2. GUIDANCE
This template PowerPoint presentation includes all the
relevant elements you need to cover in your Music Video
Assignment
It is suggested you save this PP in a different name and
share it with your group so you always have a copy – some
sections require you to delete the information on the slide
and replace with your own work
Add more pages to each section where necessary [you
should be doing this!]
Add visuals as you see necessary
This document will be added to as you progress through the
pre-production phase.
Delete this slide when complete
4. RESEARCH & IDEA
GENERATION
Select a song/track that you like [or don’t like!]
Generate three ideas for music videos employing styles,
techniques and conventions that we have looked at in
previous sessions. Explore how you could interpret the
song differently using different methods
You can add any extra info you think is relevant, images,
mind maps, etc
For quick mind maps you could use bubbl.us to generate
these
5. RESEARCH
Watch a selection of videos to get your ideas started,
make note of a minimum of 5 – add extra slides,
screenshot the video and in bullet point note down info
in terms of camera, editing, art design, performance, etc
and how this might link to your production
Hint!
You’ve already done this in
your case study, so you can
summarise that here where
relevant
6. Deftones
• Always has them playing
• Derelict graffitied buildings
• Lots of filters, blur, fast moving shots
• Usually a lot of people in the videos with exception to “my own
summer”(top left)

7. DEFTONES
• Shot length correlates with speed of music
• Filmed in very urban areas
• Usually in abandoned buildings or graffiti covered places
• Hand filmed footage, no tripod , camera isn't steady
• Terrible lighting with lots of color filters
• No real story
• Focus on the band playing
• Lots of shots on the surroundings
• Lots of grain and old fashioned film camera filters
• Lots of low angle shots
• Fish eye shots showing the full room from the doorway
• Clothing: streetwear, breaded hair, big chains, tattoos
• Lots of background people
• No CGI
8. Korn
• Half story half band performing
• Lots of focus on clothes, similar to deftones, street clothes
• Lots of CGI
• Short length shots as the music is a lot faster pace
• Filmed in the streets or in places made for the music videos, in “got
the life” they do a performance on a stage in a building with the
song name written on the wall behind them.
• Very hard to make out what's happening in some videos usually
because of lighting and filters
• All footage done with tripods and other equipment
• Less pountless shots
9. POTENTIAL SONGS
Bromton cocktail - Avenged sevenfold
My own summer – Deftones
Got the life – Korn
Looking down the barrel of today – Hatebreed
Scream – Avenged sevenfold
10. POTENTIAL TECHNIQUES
• Heavy filters
• Lots of grain
• Make it look as though it’s a very old video
• Moving shots
• Fast paced shots
• Half story half performance
• Lip syncing
• Variety of angles
• Try different lenses
11. CONVENTIONS YOU PLAN TO
USE
Fast paced shots
Footage of the band playing
Spooky narrative mixed in
Clothing style
Dark ambience
Lots of filters
Many angles
Strange angles, low shots,
Mise en scene
13. SUMMARY
5 opportunities of your ideas
Fits genre conventions
Will look like an actual music video rather than a college
video
Low cost but still looks professional
Lots of room to edit in different ways, getting 100s of
clips gives me the freedom to cover them in a lot of
filters
Easy story to get across
14. SUMMARY
5 restrictions to your ideas
I need people to act like the band, need those people to
all be free at the same time etc.
I need instruments
The locations could have changed since I last saw them
I will need to spend a lot of time filming to get the lip
sinc and also to get lots of shots to switch between
I have to rely on my friends acting well and someone
filming I
15. FINAL IDEA –
ARTIST/TITLE/INFOName of track / name of artist. Scream – avenged sevenfold
Brief biographical background
From California the band formed in 1999, the original band members
where, M. Shadows (vocals), Zacky Vengeance (guitar), Synyster Gates
(guitar), the Reverend (drums), and Johnny Christ (bass), in 2009 Jimmy
"The Rev" Sullivan passed away at the age of 28,before one of their
albums they got a replacement drummer Mike Portnoy, They swapped
the drummer in 2013 as well and that was their last change. The band
has 10 albums with their first “sounding the seventh trumpet” being
released in 2002 and their most recent album “the stage (deluxe
edition)” being released in 2017. The song I have chosen is from their
4th album released in 2007. The band has gained a lot of popularity
since its first album and has even made cameos in big name video
games like call of duty.

