Paper About Forgiveness
RE Assignment Anthony.Pulling
PART 1
The concept of forgiveness is a very important forgiveness, without it the world would be a very
very different place.Forgiveness is the action or process of being forgiven, or to be forgiven.
Forgiveness has been displayed in the article because Kaine Barnett carelessly drove his car into the
emergency stopping lane on the Hume Highway killing Sarah Frazer and Geoffry Clarke the tow
truck helping her.
The father of Sarah Frazer feels very sorry for Kaine he said in court " we don't want Kaine to be in
prison for the next 18 months to 3 years. Kaine could have been my son. Any of this could of
happened to any of our families. We don't hate him. We feel so sorry that he has to go through this.

The catholic sacrament of forgiveness is very important because no one is perfect ever since Adam
and Eve were tempted by the devil to eat the apple from the garden of Eden no human being was
perfect (Except for Mary). Imagine today's society without forgiveness and how many sins would be
left unforgiven.
Jesus Christ himself displayed a mind blowing level of forgiveness when he was being nailed to the
cross. "...33When they came to the place called The Skull, there they crucified Him and the
criminals, one on the right and the other on the left. 34But Jesus was saying, "Father, forgive them;
for they do not know what they are doing." And they cast lots, dividing up His garments among
themselves. 35And the people stood by, looking on. And even the rulers were sneering at Him,
saying, "He saved others; let Him save Himself if this is the Christ of God, His Chosen One."..."
Luke 23:24 (BibleHub.com)
In the article it is clearly stated that Kaine has remorse for his actions "One factor is Kaine's
remorse. It is harder to hate someone when they already hate themselves. Since causing the two
deaths, Kaine has suffered post–traumatic stress disorder with its associated depression, anxiety,
flashbacks, sleeplessness and suicidal thoughts. " (The Age

Christian Interpretation Of Forgiveness
Forgiveness is the deliberate and voluntary process by which the victim of the wrong–doing
undergoes a change of view, letting go of any negative emotions and ultimately granting the
offender a form of release (APA, 2006). The intertwining cultural events during the writings of the
Christian Bible and the Islamic Qur'an have undoubtedly influenced their interpretations of
forgiveness as many differences are present in how they are understood, ultimately affecting the
implications of these teachings for modern adherents. The Qur'an states that a person's forgiveness is
conditional on the person's ability to repent towards Allah which differs from Christianity's more
liberal approach focussing on the forgiveness between followers. This can be ... Show more content

The Lord's Prayer includes the lines: "And forgive us our trespasses; as we forgive those who
trespass against us" showing the predominant theological understanding that interpersonal and
divine forgiveness are inextricably linked (Catechism of Catholic Church, 2005). This message is
shown through the most well–known Christian prayer, emphasising that forgiveness from God is
directly associated with forgiveness in the lives of Christian followers. Furthermore John 8:7
highlights the importance of forgiveness in relation to one's own salvation when Jesus states "one of
you who is without sin be the first to throw a stone at her" (Bible Gateways, 2015). Such a statement
from the Son of God can be interpreted to be focussing on 'forgivers', voicing that no one has the
right to begrudge someone else as such an action would be hypocritical (Bible Gateways, 2015).
Matthew 18:21–22 also explains how Christians should forgive each other when Jesus tells Peter
that men should forgive each other "not seven times, but seventy–seven times" (Henrys, 2015).
Taking this message from an explicit view, it can be assumed that one must only forgive the offender
a limit of seventy–seven times however the implicit message being told by Jesus is that one must be
prepared to forgive numerous times as

Forgiveness And The Future
Forgiving is often a conscious decision to let go of the pain, anger and bitterness arising from hurtful
situations, then move on and live our lives the best we can despite the past. Forgiveness can take
time and it can be difficult, but it's essential for boosting happiness, mental and physical health.
Forgiveness is a funny thing; it warms the heart and cools the sting."– William Arthur Ward
Forgiveness does not change the past, but it does enlarge the future."– Paul Boese.
The more I know, the less I understand. All the things I thought I knew, I'm learning again. The more

The nature gives seasons. From morning to night, as from cradle to the grave, is but a succession of
changes so gentle and easy that we can scarcely mark their progress. The process of change and
challenge is always at work. For some change brings cheer, whereas for others it may mean
moments of chagrin. Both painful and pleasant, a shift from the established order to a new one is
inevitable. There is no monotony.
The breakup of joint family system in India is a case for study and a standing example of change
that has overtaken us so fast. The emergence of nuclear family is a telling tribute to the process of
change over which we have no control whatsoever. That the Indian society is at the crossroads is not
a matter of fiction, but a vigorous reality.
The glamour and glitter that we see around is the result of consistent and conscious efforts that have
gone into the making of 'changing patterns of society' everywhere under the sun. Change is not
made without inconvenience, even from worse to better." –Richard Hooker.

and even pressure to adjust to the new realities that time throws

The Bible And Forgiveness
What injuries to yourself from others would you find especially hard to get over or forgive? Explain.
The Bible says, "Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ
God forgave you" (Ephesians 4:32). I personally try to live by the Bible every day. Times do get
hard and certain circumstances hurt more than others, but we are all called to forgive one another at
the end of the day. Forgiveness and getting over a situation are, in my opinion, two separate acts.
Forgiveness should be given to all, but completely ignoring and disregarding the situation is not
appropriate. I have a hard time in trusting others; every person is broken and flawed, and although it
is not always meant to be intentionally hurtful, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This was the longest relationship I had ever been in, and he was my first love. I don't give out trust
to many people, and he was the first person who I felt as if I could trust my life with. He was able to
gain all my trust and he held me in the palm of his hand. I thought we would last for a long time and
that we would never give up on one another. Whenever I moved, we were both determined to keep
our relationship alive and well until he could come down to Georgia to live. He was soon to be
enlisted. I had always thought highly of him, even when he was at his lowest. I never thought bad
about him or felt as if there was any reason for me not to trust him. Right before he went off to boot
camp I found out he had been cheating on me the last six months of our relationship with many
different girls who claimed to be some of my "best friends." I was hurt more than ever, and it was
because I trusted that he would be faithful and that the girls would have enough sense to not be
involved in unfaithful acts with my boyfriend at the time. My trust for both him and my friends were
lost that day, and my heart ached of a pain that it had never felt before. I couldn't breathe, and I did
not know how I was going to go on with my life. No person knew what to say to make me feel
better. I blamed myself. I blamed myself for trusting someone who did not deserve my trust. I did
forgive him for the things he did to me, as I forgave the girls he did it

Being able to forgive and forget allows people to continue to move on with their lives instead of
dwelling on a situation. However, would one be able to forget about a situation more easily if they
have forgiven their transgressor first? Saima, Bierman, and MacLeod (2014) proposed a study to
address this question. They believe this is an important question to address because if forgiving
makes forgetting easier, it will allow people who are able to forgive to release offenses, empowering
them to preserve valued relationships and move on with their lives.
The independent variable presented in these studies is forgiveness and the dependent variable is the
ability to forget. The participants were between the ages of 18 and 39 and were made up ... Show

The results of this study were that unforgiven scenarios were observed as more serious (M=6.750,
SD= .32) than forgiven scenarios (M=4.03, SD= .85). It was also observed that participants were
more motivated to forgive the offender for scenarios that had been forgiven (M=2.92, SD=. 76) then
unforgiven (M=5.84, SD= .76) (Saima, Bierman, & MacLeod, 2014). The researchers were trying to

Forgiveness Jesus forgave many sinners throughout his ministry, but many people were upset at his
actions e.g. when Jesus healed a paralysed man. In Palestine it was the general belief that sickness
was caused by sin. When Jesus saw how much faith the man had he forgave all of his sins, and the
man was able to pick up his mat and walk home. Jesus believed that he could heal physically and
spiritually, but the Pharisees were extremely upset because they thought Jesus was blaspheming as
only God could forgive sins. No work was to be done on the Sabbath. When Jesus healed a crippled

He had kept to the house rules, by doing what his father wanted and therefore he expected a reward
for doing so. In the same way the Pharisees thought that by carrying out their specific practices and
keeping their rules, they were the only people who deserved heaven. As we all know, forgiving
people today causes great difficulties within our local society and on a worldly scale. On September
11 2001 there were major terrorist attacks in New York by the al–Qaeda group. The American
President, George W Bush, reacted to this by declaring a war against all terrorists. There was great
debate on how to react to such a horrific event and no one is certain whether war was the right
decision to make. Although the terrorist attacks were great atrocities, with many losing their lives
and others injured, personally I don't think that declaring a war was a very responsible action. Whilst
America was at war, hurt and bloodshed increased and although it helped with a few problems a lot
more were uncovered. Old Testament laws suggest that you should seek revenge for how you were
wronged – "an eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth". In the New Testament though, Jesus encourages
us to "turn the other cheek", suggesting that if we are sinned against, it is better to forgive

