1. Tell me in nomore than20 words, what
is your FMP idea?
My project will be a small clip for a videoproject and all the
advertising/promotionalmaterialthatgoes behindit.
Why have youdecidedto make it? The reason I havetook this line down my FMP is because it is
a particular subject that interestsme andis somethingthatI
find the mostenjoyable outof all the other subjects. I hope
notonly to learn butto evolve whilst workingon this project.
This is somethingin which I’mlooking towardsa career for.
So, the level of importance is very high.
What about yourproject makesit
importantto you?
This project is importanttome because it is givingme the
independence tocreate somethingwhich requires a lot of
effort buta lot of enjoymenttoo. It is creating the experience
andbeing behind the camera thatI consider to be most
enjoyable. Whilst I have notstartedthe project yet. I have
lookedat a variety of unique shotswhich I want toinclude in
this film. Bringing somethingnew to the screen that not
many people think aboutunlessthey havea deep
imaginationis what makesfilmmaking the mostimportant
aspect in my work. However, it is not just the filmmaking
because I will be in some of the shotsin which I will haveto
trustsomeonewith the positionof co-filmmakerbut it’s
mainly the direction. I will be directing throughthenvarious
shotsof what I want to happen. Thiswill make what I wan
come alive througha lot of hardworking. That is what I am
lookingforward to the most. Throughoutthesepasttwo
years I havebeen working onprint, audio, andvideo game-
basedprojects. As well asothers. Whilst I consider my skills
to havedeveloped further throughthepractise of these
projects. With thisFMP I get to do somethingin which I enjoy
andhold independenceover because its my chosenchoice of
doingvideo.
Outline some of the initial influenceson
your idea/work andsome potential
researchtargets (remember, research
isn’tjust a paper-based activity)
In termsof my research, I havea lot planned which I have
took from lookingat inspirationaldirectors like Quentin
Tarantinoand Spanishdirector AlfonsoCurron. Both
directors who explore the films they make in a whole
different way to others. The importanceof cinematography,
editing andcamera work is very present in their films. Their
films also have a sense of belonging like it lookslike they have
made it because it’s in a similar style to all their other films.
That is somethingI want tocreate with this film. Something
new in which I can call it my ownwhether it is a camera
technique or somethingelse. Itis justaboutbeing as original
andinventive as possible. I have also been watching the sin
city films in which I can see howthe cinematography has
been handledthere. It is not justa monochromefilm. The
cinematography hasbeen handledprofessionally andlike sin
city. This will makeit the USP (uniqueselling point)in my
audience’seyes. Interms of posters, I have my own business
outsideof college in which I do posterwork for various
clients. So, I had a lot of inspirationand ideas already set
ahead before we startedour project. I have givenexamples
2. of the postersthat haveinspired me the mostfor thisproject
and brief overview on why I have picked thoseone is in
particular.
What effect do youwant tohave on
your audience when they see your
project?
Within the promotionalandadvertisingI want the audience
to feel overwhelmed andto feel educatedto the various
ways in which a film is sold. The mainemotion thatI want my
audience to feel when watching the trailer of my film is to
feel confused. Not toomuchof it but justin variouspartsof
the trailer. This makes the audience more engagedand want
to get into the story even more. However, it could also bore
them, makingthem lose interest. Sothat’sa gamble in itself.
Watching tv showssuch as ‘Psychoville’ and‘leagueof
gentlemen’ when I was younger. I havegrown up with rather
dark humourandI consider this tobe the typeof film that
will fit in well with all the other ideas that I haveplannedfor
it.
Describe the tone/mood/style of your
project [whichproduction
techniques/characteristicsare you
employing?]
I want the tone of the clip thatI am filming to be grey and
miserable. Itsset during the 80’s. So, it’sreally puttingthe
empathiseon the harsh, workingclass times that the main
characters have toput upwith because they are within that
age group. Lookingat Edgar Wright’s‘Shaunof the dead’,
(2004)youcan really see how dull andsad an average middle
class working citizen is. This is shownjust throughhowcausal
andunfun the actionsbeing demonstratedin a small section
of the film. With the trailer I want a large portionof the
beginningof the trailer tobe in black andwhite. This was
takeninspirationfrom films suchas Casino Royal(2006)and
Sin city (20005). Themonochromegivesoff a mysterious
tone that’smakesthe film even more modern(depending on
the quality of the shot)despite the fact thatall films were
black andwhite at one point. Overall, I want the film to focus
on dark pallets and whilst havingsubtleshadesof light in
various scenes. Showingthe audience thatworld isn’talways
dark. Despite how muchit lookslike it. The equipmentthat I
am usingis the right stuff but I’mgoing tobook out further
stuff like tripodand otherstuff. My camera is canon600D
with a nifty fifty lens which makes the shotwider and the
camera itself is particularly goodfor darkernight shots. So,
this is the right equipmentfor it.
Why have youdecidedto make your
project in thisstyle?
The reason I havedecided to do my FMP project in this style
is because it is the style thatsuitsme the mostandwhat I
consider tobe the mostexperimental. I want to try andtouch
uponall genres. Whether its action, romance, or something
psychological. Sothat it can twists the story with each turn. I
want all these genre elements to be clear in the trailer. The
main genre I would place it in is comedic horror. I think this
genre is the onethat worksbest for me because I feel like
there is a lot, I can do with it. Constantly flippingthe genre
3. makesit even moreinteresting in my eyes. I want the trailer
to demonstratea seriousside to begin with and thenturn
more into a comedy as the trailer goes on. I want totry and
make thistonal shift look as noticeable as possible. Having
the audience notice the developmentof the film throughthe
trailer alone will be a big achievementin my eyes. This could
run intothe danger of lookingtoo slapstick, butit dependson
how it will all be planned out.
