Why the Us Entered World War 1
{text:bookmark–start} Why the United States Entered World War I {text:bookmark–end} The US
entered the war for a variety of reasons. Here are some summaries of explanations. There were
unauthorized German submarines along the US East coast. Germany's resumption of unrestricted
submarine warfare in the spring of 1917 provided the final straw for US politicians, and America
declared war. The first and foremost answer would be the sinking of the Lusitania, an British
cruise/transport ship, bound for Britain from New York. The German U–boat ring sought to sink all
supply ships headed for Britain in order to starve the island. It sank the Lusitania as part of its
efforts. 1195 people died, including 128 Americans. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The telegraph was intercepted by British Intelligence and transmitted to the American government
by the Brits. This infuriated Americans. It was the same sort of alliance that plunged Europe into
war. Other WikiAnswers Contributors agree: The clincher was "discovery" of the Zimmerman
Telegram (it was de–coded by the British and forwarded to US diplomats; with obvious self–interest
on the part of the Brits). {text:bookmark–start} Answer {text:bookmark–end} Entry of the United
States America's policy of insisting on neutral rights while also trying to broker a peace resulted in
tensions with both Berlin and London. US president Woodrow Wilson repeatedly warned that he
would not tolerate unrestricted submarine warfare, and the Germans repeatedly promised to stop. In
January 1917 the German military decided that unrestricted submarine warfare was the best gamble
to choke British supplies before the American troops could arrive in large numbers. A proposal to
Mexico to join the war was exposed in February, bringing war closer. (See Zimmerman telegram).
After further U–boat attacks on American merchant ships, Wilson requested that Congress declare
war on Germany, which it did on April 6, 1917 (see: Woodrow Wilson declares war on Germany on
Wikisource). The House approved the war resolution 373–50, the Senate 82–6, with opposition

America 's Changing Foreign Policy
The Monroe Doctrine was an assertion of President James Monroe regarding U.S. foreign policy in
1823. In the Doctrine, the President denounced European powers' any further attempt to colonize
and exploit Latin American countries, while promising not to interfere any existing European
colonies in the Americas. The Monroe Doctrine was one of the greatest turning points in American
foreign policy as it marked the beginning of America's rapid development as a world power. Over
the past two hundred years of history, the meaning of the Monroe Doctrine had been altered multiple
times in order to suit America's changing foreign policy. For example, in the 1840s, President James
Polk used the Monroe Doctrine as an excuse to annex ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In addition, after the defeat of Napoleon in September 1815, three European nations – Austrian
Empire, Prussia, and Russia – formed the Holy Alliance, also known as the Grand Alliance, to
endorse and strengthen monarchism. The rapid growth of monarchy in Europe in the 1810s greatly
threatened the United States and its democratic political structure. Amid such a crisis, the United
States, under the leadership of President Monroe, issued the Monroe Doctrine in 1823 without
hesitance. This action suggested the braveness of the young United States as a nation in defending
democracy and fighting the growing imperialism of powerful European countries. In addition to the
threat of the reviving European monarchism, the isolationism endorsed by President Washington
was also a driving force of the Monroe Doctrine. In 1796, in President Washington's Farewell
Address, he warned the United States of the danger to ally with foreign countries. The Monroe
Doctrine implemented ideas mentioned in the Farewell Address by drawing an invisible line
between the Americas and the Eastern hemisphere, freeing the U.S. from any possible political
alliance with foreign countries. In the political cartoon "Uncle Sam – That's A Live Wire" by W. A.
Rogers, the man on the right, who represented the United States, drew a line on the ground and

Cinco de Mayo, also known as the Anniversary of the Battle...
Cinco de Mayo, also known as the Anniversary of the Battle of Puebla, is a national holiday in
Mexico that commemorates the 1862 Mexican victory over the French forces of Napoleon III in
Puebla, Mexico. This holiday, celebrated on the fifth of May, has deep roots in Mexican culture, but
in American–Mexican culture as well. Cinco de Mayo serves as a proud reminder of an unlikely
victory, as well as a day to express and cherish Mexican pride and heritage.
After suffering from numerous wars, including the Mexican–American war and the Mexican civil
war of 1858, the 19th century country of Mexico was nearly reduced to bankruptcy and
impoverishment. This left the country unable to pay back the many foreign debts that had
accumulated over ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
To pay homage to this vital day, the city of Puebla hosts a re–enactment of the battle, a massive civic
parade, and various festivities that include dancing and singing. The Reconstrucción de la batalla
allows volunteers and spectators alike to get a brief glimpse of the fighting that occurred on that
historic day, without of course the great amounts of sacrifice and bloodshed. The reenactment
consists of blank firing weapons, uniforms, and militaristic strategies that all stay true to the era.
Puebla also organizes an annual civic parade, which now includes over 20,000 participants. School
children, military, and floats are all included in this parade and are accompanied by mariachi bands,
folkloric dancers, and colorful decorations.
While Cinco de Mayo is an important holiday for those living in Puebla, it is also a major event for
the millions of Mexican–Americans living in the United States. Although practically every part of
the United States celebrates Cinco de Mayo in some form or the other, the Southwestern regions of
America are home to the largest celebrations of Cinco de Mayo. In cities such as Los Angeles, San
Jose, San Francisco, and San Antonio, a large proportion of the population has Mexican origins.
Many people hang up banners advocating these special holiday, and school districts organize lessons
and special events to educate their pupils about the culture of Americans of Mexican

Essay Woodrow Wilson's Peace Agreement from WWI
In 1917, the United States entered World War I on the side of the Allies. Previously angered by such
events as the sinking of "Lusitania", American President Woodrow Wilson led the nation to war after
learning of the Zimmermann Telegram and Germany's resumption of UNRESTRICTED
SUBMARINE WARFARE! As the war came to a close with an Allies victory, President Woodrow
Wilson devised a core list of points which stressed self–determination of people, free trade, and
open diplomacy. Wilson believed that it could serve as the basis for a peace agreement between the
fighting European nations and the United States. Going before a session of Congress on January 8,
1918, Wilson outlined American intentions and presented his ideas as the ... Show more content on

and Britain before the U.S. entered the war. However, this point was useful in that it encouraged
Germany to surrender as this among other points was very promising and seductive. Germany had
been blockaded by Great Britain and virtually starved of trade since 1914. In his third point, Wilson
called for the removal of economic barriers between countries in the League of Nations. It means
the destruction of all special commercial agreements, each putting the trade of every other nation in
the League on the same basis to equalize trade between nations. This point naturally contemplates
fair understanding as to the distribution of raw materials among nations. In WW1, America was the
most powerful export economy in the world. In any trading situation of the time, especially after the
hit European economies took during the war, America would ultimately dominate. This excessive
trade domination of the time bolstered America's economy and set the stage for the "Roaring
Twenties". Wilson's fourth point called for nations to reduce their armies to the bare minimum.
Militarism, after all, was one of the driving forces that caused the war in the first place. Aggressive
nations such as Germany raced to build their armies to be large enough to be imperialists and world
police, leading to conflict among world powers, and eventually war. This idea was not obtained
because nations such as Britain and France had empires to

American Involvement in Ww1
World War I (WWI), which was predominantly called the World War or the Great War from its
occurrence until 1939, and the First World War or World War I thereafter, was a major war centered
in Europe that began on 28 July 1914 and lasted until 11 November 1918. It involved all the world's
great powers, which were assembled in two opposing alliances: the Allies (centered on the Triple
Entente of the United Kingdom, France and Russia) and the Central Powers (originally centered on
the Triple Alliance of Germany, Austria–Hungary and Italy). These alliances both reorganized (Italy
fought for the Allies), and expanded as more nations entered the war. Ultimately more than 70