Forgiveness Is Often Misunderstood
Forgiveness is often misunderstood.
Forgiveness is a bunch of mixed behaviors and emotions that humans express in their life–time.
Many people are motivated to forgive because of their morals and how humans feel towards one
another. There are different ways of how people express forgiveness. A way people show
forgiveness is when they accept, and respect of the reality of what happened and to find a resolution.
People's actions are based on the feelings towards someone who caused harm to another. Some
people find forgiveness a hard thing to do because of how they cope with it. Experts from Stanford
University Forgiveness Project shows that forgiveness can give sense of relief such as reduce stress,

Nietzsche Forgiveness And Forgetfulness
Philosophical Anthropology (Seminar) – Term Paper (Draft)
Krishna S (0607197)
In this paper, I am going to elucidate on the significance of the concepts of forgiveness and
forgetfulness in Hannah Arendt and Friedrich Nietzsche's conceptualization of human action and
agency.
Remedial Action: Forgiveness and Promise
Hannah Arendt in her book, The Human Condition, delineates the three fundamental human
activities that set up the Vita Activa: Labour, Work and Action. Arendt constitutes them to be
fundamental because each of these "corresponds to one of the basic conditions under which life on
earth has been given to man". (Arendt, 1958:7). Arendt's conceptualizes labour as the Sisyphean
tasks of our life. It includes all the necessary and repetitive ... Show more content on

framework for the subject where the Unconscious is in a hyphen with the Other's discourse. In
melancholia, Freud postulates, that the 'love object' is kept alive by being held captive in the inner
world of the subject. The shadow of the object is incorporated, thus splitting the ego into the one

die], the other to maintain this position of the libido [which is bonded to the immortal internal
version of the object. (Freud, 1917). The subject here is not a foreclosed, substantive 'I'. It is in an

Theme Of Forgiveness In Purgatorio
The act of forgiveness may appear to be a simple task. Well, it is not. The play Purgatorio written by
Ariel Dorfman explores the concepts of revenge, repentance and forgiveness that progresses deeply
into the concept of love and betrayal. The play attempts to provide the answers to questions such as,
how can people move on with their lives without forgiveness? But how can you forgive someone
who does not want to be forgiven? Purgatorio is a glimpse of what can actually happen to people
whose sins of their past can still haunts them even after death.
Honestly, when the lights first opened and only revealed a plain white set with a chair, table, and a
bed, disappointing thoughts flooded my mine as I assumed that my money will be put into waste by
spending it to a play that consists of only two characters placed in a boring set. Initially, we know
nothing about the man and the woman. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Needless to say, this is the "judgement" area after one's death where a soul must achieve the state of
repentance before being accepted to heaven. It was clear why the walls were stained with white;
however, Dorfman interpreted purgatory as a familiar therapy or interrogation session situated in a
room that can be associated with an asylum or prison which is why the woman was in black while
the man was dressed like a doctor. The bareness of the room heightens the process of the purgation
of the souls and to literally portray purgatory as a lifeless place wherein the individuals can only
focus on the purification of their souls. The souls are trapped and can only go out if they abide with
the rules and procedures which are being monitored by a CCTV camera. A mind might wonder why
there is a camera in the purgatory. Every detail of the play has hidden and different meanings,

Examples Of Forgiveness And Reconciliation
The process involved in forgiveness and reconciliation can be very simple or very complex
depending on the situation. One time my friend took money from my wallet, I think it was a $20 bill
and I caught him in the act. We were both in the car and I parked at the mall and I left the car for
about five minutes and when I was walking back I saw in reach into my glove box and take money
out of my wallet. I was shocked and confronted him right away. He said he needed money to pay for
his brother back. Since he is a friend of mine I forgave him and just said he could just ask for money
and didn't have to steal from me. We are still friends and I still hang out with him on the regular but
I don't trust him anymore. Trust is defiantly something that ... Show more content on

The Amish are very religious and spiritual people who believe that forgiveness is more than a good
thing to do but forgiveness is the thing to do. In the Amish perspective the test of faith is action so
forgiving their children's killers with hours of death really shows what kind of people they are and is
very inspiring. The way the Amish people responded to the killings was such a shock. One of the
things I liked about that article was when they said that religion was not used to justify rage but to
inspire goodness, forgiveness, and grace. Even members of the community visited the gunman's
widow and parents. For the majority of us the process of forgiveness is a journey and may never
happen so just the fact they forgave so quickly was viewed as emotionally unhealthy to many.
Forgiveness has a meaning of not holding a grudge and the Amish were very clear that it does not
make the shooter free from punishment. If he were to live the Amish people would have wanted him
to be locked up but not for reasons of revenge but for the purpose of protecting other children. Most
people growing up learn about forgiveness and have experienced it one way or another. People need
to learn that forgiveness is an essential part of healing and is a process towards inner peace.
Learning that forgiveness is an internal process where you identify the hurt and analyze the situation
as well as your emotions helps you rebuild a sense of safety and letting go of a grudge. The whole
process of forgiveness does not usually involve the offender, most of the time not at all until
confronted. As where reconciliation is an internal process where you have a talk with the offender to
talk about various things such as what happened, each other's stories, viewpoints, reasoning's,
expressing the hurt, emotions, and so on. When reconciliation happens it moves beyond forgiveness

Definition Of Forgiveness
Can justice and forgiveness go hand in hand? Can a man with the lust for blood and revenge punish
and forgive his indicted villain? As much as we would love to think that it's possible to punish and
forgive, we would only be clouding our judgement when we know full well that we cannot have
both. To forgive means to stop feeling angry or resentful toward someone for an offense, flaw, or
mistake. Justice means the action of punishing or correcting something or someone that is not
behaving according to what is morally right and fair. In the definition of forgiveness, it states that
you are letting go of your anger, while the definition of justice says that it the action of using your
anger to punish someone. If you punish someone for a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
I, however, know that that statement is wrong; forgiveness can happen without justice and vice
versa. In The Forgiveness Project, there was a man named Eric Lomax, a British officer during
World War II, was captured by the Japanese and was sent to a prisoner–of–war camp where he was
tortured by a man named Takashi Nagase. When Eric got out of the camp that filled his days with
torment and suffering, there was a part of him that did not come back with him; his family noticed
the change in his heart and it almost scared them. As each day passed, Eric's heart grew darker,
hungry for the justice of his tormentor, Takashi. One day, his wife found him and heard the regret
and sadness in his heart; he wanted to apologize to Eric for all the wrong he had done to him. Eric
went to one of the old camps and saw Takashi. After all these years, his abuser was standing right in
front of him asking for forgiveness. Eric expected to be filled with rage and anger, but he ended up
forgiving Takashi for his deeds and they became good friends until death parted them. Eric did not
expect to forgive his tormentor, much like none of us except to forgive those who wronged us.
Our actions are driven by emotions but not all of them are same for everyone else. Forgiveness can
be driven by love, family, friendship, loneliness, and even empathy, revenge is only driven by anger.

Summary
Since 1985 there has been a tremendous increase in research regarding intrapersonal forgiveness,
but very little regarding self–forgiveness. The purpose of this article was to bring attention to the
topic of self–forgiveness within this growing body of research. The definitions of self–forgiveness
from many disciplines were reviewed along with what features of self–forgiveness differ from those
of intrapersonal forgiveness emphasizing the need for an increase in empirical research on the
subject matter.
There are many unanswered questions regarding self–forgiveness. It is questioned if the true self–

The simple act of defining self–forgiveness in a way that is applicable across disciplines provides
counselor and researchers a better starting point when approaching the topic of self–forgiveness.
One concept I found very interesting was the distinction between true self–forgiveness and pseudo
self–forgiveness. It is intuitive for me to believe that it is not possible for pseudo–self forgiveness to
have the same effect as true self–forgiveness, but with out research on the matter how can one be
sure. When I read that the test for self–forgiveness cannot differentiate between the two, it made me
wonder if it is difficult for a person or a counselor to know the difference. It also made me wonder if
it is possible that simply believing that things are better can actually make someone feel better.
I also found the question regarding the appropriateness of self–forgiveness to be interesting. When a
person believes something is their fault that is not, what approach should a counselor take? Is it
more appropriate to spend the time and effort on developing the skills to know what happened was
not the client's fault, or is it more appropriate to provide the skills that will allow the person to
forgive his or herself for what they believed they caused to happen? While this would have to be
considered on a case–by–case basis, as a counselor it would be helpful to have more research on the
topic that results in guidance on how to approach these types of

