Gay Rights Research Paper
Gay Rights Movement "The sign of a beautiful person is that they always see beauty in others"
The gay rights movement started to advocate homosexual men and women's rights and give them
equality as well. This movement has been going on for such a long time till this current year it's
become a big topic to society. In the late 1800's to the mid 1900's gay rights became a political
debate. For many years people always were different and had different views in life. However
people were always afraid to be truthful about their rights as a person. In 1807 a man named oscar
created a poem called "Two loves". The poem became viral and popular but this changed
everything. The poem symbolized true love between two poople of the same sex. This poem was
dedicated to his lover. After a couple of months oscar's lover decided to aknowledge their opinion
on same sex relationships.over time this escalated and started to become a big movement. The
scientific humanity comittee started advocating a movement known as "gay rights" so the people
have a voice.
Berlin, austrilia, north america, and other larger countries like the U.S started voicing their opinion
on the LGBT community and their rights.the movement started with a petition to call for the ...

Ellen Degeneres Research Paper
Ellen DeGeneres is regarded as one of the greatest female television personalities of all times. She is
an award winning host of a highly rated daytime talk television program and a comedian. She is
well known to the contemporary generation as the endearing and 'sweet' voice of the Dory in
Finding Nemo. Her role in the animation brought out her natural comic style. DeGeneres is a not a
new household name in the spheres of American entertainment. During the mid–90s, she starred in
the highly rated show called 'Ellen'. In the late 1990s, she came out of the closet and announced that
she was gay. Since then, she has been at the forefront in advocating for the rights of the LGBT
group. In 2008, she married her longtime girlfriend Portia de Rossi ... Show more content on

She is regarded as an idol among young actresses and actors who are also members of the LGBT.
Her announcement generated a huge media storm in Canada, Europe and America. Some of her fans
wrote supportive emails and letters in solidarity with her sexuality choice. Ellen DeGeneres regards
1997–98 as the lowest point in her career. Reviews and ratings of her show took a nose dive because
her sexuality was the epic center of the subsequent episodes. At some point, a subsidiary of ABC in
Birmingham declined to air the episode when she declared her sexual orientation. Some of the
corporations withdrew their sponsorships of her show for fear of being linked to her controversy.
Ellen DeGeneres changed America's television industry by coming out as gay (Tauber & Jordan,
2003). She managed to convince the American society that entertainers too should have freedom to
choose their preferred sexual orientation. Most scholars agree that Ellen DeGeneres created
precedence as the first lead actress to announce that she is a member of LGBT on national
television. Soon after her announcement it became a norm for actress, singers, comedians, and
actors to come out of the closet despite the fact that most Americans marginalize members of LGBT.
Most advertisers in her show cancelled their commitment contracts for fear of offending Americans.
The show was later cancelled due to heavy criticism from viewers

The Social Consequences Of Heteronormativity
As children, we are indoctrinated into the social construct of heteronormativity. Based on our
biological sex at birth, we are given blue or pink clothes, play princesses or superheroes, and are
told either, "cross your legs and sit like a lady" or "act like a man and stop crying". As adults, we
watch movies and TV shows where the husband comes home from a long day at work to greet his
wife who has just finished making dinner. Heteronormativity refers to those norms related to gender
and sexuality which keep in place patriarchy and compulsory heterosexuality as well as other
systems and ideologies related to power (Sharma 2009). Gay, lesbian, queer, homosexual, agender,
androgynous, bigender, bisexual, butch, femme, dyke, stud, lipstick lesbian, gender fluid; There are
a seemingly endless terministic screens used to label women who love women, but they all come
down to one meaning, we aren't normal. "Even if any given terminology is a reflection of reality, by
its very nature as a terminology it is a selection of reality; and to this extent it must also function as
a deflection of reality" (Burke 1968). Viewing lesbians through heteronormative gender roles
oversimplifies complex identities into false dichotomies.
When I was around five years–old my step–sister, Kelly, came to live with us. I thought that she was
the coolest person that I had ever met. It was 1990 and she was around 25, drove a lifted jeep, had a

Women During The World War
The 1950s is an era remembered for the Cold War, communism, and June Cleaver. Most historians,
if asked about this period, will mention the 'Red Scare' and the fight to stop the pervasive reach of
communism in post–war America. Most feminists will recall the iconic image of June Cleaver and
the detrimental effect this perfect housewife had on the women's movement after the massive
employment of women during the Second World War. Often forgotten and missing from the pages
of history are the millions of women who were ostracized and subjected to discrimination based
upon their sexuality. These women lost federal jobs, their military careers came to a halt, and, in
some cases, were blacklisted from applying for civilian jobs. Not only were these women forced to
overcome gender inequality in order to support themselves in the workforce, they were also
ostracized by society and endured unending discrimination from the government and police on the
basis of their sexuality. In the face of this tremendous cultural pressure these women carved their
own communities and lives out on the edges of the social order. The pervasive fear of homosexuals
in the 1950s bred an era of anti–gay legislation that greatly contributed to the horrific discrimination
against lesbians and the development of a lesbian subculture. This fear, known as the Lavender
Scare, led to a severe climate of oppression for the emerging lesbian subculture following the
Second World War. As a result of medical

