2. What have I learnt from creating this
video?
I have found this exercise to be very helpful as it has
allowed me to feel more confident and more familiar
with certain aspects of editing and the continuity
techniques used within media. For example I now feel
confident with the term and concept of ‘film noir’. In
our video we created a film noir scene using a lamp
behind a blind, this produced low key lighting which
was our aim, it formed silhouettes of the characters in
the video and additionally it portrayed the correct mise
en scene (a romantic meal in a restaurant). Before the
prelim I had never come across film noir so this means
that I have now developed a new skill of adapting the
lighting within a room to create the intended effect.
3. What skills have I learnt?
During this prelim video it has taught me many new
skills involved in media production. For instance I have
learnt how to edit a sequence correctly in order for it
to be continuous and look more professional. Doing
this has also allowed me to become more
knowledgeable when evaluating footage. I now know
that some footage is not relevant and makes the video
more effective if it isn’t included. Previous to the
production of the preliminary video I felt very afraid to
use the premiere software, but this experience has left
me feeling self-reliant and secure when it comes to
editing the real footage for my AS grade
4. What feedback have I received?
The feedback I received from my teachers and peers
has been both positive and negative. For example I
have been told by my teacher (Ms Black) that my video
was longer than the 2 minutes it needed to be. I think
by reducing the time of the video it may engage the
audience’s attention to a larger extent making my
video more popular. On the other hand I have been
told by a peer at school that my use of ‘film noir’ was
excellent especially as it had been done using a lamp at
home. Overall the feedback I received has helped me
to understand what I must include in my real AS
coursework as well as what I need to avoid and
improve.
5. How would I improve my preliminary
video?
If I had the chance to re-create my preliminary video I
would make some improvements based on feedback and
my own evaluation. For instance I would re-film our use of
the 180o. I would ensure that the shot was taken when a
conversation was being carried out so both character’s
facial expressions are seen in the same shot and I would
additionally make sure it is filmed using a tripod. Secondly I
would only include footage that is 100% necessary and
relevant to the video as not to bore the audience. Lastly I
would make certain that a sound bridge was used using
dialogue instead of a music track so the audience realise
that a sound bridge has been included and will hopefully
create drama and tension within the scene. I hope that
ensuring all these are done will make my AS video relevant
and successful.