Genre info. Heavy metal, genre of rock music that includes a group of
related styles that are intense, virtuosic, and powerful. Driven by the
aggressive sounds of the distorted electric guitar, heavy metal is
arguably the most commercially successful genre of rock music.
16. FINAL IDEA – TRACK
SUMMARY
Summary/analysis of track
[consider meaning, content,
duration, pace and style of th
Caught up in this madness too blind to see
Woke animal feelings in me
Took over my sense and I lost control
I'll taste your blood tonight
You know I make you wanna scream
You know I make you wanna run from me baby
But now it's too late you've wasted all your time
Relax while you're closing your eyes to me
So warm as I'm setting you free
With your arms by your side there's no struggling
Pleasure's all mine this time
You know I make you wanna scream
You know I make you wanna run from me baby
But now it's too late you've wasted all your time
Cherishing, those feelings pleasuring
Cover me, unwanted clemency
Scream till there's silence
Scream while there's life left, vanishing
Scream from the pleasure, unmask your desire
Perishing
We've all had a time where we've lost control
We've all had our time to grow
I'm hoping I'm wrong but I know I'm right
I'll hunt again one night
Verse 1 at the start of
the song he realizes he
wants to kill someone
and says he’s lost
control
Chorus, the chorus shows
he's picked his target and
he wants to hear them
scream, he also tells them
they cant get away
Verse 2 some people had suspicions that this part
signifies he's caught the person and is going to rape
them but the band confirmed that was not the
intention he just wants to them, the no struggling is
just confirming he's caught them
Chorus 2
Chorus 2 extended the extension of the chorus
shows he has a sexual thing for killing people and
he is so deluded that he thinks his victim should be
getting pleasure from being killed
Verse 3 this is him trying to rationalize his decisions
by saying everyone loses control, and he will doo it
again
17. You know I make you wanna scream
You know I make you wanna run from me baby
But now it's too late you've wasted all your
time
Cherishing, those feelings pleasuring
Cover me, unwanted clemency
Scream till there's silence
Scream while there's life left, vanishing
Scream from the pleasure, unmask your desire
Perishing
Some live repressing their instinctive feelings
Protest the way we're built don't point the
blame on me
Scream, scream, scream the way you would
If I ravaged your body
Scream, scream, scream the way you would
If I ravaged your mind
Cherishing, those feelings pleasuring
Cover me, unwanted clemency
Scream till there's silence
Scream while there's life left, vanishing
Scream from the pleasure, unmask your desire
Perishing
Chorus and extended chorus 3
Verse 4 again he is rationalizing what he is doing
saying that they could do the same but they aren't
so don’t blame him
Verse 5 this is him fully losing his mind and
getting his prey, he is dead set that the person he
is killing should be loving it mentally and
physically
Chorus extension 4
18. FINAL IDEA – YOUR IDEA
Your creative concept/video synopsis [describe your interpretation, use of
imagery or narrative, genre conventions, etc]
My final idea is to start my video with someone someone waking up on a broken
car in a scrap yard, the music at the start of the song I have chosen (scream –
avenged sevenfold) starts slow which will go well with some slow opening shots
of a band member on a car, as the music goes on he will begin to get off the car,
this will cut to the band in either the same scrap yard or another location playing
as the vocals kick in on the song, after a short time of watching the band perform
it will go back to the member on a car looking panicked, they will walk around the
scrapyard looking worried while also cutting back to the band periodically, as the
first chorus come in it will tart showing the band energetically playing, although
the first chorus is very short so it will primarily focus on the band. Towards the
end of the first chorus the main character will see another person dressed in a
scary costume who will not see him back. This introduces the antagonist but then
as the music goes back to being calm it will maintain a spooky atmosphere while
not going into too much detail and action. As the second chorus starts the band
will be shown energetically performing again but this time go back to the story
and show the antagonist see the main character and there will be a chase scene
which will go well with the upbeat chorus. In this chorus it is extended and shows
more of the song, so with the rest of the chorus it will go back to a longer clip of
the band playing. The rest of the video will follow this format and it will turn from
day to night as the video goes on, by the end I want it to be very dark and only lit
by things like flairs and torches. While this is happening the band will still be
playing in the dark but with a lot of lights on them. I haven't decided how I want
to end the video but I think either having the antagonist catching the main
character and taking them away as the last part of the song plays with the lyrics
”Scream, scream, scream the way you would if I ravaged your body Scream,
scream, scream the way you would If I ravaged your mind” then cutting back to
the band for the final replay of the chorus.
