and 8 in order to constrict the timescale of the digital video and edited allof the remaining scenes down to about 2 minutes.Overall, I do feel that I managed to stick to most of the deadlines and timings of the CreativeMedia Digital Video project. However, due to time off college for a few weeks for being ill itproved very challenging when it came towards meeting every deadline that had been setout by the tutor.I do think that I can improve on learning how to effectively combine the sound and speakinglevels for the Creative Media Digital Video project and maintain consistent transitions thathave been used throughout all of the scenes within the digital video.

Ben Turner Unit 4, 5 and 62 20/5/13(Evaluation for the Creative Media Digital Video)On the whole, I do feel that I have met all of the requirements that have been set out by theclient before the project took place. The Creative Media Digital Video does meet some ofthe original intentions throughout the production and filming process although I could haveadjusted the volume control of the Gonzales - Working Together (Boys Noize Dubremix)soundtrack. I do feel that liaisons with the client could have been more accessible ifmy teammate `Shaun Daniels` would have attended sessions so that we can hold theproduction meetings with the agenda and minutes documents.I did liaise with my client in terms of keeping up-to-date with how the Creative Media DigitalVideo project was progressing and he was generally happy with everything that I have doneso far. However, due to being of ill and having to see the doctors did make it very difficult totry and complete everything by the deadlines that had been set out by the tutor.Nevertheless, I did complete all of the individual tasks for the Creative Media Digital Videoproject accordingly to the dates that have been set out by the tutor.