Allah (Subhana Wataala) has granted wisdom to humans. The wisdom calls for responsibility. The
more wisdom a person has, the more he/she is responsible.
When the wisdom is missing, the responsibility is also not there. Little children are not held
responsible, because their minds are not developed. The insane are not responsible, because they
have lost the thinking capacity and judgment. However, human beings are also not perfect,
sometime mistakes do occur and happens. Sometime we make mistakes without thought and

Forgiveness: Is It Is An Art?
Forgiveness is something that is not fully understood in todays culture. Forgiveness is an art. It is an
art because many people look at art and say " Oh thats just colors splattered together". Many people
look at forgiveness and say " Oh well im sorry thats all I can do". These are both incorrect outlooks.
Each picture an artist creates has a hidden meaning that you will only see if you really look beyond
the shapes that your brain see's. Forgiveness is more than just accepting the fact that someone
apologized. It is remembering the anguish and hurt that they caused you and willing to put it all in
the past and move forward with your life. Anyone can lie and say that their over it, but only those

Allow yourself to cry, scream, and anything else that overtakes you. You will most likely feel like
your world is over but the feeling is needed in order for the process to be complete. Realize that you
are angry and you have every right to be. You may even write your thoughts down to make yourself

Response To Forgiveness Essay
Response to Topic 1 The claims made by the objections have some good points made such that
resentment is problematic and it should naturally dissipate when forgiveness is in order. However,
through further analysis on the subject matter as well as comparison between the contemporary
philosophers and Confucian ideas, one can see the truth behind resentment and forgiveness.
According to Murphy, resentment refers to first personal response, which is a diminished feeling
when one's self–worth has been insulted. For example, when frauder took away one's hard–earned
money, one feels as if one was picked by the offender because one, among all the rest, is least
deserving of the money. This first personal response is of equal sense to the protection ... Show more

However, the act of forgiving others is inevitably the overcoming of resentment, to say forgiveness
is not a virtue, is to reject the notion of achieving the overcoming of resentment. Forgiveness is a
virtue, it is one step further than switching the aim of resentment, with the focus on self. One of the
Confucian idea is to wang (忘), which is a term describing what happens when your focus of
attention is lifted from certain attributes as if one has forgotten about it, but can still be able to recall
such incidence when asked. In the fraud example, forgiving is to wang the injury made by the
offender and have our limited attention on other more important things in life. This is not to say that
one has forgotten about the incidence, one can still describe the details of how the injury was made,
but that one is no longer affected emotionally by the offender. Forgiveness is a virtue since it is not
something that most people can accomplish and it encompasses a good moral as well as transcend–

Invictus Forgiveness
Forgiveness and reconciliation an aspect of the human psyche which plagues all with its enormous
burden. The process of forgiveness is a long and grim journey as presented in the 2009 drama
Invictus, telling the story of a war torn country and its progress towards a harmonious nation. A
group of people who have been oppressed in their own land for centuries are taught the power of
reconciliation and learn that there are far more important things in life than revenge and holding a

Forgiveness
Forgiveness is the act of seeking what is truly best for a person and to let go of our desire for
revenge. It is acknowledging our own pain and expressing our emotions in a non violent way.
People misunderstand the concept of forgiveness now a days.
The meaning of forgiveness is not to forget what the other person did to you. If you just forget what
the person did to you without acknowledging it, you are more liable to have that person disrespect
you again.
Forgiveness is not an open invitation for someone to hurt you again. People who are genuinely sorry
for what they did are not going to and must stop doing hurtful actions.
Lastly, forgiveness does not mean that justice ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In Luke 17:3–4 it says: So watch yourselves."If your brother or sister sins against you, rebuke them;
and if they repent, forgive them. Even if they sin against you seven times in a day and seven times

The devil likes to take advantage of moments like this and now has an open path to get to you from
your bitterness.
As Christians, we are trying to grow closer to God and not further away so forgive, take notes and
move on. Here are some steps that we can all start to take to becoming more forgiving people.
Pray and ask God to help you to forgive.
If you truly want to forgive someone and pray to God, he will guide you in the right path of
deliverance. 2. Try to see the situation from a different perspective.
Empathy and understanding is a big part of forgiving. Looking from a different point of view can
open your mind to understand why whoever did what they did to you or even realise that the
situation was a misunderstanding. 3. Know that you don't need to push through it.
Go at your own pace knowing that the end goal is to forgive. It's natural to feel hurt, disappointed
and even mad. Go at your own pace one step at a time.

The Tempest Forgiveness Essay
The journey to forgiveness is a difficult one, wrought with obstacles that claim even the most
virtuous. Most human beings have been subject to intense feelings of hatred for someone else –
family member, a lover, or a total stranger – over a disagreement. In the moment, we desperately
want to hurt the opposing party physically and emotionally, but after the fact we realize that the spat
was nothing in comparison with our love for them. We see an example of this in Shakespeare's The
Tempest, in the magician, Prospero. Prospero ascends the staircase of forgiveness and self–
discovery through the course of the novel. He discovers who he is as a person and figures out that
"the rarer action is [in] virtue than in vengeance," that the struggle ... Show more content on

Ariel is indebted to Prospero for when Prospero "made gape [the] pine and let [Ariel] out," freeing
him from the pine–tree prison that his former witch–master, Sycorax, put him in. Ariel plays the role
of Prospero's servant very willingly, telling him, "I come [to] answer thy best pleasure" (I.ii.189–
90). Even though he services Prospero with graciousness, the one thing Ariel desperately desires is
his freedom. Over the course of the novel, readers see Prospero and Ariel develop a friendship
outside of the usual master/servant relationship; they gain a sense of extreme trust in each other.
Prospero begins entrusting more personal tasks to Ariel, unlike Caliban who carries firewood and
does chores. Prospero asks Ariel to keep tabs on his brother and the royal party and "keep them
living" (II.i.296). With increasing satisfaction for the tasks Ariel does for him, Prospero praises him
more, saying, "Of my instruction hast thou nothing bated," and "Bravely... hast thou [performed],"
(III.iii.83–85). In the end, Ariel is the one who convinces Prospero to forgive his brother and his
accomplices, telling Prospero, "If you now beheld [the royal party], your affections [w]ould become
tender... [m]ine would, sir, were I human," (V.i.16–19). Prospero responds with "and mine shall,"
showing his complete faith in Ariel and his feelings about the situation. Prospero develops a fond
love for Ariel that helps in his journey to forgiveness and self–discovery. Along with Ariel's
increasing need for affirmation is his growing need for Prospero's love. He asks Prospero, "Do you
love me, master? No?" and Prospero replies "Dearly, my delicate Ariel," (IV.i.49–50). The
relationship between Prospero and Ariel has grown beyond a servant/master one and has drifted into
a friendship, almost familial. They trust one another's choices and feelings, making it easier for Ariel

Reaction Paper On Forgiveness
ChapterI
Introduction
Forgiveness
Generally, forgiveness is a decision to let go of resentment and thoughts of revenge. The act that
hurt or offended us always remain a part of our life, but forgiveness can lessen its grip on you and
help you focus on other, more positive parts of your life. Forgiveness can even lead to feelings of
understanding, empathy and compassion for the one who hurt us.
Forgiveness doesn't mean that we deny the other person's responsibility for hurting us, and it doesn't
minimize or justify the wrong. We can forgive the person without excusing the act. Forgiveness is a
process that involves a change in emotion and attitude regarding an offender. Most scholars view
this an intentional and voluntary process, driven by a deliberate decision to forgive. Theorists differ
in the extent to which they believe forgiveness also implies replacing the negative emotions with
positive attitudes including compassion and benevolence. In any event, forgiveness occurs with the
victim's full recognition that he or she deserved better treatment, one reason why Mahatma Gandhi
contended that "the weak can never forgive. Adapted from Philpot, C. (2006). Intergroup apologies

Forgiveness And Forgiveness : Forgiveness
Forgiveness is a topic that is relevant to every person who has ever lived. We all need forgiveness,
and we all need to give forgiveness. However, before we can tackle what forgiveness is, we need to
address some faulty thinking when it comes to forgiveness. There are several things that forgiveness
is not. It is not having a good feeling towards the person who wronged you. If you are waiting to
feel good towards the person who hurt you, you are going to wait a long time. Forgiveness is not
simply a feeling. Forgiveness is also not ignoring the offense or forgetting that it ever happened. You
cannot pretend something didn't happen. Forgiveness does not mean restoring full trust to that
person again or having the exact same relationship. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
God is perfect, and cannot forget anything, but forgetting is a passive human trait. Choosing not to
remember is active, and that is choosing not to hold sin against another by not bringing it up again,
or shaming another person with it, or using it against a person in any way. Forgiveness brings
consequences. The offense committed may mean that we cannot trust that person again, and that is
not wrong. It would be wrong, however, to refuse to ever trust that person by not accepting any
efforts to establish trust. There can also be other serious consequences of sin, and those
consequences do not make you unforgiving. "There is no promise in Scripture that God's
forgiveness will eradicate all the consequences of sin." Forgiveness means resisting thoughts of
revenge. Forgiveness means wishing the other person well and having sympathy for them. It means
praying for them. Forgiveness seeks reconciliation and always being willing to serve them (Exodus
23:4).
Choosing not to forgive can have serious consequences. Bitterness begins to rule the life of an
unforgiving person. He finds himself filled with anger and mistrust of other people. He only speaks
to those who sympathize with his hurt and do not challenge him. The hurt he has experienced
becomes the center of his life and his motivation for everything he does. The incident controls him.

