The newspaper's layout follows typical conventions, with the masthead at the top left and story continuing at the bottom right. Page two discusses British soldiers in a 1915 photograph and profiles different politicians and a former benefit claimant who now has a job. The page uses photos from 1915 in black and white and modern outdoor shots.

1. The Sun
Characters – Page One
The only character on the front page is John Terry. John terry is a well known footballer,
which is most probably why ‘The Sun’ has used it to put it on the front page. As he is so well
known his followers will want to by the copy and read the story about him. John Terry’s
stereotype is shown through his attire in the small photo of him, and also by the narrative.
The headline of the newspaper is ‘Terry’s £10M Home Win” which is representative of
footballers as they are expected to have a lot of money, and also have wealthy houses.
The body language on the little photograph of Terry shows that he is celebrating on the
football pitch, which is also representative of the story as he is celebrating his 10M win on
his home in which he bought for 1.8m, spent 4m on refurbishments and sold for 16m.
Narrative Events – Page One
The headline of the page shows the reinstatement to the equilibrium, and that as a
conclusion is announced as john terry has sold his property and earned his profit.
Iconography – Page One
The suns front page is consistent if you look back throughout the recent history of the suns
newspaper. The large masthead is ironically at the top of the page on the left hand side
which is easily recognisable for the public who are looking to buy. There is a mixture of fonts
on the front page, which makes the newspaper less formal, and makes each individual
subheading stand out.
The colour scheme is black white and red of the newspaper. However the large
advertisements on the front page show some colours which make the advertisement stand
out.
Setting – Page One
The first image is an overhead/bird’s eye view of John Terry’s 16 M pound house. There is
also a smaller image of the man himself, on the football field celebrating. The images fit in
with the narrative as this is what the newspapers main story is about.
Technical and Audio codes
The camera use on the photographs on the front page, have both been professionally shot.
The overhead image of the house has a natural lighting as it was set out doors. The way it is
taken in the air shows that the photographer had taken it out of a plane/helicopter.
Similarly, the smaller photograph of John Terry is on the football field, which was an action
photo, of john terry celebrating in the match. The newspaper uses the Guttenberg’s rule of
thirds as the masthead is in the top corner of the page and then the bottom of the story is in
the bottom right hand corner of the page, so the reader’s eyes will glance over the image
and the headline.

3. Characters – Page Two
The first set of the characters on the page are about British soldiers. The photograph on the
page is taken in 1915 and shows an Anzac soldier carrying his comrade. The image is a good
representation of soldiers, as the comment next to the image starts with the word ‘brave’
On each side of the page, it shows symmetry as on the left side is about Nick Clegg who is a
conservative, and on the right side it shows Bill Grimsey who is on the labour side. Both
images show the politicians to be smiling which is showing a good representation of
politicians.
Another character on the page is ‘Emanul Haque’ who is one of the notorious workers on
Benefit Street. This shows a good representation of him, as the programme shows people
who are living on a street in Birmingham who are claiming benefits, however showing him to
have a job defeats his stereotype, and a positive representation.
Narrative Events – Page Two
The narrative is in different orders. The top of the page is about brave soldiers who have
fought in the war. Down the two sides are different politicians, whilst at the bottom/middle
of the page is about people claiming benefits.
The first narrative uses Todorov’s stage 2 of equilibrium. Stage 2, says that there is a
disruption to the equilibrium by an action or crisis, and the narrative does not reflect the
positive image of the soldiers, as the narrative is about airbrushing images, and therefore
not calling them brave.
The narrative on Benefit Street is stage 4 of Todorov’s theory. The character attempt to
repair the disruption, obstacles needs to be overcome to restore order. As prior to this
narrative it says that Britain is capping on benefit claimants, and the character of Benefit
Street is no longer on benefits and has a job.
Iconography
The same colour scheme is used from the front page, throughout which makes it consistent,
and also makes the newspaper look neat.
Setting
The first photograph was taken in Gallipoli in 1915; in the image is it black and white as it is
an old photograph.
Another photograph on the page is a mid shot of Emanul Haque who is of Benefit Street. The
photograph beside it is a photograph of a man taking a photograph on a phone of people
stood next to a sign which says James Turner St. which is also known as Benefit Street.
Technical and Audio Codes
The first photograph is taken a long time ago which is why it is in black and white. The
photograph is a landscape image which shows the background and also the soldier carrying
his comrade in the foreground.
The second photograph is taken outside in natural lighting, and is a mid shot of the character
of Benefit Street.
