3. Pre-Production: Visual Planning
• This section is concerned with the visual planning of your music video
• You should use this section to develop the sequencing or your video,
establish the relationship between the visuals and the track itself and
create a structure for you to follow when filming
• It is important that you ‘pre-visualise’ the video before you make it; it
will make filming and production a more streamlined process
• The following tasks are part of your visual planning
• Pre-visualisation and concept boards
• Storyboarding
• Shot list
4. Pre-visualisation/Concept Boards
• Tool for exploring the direction and visuals
• Provides inspiration and information for the “look & feel”
• Presents key moments in your video
• A means to sketch/plan ideas
• Information on colour/lighting
• Defining the “mise-en-scene”
• Include as much here as you like, but keep it relevant to the
production, the following slides have been left blank for you to
approach in your own way, add more as you need to
• Extension suggestion: edit a short sequence of clips that have
inspired or influenced your video [similar to this:

5. Shot list:
• Extreme long shot
• Long shot
• Establishing shot
• Medium shot
• Close up
• Over the shoulder
• Worms view
• Birds eye view
• Tilted shot
I will attempt to include
most of these shots in
my video, during
production I will have a
shot list that I can tick
off when I’ve recorded
each shot.
Different shots will be
used for different parts
of the song, for example
close up shots will be
used for parts of the
video that I want the
audience to focus on.
And for close ups like a
clip of someone’s eye,
which would have to be
close up shot.
The Look & Feel
The look and feel of my video takes inspiration from all indie
rock music videos. Using a grunge setting with dark/damp
colours. The style of the video won’t be like pop music videos
with bright colours. It also wont be in idyllic settings it will be
in relatable, low budget settings. Indie rock bands presents
themselves as having no cares and just having fun with friends
not caring about the fame so the video will represent normal
lives. I got inspiration for parts of the video from a music video
I analysed, Habits by Trove Lo, it is based on a girls night out
and all the scenes are created realistically and they use the
night to film it which gives the video a feeling of freedom and
mystery.
Key moments
In my video the key moments will be the line ‘Because if I get time, I'd just regret most shit’ and for this
scene I will have a montage of 1 second clips of the process of someone going out on a night out, then as
the night goes on they make more mistakes. I think if I do this right then it can look very effective. The
next key moment in my video is the chorus. The chorus has descriptive lyrics
‘From every hangover my head feels
To every ex I didn't treat right
To every Monday I called in sick
To every argument I let slide’
So they are easy to create scenes for, as I can film people having an argument calling in sick, etc. For these
scenes I’ll be using a range of shots for these scenes, e.g. the ones in the shot list.
Color and lighting
The color and lighting in my video
will be dull, this is because in the
places I’m filming the setting are
dark, and the timings I plan on
filming are after 4pm and therefore
will be dark. I could change the
settings on the camera to make it
brighter however to fit in with the
stereotypes of my genre I need to
stay with a dark, grunge setting.
Mise-en-scene
For my video I want to plan my settings very carefully as I think the final touches in the settings will make
the video look more professional.
Pre-visualization/Concept Boards
6. Structural breakdown – 1/3
Section [e.g. verse,
chorus, bridge, etc]
Approx
duration
What happens, visual elements, shots Notes of technical aspects/requirements
Intro 18
seconds
For the beginning I want to have a establishing shot,
of a view or a sunset to set the beginning of the
video. A sun rising would be to represent the
beginning of the song, however I think if I used a
atmospheric setting and then had two characters in
the scene as silhouettes moving around. The camera
would follow the characters and they would be
acting unaware of the camera.
This would last from the introduction until ‘Maybe I
don't mind, just getting high in mine’
This shot will be an establishing shot, to set the
tone of the video. I will also include medium and
close up shots of the same scene for different
angles.
I was thinking of including special effects where I
would speed up the clips so it would look like a
time lapse.
First verse 10
seconds
From ‘Shouting over music with a friend who's like a
brother’ the scene would carry on in the same
setting as the introduction for the song.
The scene would be a medium/long shot and would
be off to people sat laughing and then singing along
the lyrics to a song.
The camera would be stand for these scenes to
focus on the characters.