The Pros And Cons Of Forgiveness
According to Mc CuUough, Pargament, & Thoresen, 2000, social scientists have adopted many
conceptualization of forgiveness, alternatively characterizing the construct as an emotion, a
decision, a behaviour, and a motivational change. According to Worthington (2001), Forgiveness is
defined as the emotional replacement of (1) hot emotions of anger or fear that follow a perceived
hurt or offense, or (2) unforgiveness that follows ruminating about the transgression, by substituting
positive emotions such as unselfish love, empathy, compassion, or even romantic love.
Forgiveness is a concept with philosophical, theological and psychological implications. As greater
emphasis is placed on positive psychology, forgiveness has risen to major status ... Show more

Pro and Cons of Forgiveness
We can gain some benefits from forgiveness. One of the benefits of forgiveness is that it is good for
our heart. This is because when we try to forgive other people, we can train our heart to be more
patience when we are dealing in some issues in our daily life. Besides that, forgiveness also can
always train us to be more forgiven people rather than someone who hold revenge towards others,
which is not good for our heart. It can cause the hatred within our heart. According to Siromi (2012),
forgiveness reflects our heart attitude towards God and the person who sinned.
In this context, we can forgive, because there are two components to forgiveness which is attitudinal
and transactional. Before we approach the person who sinned against us, we must approach God and
battle to have a forgiving and merciful heart. To forgive someone, we really need to be sincere so
that there would not be revenge that particular individual. We have to make sure that our heart is
ready to forgive that person and we really mean it. Thus, we will be very easy and the peaceful
finally be with us. Our heart will be in peace because there is no more hatred and we can go through
our life happily. So, the forgiveness is really good for our heart. It trains us to be more patient in
order to deal with person who did wrong to us. It also gives us a mercy heart so that there will be no
revenge between that particular individual and

Forgiveness In The Novel Disgrace
Disgrace is a novel by the Nobel prize–winning writer Coetzee set in the post–apartheid period in
South Africa, a period when people were trying their best to learn to forgive the past wrong done by
the oppressive, ethnic government. The question of what it means to forgive is raised in the novel.
Forgiveness is seen in the South African society as something conditional, the wrongdoers have to
do something so that they can be forgiven. The Promotion of National Unity and Reconciliation Act
34 of 1995 established a Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) to help those victims who
were uncomfortable to forgive. It forged a new relationship among amnesty, trust, and forgiveness–
in forgiving, people are not being asked to forget, but to remember, so that such atrocities will not
happen again. In this essay, I will first talk about the Truth and Reconciliation Commission so as to
criticise its presumption of the significance of truth revelation. I will support my notion with
reference to some scenes in the novel Disgrace and point out some characteristics of forgiveness.
Then I will put forward what I think it means to forgive a past wrong and finally question the
necessity of the existence of the Commission.

Even though many circumstances need forgiveness and God often calls is to forgive. Everyone

enormously important for a relationship to move on.
According to the bible god desires that we as humans seek forgiveness. Forgiveness isn't always
pleasant to give to somebody, and giving forgiveness isn't always apparent. No doubt that

As read in Matthew 6:14–15 "14 For if you forgive other people when they sin against you, your

Persuasive Essay On Forgiveness
In a biblical manner, forgiveness roughly translates to "letting go". Instead of holding a grudge to
the offender, we should give them pardon. In Luke 11:4, we are given the passage of: "And forgive
us our sins; for we also forgive every one that is indebted to us. And lead us not into temptation; but
deliver us from evil." Jesus used an example of this when comparing a person seeking repayment
from a debt found in Matthew 18:23–35. Likewise, the act of forgiving does not come easy. In order
to begin the journey of forgiveness, one should first let go of any resentment towards the particular
person or situation that is causing destress. Once the resentment is gone, one can attempt to abandon
the notion of being rewarded for their loss whether financial, personal, or something else.
Forgiveness also entails benefits that can improve health and increase our progress towards living a
wholesome Christian life. Proverbs 14:30 tells us that a heart with a peace and calmness in it gives
life to the body but one with jealousy and bitterness leads to wrong desires similar to rotting bones.
However, the greatest part to forgiving others is to exemplify how God forgave us for our own sins.
In order to be forgiven by God, we must forgive people for their sins. If we fail to do this though,
God will not forgive us for our sins (Matthew 6:14–15). 2 Peter 1:10 dictates that Christians should
be more eager in making their calling and election since doing these makes sure that we will never
fail. Our calling is God's salvation for us while our election is God picking us to be saved. Since
God called and elected on us from his own glory and goodness, we must serve as examples to others
by pursuing Godly virtues while actively living in a Christian lifestyle. Numerous people struggle in
letting go of their respective past and carry on their baggage into their future. Not only does this
prevent them from growing, it prevents them from achieving a happy life. As we interact with
people similar to this, we can show them that they too can be resolved from their past issues.
Personally, I forgive pretty easily as I think holding grudges is a waste of time and does not
accomplish anything positive. However, I did have a hard time

Forgiveness In The Seventh Man
Life, as we all know is saturated with misfortune. Most of us are able to go through these and learn
from and exempt ourselves. Yet, this isn't always the case. People are faced with bone riveting
experiences that often take a long time to get over, if they ever do get over it. These episodes brew
in our brain popping up at the most random points often bringing our tone down. Although these
experiences may scare us and fill us with ruefulness and penitence, we can't continue to live in the
past and let these regrets habituate us. Self forgiveness is a remedy to healing and to moving on in
life, no matter how hard it is. In "The Seventh Man" the narrator hassles with forgiveness after
losing his friend K in a barbarous storm. This event led to many issues for the narrator, he stated, " It
just barely missed me, but in my place it swallowed everything that mattered most to me and swept
it off to another world. I took years to find it again and to recover from the experiences(Murakami,
133)." These issues get so bad that they leaked into his dreams. K ends up pulling the seventh man
into the wave. This acts as a symbol of how the seventh man feels. He feels he should've died after
his friend's death. This is better known as agent regret. He ended up, "Regretting that the weather is
bad(Sherman, 155)." Although this might serve as a simple statement it has much complexity behind
it. He ended up regretting living and wishing he died. That just shows how a tragic event can

have offended someone else. Therefore, forgiving someone is therapeutic for the victim, and the

people feel pain from being wronged, they experience an "injustice gap." Worthington defines
"injustice gap" as, "the difference between the way the person would like a transgression to be
resolved, and the way things are perceived to be currently" (Worthington Jr, 2005, pg. 121).
Furthermore, Worthington talks about two types of forgiveness to alleviate destructive responses.

She is caught in between forgiveness. As a Christian and a wife, what does forgiveness mean to her

Forgiveness: Is the act of wiping away, pardoning or forgoing a debt. As a Christian, if we forgive it

Forgiveness isn't granted because the person deserves it, but it is an act of mercy and grace covered
by love.
Human beings are naturally sinful. The first people Adam and Eve disobeyed God right in front of

Examples Of Forgiveness In The Tempest
The Tempest was published in 1623 and is considered one of the last plays of William Shakespeare.
This play is accepted as virtuous as Prospero, the protagonist, rises above his own problems and
dark depths of disturbance and pain to attain a level of tranquility. His mind elevates to such levels
that human frailties do not worry him; it is this mental elevation of Prospero that forms the theme of
forgiveness of the play.
After the shipwreck, we find Alonso in a lot of stress and mood of despair reaching to the level of
insanity. Alonso had totally forgotten about the sins and had no guilt for the wrong committed by
him, Prospero was pleased with the profound success of what he had set out to do as revenge. When
Ariel recites the success of the plot with delight and said that if he had a human, his heart would

Yet among the three sinners regeneration is evident in really true terms in Alonso alone. His
redemption begins soon after the loss of his son in the shipwreck. It is a nerve racking anguish of a
father. The hazy reflection over his past sins is brought into sharp focus when Ariel, in the shape of a
harpy, reminds him of his crimes against Prospero and Miranda twelve years ago. It is here that his
repentance becomes both intense and genuine. This redemption and repentance is, however, not
visible in the other two sinners. Sebastian is a minor character, so Shakespeare passes lightly over
his psychological insights and elevation but Antonio is a major character, and his crime is worst of
the three, since he betrays a generously trusting brother. Though he returns Prospero his dukedom of
Milan, there is more than an ample hint that Antonio does so more out of fear of Prospero's potent
magic power rather than any genuine

