A Couple of Decades Ago?
 1G-First Generation (1980s to 1990’s)
◦ Speech
◦ 2.4 kbps speed
◦ Poor Voice quality
◦ Analog Signal
 2G-Second Generation
◦ Digital Signals
◦ 64kbps
◦ GSM
◦ SMS , MMS
3-G
 3G-Third Generation
◦ Wireless Internet
◦ Video Calling
◦ Mobile TV
 Drawbacks
◦ High Bandwidth Requirements
◦ High spectrum licensing fees
◦ Huge capital
Future Demands..!
4G
3G
2G
1G
High transfer rate
Internet access any where
 Ability to move around with the
same IP address
Utilization of Smart antennas
High resolution Mobile TV
3G vs 4G
Technology 3G 4G
Data Transfer Rate 3.1MB /sec 100MB/sec
Internet services Broadband Ultra Broadband
Mobile -TV Resolution Low High
Bandwidth 5 - 20 MHz 100+ MHz
Frequency 1.6 - 2 GHZ 2 - 8 GHz
Network Architecture Wide Area Network Hybrid Network
Signal Quality Good Best
Communication Type Circuit Switching Packet Switching
Advantages of 4G
o Affordable communication services.
o High speed high capacity and low cost per bit.
o Support for interactive multimedia, voice , streaming video,
Internet and other broadband services.
o Global access, Service portability and scalable mobile
services and variety of quality of services provided.
o Better spectral efficiency.
o Better Usage of Multimedia Applications
oVideo Conferencing
oGraphical Maps of streets, buildings, and physical
characteristics of a large metropolis on a
vehicle
Applications of 4G
4-G in PAKISTAN
o Government has already Auctioned the 3G and 4G Licenses
o Pakistan is among the latecomers in 3G but not very late in 4G
o 3 Telecom Companies bided for 3G Technology. i-e. Ufone,
Mobilink, Telenor
o Zong bided highest amount for only 4G Spectrum
o 3G auction was postponed by government for more than 1
year due to some personal political wishes but at last
Supreme Court of Pakistan ordered PTA for the auction of 3G
and 4G spectrum and hence it happened.
Disadvantages
o Battery usage is more
o Hard to implement
o Need complicated hardware
o The equipment required to implement a next generation network
is still very expensive.
o 4G Device Needed to avail services of 4G Technology
Challenges
o Competition with the next forth coming 5G.
5G technology is providing large broadcasting of
data in Gigabit which supports almost 65,000
connections.
 5G technology would provide better use of available
bandwidth.
Conclusion
Mobile…. Multimedia …..
Anytime….. Anywhere…..
Global mobility…..
Integrated wireless…..
Personalized services…..
That’s……..
