2. PRODUCTION LOG:
GUIDANCE
• This document is for you to track the progress of your
production – filming, editing and post-production.
• This is so you can track what you did and how you did it,
explaining and amendments and changes you made and
tracking the decisions that have shaped the practical
creation of your music video.
• The more detail you include about how you made your music
video, the better. The document is broken down in to two
sections, Filming and Editing, each of these is then made of
specific elements that occur in both.
• For each slide there is a prompt detailing what you should
include, delete the prompt after you have complete the slide.
• Remember, images often show what you’ve done more
effectively than words. Use text to explain an illustration.
3. FILMING
Explain what worked and didn’t work about your filming and how you
managed this covering the following areas:
• Technical – using the cameras and any technical equipment; this could
be how you did your lip sync, used the green screen, dealt with problems
with batteries, etc
• Logistical – did your locations work? Did you have any access
problems? Did it rain?
• Personnel – how were your cast/crew? Did anyone let you down? How
did you manage this?
• Planning – did your planning help? Do you think it could have worked
better? How?
• Next steps – do you need to re-film? Film more? Have you changed your
video? How/why?
*If you make any drastic changes to your video you MUST
add this to your planning documentation and state how and
why this has happened
4. TECHNICAL
Making the lip sync was fairly easy and looked good, I had most of the words memorized and
for anything I didn't do I would just fully cover my mouth with the microphone so I could
pretend I knew the lyrics, this looked fine as most of the time I was lip syncing. Some of the
lip syncing didn't look as good as others, I realized afterwards that you really need to open
your mouth excessively to make it look like your shouting the words, near the start I am not
doing that and it just looks slightly off.
I did not end up using a green screen as I thought it wouldn't be useful but on reflection I wish
I had used one as there are some things I could have used it for, mainly putting It behind the
band playing to make it seem as though they are laying somewhere else.
One issue was batteries, I booked out 2 batteries and a charger, I accidentally left one battery
in the camera while It was off and the next time I turned it on the battery was empty, I tried to
charge it only to realize the charger I was given was a charger for different kinds of batteries
and the ones I had didn't fit, this left me with one battery to film everything and therefor meant
a lot of it was rushed as I was worried it would run out before I finished filming.
Another issue I had was I booked out a light to put on the camera as I planned on filming in
the dark, however I overestimated how good the light was and by the time it was getting very
dark the light didn't do much at all, this was a big issue as when we finished filming the story I
planned on then filming all of the band playing in the dark but it was too dark to actually see
anything in the camera and what could be seen was too grainy, because of this I had to use
my backup plan and film In the music room at college.
5. LOGISTICAL
My original plan was to film in a different location entirely and I did most of my main
planning on this location, but I found out a week before filming that that location was no
longer useable and had to use my backup location, which was my local graveyard, it
was perfect to film in as no one goes in there, all the headstones are very old and I
thought It was well lit, (turns out there are lots of lights outside and none inside so I was
wrong).
No real access it is a public space, to cover myself I asked a police officer near it (as it
is next to a police station) and he said yeah you can do whatever in there there's no
rules against that, so access was not a problem.
The location worked the way I wanted it too and gave off a good horror vibe while still
being nice to look, very aesthetically pleasing. There is also a small church in the
middle that is pretty damaged and hasn't been used in some time, this worked well in
the music video because it broke it up from just having all graveyard and having a bit of
building
One issue we had was how quickly it got dark, this worked well for the video as you can
see the sky get darker as it goes on, but it didn't help when we couldn't film because it
was that dark by the end. Another slight problem was that it was very lightly raining, not
raining enough to show I the video or look good, just enough to be annoying and we
had to put an umbrella on the camera to make sure it was safe. I would of liked for it to
rain more in the video as it would fit into the heavy metal music video and also the
horror elements
6. PERSONNEL
My cast where fairly useful, none of us can really act so it was a struggle to make the story
look actually real, for Alex (the killer) we ended up covering half his face as he just couldn't
manage to keep an aggressive face that a murderer would have. Having said that both of them
did a good job and it is clear to see one is playing a killer and one is playing the injured victim.
I used different people for the band, me as the lead singer and 2 of my friends as the drummer
and guitarist, this wasn't good as I cannot sing and had never lip sync before so this was my
first time, one of the people in the video had never played an instrument before and had to
make it look like her could actually play guitar in a heavy metal video which is even harder
than playing guitar normally. Luckily the third member of the band could play multiple
instruments which was very useful as he could make it look like a real performance, the only
issue with this was he couldn't keep a straight face either so there was no real acting and both
of them looked like they weren't into it at all.