The theme of forgiveness in the film is the forgiveness of others, but it is also personal forgiveness
of yourself. This is shown through Victor and Arnold's complicated and rough relationship. It also
shows how alike they are. Their relationship has layers, on the top you look at it and think that they
have nothing in common and are a father and son destined to be set against each other, but, as you
go deeper, you see what set them against each other is what links them, what make them similar.
The reflections of their interactions with others, their ways of dealing with grief, and their inability
to forgive themselves are a mirror image. At the end of the film, Victor is able to ultimately forgive
his father because he fully understands what he went through, and can relate to it too. He can see it
in himself and realizes how alike they are. Victor and Arnold were emotionally separated and their
relationship was strained and complicated because they hurt others, including themselves and each
other. They put their blinders up to understanding each other and forgiving. They went against each
other, instead of coming together in their similarities, and in this, proved even more how similar

Importance And Significance Of Forgiveness
The topic of this paper is the importance and significance of "forgiveness" in resolving conflict. To
resolve a conflict, forgiveness is at some point is a must. It may not come immediately but one has
to be open to having the ability to both give and receive it in order for reconciliation to be
successful. One may ask how forgiving someone they are in conflict with is important to achieving a
positive outcome such as reconciliation. This paper is going to explore that question and show that
yes, having the ability to forgive, is very significant in finding a resolution to the conflict. It will
research viewpoints on forgiveness and its much needed contribution to resolve a conflict. It will
look into how the field of psychology views the importance of forgiveness and that of a biblical
worldview and even the effects it can have on your daily health. Not everyone looks at forgiveness
the same, most all want some kind of resolution or reconciliation when conflicts arise. In some
people, forgiveness comes naturally but in others it can be learned. Ephesians 4:32 "Be kind to one
another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you" (Holy Bible ESV). The
purpose of this paper is providing research to show the importance of forgiveness, both of oneself
and to others, because without it, some conflicts become never–ending. Forgiveness is a "way of
healing human relationships and solving human conflicts" (Gopin, 2001, para. 1). Forgiveness

It takes a strong person to say sorry, but it takes a stronger person to forgive. Throughout our life

indicative of the nature of forgiveness. Forgiveness, in its everyday connotation, is a mechanism that

Forgiveness : The Idea Of Forgiveness
The notion of forgiveness is an important concept in our lives. It is defined as the act of apologizing
or making up for the wrong one might have done to something or someone, including themselves.
Often the concept of forgiveness is associated with atonement as one tries to make up for the wrong
done in a situation or an event. However, the emotions associated with forgiveness vary and are
dependent upon the person asking for forgiveness and the person receiving it. Many times it is
difficult for human beings to forgive others when the mistake that they have made is hurtful and
significant. This can lead to an outbreak of negative emotions such as pain, suffering, despair, etc.
Although, when one deeply looks into the idea of forgiveness, it is evident to say that another name
for it is love and acceptance. To forgive someone, is a way to affirm that one is acknowledging the
attempt of another human to make amends. The one, who has forgiven, is removing the ego and is
instead following the path of love, faith, and affection. In this reflection paper, I will further speak
on the notion of forgiveness through looking at the story of the prodigal son, how forgiveness affects
us, what role does it play in our lives, and why is it important to our existence.