20. GUIDANCE:
PRE-PRODUCTION
ASSESSMENT
You need to assess the viability of your production and
investigate what is required to enable you to make your
music video
Much of this task is hypothetical, which means you will
need to investigate standard costings for such a
production and apply these to your planned production
considering which equipment you would need and
resources, etc
Resources to support this are in the Pre-production
assessment folder on Blackboard
Delete the questions on each slide and insert your
responses
21. TITLE OF
PRODUCTION/PRODUCTION
OUTLINE
Summary of intended production
Detail here what you are going to make and the intended
outcome
Detailed breakdown of the music track chosen and your
interpretation of it [remember the questions in the
workbook, e.g. pace/mood/tone/structure]
Specific outline your intended technical/equipment
requirements
Include any details that you think [you could use material
from your pitch]
22. LOCATIONS
You need to identify locations and plan a recce.
What are the limitations and risks, eg distance, access, cost,
weather? How will you manage this?
Scrap yard, there are a lot of risks here as it is quite far from
me and my friends that will be in the video meaning we
need to do all shooting in one day, it is owned by 2 people
so there is a chance they may say we cannot use it (this is
not likely though as they are family friends), quite low cost
the only thing that is needed is petrol to get us there. The
weather could be an issue as there is very little shelter so if
it rains we will have a hard time filming. These are quite
simple to fix, we just have to plan well, pick a day with good
weather, make sure we get all of the shots in one day and
act appropriately so we don’t get kicked out.
My second location is a graveyard, distance is not an issue
because it is at the end of my road, no one is ever in there,
there is no cost and the weather shouldn't be too much of
an issue as rain in a graveyard just adds to the creepiness of
the video
23. EQUIPMENT
What do you need? E.g. equipment, resources? Mostly
from college, but who do you need to speak to get this
kit? What is available? When?
Look at equipment hire places, etc
I need a camera and a tripod from college, to get these I
will need to book them for when I am going to film
24. FACILITIES
Where will you edit your video? Do you need any other
specialist facilities…?
I will edit my video in college as I do not have editing
software of my own
25. PERSONNEL
CREW: What is your team? Who is in it? What are each
team members strengths/weaknesses? When are they
available?
The crew is just me, I will be on camera
CAST: Do you need any external performers? When are
they available? Cost implications? Will you have to feed
them? Transport them?
I have 3 performers that will be in the video willingly, one
of the 3 can drive and has a car so we will be using him
for transport. I will give him money for petrol however
Other personnel? Is anyone else helping you? May need
someone else to film, as if I cant find a fourth band
member I will have to act in it
26. PROPS/COSTUME/ETC
Prop list
• Guitars
• Drums
• Microphone
• Flares
• Smoke bombs
• Torches
• Fake blood
• Fake weapon
Costume list
• Black outfits for the band
• Chains hoodies etc. to fit the metal
style
• Normal casual clothes for main
character
• A killer costume for the antagonist
27. FAKE BLOOD
1.) jar
2.) water
3.) powder sugar
4.) red food color
5.) green food color
6.) Cocoa powder
29. PRE-PRODUCTION: VISUAL
PLANNING
This section is concerned with the visual planning of your
music video
You should use this section to develop the sequencing or
your video, establish the relationship between the visuals
and the track itself and create a structure for you to
follow when filming
It is important that you ‘pre-visualise’ the video before
you make it; it will make filming and production a more
streamlined process
The following tasks are part of your visual planning
Pre-visualisation and concept boards
Storyboarding
Shot list
30. PRE-
VISUALISATION/CONCEPT
BOARDS
Tool for exploring the direction and visuals
Provides inspiration and information for the “look & feel”
Presents key moments in your video
A means to sketch/plan ideas
Information on colour/lighting
Defining the “mise-en-scene”
Include as much here as you like, but keep it relevant to the
production, the following slides have been left blank for you
to approach in your own way, add more as you need to
Extension suggestion: edit a short sequence of clips that
have inspired or influenced your video [similar to this:

hunger-games-might-be-better-than-the-real-movie]
31.
