Written Summary of Ideas Generation
My newspaper magazine will be called The Salford Star. The idea of the newspaper is to be a local
magazine aimed at the people of Salford, including human interest stories, and also factual stories,
to entertain the people of the city, whilst also informing them of events going on. The first page of
the newspaper will include a human interest story, about locals of the town, which will intrigue the
reader to buy themagazine. The story will be about burglaries throughout homes of elderly people;
this story will provoke a reaction from the reader as they are locals from Salford, so this will inform
everyone of how to help deter people from burgling, especially to help older people. The story will
be very brief, and will encourage the reader to turn to page 4 of the newspaper. The second page
will include a similarly controversial story which will provoke a reaction from the reader. This story
will be a lot lighter than the first, with a much happier ending. The story will be a festive story, about
a dog going missing, but then coming home just in time for Christmas. This story will be a feel good
story, with a happy ending. The newspaper will follow the newspaper conventions, including the
masthead in the top left corner, and the conventional black red and white house style. The magazine
will have its own logo, to make the magazine more memorable and also so that the masthead stands
out more on the page. The typeface I’m going to use is Times New Roman because it is a classical
newspaper font and it is also easily read, by the reader which will make the magazine look neat and
tidy.
The photography used will be linked into the articles. The front page image will use the rule of
thirds, so that the most important elements of the picture are at the main focal points so that they
are effective to the reader. The use of photography in a local newspaper is key, as it makes the
magazine more fun, and lively whilst also reaching out to many different audiences, especially
younger people who prefer to look at the images before choosing which part of the newspaper they
are going to read. Guttenberg’s design principle will be used on the front page, so that the masthead
will be in the primary optical area, and where the reading gravity pulls your eyes from the top left to
the bottom right, the image is glanced over to the subheading of the article which is reporting the
image. The image will be of an elderly lady/man in her home, who had been burgled recentlytelling
her story. Also, on the front page there will be advertisements. The second page photography
similarly will be specific to the article just to give more information. The image will be of two young
girls, with their dog who had gone missing, who are now happy that he has returned home. Just in
time for Christmas. Photoshop will be used on all photography in the local newspaper, just to give
the photographs more colour to make them brighter, bolder and livelier. Also, on both pages the
images will be landscape as I believe that the photographs look neater, especially with the article
columns placed around the image symmetrically.
The language used in the magazine will be a mixture of both formal and informal language. The
formal language used will be for the more intense, serious stories. Mainly used on the first page, this
is because it will give the information of the events that happened briefly, before telling the reader
to turn to the specific page for the in depth account. Because the story about the burglaries will be
serious the more formal language will be used. The language used on the second page will be less
formal; this is because the story will be less important. Because the stories which are not as serious
can be seen as less interesting, with the more informal language, the reader can relate to it using
colloquial language and slang making it more fun and also more personal. Also because this story
includes children, it will intrigue a younger audience also, so the writing will be much more simpler.
