2. WHAT HAVE YOU LEARNED FROM
YOUR AUDIENCE FEEDBACK?
As I had previously created a draft for my trailer, I was able to upload this to YouTube
and share on my blog, which gave me the opportunity to collect responses and a
reaction from my peers indicating the strengths of my trailer and some areas which I
could improve on. The feedback from my trailer was constructive yet it gave me an
insight into how the conventions I had used were viewed by the audience, allowing
me to make changes and improve my trailer to be viewed as more exciting and
thrilling to fans of the horror/thriller genre, to ultimately appeal to my target
audience.

YOUR AUDIENCE FEEDBACK?
The majority of feedback I received was from YouTube, in which the audience picked
up on common conventions that were missing and areas which I could use. A
common improvement mentioned was that I could add some titles such as 'Black
Forest Productions Presents' and 'Coming Soon' to my trailer as this could be a
feature that could increase suspense and make the trailer appear more professional as
an overall project. Although I had already planned to add these titles in at a later
stage, it gave me an insight into how the conventions of real media products are
portrayed to the audience and the impact that a missing convention could have upon
the overall success of the trailer. By adding these titles to my trailer, I feel that my
overall project appears much more professional and creates a suspense in-between
the scenes/shots I have included.

I also received positive feedback via YouTube such as ‘I love the different shots that
you’ve used’, this comment allowed me to build upon the shots that I had already
used, encouraging me to extend the length of the shots such as the close up of the
dripping tap, to create suspense as I felt that by using a select amount of longer shots
could increase suspense, in comparison to using a wide variety of shorter clips.

I also was given some verbal feedback from my teachers which I found useful as they
suggested that I could improve the lighting in some of my scenes to add to my mise-
en-scene, showing a contrast between scenes shot in the night and the day time as
this could help to highlight my narrative and link to genre conventions. Also, it was
suggested that I could improve the quick cuts towards the end of my trailer to make
them link more closely to the heartbeat sound effects, as this could create more
suspense towards the climax at the end of the trailer. I took this feedback on board
and then spent time improving the editing of these cuts, although this was a time
consuming process, I feel that this added to the tone and suspense of my trailer,
allowing it to be more successful from the audience’s perspective.