Paper About Forgiveness

  • 1. Paper About Forgiveness RE Assignment Anthony.Pulling PART 1 The concept of forgiveness is a very important forgiveness, without it the world would be a very very different place.Forgiveness is the action or process of being forgiven, or to be forgiven. Forgiveness has been displayed in the article because Kaine Barnett carelessly drove his car into the emergency stopping lane on the Hume Highway killing Sarah Frazer and Geoffry Clarke the tow truck helping her. The father of Sarah Frazer feels very sorry for Kaine he said in court " we don't want Kaine to be in prison for the next 18 months to 3 years. Kaine could have been my son. Any of this could of happened to any of our families. We don't hate him. We feel so sorry that he has to go through this. The ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The catholic sacrament of forgiveness is very important because no one is perfect ever since Adam and Eve were tempted by the devil to eat the apple from the garden of Eden no human being was perfect (Except for Mary). Imagine today's society without forgiveness and how many sins would be left unforgiven. Jesus Christ himself displayed a mind blowing level of forgiveness when he was being nailed to the cross. "...33When they came to the place called The Skull, there they crucified Him and the criminals, one on the right and the other on the left. 34But Jesus was saying, "Father, forgive them; for they do not know what they are doing." And they cast lots, dividing up His garments among themselves. 35And the people stood by, looking on. And even the rulers were sneering at Him, saying, "He saved others; let Him save Himself if this is the Christ of God, His Chosen One."..." Luke 23:24 (BibleHub.com) In the article it is clearly stated that Kaine has remorse for his actions "One factor is Kaine's remorse. It is harder to hate someone when they already hate themselves. Since causing the two deaths, Kaine has suffered post–traumatic stress disorder with its associated depression, anxiety, flashbacks, sleeplessness and suicidal thoughts. " (The Age ... • 3. Christian Interpretation Of Forgiveness Forgiveness is the deliberate and voluntary process by which the victim of the wrong–doing undergoes a change of view, letting go of any negative emotions and ultimately granting the offender a form of release (APA, 2006). The intertwining cultural events during the writings of the Christian Bible and the Islamic Qur'an have undoubtedly influenced their interpretations of forgiveness as many differences are present in how they are understood, ultimately affecting the implications of these teachings for modern adherents. The Qur'an states that a person's forgiveness is conditional on the person's ability to repent towards Allah which differs from Christianity's more liberal approach focussing on the forgiveness between followers. This can be ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The Lord's Prayer includes the lines: "And forgive us our trespasses; as we forgive those who trespass against us" showing the predominant theological understanding that interpersonal and divine forgiveness are inextricably linked (Catechism of Catholic Church, 2005). This message is shown through the most well–known Christian prayer, emphasising that forgiveness from God is directly associated with forgiveness in the lives of Christian followers. Furthermore John 8:7 highlights the importance of forgiveness in relation to one's own salvation when Jesus states "one of you who is without sin be the first to throw a stone at her" (Bible Gateways, 2015). Such a statement from the Son of God can be interpreted to be focussing on 'forgivers', voicing that no one has the right to begrudge someone else as such an action would be hypocritical (Bible Gateways, 2015). Matthew 18:21–22 also explains how Christians should forgive each other when Jesus tells Peter that men should forgive each other "not seven times, but seventy–seven times" (Henrys, 2015). Taking this message from an explicit view, it can be assumed that one must only forgive the offender a limit of seventy–seven times however the implicit message being told by Jesus is that one must be prepared to forgive numerous times as ... • 5. Forgiveness And The Future Forgiving is often a conscious decision to let go of the pain, anger and bitterness arising from hurtful situations, then move on and live our lives the best we can despite the past. Forgiveness can take time and it can be difficult, but it's essential for boosting happiness, mental and physical health. Forgiveness is a funny thing; it warms the heart and cools the sting."– William Arthur Ward Forgiveness does not change the past, but it does enlarge the future."– Paul Boese. The more I know, the less I understand. All the things I thought I knew, I'm learning again. The more i introspect the more ia become inexcusable, unforgivable. From morning to night, as from cradle to the grave, is but a succession of changes so gentle and easy that we can scarcely mark their progress. The process of change and challenge is always at work. For some change brings cheer, whereas for others it may mean moments of chagrin. Both painful and pleasant, a shift from the established order to a new one is inevitable. There is no monotony. The breakup of joint family system in India is a case for study and a standing example of change that has overtaken us so fast. The emergence of nuclear family is a telling tribute to the process of change over which we have no control whatsoever. That the Indian society is at the crossroads is not a matter of fiction, but a vigorous reality. The glamour and glitter that we see around is the result of consistent and conscious efforts that have gone into the making of 'changing patterns of society' everywhere under the sun. Change is not made without inconvenience, even from worse to better." –Richard Hooker. • 7. The Bible And Forgiveness What injuries to yourself from others would you find especially hard to get over or forgive? Explain. The Bible says, "Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you" (Ephesians 4:32). I personally try to live by the Bible every day. Times do get hard and certain circumstances hurt more than others, but we are all called to forgive one another at the end of the day. Forgiveness and getting over a situation are, in my opinion, two separate acts. Forgiveness should be given to all, but completely ignoring and disregarding the situation is not appropriate. I have a hard time in trusting others; every person is broken and flawed, and although it is not always meant to be intentionally hurtful, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This was the longest relationship I had ever been in, and he was my first love. I don't give out trust to many people, and he was the first person who I felt as if I could trust my life with. He was able to gain all my trust and he held me in the palm of his hand. I thought we would last for a long time and that we would never give up on one another. Whenever I moved, we were both determined to keep our relationship alive and well until he could come down to Georgia to live. He was soon to be enlisted. I had always thought highly of him, even when he was at his lowest. I never thought bad about him or felt as if there was any reason for me not to trust him. Right before he went off to boot camp I found out he had been cheating on me the last six months of our relationship with many different girls who claimed to be some of my "best friends." I was hurt more than ever, and it was because I trusted that he would be faithful and that the girls would have enough sense to not be involved in unfaithful acts with my boyfriend at the time. My trust for both him and my friends were lost that day, and my heart ached of a pain that it had never felt before. I couldn't breathe, and I did not know how I was going to go on with my life. No person knew what to say to make me feel better. I blamed myself. I blamed myself for trusting someone who did not deserve my trust. • 9. Forgiveness Being able to forgive and forget allows people to continue to move on with their lives instead of dwelling on a situation. However, would one be able to forget about a situation more easily if they have forgiven their transgressor first? Saima, Bierman, and MacLeod (2014) proposed a study to address this question. They believe this is an important question to address because if forgiving makes forgetting easier, it will allow people who are able to forgive to release offenses, empowering them to preserve valued relationships and move on with their lives. The independent variable presented in these studies is forgiveness and the dependent variable is the ability to forget. The participants were between the ages of 18 and 39 and were made up ... Then were given one minute to give as much detail on the scenario as they could. Finally participants then responded a second time to the forgiveness questionnaire. The results of this study were that unforgiven scenarios were observed as more serious (M=6.750, SD= .32) than forgiven scenarios (M=4.03, SD= .85). It was also observed that participants were more motivated to forgive the offender for scenarios that had been forgiven (M=2.92, SD=. 76) then unforgiven (M=5.84, SD= .76) (Saima, Bierman, & MacLeod, 2014). • 11. Forgiveness And Its Impact On Education To resolve a conflict, forgiveness is at some point is a must. It may not come immediately, but one has to be open to having the ability to both give and receive it in order for reconciliation to be successful. One may ask how forgiving someone they are in conflict with is important to achieving a positive outcome, such as reconciliation. This paper is going to explore that question and show that yes, having the ability to forgive, is very significant in finding a resolution to the conflict. It will research, viewpoints on forgiveness and its much needed contribution to resolve a conflict. It will look into how the field of psychology views the importance of forgiveness and that of a biblical worldview and even the effects it can have on your daily health. Not everyone looks at forgiveness the same, most all want some kind of resolution or reconciliation when conflicts arise. In some people, forgiveness comes naturally but in others it can be learned. Ephesians 4:32 "Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you" (Holy Bible ESV). The purpose of this paper is providing research to show the importance of forgiveness, both of oneself and to others, because without it, some conflicts become never–ending. Forgiveness is a "way of healing human relationships and solving human conflicts" (Gopin, 2001, para. 1). • 13. Forgiveness Essay Forgiveness Jesus forgave many sinners throughout his ministry, but many people were upset at his actions e.g. when Jesus healed a paralysed man. In Palestine it was the general belief that sickness was caused by sin. When Jesus saw how much faith the man had he forgave all of his sins, and the man was able to pick up his mat and walk home. Jesus believed that he could heal physically and spiritually, but the Pharisees were extremely upset because they thought Jesus was blaspheming as only God could forgive sins. He had kept to the house rules, by doing what his father wanted and therefore he expected a reward for doing so. In the same way the Pharisees thought that by carrying out their specific practices and keeping their rules, they were the only people who deserved heaven. As we all know, forgiving people today causes great difficulties within our local society and on a worldly scale. On September 11 2001 there were major terrorist attacks in New York by the al–Qaeda group. The American President, George W Bush, reacted to this by declaring a war against all terrorists. There was great debate on how to react to such a horrific event and no one is certain whether war was the right decision to make. Although the terrorist attacks were great atrocities, with many losing their lives and others injured, personally I don't think that declaring a war was a very responsible action. Whilst America was at war, hurt and bloodshed increased and although it helped with a few problems a lot more were uncovered. Old Testament laws suggest that you should seek revenge for how you were wronged – "an eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth". • 15. Forgiveness Is Often Misunderstood Forgiveness is often misunderstood. Forgiveness is a bunch of mixed behaviors and emotions that humans express in their life–time. Many people are motivated to forgive because of their morals and how humans feel towards one another. There are different ways of how people express forgiveness. A way people show forgiveness is when they accept, and respect of the reality of what happened and to find a resolution. People's actions are based on the feelings towards someone who caused harm to another. Some people find forgiveness a hard thing to do because of how they cope with it. Nietzsche Forgiveness And Forgetfulness Philosophical Anthropology (Seminar) – Term Paper (Draft) Krishna S (0607197) In this paper, I am going to elucidate on the significance of the concepts of forgiveness and forgetfulness in Hannah Arendt and Friedrich Nietzsche's conceptualization of human action and agency. Remedial Action: Forgiveness and Promise Hannah Arendt in her book, The Human Condition, delineates the three fundamental human activities that set up the Vita Activa: Labour, Work and Action. Arendt constitutes them to be fundamental because each of these "corresponds to one of the basic conditions under which life on earth has been given to man". (Arendt, 1958:7). The shadow of the object is incorporated, thus splitting the ego into the one [who] seeks to detach the libido from the object [thus allowing the subject to live and the object to die], the other to maintain this position of the libido [which is bonded to the immortal internal version of the object. The play Purgatorio written by Ariel Dorfman explores the concepts of revenge, repentance and forgiveness that progresses deeply into the concept of love and betrayal. The play attempts to provide the answers to questions such as, how can people move on with their lives without forgiveness? But how can you forgive someone who does not want to be forgiven? Purgatorio is a glimpse of what can actually happen to people whose sins of their past can still haunts them even after death. Honestly, when the lights first opened and only revealed a plain white set with a chair, table, and a bed, disappointing thoughts flooded my mine as I assumed that my money will be put into waste by spending it to a play that consists of only two characters placed in a boring set. Initially, we know nothing about the man and the woman. