2. What did you find difficult/challenging?
What are you going to do to prepare and
overcome these challenges?
Time management, for me, was the most difficult. This was because
my group spent a long time trying to figure out what we wanted
to film from the trailer and where, which meant we didn’t have
enough time to film the segments to the best of our ability as we
were rushed due to the lack of time management. This also
meant we weren’t able to get any pick-up shots that were
needed and the editing time could have been longer, affecting
our overall final product. This year, I will make sure that my time
management skills are improved by splitting tasks between
group members when working in a group and keeping on top of
the work load when working individually. This, I hope will
improve my overall standard of work as this will mean I won’t
need to rush any piece of work.
3. Thinking specifically about your trailer, what
surprised you about the process of shooting
and editing a trailer?
The fast-paced editing and the precise length of
the clips. My trailer in particular – Paranormal
Activity: The Marked Ones, was particularly
fast paced in the first few seconds, meaning
my editing had to be precise in order to match
up the clips from the original and my own. The
editing stage of the project was lengthy,
meaning I had to persevere with challenges of
the clips not being the same length, some
being 0.1 second too long or vice versa.
4. What did you learn and how do you plan on
using this knowledge for the creation of
your own trailer?
The main thing I learnt from the trailer recreation
project was that the editing process is lengthy and
trailers need to be very precise in order to get the
main storyline across in a couple of minutes. I plan to
use this knowledge to plan my trailer better, I will
need to think about what is included in all trailers
and how much plot is given away. Due to the editing,
I will now know to spend longer than I did for the
trailer recreation on my own, as I am now aware of
the lengthy process.
5. What skills have you improved on
throughout the past year?
• Looking back at my work at the beginning of the year in September, I
believe my problem solving skills and creative thinking have improved.
This is shown in both The Hellion opening and the trailer recreation
project. Whilst filming The Hellion, we encountered problems such as
lighting issues – we needed near darkness but we were filming in the
middle of the day, which we overcame by my groups combined problem
solving skills. We conquered the issue by closing all the curtains in the
room, dimming the lights and lighting candles. This, in turn, created a
great atmosphere and mise en scene for our horror film opening, as it
really set the tone for the film and matched the codes and conventions of
horror films. As for the trailer recreation project, our group had some
differences that we needed to overcome, such as what sections of the
trailer to try and recreate and what to leave in. The way we solved this
was by filming all the bits that everyone wanted combined, and then each
person would choose what they wanted to include in their trailer, as we
were editing separately.
