Dollfuss Engelbert was the right-wing Austrian chancellor who was assassinated in 1934 by Austrian Nazis during their attempted coup to take power in Austria. It is unclear if Hitler ordered the coup, though the Austrian Nazis hoped he would support them. Mussolini, who had close ties to Dollfuss and distrusted Hitler at the time, ordered Hitler not to get involved in Austria. In response to the coup attempt, the British, French, and Mussolini governments formed the Stresa Front to guarantee Austrian sovereignty.
