The Importance Of A Healthy Lifestyle On Good Nutrition,...
CHAPTER 3 When health is absent, wisdom cannot reveal itself, art cannot become manifest,
strength cannot be exerted, wealth is useless, and reason is powerless. –Herophiles 300 B.C.
Growing up I had generally experienced good health. Sure I had my share of runny noses, upset
stomachs and scraped knees but I was usually energetic, athletic, creative and optimistic about life.
Health, fitness and well–being were important to my family. I came to value the importance of a
healthy lifestyle: good nutrition, proper sleep, exercise and sportsmanship. Education was equally
emphasized, "a sound mind in a sound body," my grandfather repeatedly told my sister and me. My
grandfather, Pop–Pop, was a gregarious, tall and handsome man with a gleam in his eye who greatly
valued education. I listened carefully to the conversations at the weekly Sunday night dinner table
when we visited my grandparents because I always learned something new. Even though the
prevailing rule was "children are seen but not heard," Pop–Pop always welcomed my questions
about economics, politics, history, human nature, art and literature. In fact, he encouraged them. He
was the smartest and wisest person I knew. I have never forgotten what my grandfather wrote in my
autograph book when I was in second grade, "Good, better, best, never let it rest, until your good is
your better and your better is your best." I had been a good student, curious about everything and I
always wanted to better myself. There was no

Sportsmanship Essay
Sportsmanship
Sportsmanship is the character, practice, or skill of a person involved in sports.
This includes the participant, the parents, the coaches, and all spectators. Sportsmanlike
conduct includes fairness, courtesy, learning to be a good loser, being competitive
without rude behavior, or experiencing any ill feelings toward the opponent.
Too often in any sporting event, the purpose of the sport is forgotten. Winning
has become overwhelmingly important to the adults involved. This attitude is
inflicted on the youth. People of all ages should be allowed to fully embrace the
challenge and fun of playing sports. Teaching, coaching, motivating, and winning
are fine as long as the reason for the sport or activity is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Too many coaches and parents
tend to forget the reason for sports for children. They get caught up in the excitement
and competitiveness. Winning is the ultimate goal, at all costs. The cost is the
effect this attitude has on the children. I have witnessed this behavior from coaches and
parents, where they have actually embarrassed and humiliated young players in front
of their peers. The negative effect this has on the athletes is obvious. They become
aggressive, sometimes withdrawn and angry, rude, and inconsiderate.
Sports are not just an activity. They form a stepping stone toward the future.
Sportsmanship teaches children how to interact with peers, how to relate and interact
with others. Sports can teach cooperation, sharing, and compassion. At a young
age participation in sports introduces players to rules, and how to incorporate them
into other aspects of life.
A child must realize that losing has absolutely nothing to do with self–worth, that
their personal value is not measured by winning or losing, but doing the best that they
can in sports and life. It is important that children and adults be part of a group to
feel acceptance, without the emphasis on winning.
Self–confidence does not come from winning or losing, but how the outcome
is handled. If you perform to your best ability, then you have won the only
important game.
Sportsmanship is what the activity

We Should Have More P. E In School
P.E. Kids drifting off in their minds and staring into space because they're fed up of class and bored.
This is what it looks like in many different schools. It is why we need more P.E.. The reasons we
need more P.E. Is because many kids are obese, P.E. It Can help kids learn, and it teaches them
important lessons. Why not have more P.E.. We should have more P.E. because it gives kids more
time to get outside and play instead of not doing it at home because of homework. The fact is the
obesity level in America is at an all time high so more P.E. would allow kids to get more exercise. It
could show some kids what sports they like to do. Without PE. some kids might not get outside at
all because they're playing video games or doing homework.

Sportsmanship Essay
Sports events are essentially social in character. They facilitate the coming together of people from
various parts of the country, at a national level, and various parts of the world, at the international
level. The dictionary defines sportsmanship as the face or practice of participating in sports or sport.
It is also the conduct and attitude considered as befitting participants in sports, especially fair play,
courtesy, striving spirit and grace in losing. The 'golden rule' for athletes is good sportsmanship. You
demonstrate this when you show respect for yourself, teammates, opponents, coaches, officials and
fans. Sportsmanship does not simply pertain to players, spectators, ... Show more content on

Second even if the other team is losing their tempers, it doesn't mean you have to. We are not
professional athletes but we are college players/fans so we must hold ourselves to a higher standard
because people are always watching. Third, cheer on your team with positive statements and avoid
trash talking the other team. Fourth when officials make a call, accept it gracefully even if it goes
against you. Remember the referees may not be right every time, but they are people doing their
best just as you are. Lastly, whether you win or lose, congratulate your opponents on a game well
played. The next time anyone plays a sport, they can hold their head high after the event and look at
themselves in the mirror and say, "I played my best and treated everyone with respect." I know we
play sports for the love of the game, but we must remember that we are all on the same team in the

The Importance Of Youth Sports
Sport is viewed as an important aspect of youth development (Arthur–Banning, Wells, Baker &
Hegreness, 2009). Participation in sports has shown positive results on health (Arthur–Banning,
Wells, Baker & Hegreness, 2009). Youth sport participation is said to develop cognitive and
physical skills, social skills, and teamwork (Arthur–Banning, Wells, Baker & Hegreness, 2009).
Coaches and parents play major roles in determining the outcome of the experience (Ross, Mallet &
Parkes, 2015). This is important as the popularity in youth sports is on the rise. There is an estimated
45 million child and adolescent participants in the United States (Merkel, 2013). Interestingly,
physical, psychological, and cognitive development believe that one should be at least 6 years old
prior to participating in organized team sports (Merkel, 2013). Additionally, an assessment of a
child's individual sports readiness is suggested to be completed to determine whether a child is
ready or not (Merkel, 2013). There has been a decline in prioritizing developmental skills (Arthur–
Banning, Paisley & Wells, 2007). This includes sportsmanship and fair play, as there has been an
overemphasis on competition and winning at all costs (Arthur–Banning, Paisley & Wells, 2007).
The responsibility of increasing sportsmanship is on those adults with the power, such as referees
(Arthur–Banning, Paisley & Wells, 2007). Referees have power to dictate outcomes in game
situations (Arthur–Banning, Paisley & Wells, 2007).

Team Sport Research Paper
Playing a team sport builds character because it teaches a person how to be respectful, how to work
with others, and it teaches good sportsmanship. These qualities can play a very large role in life
down the road. They can be very important for future jobs or activities that a person might do.
Without these qualities a person could be at a severe disadvantage.
Playing a team sport teaches respect. Being respectful applies to being nice to your opponents,
coaches and referees. Respect is something that is taught only through other people and is earned
through good efforts in game with your teammates. To show respect to an opponent is to show
admiration to their abilities and acknowledge that they are also a good team and are just as good as
you. To show respect to a referee is to agree with their calls and shake their hand after the game. To
show respect to your coaches is listen to what they are saying in the huddle and follow their
instructions during game. To have respect is such an important thing for people to have because it
keeps that person in their place and keeps them from pretending to be someone that he or she is not.

To have the ability to work with others is something that becomes very important later on in life and
is a very good quality to have early. Many jobs that people have require the ability to work with
others and those who can't are severely hindered. Being able to work with others also can make a
person very easy and outgoing because they are not always thinking about themselves and think for
the betterment of the group. Working with others means that you are able to accomplish a task with
a group of random strangers and by the end of it create something or do something that in your
opinion s noteworthy and acceptable for the rest of the world to see. Businesses and people who are
hiring others see this as a very important trait and look for it in

The Ethics Of Coaching Education
Playing sports has come a long way from a simple game played in one's backyard for fun and
pleasure, continuing on to professional athletes competing at high levels for glory, honour and
prestige. An athlete with the correct articulated, ethical–decision making instruction has been able to
help them advance within their sport. Ongoing coaching education has been gaining importance
within our society. For those invested in athletics, there is a need to know what can result from
athlete's behaviours in sport, with a focus on tennis. In particular, sportsmanship, gamesmanship,
unwritten codes of behaviour, competitive orientation as ego or task driven, coaching orientation as
an adult or athlete–centered, and the nature of sport are important ... Show more content on