Gay Marriage Thesis
Gay marriage is a very controversial issue that has emerged in our society. Depending on your
upbringing and your mentality, individuals have formed their own personal opinions and have taken
sides, either to support or to oppose the issue. Gay marriage throughout the years has sparked so
much controversy that it was brought to the United States Supreme Court, which is known to be the
highest court of all the land. It is up to the justices of the court to determine how states and society
view and treat gay marriage. Whether it being legalized throughout the country or only in certain
states, it is, now legalized and recognized as a legitimate marriage in certain state. However,
although it is recognized and states legalized gay marriage, the ... Show more content on

After hearing the case three issues that were needed to be addressed was if same–sex marriage a
right for individuals to marry in each state, does the states have to grant marriage licenses to same–
sex couples, and lastly must states recognize same–sex marriage licenses in other jurisdictions? The
courts concluded and favored the plaintiffs, the ruling of the case was 5–4 and the majority opinion
was written by Justice Kennedy. Basically the judges in the majority believe that the fourteenth
amendment is responsible and is required to allow same–sex marriages have the right to marry in all
states that states must issue marriage licenses to those of same–sex, and lastly the license must be
recognized throughout all states. As you see an example of the some of the justices siding with the
plaintiffs, however there is another side that opposes the legalization of gay marriage. In the
Supreme Court justices of the courts are allowed to issue and write opinions on cases whether to

The Importance Of Divorce In Arizona
The law is riddled with perplexities and seemingly complicated ideas worded in ways that seem
purposefully difficult to understand. But when it comes to divorce in Arizona there are a few divorce
statutes that you don't need to worry about – the ones that talk about "grounds for divorce in
Arizona." Why is that?
Every state set its own divorce laws and divorce statutes. For instance, in Arizona, you can file for
divorce as long as one spouse has lived in Arizona for a minimum of 90 days. Additionally, Arizona
is what is called a no fault state. That means that either spouse can assert the marriage to be
irretrievably broken without either one of them being required to provide a reason for the divorce.
In other states, one spouse must request

Sexuality Is A Very Prominent Theme Throughout Rubyfruit...
Sexuality is a very prominent theme throughout Rubyfruit Jungle. Molly faces the assumption from
the world around her that she is heterosexual because she does not seem to fit into the stereotypical
clichés of a Lesbian. As a child, after she, Ted, and Leroy found out Jenna was dying, Molly wanted
to stay in Leroy's room to comfort him, "but people said it wasn't right..." (Brown). After Jenna died,
Leroy cried and yelled about how unfair it was. Carrie comforted him the best she could, but still
did not let Molly stay with him (Brown). Molly witnesses Carl comforting Ep, and narrates that she,
"...thought the only things [men] were allowed to do was shake hands or fight. But...maybe it wasn't
against the rules. Since I wasn't sure, I thought I'd...never tell. I was glad they could touch each
other. Maybe all men did that after everyone went to bed so no one would know the toughness was
for show. Or maybe...only...when someone died." (Brown). As a punishment for Molly's unladylike
behavior, Carrie tells Molly about her plan to keep her inside during the summer to train her as a
lady, and Leroy tried to stay as well. He argued with Carrie, however he obeyed, out of fear, when
Carrie told him, "You're a boy and you go out and play like boys are supposed to do. It's not right
for you to learn those things" (Brown). He backed down when, "...she started telling him what
would happen to him if he picked up women's ways... Everyone would point and laugh. Nobody

The 's Comic Books Have Recently Become A Way Of...
Comic books have recently become a way of representing and expressing ideas on human sexuality.
Politically InQueerect #2 by Dylan Edwards and Liliane and Muesli in Beyond Shades of Queer by
Leanne Franson both tell a story with non–heterosexual characters to portray different views on
sexuality. Franson's comic contains many humorous panels that involve a cat or a dog interacting
with a human being. She is concerned with the categorization of human sexuality based on sexual
behavior and orientation. On the other hand, Edward's comic has different characters that interact in
a friendly and entertaining way. He creates a story to voice his concerns about the political issues
and experiences that homosexuals have. Nevertheless, rather than writing a polemic or an op–ed,
both authors use the comic book medium to convey their opinions about the experiences that the gay
community has and the issues it faces. Representing non–normative sexuality in such a manner
makes it easier for one to examine these issues from a different perspective and to agree with the
beliefs of both authors. Leanne Franson's comic book is about the sexual labels that people use to
identify abnormal sexual behaviors and sexual orientations. Franson takes this idea of labeling
people's sexuality and trivializes it as something that is unnecessary in our society by using dogs as
an example. In doing so, she identifies a parallel between the worlds of human beings and dogs in
her comic book and she

The Stereotypes Of Homosexuality In Film
While many believe that homosexuality has only been seen in mainstream media for only a few
decades, it has actually been with America cinema since the early 1920's. The portrayal of
homosexuality in film and TV has come a very long way since the 1920's. What viewers see on TV
about homosexuality is really just a representation of America's changing public view on the
subject. While we have come to accept the topic of homosexuality in American society more
willingly, we have substituted much of our prejudice about gays with the stereotypes that we see on
TV constantly. Because as a society we are constantly forced to see these stereotypes, we are being
halted in our progression to accept all different kinds of lifestyles. When film was ... Show more