Anglo–French trenches were only intended to be "temporary" before their forces broke through
German defenses. Both sides tried to break the stalemate using scientific and technological
advances. On 22 April 1915 at the Second Battle of Ypres, the Germans (violating the Hague
Convention) used chlorine gas for the first time on the Western Front. Algerian troops retreated
when gassed and a six–kilometer (four–mile) hole opened in the Allied lines that the Germans
quickly exploited, taking Kitchener's' Wood. Canadian soldiers closed the breach at the Second
Battle of Ypres. At the Third Battle of Ypres, Canadian and ANZAC troops took the village of
Passchendaele. At the start of the war, the German Empire had cruisers scattered across the globe,
some of which were subsequently used to attack Allied merchant shipping. The British Royal Navy
systematically hunted them down, though not without some embarrassment from its inability to
protect Allied shipping. For example, the German detached light cruiser SMS Emden, part of the
East–Asia squadron stationed at Tsingtao, seized or destroyed 15 merchantmen, as well as sinking a
Russian cruiser and a French destroyer. However, most of the German East–Asia squadron–
consisting of the armored cruisers Scharnhorst and Gneisenau, light cruisers Nürnberg and Leipzig

The War I Was The United States Become A Super Power
World War I was the war that shaped the future of the 20th century and is what helped make the
United States become a super power. Since its Independence the United States had taken a stance of
isolationism from conflicts in Europe and Asia. To further assert their stance on isolationism the
United States passed the Monroe Doctrine in 1823 which stated that any attempt by a European
nation to colonize or interfere with North and South American would be seen as an act of
aggression. The United States isolationist stance would allow them to expand their borders and
industrialize their country as well as their military.
Neutrality and isolationism were essential after achieving our independence. George Washington
issued his Proclamation of Neutrality in May 1793. George Washington proclamation stemmed from
the fact that our country was to young and military to week, to get involved in any sort of
engagement. The ended of the 19th century showed the quick industrialization of the United States
both economically and militarily. With revolution stirring up in Cuba Theodore Roosevelt built up
our navy and was key in the victory over Spain. With a booming economy and a strong army and
navy the U.S. was beginning to make its mark as a world power. However, even after the Spanish
American War 1898 the United States still remained isolationist but did trade with European nations
as well as Latin America. During the 20th century the United States would finally make it self–

The Attack On Pearl Harbor Essay
It is well documented in United States history books that during the First World War, the United
States had an isolationist and neutral stance towards the war in Europe. However, according to these
texts, this all changed on February 24, 1917 when the United States received a decoded German
telegram message from Britain. This message read that Germany requested Mexico to join their side
and declare war on the United States if their northern neighbor joined the war against Germany. It is
said that this was the most important event that pushed the neutral United States over the edge to
join the Allied Powers. It is even compared in importance to the attack on Pearl Harbor which
pushed the United States in joining the Allies in the Second World War! However, this is simply not
the case. There were a multitude of more import reasons which, when looking at the complete
picture, show that the Zimmerman Telegram had much less of an impact than previously thought.
It all started in early 1917, the First World War was in full swing and there appeared to be no end in
sight. The Central Powers were vastly outnumbered in landmass and manpower compared to the
Allies but the war was still at a stalemate. Germany, tried all throughout the war to gain any edge
they could through the use of covert operations all around the world. Some notable examples
include supporting Hindu nationalists in the then British colony of India, and the Bolsheviks in their
communist revolution, who overthrew the

The Roles Played by Different Countries during World War II
The participants of World War 2 were those nations who either fought the battle or were affected by
the war. Below is a pictorial indication of the roles different countries played in the World War II.
The World War II was fought between two major military alliances namely the axis powers and the
allies. The Axis power was a group of countries led by Nazi Germany, kingdom of Italy and empire
of Japan. The allies led by united kingdom were joined later on Soviet Union and United states of
America. The allies were represented by republic of China in pacific. Let us have a closer look at
these two millitary alliances. The Axis Power: Axis nations or axis countries were the one that
fought agains the allied nations in the second World War. These countries were bound by a common
mission of protest agains the western world and Soviet Union. Their vision was to break the
hegemony of plutocratic – capitalist western powers and save the world from communism. Axis
nations was born out of Anti–comintern pact, an anti–communist treaty signed by Germany and
Japan and later joined by Italy. The tripartite pact played a very major role in strenghtening this
alliance between Germany rome and Japan. Germany – Hitler in 1941 described World War II as a
result of intervention of western powers against Germany during its war with Poland. Germany was
facing problems like over population and was unable to feed its citizens only through its

Juárez was born in the village of San Pablo Guelatao, Oaxaca on March 21, 1807, located in the
mountain range now known as the "Sierra Juárez". His parents, Marcelino Juárez and Brígida
García, were peasants who both died when he was three years old. Shortly after, his grandparents
died as well, in which his uncle then raised him.[2][3] He described his parents as "indios de la raza
primitiva del país," that is, "Indians of the original race of the country."[3] He worked in the corn
fields and as a shepherd until the age of 12, when he walked to the city of Oaxaca to attend school.

with a joint seizure of the Veracruz customs house in December 1861. Spain and Britain soon
withdrew after realizing that the French Emperor Napoleon III used the episode as a pretext to
launch the French intervention in Mexico in 1862, with plans to establish a conservative regime. The
Mexicans won an initial victory over the French at Puebla in 1862, celebrated annually as Cinco de

retreat to the north, first to San Luis Potosí, then to the arid northern city of El Paso del Norte,
present day Ciudad Juárez, Chihuahua, and finally to the capital of the state, Chihuahua City, where
he set up his cabinet and government–in–exile. There he would remain for the next two and one–
half years. Meanwhile Maximilian von Habsburg, a younger brother of the Emperor of Austria, was
proclaimed Emperor Maximilian I of Mexico on April 10, 1864 with the backing of Napoleon III
and a group of Mexican conservatives. Before Juárez fled, Congress granted him an

The French Intervention Of Mexico
The years of the mid–1800's represent a dark era for Mexico and its people. Shortly after concluding
a political revolution, Mexico started to face problems not only in their internal structure but also
with exterior relationships. Even though the Mexican effort to defend its patrimony from a powerful
military won an important battle, the Mexican government was easily overthrown, establishing a
new period in Mexican history. The French intervention in Mexico derived from the struggles of
own Mexican conflicts causing the return of European ruling in North America.

government during the Reform War. The Reform War started with the differences in ... Show more

The desperation from Mexican officials did not find a viable way to solve the situation. After
realizing that the lack of funds in the country were insufficient to pay the claims from the English,
French, and Spanish, President Juarez proclaimed to suspend, for the time period of two years, the
debt payment to any European nation. This move from the Mexican leader did not seem justified
along the eyes of the affected countries and even brought them together to proclaim what they
demanded. The European nations embarked towards Mexico in an attempt to get back their claims.
The liberal administration in Mexico sought to arrange a deal with the three European forces.
Although having success into convincing the English and Spanish, France was already set into other
plans. This marked the start of the French movement to take control of Mexican territory expanding
the French ruling to America. The French emperor Napoleon III speculated in turning Mexico into a
French client state. The debts of Mexico were leading into an era of disaster and chaos. The French,
even though being a super military power, struggled at the beginning to take under control the
Mexican territory. The three European forces arrived at the Mexican port of Veracruz with the plans
of negotiating their claims to be returned, but it came clear to Spain and Britain what the French
intentions always were. Napoleon III had plans of

Essay On Mexican Culture
"Culture is defined as a learned meaning system that consists of patterns of traditions, beliefs,
values, meanings, and symbols that are passed on from one generation to the next and are shared to
varying degrees by interacting members of a community, ("Understanding Intercultural
Communication," Chung, Ting–Toomey, 16). And because of this history and geography play an
important role in determining why we do, feel, and believe the things we do, and because of this, it
impacts the culture that is developed overtime. And when we look at Mexico and the culture it
holds, we see this to be true.

