Q7- Looking back at your preliminary
task, what do you feel you have learnt
in the progression from it to the full
product?
Salma Ali
Preliminary task
• Our preliminary task helped us understand that using a variety of
different shots was essential for our thriller as we needed to be
creative with the way we filmed.
• We also learnt through our preliminary that we needed to use
different shots and angles to show levels of hierarchy and supremacy.
For example we noticed that a high angle shot would often show
someone from a high position.
Mise-en-scene
We also noticed how important mise-en-scene was for our thriller as
mise-en-scene was vital for how the character would be portrayed to
the audience. Although we tried to include aspects of mise-en-scene in
our preliminarily task it still wasn’t as effective as we didn’t pay close
attention on our location or props as we just decided to use what was
in front of us.
However, our preliminarily helped us understand how important mise-
en-scene would be we wanted to follow conventions of a thriller.
180 degree rule and shots
• The 180 degree rule and the shot reverse shot was one important
factor we learned while filming our thriller as we wanted to include a
variety of different shots to keep our audience interested. However,
we only managed to do this as soon as we were used to handling the
digital camera while adjusting it to the tripod.
Imovie and Photoshop
• From the beginning of our filming I was unaware of how to use
IMovie, but I gradually progressed as I watched my group members
edit, split and import clips. Because this was constant when making
our opening I soon knew how to use it and found it fairly easy.
• However I still have trouble using Photoshop as it wasn’t my best
point. This is why we decided to leave it to two members of the group
who were familiar with using it.
