DIGIPACK ANALYSIS
This is the album artwork for Red Hot Chili Peppers 2011 album ‘I’m With You’. The front cover is a photograph of a pink
and white pill with a fly on it. This cover was made by British artist Damien Hirst , the lead singer Anthony Kiedis
described the album's cover art by saying, "It's an image. It's art. Iconic. We didn't give it its meaning but it's clearly
open to interpretation."
I would be describe this artwork as being influenced from the minimalist movement, especially because of the use of
white space and lack of colour (only black, white and pink used).
Both the front and back cover make use of white space which helps give the cover a more modern feel but also gives it
a sense of elegance. White space also helps emphasise an object/main image.
This is the album artwork depicts a red library book with a minimalist drawing of a weeping minotaur of Greek
mythology drawn on its cover, with some constellations being seen around the drawing. This is metaphorical album art-
representing ideas that ‘we are all the monsters, we are all half human half beast. We are trapped in this maze of this
past’ says lead singer Thom Yorke. To me, the hand drawn illustration gives the cover a scrapbook feel and I like that the
effect this gives is simplistic also in giving the album a more personal feel to it.
The album cover is quite ambiguous however, the way the scrapbook is surrounded by black gives the cover a sense of
mystery but similarly to white space- the black space connotes elegance.
Combining red and black gives a bold and aggressive colour scheme which makes the cover more eye catching and
iconic.
