2. Pre-Production: Visual Planning
• This section is concerned with the visual planning of your music video
• You should use this section to develop the sequencing or your video,
establish the relationship between the visuals and the track itself and
create a structure for you to follow when filming
• It is important that you ‘pre-visualise’ the video before you make it; it
will make filming and production a more streamlined process
• The following tasks are part of your visual planning
• Pre-visualisation and concept boards
• Storyboarding
• Shot list
3. Pre-visualization/Concept Boards
• Tool for exploring the direction and visuals
• Provides inspiration and information for the “look & feel”
• Presents key moments in your video
• A means to sketch/plan ideas
• Information on colour/lighting
• Defining the “mise-en-scene”
• Include as much here as you like, but keep it relevant to the production, the
following slides have been left blank for you to approach in your own way,
add more as you need to
• Extension suggestion: edit a short sequence of clips that have inspired or
influenced your video [similar to this: http://io9.com/5941145/this-

movie]
5. Structural breakdown
•Breakdown your track into it basic sections [e.g. intro, verse,
chorus, verse, etc.] and apply broad visual ideas to each section
•You can use this as the master template for your production,
then add more shots to each section when you develop your
full visual plan
6. Structural Breakdown – 1/2
Section Length What happens Notes of technical aspects
Intro 45
seconds
Mid shot of me in a superhero landingpose while a
video of me battlingsome members of the society
playsaboveme until the first beat of the song.
During the starting beat of the song, the camera
changes shots to the beat of the song by fading to
black and back to me from different angles.
Camera with tripod to keep it steady during
each shot, I will probablyneed a flat terrain
like a wide open field as it will be easier to
record each angle and shot with the tripod. I
might use a green screen to help create the
close up shots.
1st
Verse
30
seconds
During the transitionbetween the intro and the
first verse, I will slowly rise up with the camera
changing angles before the lyrics start, which starts
my dance routinefor the first verse.
No notes of technical
aspects
1st
Chorus
50
seconds
I will continuemy dance routine while the scenery
changes to something different to show the
audience that the evil society control almost every
single area in the world
No notes of technical
aspects
Musical
section
7 seconds I will perform a different dance while changing the
camera angle, similarly to the beginning of the
video.
No notes of technical
aspects
7. Structural Breakdown – 2/2
Section Length What happens Notes of technical aspects
2nd
verse
27
seconds
I will perform a different dance routine that
references the lyrics in the song like how "it's
getting colder every day"
No notes of technical
aspects
2nd
Chorus
1 minute I will repeat the same dance routine from the first
chorus to keep everything similar and copy how
choruses are done; either the exact same or very
similar.
No notes of technical
aspects
Bridge 1 minute I will add some effects so the video looks like I am
rising into the air and slowly becoming frozen as
"break the ice" is repeated. Before the "break the
ice" I will add me singing a section of the bridge,
using some special effects that make me look
transparent because I want to make the audience
see me above
I will need either a
green screen or need
some wire to raise me
in the air.
Finale 50
seconds
At the very end of the song I will perform a small
bow, similar to one of the characters from the
Dragon Ball franchise, as the camera slowly pans
No notes of technical
aspects
8. Storyboarding
• Your storyboard should bring your idea to life
• Provide an idea of the sequencing of you video
• Provides a basis for production
• Suggested online storyboard creators are:
• http://www.pixton.com [very complicated]
• http://www.storyjumper.com [allows you to insert your own images]
• Alternatively, hand draw or photographyour storyboard and scan or
copy to insert it onto your slides
• There are lots of tips collected together on Blackboard!
9. The video will start with me in a
super hero landing pose as the
camera changes angles and shots to
the beat of the song.
As the beat of the song continues, I will slowly rise
while the camera changes angles and shots with
fades to black and back to me from different views.
During the musical section in the middle of the
song, I will create the effects that show that I
am rising into the air; during the "break the
ice" section, I will create the effects that make
it look like I am being trapped in ice.
Once the first verse of the
song starts, I will start my
dance routine for the
verse and the song.
Before the end of the "break the ice"
section, I will drop to the ground and
break the ice and then start my dance
routine again.
By the end of the song, I
will perform a slow bow
as the camera pans back
slowly and soon fades to
black to finish the video.
10. Shot List
•Your shot list should contain the sequential breakdown of
what you need to shoot for your video – it is both a creative
tool for planning and practical tool for filming
•It should work in partnership with your storyboard
•It will be your working document when you film
•It should contain the shot number, scene number, shot
description, framing and action you will see
•It should also have information on performers in the scene
and other props, etc.
•Shot list template is on Blackboard in the pre-production
folder
11. • Equipment I plan on using: Camera
and tripod
• First Shot: the first shot will be a mid
shot so that the audience can clearly
see me in the shot, the audience will
just see me in a super hero landing
pose while videos of me fighting
members of the evil society is played
above me to show that they are my
memories and thoughts
• Second Shot: the second shot will be
a mix of close up shots and different
angles, the audience will see
different parts of me as I slowly start
to rise to show that I am getting
ready to break the ice
• Third Shot: the third shot will be a
mid shot, far enough so the
audience can see all of me but not
too far so that there is too much
of the setting; during my dance
routine, I might change the
camera angle to the beat of the
song
• Fourth Shot: the fourth shot will
be a mix of close ups and mid
shots that goes the same way as
the beat of the chorus, the
audience will see different sides
of me as I perform my dance
routine
12. Production Group Info
Names Roles
Ani Tang Camera woman
Will Young Member of the evil society
Myself Main character
13. Location Information
• Information and images of your location[s] for filming
• You should have address details, clearance/permissions for filming, recce
photos and floorplans [including camera, equipment and cast/crew layouts]
• Where possible, have a plan B fallback location option
• Assess each location for any issues and suggest solutions
Most of my recording will be done in York Race course during the weekend
on week 4- I will need a camera and a tripod
Some of my recording will be done in the studio in York College on
Wednesday 30th January- I will need a camera and a tripod
I will also take some images of me in my superhero pose from different
angles just outside college grounds
