What is Radiology?
Radiology represents a branch of medicine that deals with radiant energy (energy that
travels by waves or particles) in the diagnosis and treatment of diseases.
This field can be divided into two broad areas – DIAGNOSTIC RADIOLOGY &
INTERVENTIONAL RADIOLOGY.
RADIOLOGIST
A medical doctor who specializes in
diagnosing and treating disease and
injury through the use of medical imaging
techniques such as x-rays, computed
tomography (CT), etc.

Diagnostic radiology is the field of medicine that uses imaging exams and
procedures to diagnose a patient
What is Diagnostic radiology?
The most common types of diagnostic
radiology exams include :
• X-ray Radiography,
• Ultrasound,
• Computed Tomography (CT),
• Nuclear Medicine Including Positron
Emission Tomography (PET), And
• Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI)
• x-rays

Interventional radiology (IR), also known as vascular and interventional
radiology (VIR) or surgical radiology, is a sub-specialty of radiology providing
minimally invasive image-guided diagnosis and treatment of diseases in every organ
system.
What is Interventional radiology?
Examples of interventional radiology
procedures include:
• Embolization to control bleeding
• Cancer treatments
• Needle biopsies
• Feeding tube placement
• Venous access catheter placement

1. Computed tomography (CT), also known as a
CAT scan (computerized axial tomography)
2. Fluoroscopy (medical imaging that displays a continuous X-ray
image on a screen)
3. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
4. Mammography (x-ray picture of the breast)
5. Nuclear medicine, which includes such tests as
a bone scan, thyroid scan, and thallium cardiac
stress test
6. X-rays
7. Positron emission tomography, also called PET
imaging or a PET scan ( is a type of nuclear imaging test
that shows the metabolic activities (energy usage) of your brain)

DIFFERENCE BETWEEN CT SCAN AND MRI