Eitzen (2012) describes sport to be a rule–bound activity that should promote fair play,
sportsmanship, and hard work, but there have been many unwritten rules, in particular within the
sport of tennis that do the opposite effect. Within tennis, players that self–referee their own matches
are required to make lines calls and should give their opponent the benefit of the doubt when unsure
of where the ball landed. When an opponent or parent chants loudly this in turn can get inside a
players head giving the opponent a psychological advantage. As a player competing in tennis, an
opponent would stomp their feet loudly on the ground creating an impression that they were coming
to the net, creating an unfair tactic in the eyes of the other player. As Stewart (2014) stated, if a
player wants to win at any cost, rules and structures can be disregarded, creating an unfair victory
for the opponent. Crone (1999) stated that an athlete focusing on the end–result or a win–at–all–
costs attitude, there then becomes a de–emphasis on the process that in turn leads to less
sportsmanship and promotes

Soccer Informative Speech Essay
Have you ever heard the saying, "have you ever wanted something so much it hurt"? Well, when I
say it. I'm talking about literally hurting. Your legs are so sore, it feels like you can't take another
stride, your so out of breath from chasing the ball around, and your so exhausted from last nights
practice, your bed seems to be the most attractive thing to you right now. Three hour practices of
straight running, push ups, and sit ups has its pros and cons. Even at times when you feel like you
need a break, pushing yourself through it is what makes you a better player. I choose to inform you
on soccer because I've played my whole life, from 5 years old until my senior year in high school,
and its something I know about. The three main ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Understanding that and accepting it is a person with good sportsmanship. Where as if they were
upset at their teammates for not doing their part and getting overly upset at the other team for
playing good soccer is not good sportsmanship. At the end of the game, whether you have lost or
have won you always shake hands with the other team. It is always necessary to let the other team
know that it was a good well–played game whatever the outcome was. A person with good
sportsmanship would clearly accept that fact. People that do have good sportsmanship are more easy
to be around. It's almost like they're carefree and just play soccer for the fun of the game and not just
for the win. Don't get me wrong, it is always better to win, but everyone loses at least once in his or
her lives. Lastly, I think that dedication is another key component to playing yet again, not just
soccer, but any sport. Having a teammate that isn't dedicated is like having an employee not show
up to work every other day. You need that person to be there to get the job done. If you miss days of
practice or even games, those are days that everyone is running an hour more than you and are
gaining more endurance. It almost will seem like you can see the players that aren't as dedicated on
the field because they don't care as much. An article called what motivates athletes by psychology
today states that

Importance Of Sportsmanship In Sports
The two things that most attract me to Wellesley are the Chandler Pool and the Lulu Campus Center.
Sportsmanship is one of my defining characteristics. Having been swimming for the past three
years, the eight–lane professional Chandler Pool at Wellesley attracts me deeply. Swimming has
both strengthened my perseverance and given me the spirit of collaboration and sportsmanship. I
enjoy the feeling of racing in the water, pushing myself to the finish line. Swimming has given my
body power, developed my deep thinking skills, and, most importantly, made me into a leader. As
the captain of the swimming team at my high school, I have had tough moments leading the team,
because most of my teammates are more senior than I and I am also an international student. But a
loud voice without any action won't win over team members. I changed the situation by working
harder and improving my communication skills. I practice longer hours than any other team
member., and became the fastest one in the team, although I am not the most physically fit. I
volunteered to swim the 500 yards freestyle and fought for my team to make the state meet. I
constantly practice my communication skills and improve my English. Instead of giving direct
orders to team members, I help and care for my team members. During my two–week medical
leave, although my doctor advised me to stay at home and rest, I went to the swimming pool,
helping the coach keep time, cheering for my team and handing them water and towels.

Being A Successful Basketball Player
Being a Successful Basketball Player As a child growing up sports has been a part of my life. There
are many different sports that an athlete can play like basketball, baseball, and football. Basketball is
one of my favorite sports and is also one of the highly paid sports of all time. There are three
personality traits that make a successful basketball player. Those traits are determination, leadership,
and sportsmanship. Determination is one of the main keys in being a successful basketball player.
My definition of determination is someone who never gives up on anything in life. Michael Jordan
was sick with the flu one night before a game. He still had determination to play in the NBA game
that night with the flu. Another example of determination is when Stephen Curry was down three
games in the NBA series, and he had determination to come back and win the NBA title two years in
a row. Stephen Curry showed true determination skills to never give and to work hard for what he
wanted in life. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
My definition of leadership is when someone takes over and guides another person. I showed true
leadership skills when I saw my teammate struggling at practice on a ball handling drill. I stopped
what I was doing to come over and help him handle the ball better. Another example of leadership is
when the Cleveland Cavaliers were losing at halftime in game six of the NBA finals. LeBron James
went into the locker room, and he had a talk with his teammates about never giving up no matter
what the score was. He showed great leadership skills in helping them win a title and winning MVP
that night of game

Persuasive Letter About School Sports Research
Dear, Mr. Mattern
Schools sports are very helpful to young people, and should continued to be funded. Schools sports
have been used to help children learn about education, physical activity, teamwork, and
sportsmanship, and without school sports, children would never learn the skills to cooperate with
their peers. Without the use of school sports, we would not have any of these great skills that all
children need to learn to be successful.
School sports can help children with education, because physical activity can improve test results,
According to Daniel Gould, "Not only are school sports justified on educational grounds, but
researchers have shown that participation in them and other extracurricular activities have positive
effects on adolescents." Daniel Gould's claim proves that sports can improve academics, which

sportsmanship, which is very important in today's world, because it is needed to cooperate with
other people in school. School sports teach sportsmanship by putting them on a team which will
have them contribute to the game, and working together to win. With all these great benefits, it also
makes students more social. Daniel Gould also states "This does not mean, however, that school
sports are not without problems. An overemphasis on winning, year–round single sport
participation, and difficulties finding qualified coaches are but a few of concerns facing leaders in
the area." Even though children need sports to learn sportsmanship, it is still a controversial topic

Are High School Sports Beneficial For Students?
Unless you have been living under a rock, there is a good chance you have participated in or
watched sports sometime throughout your existence on Earth. Whether you play everyday or every
so often, or even if you don't play at all, sports affect your life in one way or another. Not only do
you get exercise while playing sports, but they can help you in more ways than one. This may be a
challenge to digest in your currently curvy stomach, but sports can actually help with improving
your grades too. Participating in sports can also promote sportsmanship. Sports are beneficial for the
youth because they can improve your grades as well as promoting sportsmanship.
First of all, when kids play sports it can positively influence his/her grades. A study conducted in
Michigan has proven that children who have participated in sports have prominent academic
aspirations and are more driven than children that don't participate in sports (Are High School

Sportsmanship And Sportsmanship Of A Team
Sportsmanship All athletes can recognize that being a part of a team is hard. It is incredibly difficult
to select a group of teenagers that will (1) all get along, (2) work together seamlessly, and (3)
respect their coaches. The formula for the perfect team is unknowable. One negative spirit always
exists to drag the team down, to deflate their motives and increase their egos; but that does not have
any effect on the sportsmanship of a team. Sportsmanship does not rely on the cohesiveness of a
team. It does not correlate with how many bonding trips a team endures or how many groups of
friends are on the team. It is not entirely internal or entirely external. Sportsmanship is not simply

Examples Of Gamesmanship In Sports
ETHICS OF SPORTS
To understand the role ethics plays in sport & competition. It is important to make distinction
between gamesmanship & sportsmanship.
Gamesmanship is built on the principle that winning is everything. Athletes & coaches are
encouraged to bend the rules wherever possible in order to gain a competitive advantage over an
opponent & to pay less attention to the safety & welfare of the competition. Some of the key tenants
of gamesmanship are:–
1. WINNING IS EVERYTHING.
2. It's only cheating if you get caught.
3. It is the referee's job to catch wrongdoing & the athletes & coaches have no inherent
responsibility to follow the rules.
4. The ends always justify the means. Some examples of gamesmanship are :–
1. Faking a foul or injury. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Covert personal fouls, such as grabbing a player underwater during a water polo match.
5. Inflicting pain on an opponent with the intention of knocking him or her out of the game.
6. Like that saint's bounty scandal.
7. The use of performance, enhancing drugs.
8. Taunting or intimidating an opponent.
9. A coach lying about an athlete's grades in order to keep him or her eligible to play.
A more ethical approach to athletics is sportsmanship. Under a sportsmanship model, healthy
competition is seen as a means of cultivating personal honour, virtue & character. It contributes to a
community of respect & trust between competitors & in society. The goal in sportsmanship is not
simply to win, but to pursue victory with honour by giving one's best effort.
Ethics in sport requires 4 key virtues:–
Fairness , Integrity , Responsibility & Respect.
1. Fairness:–
1. All athletes & coaches must follow established rules & guidelines of their respective sport.
2. Teams that seek an unfair competitive advantage over their opponent create an uneven playing
field which violates the integrity of the sport.
3. Athletes & coaches are not discriminated against or excluded from participating in a sport based
on their race, gender, or sexual

