safety regulations
• But having a proper waste management plan can help:
– Reduce costs
– Promote a positive image of the construction industry

Buying and storing materials
When buying materials, issues to consider include:
• Ordering the right amount
• Staggering deliveries if large quantities are required
• The material source (ie is it an environmentally friendly source?)
• The packaging – can it be disposed of easily or recycled?
When storing materials, issues to consider include:
• Checking the materials when they are delivered
• Making sure storage areas are secure, dry and well ventilated
• That any dangerous liquids or other materials are stored in
accordance with COSHH regulations

Site activities
• Not acceptable to have large amounts of mixed waste on a
construction site
• Proper planning can reduce waste by recycling as much as possible
on site
• This reduces the amount of waste being transported and disposed of
• Top tip: keeping a site tidy will reduce material losses and
generation of waste material

Training and awareness
• You may be asked to attend a site induction
• Among other things, this will raise awareness of and give training
regarding on-site:
– Waste disposal
– Waste management
– Waste safety

Waste segregation
• Segregate waste using different skips wherever possible
• For example, have:
– A skip for wood
– A skip for plasterboard
– A skip for waste metal