What Factors Contributed To The Civil War
INTERNATIONAL AFFAIRS
Strengthening U.S. Foreign Power and Influence
The Union defeat of the Confederacy resulted in a strengthened U.S. government, which led to the
defeat of the French in Mexico, the confederation of Canada in 1867, and the purchase of the
Alaskan territory.
After the fall of the Confederacy, U.S. leaders were able to deploy troops to the Texas–Mexico
border to help resist the French intervention in Mexico. This pressure, combined with Mexican
resentment, led to the French Emperor Napoleon II to abandon his quest for Mexico.
Meanwhile in the North, Canadian politicians feared a resurgence of the U.S., and some U.S.

government – whether it would be just a confederation of separate states or one nation with a
national government, and whether a nation that stated all men were created equal with a right to
liberty would continue to allow the practice of owning slaves.
The Civil War was the result of basic differences between the free and slave states. After Abraham
Lincoln was elected President in 1860, vowing to keep slavery out of the territories, seven states
from the South seceded from the Union and established their own nation. Lincoln and most of the
people from the North refused to recognize this new nation as being separate from the U.S.
The war was triggered at Fort Sumter near Charleston, South Carolina, when the Confederate Army
claimed this U.S. fort as their own on April 12, 1861. They forced the federal troops there to lower
the American flag and surrender. President Lincoln sent U.S. forces there to try to suppress the
Confederates. An additional four states seceded to join the Confederacy. By the end of 1861, several
battles had already been fought in Virginia, Missouri, North Carolina and South Carolina and nearly
one million men confronted one another along 1200 miles from Virginia to

Maximilian had agreed to be emperor but was in need for more troops for his protection. Liberals by
this time held on to power in northwestern Mexico and parts of the Pacific Coast. The Mexican

alienated his conservative allies by trying to adopt liberal policies in which he failed to win over the
liberals. By 1866, Napoleon III ordered withdrawal of French troops. Maximilian is captured and

period which lasted nine years which made peace and tolerance toward the conservatives. Juarez

The new liberal generation that emerged during the 1840s were for the most part ambitious
provincials whose ability for social mobility was made possible by growth of secondary education
during the Independence period. Young men of such social backgrounds had particular reasons to
challenge the established power. Their goal was to destroy those colonial institutions that could
potentially block their social mobility. Specifically, the Catholic church. This new generation of
politicians looked to form their own identity, and were receptive to European influences that had
very little appeal to the already established politicians. These new external forces helped to polarize
the political field. The root of the polarization was what to do with religion. Liberal attitudes toward
the Church were shaped not only be ideological considerations but also by Conservative exploitation
of clerical grievances. Relations between the federal government deteriorated during the presidential
term of Tomas Mosquera (1866–67). Tension became increasingly severe after 1870, mainly
because of clerical opposition to the educational program that was launched by the Salgar

The Mexican Revolution is one of the most significant historical events in Mexican history. Without
the revolution Mexico would not be the democratic country that it is today. "The Mexican
Revolution is often seen as a standard bearer through which other subsequent Latin American
revolutions are interpreted."(Darity) There were several significant events spanning several years

The Reform War was a civil war between the Mexican people, the conservatives vs. the liberals.
With the unhappy reaction of the liberals chaos broke out and Comonfort resigned and Benito Juarez
became president. "Comonfort died in an ambush in 1863"(Biography in context) With Juarez
President the Reform War ended. The liberals considered this a political victory over the
conservatives, having one of their own in office. "Juarez would free Mexico from the most flagrant
remnants of neocolonialism."(Scholes) After the Liberals defeated the conservatives, President
Juarez had more to worry about. Some European countries were very upset with Mexico and their
unpaid debt with them. They sent troops to Mexico but, they all withdrew themselves when they
saw that French dictator Napoleon was planning to overthrow Juarez's government. The overthrow
of the Juarez government started the French Intervention in Mexico in 1862. With the help of the
United states Juarez managed to gain back control, he became a hero in the eyes of most liberal
Mexican's for not backing down and running out the French.

World War 1 Summary
On January 19, 1917, a secret telegram from Germany's foreign secretary was intercepted by British
intelligence. The telegram contained information on Germany's plans to ally with Mexico and
although the plans never came into action, it backfired on the Germans, eventually leading their
demise. Because of this, World War 1 was won by the Allied forces, thus, helping the United States
develop as a new world power.
In the telegram Zimmerman sent, he begins by stating the German's intentions of unleashing
unrestricted submarine warfare on Britain. This would effectively cripple Britain and its allies as
they depended on imports and exports very heavily. After this, Zimmerman offered his proposal,

Mexico shared borders with the United States and also held resentment for the outcome of the
Mexican–American War. This made them the perfect candidate for Germany to ally with. If Mexico
went to war with the United States, it would force the U.S. to keep its military in the western
hemisphere, allowing Germany to continue with its plan of unrestricted submarine warfare. It would
be a win–win situation for Germany, because if Mexico won, they would be allied with Germany
and if they lost, it still would've bought enough time for Britain to surrender. The Zimmerman
telegram was Germany's the plan to keep the United States out of the war. It attempted to coax
Mexico into sidetracking America, offering them financial support and their lost territories in Texas,
New Mexico, and Arizona. The telegram was to be a vital element in Germany's success as
Germany had a decent chance of winning. Russia was occupied by a revolution in their country and
soon issued a declaration of peace; this removed them as a threat to Germany. Britain and France
were running low on money and Germany had previous success when blockading Europe. But, the
United States would add another powerful enemy for Germany to fight and they had plenty of
reasons to join the war. The United States loaned Britain and France about $3 billion dollars and
they would not be able to pay it back if they were defeated by Germany.

The Articles Of Confederation Was Successful On Foreign...
Midterm #2: On the short term scale the Articles of Confederation was successful regarding Foreign
policy and the Western Lands, but eventually the United States succumbed to economic collapse due
to economic restriction placed on the central government deriving from the Articles of confederation
lacking the ability to collect revenue. One area that the Articles of Confederation did well during the
war and shortly after the war was opening the U.S. to the world as a nation that hated Great Britain.
Through this hatred, the nation France came to the U.S. with the hope to help the Americans fight
the British. France was the most vital partner to the U.S. before and after any direct French conflict
in the Revolutionary War. The rebel Americans were sold weapons and given the funds to wage war
on a higher level because of the financial support from the French. Without this economic and
military intervention from France the American Revolution would have been stopped surely due to
ill equipped colonists. Also when the war ended the government made sure to keep a "permanent"
alliance with France. Since they were close to the French the newly founded United States of
America had France play a large role during the Treaty of Paris ending the war and making the U.S.