I do think that these skills have helped me in my own life. I have learned that won't always succeed
at everything, but that is okay because I learn something along the way. I have also experienced
competing with some people who exhibited poor sportsmanship before. They would often say that
my team cheated, which was very off putting to us. It made the game not fun anymore as well as
making it harder to focus on it. Improving sportsmanship and teamwork is really important in
making everyone understand that it's about trying your best along with helping your team, not about
winning all the time. I think by teaching people this, they will improve their
sportsmanship/teamwork skills and get along with people better. One example of good
sportsmanship in professional sports is the story about professional tennis player, Bailey Kent. She
called herself out on hitting the net with her racket when no one had realised. Unfortunately, some
professional athletes show some signs of poor teamwork/sportsmanship. The 2015 Super Bowl was
one of them. A big fight broke out between Patriots and Seahawks. This was all caused by Seahawks
huge loss. This was definitely not a sign of good sportsmanship/teamwork. I also think that having
good sportsmanship god potentially impact our society in a positive way. Teaching kids the value of
good sportsmanship from a young age could help them become mature adults as well as taking
difficult situations in a more positive

If children follow the example set by today's athletes, the definition would equal a sore loser. High

Michigan State University's report, "Sportsmanship: Building Character or 'Characters'?
" on the Youth Sportsman Institute webpage, explains the basic idea of how the role of
children's participation in sports affects their sportsmanship. The report gives examples of how good
sportsmen, and bad sportsmen are viewed by society. The Youth Sports Institute says,
"participation is viewed as a double–edged sword that may have either negative or positive
effects on the child"("Sportsmanship",1) and that "the critical factor in
determining whether the youth sports experience has a positive or negative effect on children is the
quality of adult leadership"("Sportsmanship, 3).
The story "Friday Night Lights", written by H.G. Bissinger, gives examples of bad
sportsmanship, like the Youth Sportsman Institute suggests. "Friday Night Lights" is a
story about a football–obsessed town in Odessa, Texas. The whole story expresses winning or losing

athletes; it is a town–wide disease. The coaches talk bad behind their player's backs, while the fans
litter the head coaches yard with for–sale signs, blaming him for losing the big game.

Gallipoli Film Analysis
This film analysis will define the importance of mateship and sportsmanship in the ANZAC culture
of Gallipoli (1981). Peter Weir film of the Gallipoli Campaign from 1915–196 revolves around the
mateship of Frank Dunne (Mel Gibson) and Archy Hamilton (Mark Lee) that binds them through
sportsmanship and military nationalism. The Australian and New Zealand Army Corps (ANZAC)
culture is typically based on the athleticism of soldiering culture, which allows Frank to become a
"runner" of information dispatches during the campaign. More so, Archy's speed is deferred because
of his patriotic desire to be on the "front lines" of the war. However, Frank and Archy are bound by
the mateship that they experience as alienated short distance runners, which ... Show more content

The mateship of Archy and Frank is based on the sportsmanship culture of Western Australia, which
was a popular recruitment method for young men that joined ANZAC and, eventually, fought in the
Gallipoli Campaign. Archy is a the blindly loyal nationalist that relies on his running skills to put
peer pressure on Frank to join ANZAC. Frank initially declines, but the sportsmanship culture
encourages a deep bond with a fellow short–distance runner in the effort to maintain mateship.
However, there were many different soldiers from a wide variety of backgrounds, such as lower
class backgrounds, which define a different and less romantic view of sportsmanship that Weir
presents in this film. In reality, man men from the lower working classes joined ANZAC as a way to
avoid poverty and low wage work. Archy and Frank's relationship is a heroic and romantic view of
the Gallipoli Campaign, yet it does show the horror and carnage of "bloody murder" of young men,
such as Archy, that died in this failed attack against the Turkish Army. In this manner, the film
Gallipoli provides insight into some aspects of mateship and sportsmanship between Archy and
frank that was certainly valid, but it does not provide a comprehensive and realistic understanding of
the multiple perspectives of class status and identity that defined enlistment in ANZAC in WWI.

Sportsmanlike Behavior
Throughout my time as a high school student, I have learned the importance of sportsmanlike
behavior. While participating in athletic and academic programs, I have found that good
sportsmanship is what makes a good program and a good student–athlete. It requires you to not only
look out for yourself but also to look out for the well–being of others, both on your team and on the
opposing team. It is important to possess positive sportsmanship because you learn to care for and
help others regardless of differences, which is a quality that is beneficial in an academic setting,
athletics, and life as a whole.
During my high school career, I have demonstrated good sportsmanship while participating in
various extracurricular activities, such as the National Honor Society, diversity club, rocket

Their sportsmanlike behavior taught me that winning or earning an A in school isn't the most
important thing. The knowledge gained and memories made during the journey are more valuable
than whatever prize you may receive. I have found that this sportsmanlike frame of mind teaches
you how to respond to others in an empathetic manner. For example, in sports you are not always on
the winning side; when you are on the winning team you can still respond to people who lost in a
compassionate manner. Meanwhile, if you are on the losing side you can respond with happiness at
the success of others because you can acknowledge that something was still gained. It is also about
watching others succeed from your assistance and how you pass down what you have learned

Positive Benefits Of Youth Sports
According to the English Oxford Dictionary sports are activities involving physical exertion and
skill in which an individual or team competes against another or others for entertainment. Sports are
something everyone can enjoy in some way or another, whether it be play competitively, playing for
fun, or watching them. Almost everyone has played a sport in their life, it could be on a team or
even in gym class. One of the most important things a parent can do is get their kids involved in
sports at a young age, even if they don't stick with it in the long run. As I said in my 1.7 current
event, kids participating in athletics has decreased by 8 percent according to Aspen data, this is
detrimental to kids futures. Youth sports teach kids many lessons and can help prepare them for life
and future careers.
Youth sports teach kids valuable life skills, one being teamwork. When a child begins playing on a
sports team, they learn social skills and how to cooperate with others in order to work towards a
common goal. This skill is beneficial for a child to learn at a young age. When they begin school,
they need to have good social skills and they need to work with other students in group activities,
projects, etc. This skill will also be a necessity in most work places. In a lot of workplaces, workers
combine their skills to reach a common goal. Teamwork skills include guiding others, participating,
and commitment, which are all skills you can learn from playing youth sports.

How Softball Changed How I Viewed My Sportsmanship
Playing softball changed how I viewed my sportsmanship. When I was in 1st grade I played T–ball
& in 2nd grade I played baseball. I stopped playing softball then. I haven't played in 7 years & I
really wanted to play again. I finally got onto a softball team & I was really anxious but excited. I
was glad that could I try again at something I really enjoyed doing. My first practice was batting
practice, it has been a while since I've hit. The first ball my coach pitches at me I missed. I felt dumb
because everyone else was so good, they knew what they were doing & they also all knew each
other. I basically felt like an outsider. As the first few when my hits & my plays had gotten better. I
had worked my hardest in softball because it made me very excited. ... Show more content on

Well, we lost our first game & I felt bad for my team because I thought we lost because of me. Our

worked, how I started to think about myself & how I played. Me as a player got better by me
changing my attitude & how I thought about how I played.
In the middle of our season we were winning most of our games & I also became one of the best
players on my team. I got moved up of our line up and most of the time I made it to home plate. I
had been making decent plays too! Out of all of that I learned that if I really enjoy something &
really want to achieve something, all I have to do is work hard & try my hardest. Now I'm pretty