One good thing about having a member who could play guitar was that we got him to learn the
basics of the one minute long guitar solo, he played this and it actually looked very good in
final with a lot of filters.
The biggest issue with my crew was that one of them told me he had a drum set and also a
bass guitar, I also had an electric guitar so with this combined we could have a full band set in
the grave yard, my other friend who can drive and has a car said he would collect the
instruments and bring them there, this was the original plan and sounded great until the day
before when the friend with the instruments decides to tell us he no longer has them. Even
though for the past 3 weeks whenever I had asked him he was dead set that he had them, this
was a set back but I ended up not being able to form any band performance because of the
light anyway so it all ended okay, it would have just looked a lot nicer if that went to plan.
7. PLANNING
My planning ended up helping a lot, my story boards where my main point of reference
throughout filming and I tried to stick to them as much as I could when filming. The
story board I made was set in the scrap yard, my original location, as I have said I ended
up not sing this location so I had to slightly change things I the story board but I kept
the story completely they same, person wakes up on car injured, person wonders
around, realizes they have been taken, we then see antagonist (the murderer), murderer
is walking around, victim is now trying to get out, realizes they cant, murderer sees his
victim is up and escaping, victim speeds up there pace, murderer catches victim,
murderer kills victim, cinematic shot of the 2 of them as music plays out.
My shot list also proved helpful but I wish I stuck to what I wrote down, I had an idea for
everything down and I got most of the shots I needed for the story, it was when it came
to filming the live performance I had issues, my group where sick of recording after we
had completed the first run through so when I told them I wanted to repeat that 10 times
from different angles they where not compliant. This meant I did not get the shots I had
on my shot list which I planned on cutting up into very small slips and having rapid
camera changes while the band where playing, which is common in metal videos.
In conclusion my planning was extremely useful I wish I just stuck to what I wrote down
more.
8. NEXT STEPS – DO YOU NEED TO RE-
FILM? FILM MORE? HAVE YOU CHANGED
YOUR VIDEO? HOW/WHY?
I did not have to re-film anything, however my filming was done across
multiple days.
I had to change my video a few times, my first was changing to my backup
location, I had to do this because my original location was not the way I
remembered it being before, the location was a scrap yard near where I live,
it used to be very open and full of interesting things like a full broken plane
etc. however when I went to see if it was still the same before filming I found
out it was completely different and now no one was allowed in. Because of
this I could not use it and had to resort to my second location which
honestly was a lot easier as it was so close to my house.
9. EDITING
• Record your edit progress, decisions, problems, etc. in
this section
• Include screenshots with annotations, statements, etc.
• Try to explain how you worked and justify why you chose
to work the way you did.
• Follow the structure and what to include on each slide as
this is necessary for evidence for assessment

ASSEMBLY EDIT
When starting to edit the
video I first laid out all of
the story clips I had, once
they where out I moved
them making spaces for
the band to play, this was
a good way to do it for me
as I could visualize how
the whole thing would
look by only putting half
of the clips down and not
confusing myself
Once I had something solid I added all of my other clips of the band playing,
this was a lot easier now as all I had to do was lay the 5 minute clip of us
performing the full song and cut parts out of it and put them in the gaps, this
worked well and I was able to get a full run through of my video. I also had
then broke up some clips and put them in between other clips if they where too
long
15. LIP SYNC
Trying to sync my lip sync with the
actual song was quite easy but
very time consuming, I had to drag
out the clip so that it was showing
a small time frame, once I could
move the clip by milliseconds I had
to then sync the music with my
mouth, for this I tried to find one
distinct word in each verse/chorus I
then replayed that word over and
over again while adjusting the
video so that the exact millisecond
my mouth was open enough to
produce the sound the word would
also be in the song. I though I did
this well and all of the reviews I got
on my video agreed saying the lip
sync was very good.
16. EDITING –
REFINEMENT
Show and explain how you have refined and improved your initial
sequence edit my initial sequence consisted of lots of very long
clips that where hardly edited, my finished product on the other
hand was built up of lots of smaller highly edited clips. As you can
see below every line is the start of a new clip, some of these clips
are the same thing but cut up as each cut has a different colour or
something like that
One clip cut up a lot
17. EDITING –
COLOUR CORRECTION/SFX
Show and explain your colour correction process/effects
process – use staged screenshots to show each part of the
process and the effect. Explain why you chose to do this
