Unimate, the first industrial robot, began working at General Motors in the 1960s. It transported and assembled hot pieces of die-cast metal from the assembly line to auto bodies, performing a dangerous job that risked worker injury. It obeyed pre-programmed step-by-step commands stored on a magnetic drum.