Sportsmanship : A Sport Fairly And Loses Gracefully

Sportsmanship
"One who plays a sport fairly and loses gracefully" is how The Merriam Webster Dictionary defines
sportsmanship, but what is true Sportsmanship considered to you? Is it an attitude, or simply an act?
Sportsmanship can be handled in several different ways. It's how one team handles another on and
off the field. Simply it could also be said as just the way you handle the game in general after a
tough loss, or after an easy win, it how your demeanor is during and after a game. Sportsmanship
can be an Individual, as a team, as a community, or at a deeper meaning all of them together.
Sportsmanship has evolved greatly over the years. Sportsmanship is known as a couple different
names including; professionalism, and showmanship. Unsportsmanlike conduct, this results in a 15–
yard penalty, such as excessive celebration during a game after a score or a well–made play. For
serious instances of unsportsmanlike behavior such as fighting, there are fines, suspensions, and
bans from games, or even tournaments, and championships. These are all examples of poor
sportsmanship. The number one question is why suffer through penalties or pay thousands of dollars
in fines when you can just keep a calm head? Good sportsmanship is the most important aspect of a
game. Sometimes games will get personal and tension will rise very quickly even when the game is
close and a lot is on the line therefore, sportsmanship must be

Disqualification Essay: Jesse Owens At The Summer Olympics
In 1936 at the Summer Olympics in Berlin, American prodigy, Jesse Owens walked onto the track
welcomed by louder cheers than any olympic qualifier anywhere in the world. He was faster than
any man, black or white. In the long jump part of the competition, Owens found himself fouled in
his first two attempts; if he fouled again, he would face disqualification. His main opponent, Luz
Long, who was a German and had just set a record during the preliminary course, told him to adjust
his take–off point several inches behind the foul line to ensure he would qualify next round. Owens
embraced Long's advice, qualifying for the next round and setting a new Olympic record for the
gold medal while Long took silver. Long was the first person to run to congratulate Owens after his
triumph.
Not only was this the Olympics, this particular ceremony took place in Berlin during World War II,
with Hitler and the Nazis in power at the time. Long put himself at risk by helping Owens and
congratulating the African–American gold medalist afterwards. He did not do it because he wanted
to lose the Olympics held in his own country, he helped Owens because he had the upmost ... Show

Governance Issues In High School Athletics
Governance Issues in High School Athletics
The high school athletic association within each state is granted the right to govern and implement
all of the regulations and policies related to the interscholastic athletics participation of the high
schools (Sharp,Moorman,Claussen, 2014). In the article "Parent behavior, cyberbullying hurting
high school sportsmanship", the high school athletic association throughout the U.S has had several
reoccurring issues such as constant interference by the athlete's parents, social media and
cyberbullying, and lack of sportsmanship. The athlete's parental interference is causing athletic
directors and coaches to be bogged down by complaints via email and phone calls (Athletic
business, 2015). The parental

Sportsmanship Vs Sportsmanship
There is much debate in our current athletic culture on sportsmanship and gamesmanship. Stories of
scandals seem to make the news headlines almost weekly in college and professional athletics. In
fact, a story just broke about the Boston Red Sox using an apple watch to steal signs from the New
York Yankees (Olney, 2017). Stealing signs has always been part of baseball but using technology is
prohibited. There are numerous other examples of athletic teams bending the rules or completely
breaking the rules in order to gain a competitive advantage.
Sportsmanship is an important part of sports because it ensures that competitors are competing in a
fair and ethical manner. According to Epstein (2016), "The ethics of sports was once fairness.
Fairness meant not taking undue advantage; if anything, it meant allowing such advantages as
chance turned up to go to one's opponent." The Illinois High School Association's slogan for
sportsmanship is, "Do What's Right!" ("Do What's Right"). According to the IHSA athletes and
coaches should, "Represent their school and community favorably through positive interaction with
opposing fans and players before, during, and after the competition" ("Do What's Right!"). Good
sportsmanship means that athletes, coaches, and fans, respect their opponent, the referees, and the
game. This means playing within the rules, accepting the judgment of the officials, and be humble
and gracious in both victory and defeat. It is easy to identify good or bad

After consulting, the coach found out his reasoning being, when he played as a child, they did not
have all the gear to entirely be safe and this worried the dad that the same thing would happen to his

sportsmanship, hard–work, discipline, and teamwork, parents should take the risk and let their kids

By participating in football people can learn sportsmanship, hard work, discipline, and teamwork.
Considering the many lessons it teaches, teamwork and discipline play the main role. With
teamwork, players/children are learning how to trust their teammates the more experience they have
with each other. As for discipline, it teaches kids to work hard and set good goals which can be
helpful for them in the future as opposed to not playing, and being a step behind. NFL expert Jobe
Lewis says that "football requires a pretty unique brand of teamwork and requires the player to
discipline himself and to work hard" (Lewis 1).

and teamwork, and also how she uses them in her everyday life. Morelia's definition of
sportsmanship is to make an effort and give it your all (and hopefully win). "Knowing how to lose is
also important when playing any sport" she says as we all experience losing at one point or another.
Teamwork also plays a big role when playing any sport. Morelia explained that teamwork to her is

Definition Essay on Sportsmanship
Definition Essay on Sportsmanship Abstract Although it is very common to mention the term
Sportsmanship during any sports event, very few individuals are actually familiar with the true
definition of the word. For some it is the behavioral aspect shown by the participating teams or
athletes while others it is more than just a routine behavior and is associated with the deep rooted
respect of the opponent as well as the outcome of an event. Sportsmanship is known to be an
aspiration which supports the argument that any sporting activity should be enjoyed without the
worry of a desired outcome. Here the proper consideration of respect, fairness, ethics, and the
demonstration of fellowship with the competitors are shown. In this regard, the term Sore Loser is
referred to someone who refuses to accept defeat whereas Good Sport defines anyone being either a
good loser or a good winner. Sportsmanship could also be conceptualized as a stable disposition or
characteristic in which the participants of any sporting event behave differently as compared to what
is expected from them especially in unwanted outcomes. In a more general sense, sportsmanship
refers to different virtues like courage, fairness, persistence, self–control, and has also been closely
linked with interpersonal concepts of the way of treating others as well as being treated fairly,
respecting authority and opponents, and maintaining proper self–control when dealing with others.

Life Lessons Learned from Youth Competitive Sports Imagine: you are on a green soccer field,

point to break the tie so you can win and go to champions. But then when you're about to score the
referee comes in and tells you and everyone else that can't play because it's too dangerous. Kids
have been playing competitive sports for decades. So why should they not be played? Kids should

teamwork. One reason youth competitive sports teach lessons is they teach teamwork. According to

The Importance Of Sportsmanship In Sports
Sports, for thousands of years, have been a wonderful means for humankind to exercise one of our
most basic instincts: competition with our fellow humans. Surrounding all types of sports is the idea
of sportsmanship, the respect and ethical behavior shown to all participants of a contest. Sports fans
around the world have all seen their share of sore losers, bad winners, and generally horrifying
displays of poor sportsmanship. Yet, in all sports, there remain certain dogmas that only the most
poorly–behaved sportsman would dare to violate. The spirit of the game, in many cases, is far more
important than the outcome of the match, and a true competitor understands this. This is why many
of our most beloved athletes are not always the most talented or outstanding performers; it is those
who play with the purest heart, for the sake of the team, and with respect for all opponents. Truly
transcendent athletes are those that are able to combine this intangible trait with world class skill.
There are greater lessons to be learned from this besides being well–liked in the sporting
community. Sports, and by extension, the athletes who play them, are able to go beyond cultural
differences; surely there are stylistic differences between countries and regions, but in general,
sports are played the same wherever you go. Similarly, all fans of a sport are able to appreciate
incredible athletic feats or truly classy displays of sportsmanship. Simply put, sports have a way of
bringing people together. In a day in age when settling cultural differences is of utmost importance,
turning more towards sports is a reasonably viable way to bring the world closer together.
The best example of a sport bringing two societies together today is the case of cricket contests
between India and Pakistan. Tension and hostility have marked the relationship between the two
countries for much of the last century. What has become known as cricket diplomacy has been able
to bring an air of friendliness to talks between leaders. In 2011, the former president of Pakistan,
Pervez Musharraf was quoted on the benefits of cricket diplomacy. He said, "Firstly, I think it can be
used as an ice–breaker in case the two opposing groups' leadership is not