Transition of Mexican Identity
Identity is a peculiar thing. Identity as a person, place or even thing can be somewhat misconstrued
depending on the perspective at which the observation is taking place. The following piece has an
objective of helping formulate the identity of a nation in transition. A nation that has multiple creeds
and cultural diversity but still looking to find its purpose in the world in which it exists in.
Establishing the foundations for its existence through strong leadership, economic know how and

Born into poverty and orphaned at a young age, Juarez left his meager surroundings in search of a
new beginning. At the age of twelve, he left the Zapotec village and travelled by foot forty–one
miles to the state capital. Encouraged by his sister and a generous Franciscan layman, Juarez sought
education in the form of seminary school where he found this not to be his calling but headed into
the field of law.
Juarez passionate side was seen in his efforts to advocate for the poor and needy. His intention to
bring about a form of social equality was his main objective. Not notably successful in his legal
campaign to make the lives of the poor easier, the self–effacing attorney now realized that only
structural alteration of the system could affect the changes he envisioned, and his liberalism
strengthened. (330)
Juarez relationship with Santa Anna was strained from the beginning. Serving under Santa Anna
during the war with the states, Juarez contempt grew. After the war broke out, Juarez was recalled to
his home state to serve as provisional governor. The eventual defeat led to the exile of Santa Anna
who had sought refuge in Oaxaca where Juarez governed. Juarez refused his proposal and
established his leadership by attitude and example. His leadership may not have been revolutionary;
however it did lead to strong support in his ideals and accomplishments.

The Monroe Doctrine... a Positive
The U.S benefitted Latin America through the implementation of the Monroe Doctrine, which
helped prevented further European colonization. Independence and sovereignty were in the U.S's
intentions for involvement in Latin America, while many European governments saw benefits in
overturning independence and thereby acquiring resources and global power. This paper will use
examples of European colonialism in, Africa, Mexico, and the Dominican Republic, to support my
claim. Both the U.S and Europe had very different intentions for getting involved in Latin America
and this influenced their relations and the overall status of Latin America. In the end, the United
States helped prevent European re–colonization in Latin America through the ... Show more content

A third incentive of European colonialism was nationalism. Europe wanted to prove its superiority
by colonizing and being in control of as much land as possible. "During the period 1850 to 1871, the
nation–state achieved its mature status in Europe. Nationalism clearly became the principal basis for
the organization of western civilization. This fact had earlier been demonstrated in England and in
France during the course of their political revolutions. In this period, it became manifest throughout
Europe. Nationalism is a primary motivating element, which determined the course of events in
France during the regime of Napoleon III, Italy where unification was achieved, Germany, where
unification was achieved, Russia where important steps towards modernization were taken, and the
United States, which experienced the Civil War, a war to preserve the union." [7] Nationalism is the
equivalent of American Patriotism and in the same way creates a sense of unification. It appeals to
every member of a nation and regardless of race, gender, social class; it was the promise of
benefitting the entire nation. There were also several incentives for the U.S to get involved in Latin
America. The main focus for the U.S was to keep communism out of the Western Hemisphere.
There are several examples of U.S involvement in Latin America due to the threat of communism.

Woodrow Wilson's Fourteen Points
Woodrow Wilson's Fourteen Points provided a partial model of his diplomatic approach, since he
promised democracy and self–determination for Europe, particularly for countries under enemy
occupation during the First World War or for subject people in the Ottoman, German and Hapsburg
Empires. None of these survived the war, and the Poles, Czechs and other Europeans did gain
national homelands, although this was not the case for the non–white subject peoples of the British
and French Empires. Nor did it even hold true for the nations of Latin America and the Caribbean,
where Wilson intervened during World War I. Indeed, Haiti was occupied from 1915–34 and the
Dominican Republic from 1916–24, while Wilson intervened repeatedly in the Mexican Revolution.
Moreover, at the end of World War I, Britain and France divided up Germany's African colonies
between them, and also maintained control over the Arab parts of the former Ottoman Empire as
trusteeships. Although Wilson is generally considered idealistic and well–meaning, in the Fourteen
Points he ended up making many promises that the U.S. government had neither the power nor even
the desire to carry out, particularly in its treatment of Germany, Russia, Turkey and the colonial
peoples around the world. Nor were the other Great Powers ever likely to willingly give up their
own colonies and spheres of influence while the U.S. held onto its own. Nor were Wilson's hopes
for the League of Nations ever fulfilled for he died in 1924

Latin Americ The Independence, Nation Building, And The...
Latin America in the 1820's
The independence, nation building, and the economy were three major settings during Latin
America in the 1820's. During this time Latin America was faced with the chance of change.
Traditional Monarchical structure was merged into the Portuguese and Spanish colonial empires.
The way that theses territories responded to change was distinctive to the region.
Creole Cities in the eighteenth century were being affected by ideas from the new political ideals
and the Enlightenment. Free Trade, free press, and equality were hugely appealing to people living
in Latin America. Leaders of the independence movement were Simon Bolivar and Jose de San
Martin. These two men have understood the ideas of the Englishmen better than anyone. In Latin
America, nationalistic revolts started happening. "It would be easier to have two continents meet
than to reconcile the sports of Spain and America.", said Bolivar. Draining people from their wealth,
he promoted nativism throughout these countries. Napoleon made room for change for the Latin
American countries in the beginning of the eighteenth century. The way that he made room for
change was by having Confidential wars. The colonial empires of the Spanish and Portuguese were
highly weakened. Later on in 1810, Mexico went progressed through changes as well. The creole
elites overthrew the rule of peninsulas. Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla, a priest and a studier of the
French Revolution, in Mexico, came to the rescue.

How Did The Us Achieve Latin America's Goals
The United States had many ways to try and achieve it's goals in Latin America.
The United States Congress passed the Foraker Act, which established a civil government in Puerto
Rico. This act authorized the President of the U.S. to appoint a governor and part of the Puerto
Rican island legislature.
The U.S. established Cuban as a protectorate. The Treaty of Paris granted Cuba its independence,
but the U.S. Army didn't want to withdraw from the island until the year 1902. The Platt
Amendment restricted the rights of newly independent Cubans and effectively brought the island
with the U.S. sphere. This amendment prevented Cuba from signing a treaty with another nation
without American approval. It also allowed the U.S. the right to intervene to preserve order in Cuba.
Cuba eventually agreed with the Platt Amendment and added it to it's constitution. This treaty made
Cuba a protectorate of the U.S. and governed their relationship for many years.
Theodore Roosevelt developed a policy for the U.S. action in Latin America. It is called "big stick"
diplomacy because it depended on a strong military to help achieve America's goals. ... Show more

Juarez Essay
Juarez
The movie Juarez, starring Paul Muni, Bette Davis, Brian Aherne and Claude Rains, has the perfect
story line. There's action, love, violence and heartbreak, but most importantly, it brings attention to a
piece of history that is rarely recognized: monarchs in Mexico. Louis Napoleon III of France, played
by Claude Rains, saw the American Civil War as an opportunity to advance the French government.
Louis wanted to establish French influence in Mexico, which he knew was against the Monroe
Doctrine. He took advantage of the fact that America was in a weak state due to the war, and could
therefore not intervene as per the Monroe Doctrine. In the film, he discusses with his wife, Empress
Eugenie, about who should fulfill the duty ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Although Maximilian had many supporters, it was not enough to fight against the Mexican
Republicans and Benito Juarez. On several occasions in the movie, Maximilian was asked to step
down from his position as emperor and allow Mexico to go back to its former democracy. Juarez
sent messengers as well as letters, and the final letter he sent mentioned a threat of Maximilian's
blood spilling if he did not oblige. Maximilian would not step down and insisted he was doing what
he was sent there to do. As the Civil War in the United States ended, the United States was finally
able to help Mexico fight against the French. This led to a weakening of the French presence in
Mexico and eventually Napoleon decided to pull out his troops. Napoleon was very persistent in his
efforts of getting Maximilian to leave Mexico, and almost succeeded, but not before Carlotta could
go back to France and beg him to change his mind, and instead support the monarchy. Napoleon
would not budge on his decision and Maximilian gave in and wrote his letter of abdication. When
Maximilian read his letter to his soldiers, they were extremely upset and General Mejia, who was an

him that if he left, it was surely a death sentence for all of them. Maximilian could not allow the

