1. Newspaper idea report
The main story for my newspaper is going to be a human interest story about a man who
has rescued a child from a fire. I have chosen this as the main story as it is quite a positive
story, rather than basing my newspaper on a negative one. It is also a story which I will be
able to set up with relative ease, making it very practical to feature in my newspaper. For
this story I am going to take a mid-shot of a man, which will be quite large as the main
stories on newspapers usually have a large image to go with it.I am going to place this story
on the axis of orientation, using a large headline as this is the main story which I believe will
attract readers.
As sport is a very popular topic within newspapers, I am going to feature a football story on
my newspaper. Manchester United is a popular team within Manchester and has a large fan
base, so making this newspaper story is relevant for a local newspaper. I am going to base
this story on the Manchester United ground being renamed. I will be able to take long shots
of Old Trafford which I will place on the cover of my newspaper, followed by images of fans
inside the stadium which I will place on the second page along with the story. This image will
be quite large as sport is a popular topic and so it makes it easier for readers to see this
story and decide to read the newspaper.
I am also going to feature a small story about a man who has been arrested for armed
robbery as crime stories are very common in newspapers. For this story I am going to take a
close up image of a man and put this on the front page, and then carry the newspaper story
on the second page with a long shot image of the local place he has robbed. I will place this
story in the weak fallow area or terminal area as this is a smaller story within my
newspaper.
Finally, I am going to use a story about a girl that has gone missing after a night out in
Manchester. Missing person’s stories are regular in newspapers to raise awareness, and as
she has gone missing locally it will be relevant to my newspaper. A close up image or mid
shot of this girl will fit the story as it will make her recognisable to people who read the
newspaper. The image for this will be placed on the front page. I will place this story in the
weak fallow area or terminal area as this is a smaller story within my newspaper.
There will be iconography of Manchester on my newspaper as Manchester United are a
recognisable football team that people immediately associate with the city of Manchester. I
am also taking photographs of Old Trafford, which is a key famous building, these images
will both establish where my newspaper is based.
In the armed robbery story I am going to take images in Manchester city centre of the scene
the crime was committed. This creates iconography of Manchester as it is a popular tourist
destination which is very iconic of Manchester. This will make it clear that the newspaper is
local to Manchester also.
2. The colour scheme I am going to use throughout my newspaper will be red and white, using
black text. The masthead I have designed includes these colours so for my newspaper to
look professional I will remain with this colour scheme throughout. These colours signify
Manchester as they represent the colour of England and it is also linked with Manchester
and Salford, making the colour scheme relevant to my newspaper.
As my newspaper will be quite informal, I will use a lot of images over the two pages. The
tone of the newspaper will be professional however I will make the articles simple to read.
The main headline will be bold to catch attention; readers will be able to relate to this “local
hero” story as they will be local to Manchester.
