CONVENTIONS
TITLE SEQUENCES
In film openings there isn't a clear order of titles that they should go in but there is a idea, all films can
differ slightly depending on how known/famous the actors, director, writer etc are. If they are famous
then their name will be shown before the film title rather than after this is because they would
interest the audience and make them pay attention. Some title sequences also include director of
      photography and executive producer.

The conventional order (taken from The Stepfather): The order of our film:
Production Company Ident Production Company Ident

Executive Producer

We followed some aspects of the conventional title sequence but used other titles such as written
by and directed by as well. Our film title comes at the end of our opening, which is quite
unconventional, because as a group we decided it looked better at the end and suited the mood
of the opening better than when it was towards the beginning of the opening. We didn’t want
to ruin the tension of the opening with the title being at the beginning and instead we thought
it would be a good place to end at.
STRUCTURE OF OPENINGS
Openings have three main structures which are discrete title sequences, narrative openings and
credits over a black screen. Discrete title sequences are sequences that are heavily edited and
very stylised whilst narrative openings set the location and the scene with titles throughout and
credits over a black screen just show the credits on a black screen. These are the most
conventional structures of openings that are seen throughout the different genres.

Our opening sequence is conventional as we followed the structure of a narrative opening setting up
the story line, introducing the character and setting up the location. We used this structure as
we thought that it was one that would allow us to be creative and create an interesting opening
that would appeal to our target audience and set up a good story line.
SIMILARITIES – FOLLOWING CONVENTIONS
We followed conventions that other thriller films had, we got ideas from films such as The Omen,
The Shining but our main inspiration was Halloween. All these films had different micro-
elements that we went along with for example POV shots, tracking, props and even costume.

Our Tracking Shot VS Halloween Tracking Shot
Low On Ground VS Higher Up

Our Knife Shot VS Halloween Knife Shot
                                                                   Close Up VS Medium Shot

Our POV Shot VS Halloween POV Shot
Blurry VS Mask – Eye Holes