The Importance Of Sportsmanship In Sports
Sportsmanship depends on societies that are built upon trust and respect between competitors. With
professional sports turning into "the bread and circuses of a new Rome", fan's animosity directed
toward referees has soared. States have now passed laws in fourteen states to protect these referees
(Lipsyte 1–2). Having to defend authority figures screams that the world of sports is changing right
before our eyes. The controversial subject of sportsmanship allows me to take a stand on my
position that the unsportsmanlike behavior in athletics is taking over the realm of sports. Athlete's
vocabulary do not consist of trustworthiness, responsibility, and accountability anymore; instead,
games are consumed of bad behavior and severe consequences that youth see and then follow. The
principles of sports– respecting barriers, competing within the guidelines, engaging together to
reach set goals, complying with authority– is what embodied the American culture. The NBA
suspended Marcus Camby for five games because of an occurrence that resulted in a $350,000
penalty; to make the situation worse, the incident caused his coach fifteen stiches that Camby
provoked from his own actions. In addition to unsportsmanlike behavior represented by athletes,
parents and coaches are "outcome–focused" instead of "process–focused" as well. Coaches and
parents must display the right behavior, while remaining humble and graceful, if they expect their
child to do the same. Bobby Knight was finally

The Importance Of Sportsmanship In High School Sports
In a culture where sportsmanship is lacking, it is critical that stakeholders in high school athletics
work together to reestablish sportsmanship and ethics to the forefront of education–based athletics.
In fact, " The National Federation, the governing body for public high school sports, would like for
the number one priority of high school athletics to be GOOD SPORTSMANSHIP" (as cited in
Churdar, 2015, p. 2). Sportsmanship means respecting the opponent, the officials, and the game.
There are many people and groups who influence the actions and beliefs of athletes either in a
positive or negative manner, so it is important that these groups maintain a high view of
sportsmanship and take proactive measures to ensure that good sportsmanship is a priority for high
school sports.
Stakeholders
Coaches Coaches have a huge impact on the sportsmanship and behavior displayed by their team.
According to Churdar (2015), "The coach bears the greatest burden of responsibility for
sportsmanship. His influence upon the attitudes and behavior of the players, the student body, and
the fans is unequalled." (p. 2). Coaches have a huge influence on the behavior and attitude of their
athletes. According to John Wooden, "Profound responsibilities come with teaching and coaching.
You can do so much good–or harm. It's why I believe that next to parenting, teaching and coaching
are the two most important professions in the world" (as cited in Matheny, 2015, p. 99–100). This is
a very weighty but true statement. The majority of athletes look to their coaches for guidance not
only in athletics, but in life.
Coaches have a profound impact on their players not only with their words, but with their actions.
Coaches have the power and influence to lead their players to become more sportsmanlike by
modeling ethical and moral behavior. Coaches have the duty and responsibility to be role models for
the athletes. Matheny (2015) states, "We've been given the rare privilege and heavy responsibility of
influencing young people on a daily basis, for better or for worse, for the rest of their lives" (p. 53).
Coaches need to take this responsibility seriously and model ethical behavior at all times.
Dealing with officials is one area that many

How Sportsmanship Can Be A Part Of A Team
All athletes can recognize that being a part of a team is hard. It is incredibly difficult to select a
group of teenagers that will (1) all get along, (2) work together seamlessly, and (3) respect their
coaches. The formula for the perfect team is unknowable. One negative spirit always exists to drag
the team down, to deflate their motives, and increase their egos; but that does not have any effect on
the sportsmanship of a team. Sportsmanship does not rely on the cohesiveness of a team. It does not
correlate with how many bonding trips a team endures or how many groups of friends are on the
team. It is not entirely internal or entirely external. Sportsmanship is not simply the willingness of
an athlete to respect other teams; it is an athlete's ability to respect their own team and, most
importantly, his or her self. Sportsmanship is innate, reflecting an athlete's character. Neither
winning nor losing can change it. Over the years, I have joined a multitude of teams. Ballet in
preschool. Followed by basketball in kindergarten. Gymnastics. Softball. Soccer. I tried them all.
However, volleyball as the only one to stick. I started in third grade with big, bulky knee pads and
cute hair bows, and ceased playing during my sophomore year with strong, bulky thighs and years
of floor burn scars. I had been contemplating my departure from the one sport I ever truly played for
months. Something was missing. I did not love it, but I could not find it in myself to hate it.

American Football and Good Sportsmanship
"One who plays a sport fairly and loses gracefully" is how The Merriam Webster Dictionary defines
sportsmanship. What is a sportsman? The definition seems to have undergone a big change over the
years.
If children follow the example set by today's athletes, the definition would equal a sore loser. High
school sports should be a fun way to physically express yourself as an athlete, but at the same time
learn some of life's lessons, like sportsmanship, discipline, and respect. In today's society, winning
comes before everything, but if winning requires neglect of good sportsmanship, then nothing is
gained in the long run. Sportsmanship matters not only in sports, but also in the rest of our everyday
lives. In any competition, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The first instance of bad sportsmanship in the story is where Bissinger describes what was said to
Boobie Miles during the previous week's football game. One of the Cooper Cougar's players said,
"Com'on, you tough motherfucker, com'on lets see how tough you are!" and "you ain't nothin' but a
goddamn pussy!" In the Youth Sportsman Code, these comments would definitely fall under "the
making sarcastic remarks about opponents" and "the swearing at opponents" sections in the
unsportsmanlike category. Bad sportsmanship occurs again in "Friday Night Lights" when the
quarterback throws a bad pass as the last seconds tick off of the game clock. One of his teammates
curses him, when the right thing to do would be to say something like, "good effort, better luck next
time". "If the team is in a championship game and a star player violates a team sportsmanship rule
which requires removal from the game, the rule must be enforced." ("Sportsmanship",3) The Youth
Sports Institute says to reinforce sportsmanship behaviors and penalize unsportsmanlike behaviors
("Sportsmanship",3). The coaches should have disciplined Boobie when he was angry and threw his
shoulder pads against the wall, instead of ignoring him. Another example of bad sportsmanship
displayed by the Odessa coaching staff is when they talked bad about Boobie behind his back "most
of the other members of the Permian football staff privately called him

Personal Narrative: My Interest In Football
When I was young I always liked the sport of football. Growing up I always heard stories of my
father being such an extraordinary football player. Another reason I became interested in football
was that I wanted a sport that would provide me with exercise to keep my body in a good physical
state. Also, football has taught me good sportsmanship from starting off playing little league as a
child. To begin with, I became interested because my father was a state wide known football player,
but only played as far as high school varsity. People always told me many stories about how skilled
and smart he was at a running back position. Many colleges wanted to offer him full rides to play
NCAA. He became incarcerated when he was a teen and in college. I'm not sure of the name of the

football exercise plans and weight training taught me the things I needed to learn to keep my body

can learn in sports is learning to follow the rules. A soccer game is a great place to have fun, help lift
our teammates and practice good sportsmanship. But on that day, I learned to practice honesty,
compassion, integrity and fairness. The idea of sportsmanship in soccer is basically to play the game
fairly. Sportsmanship can be demonstrated in a variety of ways. First, a player needs to respect each
other at all times. I was able to keep a cool head and a positive attitude during the game. Second, I

Four Arguments For The Passage 'Sports Build Character?'
The passage "Sports Build Character?" concludes that contemporary sports do not build character
and do not teach important life lessons. On the other hand amateur sports do build character and

conclusion. 1. Exemplary Characteristics Argument If someone exemplify some of the worst

The sportsmanship acts that these two people have done are not denied however concluding that
these two acts show sportsmanship in amateur sport is a fallacy of hasty generalization. The arguer
generalizes by stating that since these two players have done newsworthy acts in amateur sports,
amateur sport as a whole shows sportsmanship. The problem here is that the sample is way too
small in order to make a conclusion about the sport itself. Therefore even though this argument is
valid it is not cogent. There many cases in contemporary sports that shows the sportsmanship of the
players. For example a soccer player ties the shoes of a goalkeeper in the other team in the middle of
the game or another soccer player admitting that he scored the goal with his hand to the referee.
Therefore if an act of one or two professional athletes showing sportsmanship does make a
representation of the sport as a hole then contemporary sports too show

The Importance Of A Healthy Lifestyle On Good Nutrition,...