The Intruders Ramon Gutierrez, the author of book When Jesus Came, the Corn Mothers Went
Away reveals through research and evidence what occurred in New Mexico during 1500–1846. The
Spaniards had difficulty submitting the Pueblo Indians, living in New Mexico however it was not an
easy task. In addition, the Pueblo Indians are faced with another intruder the Franciscans who claim
will save the natives' souls. This book shows the native perspective and their social lives before and
after the Spaniards intrusion into New Mexico. These intruders, the Spaniards and Franciscans,
forcibly alter the natives' culture, marriage, and sexuality, claiming to civilize these savages. These
events are easily comprehensible due to the structure of the book. Ramon Gutierrez' book
categorizes the information into three parts making it simpler for people to understand what
transpired. The three categories are as follows: the sixteenth century, the seventeenth century, and
the eighteenth century. The first category presents the Indians way of culture before the Spanish
influence. The book goes into the mindset of the natives, letting the reader see the Indians in a
different angle than what other presents them. Usually, the Indians are portrayed as unintelligent,
uncivilized Indians without a structured society in biased books, however this book gives a more
unbiased view. The beginning several pages of the first section reveals how their religion came

Napoleon III: The Pragmatic Emperor
The final defeat of Napoleon Bonaparte at Waterloo and the collapse of the French Empire left a
bittersweet mood in France. Many, tired of the long war and declining morale, welcomed a fresh

dissection of French territory. In exile, the Bonapartes waited for a chance and a member of the
family who could restore honor to their name. Louis Napoleon met the description. Staging multiple

won him both praise from the Catholics at home and scorn from Republicans who supported the
fiery Italian (O'Sullivan). To resolve the conflict, Napoleon took the practical approach and did not
retract his support for the Pope, but rather asked Pius to institute liberal reform and the Napoleonic

influence the Church had in France, especially in education. Already meeting resistance in the
National Assembly due to the low representation of moderates there, Napoleon forced the issue of
the four–year term and organized a coup to continue serving the people. On December 2, 1851,
Napoleon claimed dictatorial powers and cited his popularity as he dissolved the assembly and

Napoleon moved his attentions back to international affairs and began to flex the French arm in

the "balance of power," Napoleon labored to restore prestige to France while avoiding unnecessary

The nationalization of oil companies under the presidency of Lazaro Cárdenas is perhaps one of the

can see the common theme in these episodes: the explosion of national revolutionary sentiments
causing important upheavals in the structures of society. The promises these movements made were

Space constraints prevent me from going into more statistics on trade balances, but from a glimpse
of the data it is evident that Mexico might have achieved formal independence in 1821, but a
hundred years later it was nowhere near securing effective independence. The Revolution of 1910
was in large part a response to this situation. This social movement has been remembered as a
reaction to the dichotonomies and marginalisations inherent in a society organized by an entrenched
racism and parochialism. It has been painted as a fight for social justice and equality, but it must be
remembered that many of the causes advanced for the situation was the elite's deference to foreign
interests.
The period if upheavals that began in 1910 had many causes and many leaders, but it was also in
large part a reaction to the United States' growing domination of the American continent. In this
respect and across the radical wings of the revolution, it was largely a movement against what a
segment of the Mexican population saw as U.S. imperialism, even if not articulated in strictily
ideological terms. To guard against these threats, philosopher and revolutionary of the time Jose

Cinco de Mayo: Victory of the Mexican Army over France
Cinco de Mayo– or the 5th of May– celebrates the 1862 victory made by the Mexican Army over
France at the Battle of Puebla in Mexico during the Franco–Mexican War. The war took place from
1861–1867, and though the victory did not stand for the end of the war, or the final victory it
showed the perseverance of the Mexican army. France's army was known to have more equipment,
better officers, and more well–trained soldiers than the Mexican army. The Mexican army had an
immense amount of debt to European countries that they could not pay off themselves anytime soon.
In response Britain, Spain, and France sent naval forces to Veracruz to collect their money that was
owed to them. Though when France sent a massive amount of troops into Mexico it swept through
the country quickly, but when the army arrived at Puebla, the Mexican army became triumphant
with a surprising victory. Though the pride of the small army did not last long, as the France invaded
Mexico City and took victory there. Although the remembrance of an unlikely victory is still
recognized every fifth of May to remind everyone that size does not always matter, and sometimes
luck will come to you in times of need. Cinco de Mayo is surprisingly not celebrated as often in

Essay about Mexicos Economy An Politics In 19th Century
Civil war had destroyed both social stability and the economy. Also, few people had enough
political experience to bind Mexico together. The first constitution, spread in 1824, giving state
legislators the power to elect both the president and the vice president. A result of this constitution,
caused a series of weak presidents struggled to form an effective government.
During this time, Mexico's political elite began to divide into two opposing factions: conservatives
and liberals. The conservatives favored a highly centralized government and wanted to maintain the
Catholic Church's power and control of educational facilities.
The liberals wanted a federation of states that was not strictly controlled by a central government.

troops occupied much of northern Mexico by the end of the year. Mexico City fell on September 14,
1847, and Mexican forces surrendered soon thereafter. The Río Grande was fixed as the southern
boundary of Texas. Territory, which now forms the states of California, Nevada, Utah, Arizona,
Colorado, New Mexico, and Wyoming, became part of the United States.
Liberal rebel leader Juan Álvarez became the provisional president of Mexico. The 1855 takeover of
the government by the liberals began a period known as La Reforma, in which liberal leaders sought
to reduce the power of the church and the military in Mexican politics and society. Later that year
Ignacio Comonfort, a liberal who sought a more gradual pace of reform, replaced President Álvarez.
In 1857 the liberals enacted a new constitution, which reestablished a federal form of government. It
provided for individual rights, universal male suffrage, freedom of speech, and other civil liberties.
The constitution also abolished special courts for members of the military or clergy, and ordered the
church and other institutions to auction off any land or buildings not absolutely necessary for their
operation.
Conservative groups bitterly opposed the new constitution. In 1858 a political revolt overthrew
President Comonfort and Juárez became provisional president. Soon afterward conservatives who
had participated in the revolt forced Juárez to flee Mexico City; he established a new seat of

Cinco de Mayo means the fifth of May. It is not an independence day for Mexico like most

Mexico declared independence from Spain on the 24th of August 1821. Cinco de Mayo is not an

It is also said that Napoleon wanted to check the powers of the United States before it got too

Napoleon also brought in a new Hapsburg prince who he thought would help him rule the Mexican
Empire. His name was Maximilian and his wife's name was Carolota. Napoleon's army hadn't been
defeated in over 50 years.
The French army invaded Mexico with the finest and most modern day armory and ammunition.
They also had a newly constituted foreign legion. The French, at the time feared no one.
The French then left the port of Vera Cruz to attack Mexico City from the west. The French thought
that the Mexicans would give up should their capitol fall to the enemy as the European countries
traditionally did. Under the command of Texas born General Zaragosa, and under Calvary command
of Colonel Porfirio Diaz, later to be Mexico's president and dictator, they awaited the French.
The French wore bright and stylish colors, opposed to the Mexicans. General Zaragosa ordered
colonel Diaz to take his Calvary, the best in the world at that time, out to the French flanks. The
French in response sent their Calvary to chase them. As a consequence to the French they were
butchered, and the remaining infantrymen tried one last time to charge the Mexicans in unfavorable
terrain and stampeding cattle and lost. The Mexican's were victorious and Diaz's superb horsemen

