What are holding devices?
Tools that grip items or hold them together:
• Vices
• G clamps
• F clamps
• Sash clamps
• Hold fast
• Pliers
• Pincers
• Bench hooks

When we use clamps
Whenever we use clamps for holding timber and items
together, we use scrap pieces of timber as clamps can
bruise and damage timber when large amounts of pressure
are applied.

G clamps
G clamps are available in several sizes and depths. They
can be very useful in applying enormous amounts of
pressure.

F clamps
The F clamp is often referred to as the speed clamp. This
clamp has an adjustable arm which can be set to
accommodate any width up to the distance of the main bar.

Sash clamps
Sash clamps are so called because of their original use in
clamping together components of windows and door frames
(ie sashes) They would typically be used in pairs, as shown
below.

Storing clamps
How you store clamps is personal preference, but
recommendations are:
• G clamps – on a timber or shelf horizontally.
• Sash clamps – on brackets vertically.
