1. Newspaper ideas report
As my newspaper will be quite informal, I will use a lot of images over the two pages. The tone of the
newspaper will be professional however I will make the articles simple to read. The main headline
will be bold to catch attention; readers will be able to relate to this “local hero” story as they will be
local to Manchester. The colour scheme I am going to use throughout my newspaper will be red and
white, using black text. The masthead I have designed includes these colours so for my newspaper to
look professional I will remain with this colour scheme throughout. These colours signify Manchester
as they represent the colour of England and it is also linked with Manchester and Salford, making the
colour scheme relevant to my newspaper.
The main story for my newspaper is going to be a human interest story about a man who has
rescued a child from a fire. I have chosen this as the main story as it is quite a positive story, rather
than basing my newspaper on a negative one. It is also a story which I will be able to set up with
relative ease, making it very practical to feature in my newspaper. For this story I am going to take a
mid-shot of a man with the child he has saved, which will be quite large as the main stories on
newspapers usually have a large image to go with it. I am going to place this story on the axis of
orientation, using a large headline as this is the main story which I believe will attract readers.
As sport is a very popular topic within newspapers, I am going to feature a football story in my
newspaper. Manchester United is a popular team within Manchester and has a large fan base, so
making this newspaper story is relevant for a local newspaper. I am going to base this story on the
Manchester United ground being renamed. I will be able to take long shots of Old Trafford which I
will use as a feature story on the cover of my newspaper, followed by images of fans inside the
stadium which I will place on the second page along with the story. This image will be quite large as
sport is a popular topic and so it makes it easy for readers to see this story and buy the newspaper.
There will be iconography of Manchester within this story as Manchester United are a recognisable
football team that people associate with the city of Manchester. I am taking photographs of Old
Trafford, which is a key famous building which will establish where my newspaper is based.
As crime stories are very common in newspapers, the two smaller stories that I am also going to
feature in my newspaper will be about a man who has been arrested for armed robbery and a girl
who has gone missing after a night out in Manchester. For the robbery story I am going to take a
close up image of a man, making him look extremely villainous and then put this on my second page
with text either side of it as it is a smaller story. Finally, missing person’s stories are regular in
newspapers to raise awareness and as the girl has gone missing locally it will be relevant to my local
newspaper. A long shot of the girl will fit the story as it will make her recognisable to people who
read the newspaper. I am going to feature this story on the second page of my newspaper in the
weak fallow area, using a black boarder to make it stand out.