Why Did The Zimmermann Telegram Contribute To World War 1
Section 2– Investigation: Many historians are skeptical of the importance of the Zimmermann
Telegram in instigating America's entrance into World War I. Despite the insistence of neutrality by
the United States, it was inevitable that America would have to intervene in World War I as either a
peace negotiator or as an ally to the French and the British. While many Americans remained
committed to isolationism–President Woodrow Wilson won reelection using the slogan, "He kept us
out of war"–the Zimmerman cipher now served as fresh evidence of German aggression. (Andrews)
Many, such as Teddy Roosevelt, were furious at Wilson's passivity and on April 6, 1917, Wilson
signed a declaration of war against Germany. The many events leading to the declaration of war
makes it difficult to determine whether the Zimmerman Telegram was a catalyst for American
involvement, or simply an aggravating factor leading the United States joining World War I.
In January of 1917, British cryptographers deciphered a telegram from German Foreign Minister
Arthur Zimmermann to the German Minister to Mexico, von Eckhardt, offering United States
territory to Mexico in return for joining the German cause. (Alexander, Mary and Marilyn
Childress) The shocking parts of the telegram involved Mexico and Japan. Germany was effectively
proposing an alliance to tear the United States apart in the event of American belligerence. The
telegram was therefore an act of war. London was betting that Germany's use of

World War I Was The War That Shaped The Future Of The 20th...
World War I was the war that shaped the future of the 20th century and is what helped make the
United States becom e a Super power. Since its Independence the United States had taken a stance
of isolationism from conflicts in Europe and Asia. To further assert their stance on isolationism the
United States passed the Monroe Doctrine in 1823 which stated that any attempt by a European
nation to colonize or interfere with North and South American would be seen as an act of
aggression. The United States isolationist stance would allow them to expand their borders and
industrialize there country as well as their military. The ended of the 19th century showed the quick
industrialization of the United States both economically and militarily. With revolution stirring up in
Cuba Theodore Roosevelt built up our navy and was key in the Victory over Spain. With a booming
economy and a strong army and navy the U.S. was beginning to make its mark as a world power.
However even after the Spanish American War 1898 the United States still remained isolationist but
did trade with European nations as well as Latin America. During the 20th century the United States
would finally make it self–known as a world power to the western hemisphere. Europe as a

Review of "The Union, the Confederacy, and the Atlantic...
The American Civil War seen by many as one the most catastrophic loss of life to have taken place
in the Western Hemisphere except for the Revolutionary Wars. Accordingly, the Civil War placed
some of the European countries at odds on how to intercede; for fear that their support of the south
could be seen as a support of slavery, and thus the prospect of war with the union. Mays' book
covers different opinions from different writers such as Howard Jones, R.J.M. Blackett, Thomas
Schoonover, and James McPherson, who offered some critical analysis, with cause and effect why
Britain and France did not intervene. May presented some outstanding deliberation on the impact of
a single product on Europe. He stresses the ineptness of the ... Show more content on

Undeniably, the British had a long standing fear that Lincoln might use the Emancipation of the
slaves and start a revolt which could grow into a race war, and thus threatened the British Empire.
Indeed, it is no wonder that some back benchers in parliament cheered as a Tory MP stated, "The
great republican bubble had burst." (p.137). The Union minister in London Charles Adams became
so alarmed at the prospect that he wrote in 1862, "The great body of the aristocracy and commercial
class are anxious to see the U.S. go to pieces. (p.137) Without a doubt, the thought of losing
Victorias' empire was certainly present in the minds of Russell and Gladstone, who felt the need to
intervene on humanitarian and economic grounds. Both men and the British press chastised Lincoln
for his eagerness to free the slaves in only the Confederacy without computation the consequences.
Arguably, for this reason Russell and Gladstone sought to enlist the aid of Napoleon III to act in
concert in recognition of the south, to compel both sides to stop the war. Jones heartily suggests that
Russell, although a capable diplomat, failed to understand the complexities and possible fallout of
British recognition of the south. He stresses that recognition would have changed the country as a
whole, and would see British support of slavery as a contradiction