32.
33. RIP-O-MATIC
You should also construct a 15-20second Rip-o-matic
test reel using existing footage to convey the type of
video you want to make
34. STRUCTURAL BREAKDOWN
Breakdown your track into it basic sections [e.g. intro,
verse, chorus, verse, etc] and apply broad visual ideas to
each section
You can use this as the master template for your
production, then add more shots to each section when
you develop your full visual plan
You should create a slide showing all the sections of the
song, then add a slide for each section with timings,
lyrics, what happens and details on specific shots
You could storyboard and shot list each section as you
go, to break up the process.
35. STORYBOARDING
Your storyboard should bring your idea to life
Provide an idea of the sequencing of you video
Provides a basis for production
Suggested online storyboard creators are:
https://www.storyboardthat.com
http://www.pixton.com [very complicated]
http://www.storyjumper.com [allows you to insert your own images]
Alternatively, hand draw or photograph your storyboard and
scan or copy to insert it onto your slides
There are lots of tips collected together on Blackboard!
36. SHOT LIST
Your shot list should contain the sequential breakdown
of what you need to shoot for your video
It should work in partnership with your storyboard
It will be your working document when you film
It should contain the shot number, scene number, shot
description, framing and action you will see
It should also have information on performers in the
scene and other props, etc
Shot list template is on Blackboard in the pre-production
folder.

39. PRODUCTION GROUP INFO
Include names, contact info, and defined roles at
difference stages of production, using a table is
suggested
Alex, +447957671550, act as the drummer in the band,
plays the antagonist in the story
Joe, +447576968125, act as the singer, plays the
protagonist in the story
Rachel, 07914257301, act as camera woman
40. LOCATION INFORMATION
Information and images of your location[s] for filming
Addymans scrapyard
You should have address details, clearance/premissions
for filming, recce photos and floorplans [including
camera, equipment and cast/crew layouts]
Where possible, have a plan B fallback location option
graveyard
Assess each location for any issues and suggest
solutions
Scrapyard, may not be allowed access by the owners,
could be unsafe, quite far away so need to pay for petrol
Graveyard, ethical issues
41. RISK ASSESSMENT
Risk Assess each separate filming location using the table in
the camera H&S PP on Bb as a staring point
There are lots of risks with my location as it is a dangerous
place if you aren't safe and sensible, there is heavy
machinery, broken cars, planes etc. 2 guard dogs, 2 guard
dogs, scrap metal lying around. None of these are risky if
you constantly are aware of your surroundings and only film
in the areas I am allowed to. The risk is increased as I want
to film part in the dark, this could be a problem as there is
so much randomly placed things that could be walked into
or tripped over, extra caution must be used while walking
around in the dark.
Graveyard, there is no real risk other than the possibility of
walking into a tomb stone but this is quite unlikely, this can
be stopped by just moving around with caution, there is
also some ethical issues, you cannot show names on tomb
stones and also not walk over the graves, this is again easy
to solve, we will film the back of the tomb stones and make
sure to only walk on the paths
42. CONTINGENCY PLANNING
Things go wrong
Your contingency plan is there to give you a backup or to
minimise the effect on production
You should consider the following areas: Technical,
Location, Personnel and Organisational areas [about 5
potential issues for each]
Use the form in pre-production folder on Blackboard
