Introduction
• Allow tradesmen to complete elements of work efficiently and to
required standards
• Important for safety and efficiency to:
– Select the right tool
– Keep tools well maintained
• Build up a collection of tools that will be suitable for use in tiling
• To help avoid losing tools, only use those specific to the task and put
them back in your tool kit straight after use

• A vital piece of equipment!
• Come in a range of sizes
• Come in a range of shapes to
match the head of the screws to be
inserted or withdrawn

Measuring tools
• Measuring tools allow you to
measure across walls or floors
• Help with the setting-out process
Tape measure
• Retractable for easy storage
• Come in different lengths
• Can measure horizontally (floors)
and vertically (walls)
• You may need someone to help
you if you have to measure a longer
length

Levelling equipment
• A large number of levelling tools available for tilers
• Which tool to use will depend on the area being tiled
• Important to select right tool: finding level and plumb accurately is the
basis for setting out work correctly

Spirit level
• Extremely important piece of
equipment
• Used for creating and checking
level and plumb lines
• Tip: to check a level is accurate,
turn the spirit level end to end – the
position of its bubble should remain
the same

Laser level
• Projects a laser level or plumb line
onto a wall or floor
• Can be used as a datum or point to
work from when setting out

Tile nippers
• Used to:
– Cut shapes from tiles
– Trim awkward thin cuts

Manual tile cutters
• Two types (see images)
• Both types do same job
• Choose depending on which you
prefer!
• Work by:
– ‘Scribing’ a straight line on a tile
– Applying pressure on either side of the tile
until it breaks along the scribe

Water saw
• Used to cut out parts of a tile that a
manual cutter cannot cut, eg:
– When a corner needs to be cut
• You can see a home video of a wet

Finishing tools
Trowels
• Can be used for mixing, removing
and spreading adhesive or grout
• Spreading trowels have notches
on the side at different depths
• This allows you to spread adhesive
on the background to different
depths
• Range of depth varies from 3mm to
15mm
• Usually:
– A 6mm trowel is used for walls
– A 10mm trowel is used for floors

All rights reserved. 2 of 13 Introduction • Allow tradesmen to complete elements of work efficiently and to required standards • Important for safety and efficiency to: – Select the right tool – Keep tools well maintained • Build up a collection of tools that will be suitable for use in tiling • To help avoid losing tools, only use those specific to the task and put them back in your tool kit straight after use

All rights reserved. 12 of 13 Finishing tools Trowels • Can be used for mixing, removing and spreading adhesive or grout • Spreading trowels have notches on the side at different depths • This allows you to spread adhesive on the background to different depths • Range of depth varies from 3mm to 15mm • Usually: – A 6mm trowel is used for walls – A 10mm trowel is used for floors Source: Wickes.co.uk