  • 1. The Importance Of A Healthy Lifestyle On Good Nutrition,... CHAPTER 3 When health is absent, wisdom cannot reveal itself, art cannot become manifest, strength cannot be exerted, wealth is useless, and reason is powerless. –Herophiles 300 B.C. Growing up I had generally experienced good health. Sure I had my share of runny noses, upset stomachs and scraped knees but I was usually energetic, athletic, creative and optimistic about life. Health, fitness and well–being were important to my family. I came to value the importance of a healthy lifestyle: good nutrition, proper sleep, exercise and sportsmanship. Education was equally emphasized, "a sound mind in a sound body," my grandfather repeatedly told my sister and me. My grandfather, Pop–Pop, was a gregarious, tall and handsome man with a gleam in his eye who greatly valued education. I listened carefully to the conversations at the weekly Sunday night dinner table when we visited my grandparents because I always learned something new. Even though the prevailing rule was "children are seen but not heard," Pop–Pop always welcomed my questions about economics, politics, history, human nature, art and literature. In fact, he encouraged them. He was the smartest and wisest person I knew. I have never forgotten what my grandfather wrote in my autograph book when I was in second grade, "Good, better, best, never let it rest, until your good is your better and your better is your best." I had been a good student, curious about everything and I always wanted to better myself. There was no ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 2. Sportsmanship Essay Sportsmanship Sportsmanship is the character, practice, or skill of a person involved in sports. This includes the participant, the parents, the coaches, and all spectators. Sportsmanlike conduct includes fairness, courtesy, learning to be a good loser, being competitive without rude behavior, or experiencing any ill feelings toward the opponent. Too often in any sporting event, the purpose of the sport is forgotten. Winning has become overwhelmingly important to the adults involved. This attitude is inflicted on the youth. People of all ages should be allowed to fully embrace the challenge and fun of playing sports. Teaching, coaching, motivating, and winning are fine as long as the reason for the sport or activity is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Too many coaches and parents tend to forget the reason for sports for children. They get caught up in the excitement and competitiveness. Winning is the ultimate goal, at all costs. The cost is the effect this attitude has on the children. I have witnessed this behavior from coaches and parents, where they have actually embarrassed and humiliated young players in front of their peers. The negative effect this has on the athletes is obvious. They become aggressive, sometimes withdrawn and angry, rude, and inconsiderate. Sports are not just an activity. They form a stepping stone toward the future.
  • 3. Sportsmanship teaches children how to interact with peers, how to relate and interact with others. Sports can teach cooperation, sharing, and compassion. At a young age participation in sports introduces players to rules, and how to incorporate them into other aspects of life. A child must realize that losing has absolutely nothing to do with self–worth, that their personal value is not measured by winning or losing, but doing the best that they can in sports and life. It is important that children and adults be part of a group to feel acceptance, without the emphasis on winning. Self–confidence does not come from winning or losing, but how the outcome is handled. If you perform to your best ability, then you have won the only important game. Sportsmanship is what the activity ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