Why The Us Entered World War 1

  • 1. Why the Us Entered World War 1 {text:bookmark–start} Why the United States Entered World War I {text:bookmark–end} The US entered the war for a variety of reasons. Here are some summaries of explanations. There were unauthorized German submarines along the US East coast. Germany's resumption of unrestricted submarine warfare in the spring of 1917 provided the final straw for US politicians, and America declared war. The first and foremost answer would be the sinking of the Lusitania, an British cruise/transport ship, bound for Britain from New York. The German U–boat ring sought to sink all supply ships headed for Britain in order to starve the island. It sank the Lusitania as part of its efforts. 1195 people died, including 128 Americans. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The telegraph was intercepted by British Intelligence and transmitted to the American government by the Brits. This infuriated Americans. It was the same sort of alliance that plunged Europe into war. Other WikiAnswers Contributors agree: The clincher was "discovery" of the Zimmerman Telegram (it was de–coded by the British and forwarded to US diplomats; with obvious self–interest on the part of the Brits). {text:bookmark–start} Answer {text:bookmark–end} Entry of the United States America's policy of insisting on neutral rights while also trying to broker a peace resulted in tensions with both Berlin and London. US president Woodrow Wilson repeatedly warned that he would not tolerate unrestricted submarine warfare, and the Germans repeatedly promised to stop. In January 1917 the German military decided that unrestricted submarine warfare was the best gamble to choke British supplies before the American troops could arrive in large numbers. A proposal to Mexico to join the war was exposed in February, bringing war closer. (See Zimmerman telegram). After further U–boat attacks on American merchant ships, Wilson requested that Congress declare war on Germany, which it did on April 6, 1917 (see: Woodrow Wilson declares war on Germany on Wikisource). The House approved the war resolution 373–50, the Senate 82–6, with opposition coming mostly from German ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 3. America 's Changing Foreign Policy The Monroe Doctrine was an assertion of President James Monroe regarding U.S. foreign policy in 1823. In the Doctrine, the President denounced European powers' any further attempt to colonize and exploit Latin American countries, while promising not to interfere any existing European colonies in the Americas. The Monroe Doctrine was one of the greatest turning points in American foreign policy as it marked the beginning of America's rapid development as a world power. Over the past two hundred years of history, the meaning of the Monroe Doctrine had been altered multiple times in order to suit America's changing foreign policy. For example, in the 1840s, President James Polk used the Monroe Doctrine as an excuse to annex ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In addition, after the defeat of Napoleon in September 1815, three European nations – Austrian Empire, Prussia, and Russia – formed the Holy Alliance, also known as the Grand Alliance, to endorse and strengthen monarchism. The rapid growth of monarchy in Europe in the 1810s greatly threatened the United States and its democratic political structure. Amid such a crisis, the United States, under the leadership of President Monroe, issued the Monroe Doctrine in 1823 without hesitance. This action suggested the braveness of the young United States as a nation in defending democracy and fighting the growing imperialism of powerful European countries. In addition to the threat of the reviving European monarchism, the isolationism endorsed by President Washington was also a driving force of the Monroe Doctrine. In 1796, in President Washington's Farewell Address, he warned the United States of the danger to ally with foreign countries. The Monroe Doctrine implemented ideas mentioned in the Farewell Address by drawing an invisible line between the Americas and the Eastern hemisphere, freeing the U.S. from any possible political alliance with foreign countries. In the political cartoon "Uncle Sam – That's A Live Wire" by W. A. Rogers, the man on the right, who represented the United States, drew a line on the ground and separated himself from ... • 5. Cinco de Mayo, also known as the Anniversary of the Battle... Cinco de Mayo, also known as the Anniversary of the Battle of Puebla, is a national holiday in Mexico that commemorates the 1862 Mexican victory over the French forces of Napoleon III in Puebla, Mexico. This holiday, celebrated on the fifth of May, has deep roots in Mexican culture, but in American–Mexican culture as well. Cinco de Mayo serves as a proud reminder of an unlikely victory, as well as a day to express and cherish Mexican pride and heritage. After suffering from numerous wars, including the Mexican–American war and the Mexican civil war of 1858, the 19th century country of Mexico was nearly reduced to bankruptcy and impoverishment. This left the country unable to pay back the many foreign debts that had accumulated over ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... To pay homage to this vital day, the city of Puebla hosts a re–enactment of the battle, a massive civic parade, and various festivities that include dancing and singing. The Reconstrucción de la batalla allows volunteers and spectators alike to get a brief glimpse of the fighting that occurred on that historic day, without of course the great amounts of sacrifice and bloodshed. The reenactment consists of blank firing weapons, uniforms, and militaristic strategies that all stay true to the era. Puebla also organizes an annual civic parade, which now includes over 20,000 participants. School children, military, and floats are all included in this parade and are accompanied by mariachi bands, folkloric dancers, and colorful decorations. While Cinco de Mayo is an important holiday for those living in Puebla, it is also a major event for the millions of Mexican–Americans living in the United States. Although practically every part of the United States celebrates Cinco de Mayo in some form or the other, the Southwestern regions of America are home to the largest celebrations of Cinco de Mayo. In cities such as Los Angeles, San Jose, San Francisco, and San Antonio, a large proportion of the population has Mexican origins. Many people hang up banners advocating these special holiday, and school districts organize lessons and special events to educate their pupils about the culture of Americans of Mexican ... • 7. Essay Woodrow Wilson's Peace Agreement from WWI In 1917, the United States entered World War I on the side of the Allies. Previously angered by such events as the sinking of "Lusitania", American President Woodrow Wilson led the nation to war after learning of the Zimmermann Telegram and Germany's resumption of UNRESTRICTED SUBMARINE WARFARE! As the war came to a close with an Allies victory, President Woodrow Wilson devised a core list of points which stressed self–determination of people, free trade, and open diplomacy. Wilson believed that it could serve as the basis for a peace agreement between the fighting European nations and the United States. Going before a session of Congress on January 8, 1918, Wilson outlined American intentions and presented his ideas as the ... However, this point was useful in that it encouraged Germany to surrender as this among other points was very promising and seductive. Germany had been blockaded by Great Britain and virtually starved of trade since 1914. In his third point, Wilson called for the removal of economic barriers between countries in the League of Nations. It means the destruction of all special commercial agreements, each putting the trade of every other nation in the League on the same basis to equalize trade between nations. This point naturally contemplates fair understanding as to the distribution of raw materials among nations. In WW1, America was the most powerful export economy in the world. In any trading situation of the time, especially after the hit European economies took during the war, America would ultimately dominate. This excessive trade domination of the time bolstered America's economy and set the stage for the "Roaring Twenties". Wilson's fourth point called for nations to reduce their armies to the bare minimum. Militarism, after all, was one of the driving forces that caused the war in the first place. Aggressive nations such as Germany raced to build their armies to be large enough to be imperialists and world police, leading to conflict among world powers, and eventually war. This idea was not obtained because nations such as Britain and France had empires to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 9. American Involvement in Ww1 World War I (WWI), which was predominantly called the World War or the Great War from its occurrence until 1939, and the First World War or World War I thereafter, was a major war centered in Europe that began on 28 July 1914 and lasted until 11 November 1918. On 22 April 1915 at the Second Battle of Ypres, the Germans (violating the Hague Convention) used chlorine gas for the first time on the Western Front. Algerian troops retreated when gassed and a six–kilometer (four–mile) hole opened in the Allied lines that the Germans quickly exploited, taking Kitchener's' Wood. • 11. The War I Was The United States Become A Super Power World War I was the war that shaped the future of the 20th century and is what helped make the United States become a super power. Since its Independence the United States had taken a stance of isolationism from conflicts in Europe and Asia. To further assert their stance on isolationism the United States passed the Monroe Doctrine in 1823 which stated that any attempt by a European nation to colonize or interfere with North and South American would be seen as an act of aggression. The United States isolationist stance would allow them to expand their borders and industrialize their country as well as their military. Neutrality and isolationism were essential after achieving our independence. George Washington issued his Proclamation of Neutrality in May 1793. George Washington proclamation stemmed from the fact that our country was to young and military to week, to get involved in any sort of engagement. The ended of the 19th century showed the quick industrialization of the United States both economically and militarily. With revolution stirring up in Cuba Theodore Roosevelt built up our navy and was key in the victory over Spain. With a booming economy and a strong army and navy the U.S. was beginning to make its mark as a world power. However, even after the Spanish American War 1898 the United States still remained isolationist but did trade with European nations as well as Latin America. • 13. The Attack On Pearl Harbor Essay It is well documented in United States history books that during the First World War, the United States had an isolationist and neutral stance towards the war in Europe. However, according to these texts, this all changed on February 24, 1917 when the United States received a decoded German telegram message from Britain. This message read that Germany requested Mexico to join their side and declare war on the United States if their northern neighbor joined the war against Germany. It is said that this was the most important event that pushed the neutral United States over the edge to join the Allied Powers. It is even compared in importance to the attack on Pearl Harbor which pushed the United States in joining the Allies in the Second World War! However, this is simply not the case. There were a multitude of more import reasons which, when looking