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Needless to say, this is the "judgement" area after one's death where a soul must achieve the state of repentance before being accepted to heaven. It was clear why the walls were stained with white; however, Dorfman interpreted purgatory as a familiar therapy or interrogation session situated in a room that can be associated with an asylum or prison which is why the woman was in black while the man was dressed like a doctor. The bareness of the room heightens the process of the purgation of the souls and to literally portray purgatory as a lifeless place wherein the individuals can only focus on the purification of their souls. The souls are trapped and can only go out if they abide with the rules and procedures which are being monitored by a CCTV camera. A mind might wonder why there is a camera in the purgatory. One time my friend took money from my wallet, I think it was a $20 bill and I caught him in the act. We were both in the car and I parked at the mall and I left the car for about five minutes and when I was walking back I saw in reach into my glove box and take money out of my wallet. I was shocked and confronted him right away. He said he needed money to pay for his brother back. The Amish are very religious and spiritual people who believe that forgiveness is more than a good thing to do but forgiveness is the thing to do. In the Amish perspective the test of faith is action so forgiving their children's killers with hours of death really shows what kind of people they are and is very inspiring. The way the Amish people responded to the killings was such a shock. One of the things I liked about that article was when they said that religion was not used to justify rage but to inspire goodness, forgiveness, and grace. Even members of the community visited the gunman's widow and parents. For the majority of us the process of forgiveness is a journey and may never happen so just the fact they forgave so quickly was viewed as emotionally unhealthy to many. Forgiveness has a meaning of not holding a grudge and the Amish were very clear that it does not make the shooter free from punishment. If he were to live the Amish people would have wanted him to be locked up but not for reasons of revenge but for the purpose of protecting other children. Most people growing up learn about forgiveness and have experienced it one way or another. People need to learn that forgiveness is an essential part of healing and is a process towards inner peace. The whole process of forgiveness does not usually involve the offender, most of the time not at all until confronted. • 25. Definition Of Forgiveness Can justice and forgiveness go hand in hand? Can a man with the lust for blood and revenge punish and forgive his indicted villain? As much as we would love to think that it's possible to punish and forgive, we would only be clouding our judgement when we know full well that we cannot have both. To forgive means to stop feeling angry or resentful toward someone for an offense, flaw, or mistake. Justice means the action of punishing or correcting something or someone that is not behaving according to what is morally right and fair. In The Forgiveness Project, there was a man named Eric Lomax, a British officer during World War II, was captured by the Japanese and was sent to a prisoner–of–war camp where he was tortured by a man named Takashi Nagase. When Eric got out of the camp that filled his days with torment and suffering, there was a part of him that did not come back with him; his family noticed the change in his heart and it almost scared them. As each day passed, Eric's heart grew darker, hungry for the justice of his tormentor, Takashi. One day, his wife found him and heard the regret and sadness in his heart; he wanted to apologize to Eric for all the wrong he had done to him. Eric went to one of the old camps and saw Takashi. After all these years, his abuser was standing right in front of him asking for forgiveness. Eric expected to be filled with rage and anger, but he ended up forgiving Takashi for his deeds and they became good friends until death parted them. Eric did not expect to forgive his tormentor, much like none of us except to forgive those who wronged us. Our actions are driven by emotions but not all of them are same for everyone else. The purpose of this article was to bring attention to the topic of self–forgiveness within this growing body of research. The definitions of self–forgiveness from many disciplines were reviewed along with what features of self–forgiveness differ from those of intrapersonal forgiveness emphasizing the need for an increase in empirical research on the subject matter. The simple act of defining self–forgiveness in a way that is applicable across disciplines provides counselor and researchers a better starting point when approaching the topic of self–forgiveness. One concept I found very interesting was the distinction between true self–forgiveness and pseudo self–forgiveness. It is intuitive for me to believe that it is not possible for pseudo–self forgiveness to have the same effect as true self–forgiveness, but with out research on the matter how can one be sure. When I read that the test for self–forgiveness cannot differentiate between the two, it made me wonder if it is difficult for a person or a counselor to know the difference. It also made me wonder if it is possible that simply believing that things are better can actually make someone feel better. I also found the question regarding the appropriateness of self–forgiveness to be interesting. When a person believes something is their fault that is not, what approach should a counselor take? Is it more appropriate to spend the time and effort on developing the skills to know what happened was not the client's fault, or is it more appropriate to provide the skills that will allow the person to forgive his or herself for what they believed they caused to happen? While this would have to be considered on a case–by–case basis, as a counselor it would be helpful to have more research on the topic that results in guidance on how to approach these types of ... The insane are not responsible, because they have lost the thinking capacity and judgment. However, human beings are also not perfect, sometime mistakes do occur and happens. Most human beings have been subject to intense feelings of hatred for someone else – family member, a lover, or a total stranger – over a disagreement. In the moment, we desperately want to hurt the opposing party physically and emotionally, but after the fact we realize that the spat was nothing in comparison with our love for them. We see an example of this in Shakespeare's The Tempest, in the magician, Prospero. Prospero ascends the staircase of forgiveness and self– discovery through the course of the novel. Even though he services Prospero with graciousness, the one thing Ariel desperately desires is his freedom. Over the course of the novel, readers see Prospero and Ariel develop a friendship outside of the usual master/servant relationship; they gain a sense of extreme trust in each other. Prospero begins entrusting more personal tasks to Ariel, unlike Caliban who carries firewood and does chores. Prospero asks Ariel to keep tabs on his brother and the royal party and "keep them living" (II.i.296). With increasing satisfaction for the tasks Ariel does for him, Prospero praises him more, saying, "Of my instruction hast thou nothing bated," and "Bravely... hast thou [performed]," (III.iii.83–85). In the end, Ariel is the one who convinces Prospero to forgive his brother and his accomplices, telling Prospero, "If you now beheld [the royal party], your affections [w]ould become tender... He asks Prospero, "Do you love me, master? No?" and Prospero replies "Dearly, my delicate Ariel," (IV.i.49–50). The act that hurt or offended us always remain a part of our life, but forgiveness can lessen its grip on you and help you focus on other, more positive parts of your life. Forgiveness can even lead to feelings of understanding, empathy and compassion for the one who hurt us. Forgiveness doesn't mean that we deny the other person's responsibility for hurting us, and it doesn't minimize or justify the wrong. We can forgive the person without excusing the act. Forgiveness is a process that involves a change in emotion and attitude regarding an offender. Most scholars view this an intentional and voluntary process, driven by a deliberate decision to forgive. Theorists differ in the extent to which they believe forgiveness also implies replacing the negative emotions with positive attitudes including compassion and benevolence. However, before we can tackle what forgiveness is, we need to address some faulty thinking when it comes to forgiveness. There are several things that forgiveness is not. It is not having a good feeling towards the person who wronged you. If you are waiting to feel good towards the person who hurt you, you are going to wait a long time. Forgiveness is not simply a feeling. Forgiveness is also not ignoring the offense or forgetting that it ever happened. You cannot pretend something didn't happen. God is perfect, and cannot forget anything, but forgetting is a passive human trait. Choosing not to remember is active, and that is choosing not to hold sin against another by not bringing it up again, or shaming another person with it, or using it against a person in any way. Forgiveness brings consequences. The offense committed may mean that we cannot trust that person again, and that is not wrong. It would be wrong, however, to refuse to ever trust that person by not accepting any efforts to establish trust. There can also be other serious consequences of sin, and those consequences do not make you unforgiving. "There is no promise in Scripture that God's forgiveness will eradicate all the consequences of sin." Forgiveness means resisting thoughts of revenge. Forgiveness means wishing the other person well and having sympathy for them. It means praying for them. Forgiveness seeks reconciliation and always being willing to serve them (Exodus 23:4). This is because when we try to forgive other people, we can train our heart to be more patience when we are dealing in some issues in our daily life. Besides that, forgiveness also can always train us to be more forgiven people rather than someone who hold revenge towards others, which is not good for our heart. It can cause the hatred within our heart. According to Siromi (2012), forgiveness reflects our heart attitude towards God and the person who sinned. In this context, we can forgive, because there are two components to forgiveness which is attitudinal and transactional. Before we approach the person who sinned against us, we must approach God and battle to have a forgiving and merciful heart. Forgiveness In The Novel Disgrace Disgrace is a novel by the Nobel prize–winning writer Coetzee set in the post–apartheid period in South Africa, a period when people were trying their best to learn to forgive the past wrong done by the oppressive, ethnic government. The question of what it means to forgive is raised in the novel. Forgiveness is seen in the South African society as something conditional, the wrongdoers have to do something so that they can be forgiven. The Promotion of National Unity and Reconciliation Act 34 of 1995 established a Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) to help those victims who were uncomfortable to forgive. It forged a new relationship among amnesty, trust, and forgiveness– in forgiving, people are not being asked to forget, but to remember, so that such atrocities will not happen again. In this essay, I will first talk about the Truth and Reconciliation Commission so as to criticise its presumption of the significance of truth revelation. • 55. Persuasive Essay On Forgiveness In a biblical manner, forgiveness roughly translates to "letting go". Instead of holding a grudge to the offender, we should give them pardon. In Luke 11:4, we are given the passage of: "And forgive us our sins; for we also forgive every one that is indebted to us. And lead us not into temptation; but deliver us from evil." Jesus used an example of this when comparing a person seeking repayment from a debt found in Matthew 18:23–35. Likewise, the act of forgiving does not come easy. In order to begin the journey of forgiveness, one should first let go of any resentment towards the particular person or situation that is causing destress. Once the resentment is gone, one can attempt to abandon the notion of being rewarded for their loss whether financial, personal, or something else. Forgiveness also entails benefits that can improve health and increase our progress towards living a wholesome Christian life. Proverbs 14:30 tells us that a heart with a peace and calmness in it gives life to the body but one with jealousy and bitterness leads to wrong desires similar to rotting bones. However, the greatest part to forgiving others is to exemplify how God forgave us for our own sins. In order to be forgiven by God, we must forgive people for their sins. If we fail to do this though, God will not forgive us for our sins (Matthew 6:14–15). 