Don't Look Back Film Title Explained
1.
2. TITLE
Our title of our film, 'Don't look back' is linked more to the narrative of the
film as apposed to the genre. This is unconventional of the motor sport
genre as many films link the title to the genre, for example 'Rush' has
connotations of speed.
The way the title comes onto the screen is conventional of the genre; the
film fades to black and the title comes on to the screen from the sides
as a car would do.
3. CREDITIS
Our credits are at the beginning of the opening when we are trying to set a
sad, atmospheric tone which in itself is unconventional of the motor
sport genre so our credits are also unconventional. They fade on and
off of the screen where as usually in the motor sport genre they are fast
paced.
4. CHARACTERS
We have focused on one character in our opening; the protagonist. As
this is the only character in our opening and is featured in the
foreground in a majority of the shots, we decided that we should have a
conventional protagonist. This led us to cast a male, we introduced the
character with medium shots and close ups which represented him as
important.
5. SETTINGS
We had two locations we were able to shoot at, these were Silverstone race
track, the stands and school. Both of which are conventional locations for
the motor sport genre, we were only able to film here as our group lives a
long way from each other so could not meet up out side of school hours.
These locations are similar to ones shown in the film 'Senna', we even have a
shot similar to this one where the protagonist is looking from the side of the
track, possibly the stands where ours is filmed, looking onto the tack.
If we had unlimited access to the track we would have filmed on the straight
where the starting lights are.
6. CAMERA WORK
After watching the opening to the films 'rush' and 'need for speed'', we
decided that our film should have a range of establishing shots at the
beginning to create a sad, atmospheric tone. This is seen here at the
start of 'rush'.
We also had CUs where the protagonist was central to the to introduce him
as the most important character
7. COSTUME
We used two costumes in our opening, the main one being the race suit
with the helmet which is conventional iconography in a motor sport
film, shown in the opening of the film 'rush'.
We also had the unconventional costume of the white t-shirt and bandage.
This was to subvert the archetype of the race driver.