First verse 10
seconds
The scene would change from the outside scene to
the character in her room getting ready for a night
out. For the whole line ‘Because if I get time, I'd just
regret most shit’ I’m going to film the process of
someone getting ready, then going out, ten coming
home on a night out. It’ll start by having her put on
lipstick with a close up shot. Followed by a picture
putting lipstick on , then a medium shot of someone
getting into a car, then multiple short shots of her
doing shots and then getting into a fight to coincide
with the ‘regret more shit’ line.
7. Structural breakdown – 2/3
Section [e.g. verse,
chorus, bridge, etc]
Approx
duration
What happens, visual elements, shots Notes of technical aspects/requirements
Chorus 7 seconds ‘From every hangover my head feels’
It will start with a shot of someone sitting up in bed
with cloths all around them and empty bottles to
create an idea to the audience of what she had done
the night before. She’ll wake up with smudge makeup
and holding her head like she has a really bad
hangover. The scene will start with a long shot and
then move to a medium shot to zoom in on her.
Chorus 7 seconds ‘For every ex I didn’t treat right’
For this line I’m going to film a phone and have a
staged argument with messages from her boyfriend
texting about things that happened last night, for
example ‘ you were all over him last night’ and the
the response being half hearted and uninterested.
Chorus 7 seconds ‘For every Monday I called in sick’
I’m going to have an over the head shot of her
relaxed in her dressing gown painting her nails and
watching tv, clearly relaxing with the phone in her
hand, the the shot will turn so we can see her miming
the words ‘ I’m so sorry I cant come in today’
8. Structural breakdown – 3/3
Section [e.g. verse,
chorus, bridge, etc]
Approx
duration
What happens, visual elements, shots Notes of technical aspects/requirements
Chorus 7 seconds ‘To every argument I let slide’
I’d have her disengaged in the conversation and not
listening while the other person was getting more
and more annoyed.
Chorus 15
seconds
‘Christ I ain’t ever going back to thinking straight
twiceit brung me down but it's the last time ’ I’m
going to be in an open setting, somewhere in the
countryside and have the camera spin around her
then with the lyrics ‘straight’ the camera will stop on
herI’d use a medium shot for this whole scene as I
think a close up would be too intense and a long shot
wouldn’t be close enough.
‘Twice, it brung me down but it's the last time’
Then the camera will spin the other way.
Second verse 6 seconds ‘Maybe I'll grow tired of you bitching all the time’
Have a medium shot of two people walking down a
street, but the camera is going to be in front of them
and moving with them as they walk. One person will
be talking to together, in a obviously gossipy way.
And the other will be walking and ignoring her rolling
her eyes and looking clearly bored.
9. Structural breakdown – 4/3
Section [e.g. verse,
chorus, bridge, etc]
Approx
duration
What happens, visual elements, shots Notes of technical aspects/requirements
Second verse 8 seconds ‘cause when you love the way your living, it get’s
hard to fret about much’
With a video of two friends just laughing and
enjoying themselves.
For this I want to try and use
silhouettes instead of people to
introduce a new element.
Chorus 10 seconds ‘Because if I got time I'd just regret most shit’ For
this I’m going to use the same scenes that were
used in the first verse, the process of a night out.
However this time I’m going to include more shots
and have the existing ones for less time.
Having the camera focus blurry to
show the
Chorus 28 seconds ‘From every hangover my head feels
To every ex I didn't treat right
To every Monday I called in sick
To every argument I let slide’
For this section I’ll use the same clips that I used
earlier for these lines but this time to make it
more interesting I’m going to have the scenes
played faster and in reverse. So the chorus isn’t
repetitive but still follows the lyrics.
For example, When the girl leans up out of bed
instead she’ll be falling back into the bed.
10. Structural breakdown – 5/3
Section [e.g. verse,
chorus, bridge, etc]
Approx
duration
What happens, visual elements, shots Notes of technical aspects/requirements
Chorus 15 seconds ‘Christ, I ain't ever going back to thinking
straight twice
Twice, it brung me down but it's the last time’
The camera will spin around faster then the first
time. Then for the second half of the line
Chorus 15 seconds The lines ‘Christ, I ain't ever going back to
thinking straight twice
Twice, it brung me down but it's the last time’
Are repeated and for these I’m going to include
clips from all the different scenes from the
video.