at the complete picture, show that the Zimmerman Telegram had much less of an impact than previously thought. It all started in early 1917, the First World War was in full swing and there appeared to be no end in sight. The Central Powers were vastly outnumbered in landmass and manpower compared to the Allies but the war was still at a stalemate. Germany, tried all throughout the war to gain any edge they could through the use of covert operations all around the world. After the fall of the Confederacy, U.S. leaders were able to deploy troops to the Texas–Mexico border to help resist the French intervention in Mexico. • 50. How Did The Us Achieve Latin America's Goals The United States had many ways to try and achieve it's goals in Latin America. The United States Congress passed the Foraker Act, which established a civil government in Puerto Rico. This act authorized the President of the U.S. to appoint a governor and part of the Puerto Rican island legislature. The U.S. established Cuban as a protectorate. The Treaty of Paris granted Cuba its independence, but the U.S. Army didn't want to withdraw from the island until the year 1902. The Platt Amendment restricted the rights of newly independent Cubans and effectively brought the island with the U.S. sphere. This amendment prevented Cuba from signing a treaty with another nation without American approval. It also allowed the U.S. the right to intervene to preserve order in Cuba. Cuba eventually agreed with the Platt Amendment and added it to it's constitution. This treaty made Cuba a protectorate of the U.S. and governed their relationship for many years. Theodore Roosevelt developed a policy for the U.S. action in Latin America. It is called "big stick" diplomacy because it depended on a strong military to help achieve America's goals. ... There's action, love, violence and heartbreak, but most importantly, it brings attention to a piece of history that is rarely recognized: monarchs in Mexico. Louis Napoleon III of France, played by Claude Rains, saw the American Civil War as an opportunity to advance the French government. Louis wanted to establish French influence in Mexico, which he knew was against the Monroe Doctrine. He took advantage of the fact that America was in a weak state due to the war, and could therefore not intervene as per the Monroe Doctrine. Although Maximilian had many supporters, it was not enough to fight against the Mexican Republicans and Benito Juarez. On several occasions in the movie, Maximilian was asked to step down from his position as emperor and allow Mexico to go back to its former democracy. Juarez sent messengers as well as letters, and the final letter he sent mentioned a threat of Maximilian's blood spilling if he did not oblige. Maximilian would not step down and insisted he was doing what he was sent there to do. As the Civil War in the United States ended, the United States was finally able to help Mexico fight against the French. This led to a weakening of the French presence in Mexico and eventually Napoleon decided to pull out his troops. Napoleon was very persistent in his efforts of getting Maximilian to leave Mexico, and almost succeeded, but not before Carlotta could go back to France and beg him to change his mind, and instead support the monarchy. Napoleon would not budge on his decision and Maximilian gave in and wrote his letter of abdication. When Maximilian read his letter to his soldiers, they were extremely upset and General Mejia, who was an Indian and never showed emotion, cried. Colonel Lopez protested Maximilian's abdication and told him that if he left, it was surely a death sentence for all of them. The Intruders Ramon Gutierrez, the author of book When Jesus Came, the Corn Mothers Went Away reveals through research and evidence what occurred in New Mexico during 1500–1846. The Spaniards had difficulty submitting the Pueblo Indians, living in New Mexico however it was not an easy task. In addition, the Pueblo Indians are faced with another intruder the Franciscans who claim will save the natives' souls. This book shows the native perspective and their social lives before and after the Spaniards intrusion into New Mexico. These intruders, the Spaniards and Franciscans, forcibly alter the natives' culture, marriage, and sexuality, claiming to civilize these savages. These events are easily comprehensible due to the structure of the book. Ramon Gutierrez' book categorizes the information into three parts making it simpler for people to understand what transpired. The three categories are as follows: the sixteenth century, the seventeenth century, and the eighteenth century. The first category presents the Indians way of culture before the Spanish influence. The book goes into the mindset of the natives, letting the reader see the Indians in a different angle than what other presents them. Many, tired of the long war and declining morale, welcomed a fresh start. Others, however, missed the sweet taste of empire and detested defeat and the foreign dissection of French territory. In exile, the Bonapartes waited for a chance and a member of the family who could restore honor to their name. Louis Napoleon met the description. Staging multiple failed coups, Napoleon rejected failure and instead took a more patient approach. Finally, in December of 1888, Napoleon swept into France from exile in England and won the Presidency in a landslide victory. Immediately, Napoleon set to work at home, working on the ... His dual goal to both, "spare the religious susceptibilities of French Catholics and to avoid offending the national susceptibilities of the Italian revolutionists," won him both praise from the Catholics at home and scorn from Republicans who supported the fiery Italian (O'Sullivan). To resolve the conflict, Napoleon took the practical approach and did not retract his support for the Pope, but rather asked Pius to institute liberal reform and the Napoleonic Code in the Papal states (O'Sullivan). He in return, approved the Loi Falloux that increased the influence the Church had in France, especially in education. Already meeting resistance in the National Assembly due to the low representation of moderates there, Napoleon forced the issue of the four–year term and organized a coup to continue serving the people. On December 2, 1851, Napoleon claimed dictatorial powers and cited his popularity as he dissolved the assembly and declared himself emperor of the Second French Empire (Osgood 59). With power now consolidated, Napoleon moved his attentions back to international affairs and began to flex the French arm in front of the world. Space constraints prevent me from going into more statistics on trade balances, but from a glimpse of the data it is evident that Mexico might have achieved formal independence in 1821, but a hundred years later it was nowhere near securing effective independence. The Revolution of 1910 was in large part a response to this situation. This social movement has been remembered as a reaction to the dichotonomies and marginalisations inherent in a society organized by an entrenched racism and parochialism. It has been painted as a fight for social justice and equality, but it must be remembered that many of the causes advanced for the situation was the elite's deference to foreign interests. The period if upheavals that began in 1910 had many causes and many leaders, but it was also in large part a reaction to the United States' growing domination of the American continent. In this respect and across the radical wings of the revolution, it was largely a movement against what a segment of the Mexican population saw as U.S. imperialism, even if not articulated in strictily ideological terms. Cinco de Mayo: Victory of the Mexican Army over France Cinco de Mayo– or the 5th of May– celebrates the 1862 victory made by the Mexican Army over France at the Battle of Puebla in Mexico during the Franco–Mexican War. The war took place from 1861–1867, and though the victory did not stand for the end of the war, or the final victory it showed the perseverance of the Mexican army. France's army was known to have more equipment, better officers, and more well–trained soldiers than the Mexican army. The Mexican army had an immense amount of debt to European countries that they could not pay off themselves anytime soon. In response Britain, Spain, and France sent naval forces to Veracruz to collect their money that was owed to them. Though when France sent a massive amount of troops into Mexico it swept through the country quickly, but when the army arrived at Puebla, the Mexican army became triumphant with a surprising victory. Though the pride of the small army did not last long, as the France invaded Mexico City and took victory there. Although the remembrance of an unlikely victory is still recognized every fifth of May to remind everyone that size does not always matter, and sometimes luck will come to you in times of need. Cinco de Mayo is surprisingly not celebrated as often in Mexico as it is in the United States. Later that year Ignacio Comonfort, a liberal who sought a more gradual pace of reform, replaced President Álvarez. In 1857 the liberals enacted a new constitution, which reestablished a federal form of government. It provided for individual rights, universal male suffrage, freedom of speech, and other civil liberties. The constitution also abolished special courts for members of the military or clergy, and ordered the church and other institutions to auction off any land or buildings not absolutely necessary for their operation. • 72. Why Did The Zimmermann Telegram Contribute To World War 1 Section 2– Investigation: Many historians are skeptical of the importance of the Zimmermann Telegram in instigating America's entrance into World War I. Despite the insistence of neutrality by the United States, it was inevitable that America would have to intervene in World War I as either a peace negotiator or as an ally to the French and the British. While many Americans remained committed to isolationism–President Woodrow Wilson won reelection using the slogan, "He kept us out of war"–the Zimmerman cipher now served as fresh evidence of German aggression. (Andrews) Many, such as Teddy Roosevelt, were furious at Wilson's passivity and on April 6, 1917, Wilson signed a declaration of war against Germany. The many events leading to the declaration of war makes it difficult to determine whether the Zimmerman Telegram was a catalyst for American involvement, or simply an aggravating factor leading the United States joining World War I. In January of 1917, British cryptographers deciphered a telegram from German Foreign Minister Arthur Zimmermann to the German Minister to Mexico, von Eckhardt, offering United States territory to Mexico in return for joining the German cause. (Alexander, Mary and Marilyn Childress) The shocking parts of the telegram involved Mexico and Japan. Germany was effectively proposing an alliance to tear the United States apart in the event of American belligerence. The telegram was therefore an act of war. World War I was the war that shaped the future of the 20th century and is what helped make the United States becom e a Super power. The United States isolationist stance would allow them to expand their borders and industrialize there country as well as their military. The Union minister in London Charles Adams became so alarmed at the prospect that he wrote in 1862, "The great body of the aristocracy and commercial class are anxious to see the U.S. go to pieces. Both men and the British press chastised Lincoln for his eagerness to free the slaves in only the Confederacy without computation the consequences. Arguably, for this reason Russell and Gladstone sought to enlist the aid of Napoleon III to act in concert in recognition of the south, to compel both sides to stop the war.