It is why we need more P.E.. The reasons we need more P.E. Is because many kids are obese, P.E. It Can help kids learn, and it teaches them important lessons. Why not have more P.E.. We should have more P.E. because it gives kids more time to get outside and play instead of not doing it at home because of homework. The fact is the obesity level in America is at an all time high so more P.E. would allow kids to get more exercise. It could show some kids what sports they like to do. Without PE. some kids might not get outside at all because they're playing video games or doing homework. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. Sportsmanship Christopher Kane MSA 560 Sportsmanship Essay Sports events are essentially social in character. They facilitate the coming together of people from various parts of the country, at a national level, and various parts of the world, at the international level. The dictionary defines sportsmanship as the face or practice of participating in sports or sport. It is also the conduct and attitude considered as befitting participants in sports, especially fair play, courtesy, striving spirit and grace in losing. The 'golden rule' for athletes is good sportsmanship. You demonstrate this when you show respect for yourself, teammates, opponents, coaches, officials and fans. Sportsmanship does not simply pertain to players, spectators, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Second even if the other team is losing their tempers, it doesn't mean you have to. We are not professional athletes but we are college players/fans so we must hold ourselves to a higher standard because people are always watching. Third, cheer on your team with positive statements and avoid trash talking the other team. Fourth when officials make a call, accept it gracefully even if it goes against you. Remember the referees may not be right every time, but they are people doing their best just as you are. Lastly, whether you win or lose, congratulate your opponents on a game well played. The next time anyone plays a sport, they can hold their head high after the event and look at themselves in the mirror and say, "I played my best and treated everyone with respect." • 6. The Importance Of Youth Sports Sport is viewed as an important aspect of youth development (Arthur–Banning, Wells, Baker & Hegreness, 2009). Participation in sports has shown positive results on health (Arthur–Banning, Wells, Baker & Hegreness, 2009). Youth sport participation is said to develop cognitive and physical skills, social skills, and teamwork (Arthur–Banning, Wells, Baker & Hegreness, 2009). Coaches and parents play major roles in determining the outcome of the experience (Ross, Mallet & Parkes, 2015). This is important as the popularity in youth sports is on the rise. There is an estimated 45 million child and adolescent participants in the United States (Merkel, 2013). Interestingly, physical, psychological, and cognitive development believe that one should be at least 6 years old prior to participating in organized team sports (Merkel, 2013). Additionally, an assessment of a child's individual sports readiness is suggested to be completed to determine whether a child is ready or not (Merkel, 2013). There has been a decline in prioritizing developmental skills (Arthur– Banning, Paisley & Wells, 2007). This includes sportsmanship and fair play, as there has been an overemphasis on competition and winning at all costs (Arthur–Banning, Paisley & Wells, 2007). The responsibility of increasing sportsmanship is on those adults with the power, such as referees (Arthur–Banning, Paisley & Wells, 2007). Referees have power to dictate outcomes in game situations (Arthur–Banning, Paisley & Wells, 2007). ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 7. Team Sport Research Paper Playing a team sport builds character because it teaches a person how to be respectful, how to work with others, and it teaches good sportsmanship. These qualities can play a very large role in life down the road. They can be very important for future jobs or activities that a person might do. Without these qualities a person could be at a severe disadvantage. Playing a team sport teaches respect. Being respectful applies to being nice to your opponents, coaches and referees. Respect is something that is taught only through other people and is earned through good efforts in game with your teammates. To show respect to an opponent is to show admiration to their abilities and acknowledge that they are also a good team and are just as good as you. To show respect to a referee is to agree with their calls and shake their hand after the game. To show respect to your coaches is listen to what they are saying in the huddle and follow their instructions during game. To have respect is such an important thing for people to have because it keeps that person in their place and keeps them from pretending to be someone that he or she is not. ... Many jobs that people have require the ability to work with others and those who can't are severely hindered. • 8. The Ethics Of Coaching Education Playing sports has come a long way from a simple game played in one's backyard for fun and pleasure, continuing on to professional athletes competing at high levels for glory, honour and prestige. An athlete with the correct articulated, ethical–decision making instruction has been able to help them advance within their sport. Ongoing coaching education has been gaining importance within our society. For those invested in athletics, there is a need to know what can result from athlete's behaviours in sport, with a focus on tennis. In particular, sportsmanship, gamesmanship, unwritten codes of behaviour, competitive orientation as ego or task driven, coaching orientation as an adult or athlete–centered, and the nature of sport are important ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Eitzen (2012) describes sport to be a rule–bound activity that should promote fair play, sportsmanship, and hard work, but there have been many unwritten rules, in particular within the sport of tennis that do the opposite effect. Within tennis, players that self–referee their own matches are required to make lines calls and should give their opponent the benefit of the doubt when unsure of where the ball landed. When an opponent or parent chants loudly this in turn can get inside a players head giving the opponent a psychological advantage. As a player competing in tennis, an opponent would stomp their feet loudly on the ground creating an impression that they were coming to the net, creating an unfair tactic in the eyes of the other player. As Stewart (2014) stated, if a player wants to win at any cost, rules and structures can be disregarded, creating an unfair victory for the opponent. Crone (1999) stated that an athlete focusing on the end–result or a win–at–all– costs attitude, there then becomes a de–emphasis on the process that in turn leads to less sportsmanship and promotes ... • 9. Soccer Informative Speech Essay Have you ever heard the saying, "have you ever wanted something so much it hurt"? Well, when I say it. I'm talking about literally hurting. Your legs are so sore, it feels like you can't take another stride, your so out of breath from chasing the ball around, and your so exhausted from last nights practice, your bed seems to be the most attractive thing to you right now. Three hour practices of straight running, push ups, and sit ups has its pros and cons. Even at times when you feel like you need a break, pushing yourself through it is what makes you a better player. I choose to inform you on soccer because I've played my whole life, from 5 years old until my senior year in high school, and its something I know about. The three main ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Understanding that and accepting it is a person with good sportsmanship. Where as if they were upset at their teammates for not doing their part and getting overly upset at the other team for playing good soccer is not good sportsmanship. At the end of the game, whether you have lost or have won you always shake hands with the other team. It is always necessary to let the other team know that it was a good well–played game whatever the outcome was. A person with good sportsmanship would clearly accept that fact. People that do have good sportsmanship are more easy to be around. It's almost like they're carefree and just play soccer for the fun of the game and not just for the win. Don't get me wrong, it is always better to win, but everyone loses at least once in his or her lives. Lastly, I think that dedication is another key component to playing yet again, not just soccer, but any sport. Having a teammate that isn't dedicated is like having an employee not show up to work every other day. You need that person to be there to get the job done. If you miss days of practice or even games, those are days that everyone is running an hour more than you and are gaining more endurance. It almost will seem like you can see the players that aren't as dedicated on the field because they don't care as much. An article called what motivates athletes by psychology today states that ... • 10. Importance Of Sportsmanship In Sports The two things that most attract me to Wellesley are the Chandler Pool and the Lulu Campus Center. Sportsmanship is one of my defining characteristics. Having been swimming for the past three years, the eight–lane professional Chandler Pool at Wellesley attracts me deeply. Swimming has both strengthened my perseverance and given me the spirit of collaboration and sportsmanship. I enjoy the feeling of racing in the water, pushing myself to the finish line. Swimming has given my body power, developed my deep thinking skills, and, most importantly, made me into a leader. As the captain of the swimming team at my high school, I have had tough moments leading the team, because most of my teammates are more senior than I and I am also an international student. But a loud voice without any action won't win over team members. I changed the situation by working harder and improving my communication skills. I practice longer hours than any other team member., and became the fastest one in the team, although I am not the most physically fit. I volunteered to swim the 500 yards freestyle and fought for my team to make the state meet. I constantly practice my communication skills and improve my English. Instead of giving direct orders to team members, I help and care for my team members. During my two–week medical leave, although my doctor advised me to stay at home and rest, I went to the swimming pool, helping the coach keep time, cheering for my team and handing them water and towels. ... • 11. Being A Successful Basketball Player Being a Successful Basketball Player As a child growing up sports has been a part of my life. There are many different sports that an athlete can play like basketball, baseball, and football. Basketball is one of my favorite sports and is also one of the highly paid sports of all time. There are three personality traits that make a successful basketball player. Those traits are determination, leadership, and sportsmanship. Determination is one of the main keys in being a successful basketball player. My definition of determination is someone who never gives up on anything in life. Michael Jordan was sick with the flu one night before a game. He still had determination to play in the NBA game that night with the flu. Another example of determination is when Stephen Curry was down three games in the NBA series, and he had determination to come back and win the NBA title two years in a row. • 13. Persuasive Letter About School Sports Research Dear, Mr. Mattern Schools sports are very helpful to young people, and should continued to be funded. Schools sports have been used to help children learn about education, physical activity, teamwork, and sportsmanship, and without school sports, children would never learn the skills to cooperate with their peers. Without the use of school sports, we would not have any of these great skills that all children need to learn to be successful. • 15. Sportsmanship And Sportsmanship Of A Team Sportsmanship All athletes can recognize that being a part of a team is hard. It is incredibly difficult to select a group of teenagers that will (1) all get along, (2) work together seamlessly, and (3) respect their coaches. The formula for the perfect team is unknowable. One negative spirit always exists to drag the team down, to deflate their motives and increase their egos; but that does not have any effect on the sportsmanship of a team. Sportsmanship does not rely on the cohesiveness of a team. It does not correlate with how many bonding trips a team endures or how many groups of friends are on the team. Gamesmanship is built on the principle that winning is everything. Athletes & coaches are encouraged to bend the rules wherever possible in order to gain a competitive advantage over an opponent & to pay less attention to the safety & welfare of the competition. Some of the key tenants of gamesmanship are:– 1. WINNING IS EVERYTHING. 2. It's only cheating if you get caught. 3. It is the referee's job to catch wrongdoing & the athletes & coaches have no inherent responsibility to follow the rules. 4. The ends always justify the means. Some examples of gamesmanship are :– 1. Under a sportsmanship model, healthy competition is seen as a means of cultivating personal honour, virtue & character. It contributes to a community of respect & trust between competitors & in society. The goal in sportsmanship is not simply to win, but to pursue victory with honour by giving one's best effort. Ethics in sport requires 4 key virtues:– Fairness , Integrity , Responsibility & Respect. 1. Fairness:– 1. All athletes & coaches must follow established rules & guidelines of their respective sport. 2. Teams that seek an unfair competitive advantage over their opponent create an uneven playing field which violates the integrity of the sport. 