2 Peter 1:10 dictates that Christians should be more eager in making their calling and election since doing these makes sure that we will never fail. Our calling is God's salvation for us while our election is God picking us to be saved. Since God called and elected on us from his own glory and goodness, we must serve as examples to others by pursuing Godly virtues while actively living in a Christian lifestyle. Numerous people struggle in letting go of their respective past and carry on their baggage into their future. Not only does this prevent them from growing, it prevents them from achieving a happy life. As we interact with people similar to this, we can show them that they too can be resolved from their past issues. Personally, I forgive pretty easily as I think holding grudges is a waste of time and does not accomplish anything positive. However, I did have a hard time ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 57. Forgiveness In The Seventh Man Life, as we all know is saturated with misfortune. Most of us are able to go through these and learn from and exempt ourselves. Yet, this isn't always the case. People are faced with bone riveting experiences that often take a long time to get over, if they ever do get over it. These episodes brew in our brain popping up at the most random points often bringing our tone down. Although these experiences may scare us and fill us with ruefulness and penitence, we can't continue to live in the past and let these regrets habituate us. Self forgiveness is a remedy to healing and to moving on in life, no matter how hard it is. In "The Seventh Man" the narrator hassles with forgiveness after losing his friend K in a barbarous storm. This event led to many issues for the narrator, he stated, " It just barely missed me, but in my place it swallowed everything that mattered most to me and swept it off to another world. I took years to find it again and to recover from the experiences(Murakami, 133)." These issues get so bad that they leaked into his dreams. K ends up pulling the seventh man into the wave. This acts as a symbol of how the seventh man feels. He feels he should've died after his friend's death. This is better known as agent regret. He ended up, "Regretting that the weather is bad(Sherman, 155)." Although this might serve as a simple statement it has much complexity behind it. He ended up regretting living and wishing he died. That just shows how a tragic event can ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 59. Worthington On Forgiveness FORGIVENESS Throughout life everyone has been in a situation where they were offended or they have offended someone else. Therefore, forgiving someone is therapeutic for the victim, and the offended. However, when someone is wronged, justice is what they seek. On the contrary, when people feel pain from being wronged, they experience an "injustice gap." Worthington defines "injustice gap" as, "the difference between the way the person would like a transgression to be resolved, and the way things are perceived to be currently" (Worthington Jr, 2005, pg. 121). Furthermore, Worthington talks about two types of forgiveness to alleviate destructive responses. First, is called the decisional forgiveness. Decisional forgiveness is when the ... • 61. Examples Of Forgiveness In Forgiveness FORGIVENESS IN MARRIAGE Joy has been married for five years now. Her husband is always verbally, physically abusing her. She has tried to visit all the marriage counselor around her. Her husband does not see it as an issue. She has gone back to her parent's time and again but the man keeps coming back asking for forgiveness. Once in a while, she has gone back having forgiven the husband. But he keeps redoing it. As a Christian wife, she is in a catch 22 situation. She no longer knows what forgiveness means. She is caught in between forgiveness. As a Christian and a wife, what does forgiveness mean to her and her marriage according to the Bible. Forgiveness: Is the act of wiping away, pardoning or forgoing a debt. As a Christian, if we forgive it means we forgo the hurt we underwent caused by someone and start the relationship a fresh. Forgiveness isn't granted because the person deserves it, but it is an act of mercy and grace covered by love. Human beings are naturally sinful. The first people Adam and Eve disobeyed God right in front of him in the garden of Eden. Since then people have been sinning. According to Roman 3:23 "For all have sinned and come short of the glory of God." This verse only tells us that human being is born sinners. In marriages, couples will sin against ... As was the case in Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden. Adam realized he had sinned once he bit that fruit. What this did has he felt some sense of shame, and for the first time, he realized he was naked. Adam immediately seeks God. Asking for forgiveness tames you down, and you want to ask for forgiveness. Even in marriages couples who go that route, understand what comes along with sinning. • 63. Examples Of Forgiveness In The Tempest The Tempest was published in 1623 and is considered one of the last plays of William Shakespeare. This play is accepted as virtuous as Prospero, the protagonist, rises above his own problems and dark depths of disturbance and pain to attain a level of tranquility. His mind elevates to such levels that human frailties do not worry him; it is this mental elevation of Prospero that forms the theme of forgiveness of the play. After the shipwreck, we find Alonso in a lot of stress and mood of despair reaching to the level of insanity. Alonso had totally forgotten about the sins and had no guilt for the wrong committed by him, Prospero was pleased with the profound success of what he had set out to do as revenge. When Ariel recites the success of the plot with delight and said that if he had a human, his heart would have melted seeing the anguish of the sufferers, on listening to him Prospero reaches his merciful decision which it is obvious was firmly in his ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Yet among the three sinners regeneration is evident in really true terms in Alonso alone. His redemption begins soon after the loss of his son in the shipwreck. It is a nerve racking anguish of a father. The hazy reflection over his past sins is brought into sharp focus when Ariel, in the shape of a harpy, reminds him of his crimes against Prospero and Miranda twelve years ago. It is here that his repentance becomes both intense and genuine. This redemption and repentance is, however, not visible in the other two sinners. Sebastian is a minor character, so Shakespeare passes lightly over his psychological insights and elevation but Antonio is a major character, and his crime is worst of the three, since he betrays a generously trusting brother. Though he returns Prospero his dukedom of Milan, there is more than an ample hint that Antonio does so more out of fear of Prospero's potent magic power rather than any genuine ... Forgiveness In Smoke Signals In his 1998 independent film, Smoke Signals, Native American director, Chris Eyre, tells the story of Thomas Builds–the–Fire and Victor Joseph, two Indians on the Coeur d'aLene Indian reservation in Idaho. Thomas and Victor have grown up together. The death of Thomas' parents in a house fire on the 4th of July unites the two boys, even though they were infants, as Victor's father, Arnold, saved Thomas from the fire. As time passes, Arnold becomes more and more distant and abusive, drowning his sorrows in alcohol. One day he leaves Victor and his mother and disappears for good. Victor never really knew why his father left him, but felt that it was his fault. He goes through his days feeling guilty and is constantly plagued by Thomas, who annoys ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The theme of forgiveness in the film is the forgiveness of others, but it is also personal forgiveness of yourself. This is shown through Victor and Arnold's complicated and rough relationship. It also shows how alike they are. Their relationship has layers, on the top you look at it and think that they have nothing in common and are a father and son destined to be set against each other, but, as you go deeper, you see what set them against each other is what links them, what make them similar. The reflections of their interactions with others, their ways of dealing with grief, and their inability to forgive themselves are a mirror image. At the end of the film, Victor is able to ultimately forgive his father because he fully understands what he went through, and can relate to it too. He can see it in himself and realizes how alike they are. Victor and Arnold were emotionally separated and their relationship was strained and complicated because they hurt others, including themselves and each other. They put their blinders up to understanding each other and forgiving. They went against each other, instead of coming together in their similarities, and in this, proved even more how similar they are. As the traditional saying goes, "like father, like ... One may ask how forgiving someone they are in conflict with is important to achieving a positive outcome such as reconciliation. This paper is going to explore that question and show that yes, having the ability to forgive, is very significant in finding a resolution to the conflict. It will research viewpoints on forgiveness and its much needed contribution to resolve a conflict. 1). Forgiveness comes in many ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 69. Forgiveness In The Red Kayak "Forgiveness does not change the past, but enlarges the future" –Paul Blose. When you don't forgive others it is like a burden on yourself. When you hold a grudge it does more harm to yourself than the other person. People make mistakes. If you never forgave them you couldn't be happy; you will always be angry at that person and you would be miserable. Forgiveness allows someone to clear their conscience and move on with their life. Forgiveness is a theme of The Red Kayak because Brady needs to forgive Digger and J.T. for going behind his back and drilling a hole in the kayak. • 71. Definition Essay On Forgiveness To Forgive It takes a strong person to say sorry, but it takes a stronger person to forgive. Throughout our life there will be many people who will hurt us, whether or not to forgive is our choice. When someone hurts us, we get upset and/or angry with that person because of their wrong doing. By forgiving such person you are letting go of grudges, and by letting go of grudges you become free. My moral repertoire I mean the set of moral beliefs that informs our understanding of forgiveness and the criteria by which we evaluate its Karl the Nazi Soldier, who initiates our inquiry into forgiveness, represents multiple identities. He is at once a rational human being, a member and supporter of the Nazi military, a murderer, and actor and representative of the State. Forgiveness, in its everyday connotation, is a mechanism that repairs a relationship after a wrong. It requires the victim to have a change of heart, however fleeting, while releasing the transgressor from the moral debt acquired from the wrong. From this, the issue that Greiff points us to is clarified: the question is not simply whether a person can forgive the state but whether the mechanism of forgiveness can be applied to a state. As derived from our sample of literature this mechanism of forgiveness cannot be applied to the political bodies and must be located elsewhere. TRANSITION: Our course's literature provides needed insight into the role of political bodies after an atrocity in both restoring civilian life and rebuilding the state. • 77. Forgiveness : The Idea Of Forgiveness The notion of forgiveness is an important concept in our lives. It is defined as the act of apologizing or making up for the wrong one might have done to something or someone, including themselves. Often the concept of forgiveness is associated with atonement as one tries to make up for the wrong done in a situation or an event. However, the emotions associated with forgiveness vary and are dependent upon the person asking for forgiveness and the person receiving it. Many times it is difficult for human beings to forgive others when the mistake that they have made is hurtful and significant. This can lead to an outbreak of negative emotions such as pain, suffering, despair, etc. Although, when one deeply looks into the idea of forgiveness, it is evident to say that another name for it is love and acceptance. To forgive someone, is a way to affirm that one is acknowledging the attempt of another human to make amends. The one, who has forgiven, is removing the ego and is instead following the path of love, faith, and affection. In this reflection paper, I will further speak on the notion of forgiveness through looking at the story of the prodigal son, how forgiveness affects us, what role does it play in our lives, and why is it important to our existence. In the story of the prodigal son, the father forgives his son who had made a grave mistake regarding his choices with the money he was provided by his father through the division of the property.
