Anticline
• Anticlines are upwardly convex folded structures that form arches with the
youngest (last deposited) strata
• Anticlines are A-shaped structures that develop during crustal
deformation as the result of compression
Terminology of anticlines
Anticline
• Weathered marble
anticline at General
Carrere Lake, Chile
• Nazca Plate Under The
South American Plate
• Metamorphic Strata
• The Tuscarora Formation forms
a clear anticline in Wills
Mountain at Cumberland
Narrows, Maryland
• Pacific plate with north
American plate
• Sedimentary Strata
Syncline
syncline is a concave geological fold, with layers that dip downward
toward the center of the structure. This arrangement is opposite to that of
an arching anticline.
Syncline
• Syncline in Navajo Sandstone
• Sandstone
• North American Plate
• Synclinal folds in bedrock, near Saint-
Godard-de-Lejeune, Canada
• North America And Pacific Plate
• Metamorphosed
Monocline
• A monocline is a step-like fold in rock strata consisting of a zone of
steeper dip within an otherwise horizontal or gently-dipping sequence.
• Monocline at Colorado National
Monument
• Granitic Rock
• Pacific Plate
• Monocline in the eastern Iran
• Sedimentary Strata
• Arabian Plate & Eurasian Plate
Recumbent fold
• A recumbent fold has an essentially horizontal axial plane. When the two
limbs of a fold are essentially parallel to each other and thus
approximately parallel to the axial plane, the fold is called recumbent fold
Recumbent fold
• Recumbent fold, King Oscar Fjord
GreenLand
• Sedimentry
• North American plate
Overturned fold
• Over-turned fold -
Here the axial plane is inclined and both the limbs dip in the
same direction, usually at different angles.
Overturned fold
• Overturned Fold in Limestone,
Wasatch Mountains, Utah,
USA
• Sedimentary strata
• North American Plate with
Pacific Plate,
• Overturned anticline in the
Tian Shan Mountains
northeast of Kashi, China
• Eurasian & Indian Plate
• Sedimentary Rocks
Doubly plunging anticline near Chahar Gas, Iran
Sedimentry Strata
Arabian & Eurasian Plate
Plunging folds in Anti-Atlas Mountains near Tilemsoun, Morocco
African & Eursian Plate Effects
Igneous + Sedimentry Strata
Basin
Near Jukan, Iran
Sedimentary Rocks
Arabian & Eurasian Plate
Ptygmatic Fold:-
Have a lobate shape and look like intestines
Gold quartz veins of the alleghany district
California
North American & Pacific Plate
Re-crystallized Sedimentry
Joints
Chevron Folds
Drag Fold
Thank You 