3. Peter Weir film of the Gallipoli Campaign from 1915–196 revolves around the mateship of Frank Dunne (Mel Gibson) and Archy Hamilton (Mark Lee) that binds them through sportsmanship and military nationalism. The Australian and New Zealand Army Corps (ANZAC) culture is typically based on the athleticism of soldiering culture, which allows Frank to become a "runner" of information dispatches during the campaign. More so, Archy's speed is deferred because of his patriotic desire to be on the "front lines" of the war. The mateship of Archy and Frank is based on the sportsmanship culture of Western Australia, which was a popular recruitment method for young men that joined ANZAC and, eventually, fought in the Gallipoli Campaign. Archy is a the blindly loyal nationalist that relies on his running skills to put peer pressure on Frank to join ANZAC. Frank initially declines, but the sportsmanship culture encourages a deep bond with a fellow short–distance runner in the effort to maintain mateship. However, there were many different soldiers from a wide variety of backgrounds, such as lower class backgrounds, which define a different and less romantic view of sportsmanship that Weir presents in this film. In reality, man men from the lower working classes joined ANZAC as a way to avoid poverty and low wage work. Archy and Frank's relationship is a heroic and romantic view of the Gallipoli Campaign, yet it does show the horror and carnage of "bloody murder" of young men, such as Archy, that died in this failed attack against the Turkish Army. In this manner, the film Gallipoli provides insight into some aspects of mateship and sportsmanship between Archy and frank that was certainly valid, but it does not provide a comprehensive and realistic understanding of the multiple perspectives of class status and identity that defined enlistment in ANZAC in WWI. ... • 34. The Importance Of Sportsmanship In Sports Sports, for thousands of years, have been a wonderful means for humankind to exercise one of our most basic instincts: competition with our fellow humans. Surrounding all types of sports is the idea of sportsmanship, the respect and ethical behavior shown to all participants of a contest. Sports fans around the world have all seen their share of sore losers, bad winners, and generally horrifying displays of poor sportsmanship. Yet, in all sports, there remain certain dogmas that only the most poorly–behaved sportsman would dare to violate. The spirit of the game, in many cases, is far more important than the outcome of the match, and a true competitor understands this. This is why many of our most beloved athletes are not always the most talented or outstanding performers; it is those who play with the purest heart, for the sake of the team, and with respect for all opponents. Truly transcendent athletes are those that are able to combine this intangible trait with world class skill. There are greater lessons to be learned from this besides being well–liked in the sporting community. Sports, and by extension, the athletes who play them, are able to go beyond cultural differences; surely there are stylistic differences between countries and regions, but in general, sports are played the same wherever you go. Similarly, all fans of a sport are able to appreciate incredible athletic feats or truly classy displays of sportsmanship. Simply put, sports have a way of bringing people together. In a day in age when settling cultural differences is of utmost importance, turning more towards sports is a reasonably viable way to bring the world closer together. The best example of a sport bringing two societies together today is the case of cricket contests between India and Pakistan. Tension and hostility have marked the relationship between the two countries for much of the last century. What has become known as cricket diplomacy has been able to bring an air of friendliness to talks between leaders. • 35. The Importance Of Sportsmanship In Sports Sportsmanship depends on societies that are built upon trust and respect between competitors. With professional sports turning into "the bread and circuses of a new Rome", fan's animosity directed toward referees has soared. States have now passed laws in fourteen states to protect these referees (Lipsyte 1–2). Having to defend authority figures screams that the world of sports is changing right before our eyes. The controversial subject of sportsmanship allows me to take a stand on my position that the unsportsmanlike behavior in athletics is taking over the realm of sports. Athlete's vocabulary do not consist of trustworthiness, responsibility, and accountability anymore; instead, games are consumed of bad behavior and severe consequences that youth see and then follow. The principles of sports– respecting barriers, competing within the guidelines, engaging together to reach set goals, complying with authority– is what embodied the American culture. The NBA suspended Marcus Camby for five games because of an occurrence that resulted in a $350,000 penalty; to make the situation worse, the incident caused his coach fifteen stiches that Camby provoked from his own actions. In addition to unsportsmanlike behavior represented by athletes, parents and coaches are "outcome–focused" instead of "process–focused" as well. Coaches and parents must display the right behavior, while remaining humble and graceful, if they expect their child to do the same. Bobby Knight was finally ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 36. The Importance Of Sportsmanship In High School Sports In a culture where sportsmanship is lacking, it is critical that stakeholders in high school athletics work together to reestablish sportsmanship and ethics to the forefront of education–based athletics. In fact, " The National Federation, the governing body for public high school sports, would like for the number one priority of high school athletics to be GOOD SPORTSMANSHIP" (as cited in Churdar, 2015, p. 2). Sportsmanship means respecting the opponent, the officials, and the game. There are many people and groups who influence the actions and beliefs of athletes either in a positive or negative manner, so it is important that these groups maintain a high view of sportsmanship and take proactive measures to ensure that good sportsmanship is a priority for high school sports. Stakeholders Coaches Coaches have a huge impact on the sportsmanship and behavior displayed by their team. According to Churdar (2015), "The coach bears the greatest burden of responsibility for sportsmanship. His influence upon the attitudes and behavior of the players, the student body, and the fans is unequalled." (p. 2). Coaches have a huge influence on the behavior and attitude of their athletes. According to John Wooden, "Profound responsibilities come with teaching and coaching. You can do so much good–or harm. It's why I believe that next to parenting, teaching and coaching are the two most important professions in the world" (as cited in Matheny, 2015, p. 99–100). This is a very weighty but true statement. The majority of athletes look to their coaches for guidance not only in athletics, but in life. Coaches have a profound impact on their players not only with their words, but with their actions. Coaches have the power and influence to lead their players to become more sportsmanlike by modeling ethical and moral behavior. Coaches have the duty and responsibility to be role models for the athletes. Matheny (2015) states, "We've been given the rare privilege and heavy responsibility of influencing young people on a daily basis, for better or for worse, for the rest of their lives" (p. 53). Coaches need to take this responsibility seriously and model ethical behavior at all times. Dealing with officials is one area that many ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 37. How Sportsmanship Can Be A Part Of A Team All athletes can recognize that being a part of a team is hard. It is incredibly difficult to select a group of teenagers that will (1) all get along, (2) work together seamlessly, and (3) respect their coaches. The formula for the perfect team is unknowable. One negative spirit always exists to drag the team down, to deflate their motives, and increase their egos; but that does not have any effect on the sportsmanship of a team. Sportsmanship does not rely on the cohesiveness of a team. It does not correlate with how many bonding trips a team endures or how many groups of friends are on the team. It is not entirely internal or entirely external. Sportsmanship is not simply the willingness of an athlete to respect other teams; it is an athlete's ability to respect their own team and, most importantly, his or her self. Sportsmanship is innate, reflecting an athlete's character. Neither winning nor losing can change it. Over the years, I have joined a multitude of teams. Ballet in preschool. Followed by basketball in kindergarten. Gymnastics. Softball. Soccer. I tried them all. However, volleyball as the only one to stick. I started in third grade with big, bulky knee pads and cute hair bows, and ceased playing during my sophomore year with strong, bulky thighs and years of floor burn scars. I had been contemplating my departure from the one sport I ever truly played for months. Something was missing. I did not love it, but I could not find it in myself to hate it. ... • 38. American Football and Good Sportsmanship "One who plays a sport fairly and loses gracefully" is how The Merriam Webster Dictionary defines sportsmanship. What is a sportsman? The definition seems to have undergone a big change over the years. If children follow the example set by today's athletes, the definition would equal a sore loser. High school sports should be a fun way to physically express yourself as an athlete, but at the same time learn some of life's lessons, like sportsmanship, discipline, and respect. In today's society, winning comes before everything, but if winning requires neglect of good sportsmanship, then nothing is gained in the long run. Sportsmanship matters not only in sports, but also in the rest of our everyday lives. In any competition, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The first instance of bad sportsmanship in the story is where Bissinger describes what was said to Boobie Miles during the previous week's football game. One of the Cooper Cougar's players said, "Com'on, you tough motherfucker, com'on lets see how tough you are!" and "you ain't nothin' but a goddamn pussy!" In the Youth Sportsman Code, these comments would definitely fall under "the making sarcastic remarks about opponents" and "the swearing at opponents" sections in the unsportsmanlike category. Bad sportsmanship occurs again in "Friday Night Lights" when the quarterback throws a bad pass as the last seconds tick off of the game clock. One of his teammates curses him, when the right thing to do would be to say something like, "good effort, better luck next time". "If the team is in a championship game and a star player violates a team sportsmanship rule which requires removal from the game, the rule must be enforced." ("Sportsmanship",3) The Youth Sports Institute says to reinforce sportsmanship behaviors and penalize unsportsmanlike behaviors ("Sportsmanship",3). The coaches should have disciplined Boobie when he was angry and threw his shoulder pads against the wall, instead of ignoring him. Another example of bad sportsmanship displayed by the Odessa coaching staff is when they talked bad about Boobie behind his back "most of the other members of the Permian football staff privately called him ... • 39. Personal Narrative: My Interest In Football When I was young I always liked the sport of football. Growing up I always heard stories of my father being such an extraordinary football player. Another reason I became interested in football was that I wanted a sport that would provide me with exercise to keep my body in a good physical state. Also, football has taught me good sportsmanship from starting off playing little league as a child. To begin with, I became interested because my father was a state wide known football player, but only played as far as high school varsity. People always told me many stories about how skilled and smart he was at a running back position. Many colleges wanted to offer him full rides to play NCAA. He became incarcerated when he was a teen and in college. I'm not sure of the name of the college, but the college got him out of prison while still trying to give him a full ... When on the field I need to be in control of my attitude because not being able to take a hit and trying to fight will get you put on the bench or getting mad at the referee for call a bad play on my team. Good sportsmanship will teach me how to be a good leader to help me lead my team in the correct direction when on the field or in practice when my coach can't. Furthermore, I love to exercise and football exercise plans and weight training taught me the things I needed to learn to keep my body in a healthy, strong physical state. When I played little league running and calisthenics was the main priority of exercising. Then when I got into high school running, weight training and eating healthy and big meals was top priority to get bigger and healthier to maintain strength and endurance. • 40. Football: Appropriate Analysis Whenever I am feeling gloomy, the best pick–me–up is playing soccer. On August, 29, 2015, I decided to hang out with friends at a nearby soccer field. One of the most important lessons a child can learn in sports is learning to follow the rules. A soccer game is a great place to have fun, help lift our teammates and practice good sportsmanship. But on that day, I learned to practice honesty, compassion, integrity and fairness. The idea of sportsmanship in soccer is basically to play the game fairly. Sportsmanship can be demonstrated in a variety of ways. First, a player needs to respect each other at all times. I was able to keep a cool head and a positive attitude during the game. Second, I often get agitated when officials make calls that ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 41. Four Arguments For The Passage 'Sports Build Character?' The passage "Sports Build Character?" concludes that contemporary sports do not build character and do not teach important life lessons. On the other hand amateur sports do build character and teach important life lessons. The author presents the reader with four arguments in support for the conclusion. 1. Exemplary Characteristics Argument If someone exemplify some of the worst elements of our society away from the playing field then they have far from exemplary characters Professional athletes exemplify some of the worst elements of our society away from the playing field ________________________________________________________________________ ∴ Professional athletes have far from exemplary characters The "exemplary characteristics" argument although valid (accepting the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The sportsmanship acts that these two people have done are not denied however concluding that these two acts show sportsmanship in amateur sport is a fallacy of hasty generalization. The arguer generalizes by stating that since these two players have done newsworthy acts in amateur sports, amateur sport as a whole shows sportsmanship. The problem here is that the sample is way too small in order to make a conclusion about the sport itself. Therefore even though this argument is valid it is not cogent. There many cases in contemporary sports that shows the sportsmanship of the players. For example a soccer player ties the shoes of a goalkeeper in the other team in the middle of the game or another soccer player admitting that he scored the goal with his hand to the referee. Therefore if an act of one or two professional athletes showing sportsmanship does make a representation of the sport as a hole then contemporary sports too show ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