In the early fifties, lesbians were also being attacked by the film industry, portraying them as
bulldykes and troublesome neurotics. While the Hollywood was struggling to make topic of
homosexuality in films more suitable for audiences, the film Victim made its debut in the United
Kingdom. This was the first film to star a homosexual character that stands up to fight against the
oppression of homosexuals. While this was the first time in history that a film portrayed a gay
character in a non–demeaning way, this would lead to the stereotype of sympathetic gay characters
in film. One film that I would like to note that is a great example from the 90's would be the film
Philadelphia, starring Tom Hanks as a gay AIDS victim that was fired because of his sexuality and
disease. Hollywood targets Hanks' character and makes him into a tragic figure. His character dies
at the end of the film. In an interview with Jan Oxenberg, she points out that even though Tom
Hanks' film was very effective, it is just "a story about a gay hero who dies, who's a tragic figure"
and that it seems as if Hollywood and the film industry will never have a film in which the gay main
character lives to see another day (Epstein). Another more recent film that demonstrates this sort of
sympathetic gay character would be

Analysis Of The Movie Orange Is The New Black
The Netflix original series, Orange Is the New Black takes a "consumerist approach to sexuality," by
repetitively featuring sexual relations among inmates as a way to attract viewers. (Schwan) Orange
Is the New Black neglects to explore emotional attachment beyond a need to fulfill sexual needs and
minimize loneliness while in prison. Bisexual female characters, if given the opportunity, often
leave their female partner for a relationship with a male, downgrading the realism of an actual
bisexual lifestyle. Although lesbian activity is presented throughout, only women with this body
type are presented in a highly sexualized male gaze viewpoint. (TrierBieniek) The sexual relations
presented display an "objectifying, exploitative portrayal of lesbian sexuality." (Schwan) Although,
Orange Is the New Black's cast is exceptionally diverse, the show only films sex scenes between
slender inmates. Ultimately, the show presents LGBTQ characters in a non–threatening light, but
features bisexuality as a temporary sexual encounter of convenience.
Orange Is the New Black's prison setting follows a fictional trend of connecting "female same–sex
desire and mental and criminal pathology." (Filippo) The show's oversexed storyline "reinforces
society's stereotypes and female prisoners: that they are violent, worthless, sex–crazed monsters."
(Cecil) Also, illustrating "bisexuality and other forms of "deviant" female sexuality are likened more
to mental and criminal deviance." (Filippo) The

Lgbt Diversity : The Lgbt Community
In the Introduction to LGBT+ Studies class we discussed many themes of the history of the LGBT+
community, these themes include; oppression, fighting for our visibility and having it delayed, and a
sort of power within the community. The LGBT+ community has gone through an immense amount
of oppression, having to fight its way into the light and having it be pushed aside multiple times. In
a historical context when the LGBT+ community started to show itself so to speak was around the
1920's there were the first gay rights movements starting, and surprisingly it was the start of some
acceptance. However, when World War II began in 1939 it oppressed the movement, as well as
setting it back by gay men being denied from the military because ... Show more content on

I developed knowledge on the first real LGBT+ rights movements in the 1920's, previous to this I
had known nothing other than the recent marriage right movements. The readings helped me to
learn not only about recent events but also about an incredible amount of historical events,
organizations, and fights that made the LGBT+ community what it is today. I also learned that
different types of sources are utilized to gather information, in the ChYOR projects we used many
sources such as; books, oral histories, videos/movies, scholarly articles, and websites. I learned
while writing out my ChYOR assignments that there are an immense amount of sources and if you
use more than one for a project it can give you not only a broader perspective but it can also give
you more knowledge of the event.
There is a difference in the perspectives of a source can make a huge difference on how the
information is given. If an author is not a part of the LGBT+ community the source is lacking a
primary, and emotional side of the work. Sources from an LGBT+ person perspective have an
emotional connection to the LGBT+ community as well sort of insider perspective since a source
outside the LGBT+ community would have information more formally with much less emotion

Homosexuality : Quest For A Utopian World Essay
INTRODUCTION
The proposed research work will be entitled "Homosexuality: Quest for a Utopian World". The
genre of the proposed work will deal in detail with the prevailing issue of homosexuality (both gay
and lesbian) and try to justify their quest for a world where they can live without their integrity
being questioned. The research will cover the history of homosexuality; how it has been seen
through ages and the present scenario.
Setting the background in comparative studies the proposed research work aims at providing a clear
picture of the societal attitudes towards same sex–relationships and how it is varied over time and
space. The work will also look into the psychological aspects of the homosexuals and how a woman
looks for a secure relationship in another woman and what has brought about such notions.
Etymologically, the word homosexual is a hybrid of Greek and Latin words, thus connoting acts of
sexual behavior between members of the same sex. The word 'homosexual' is controversial in itself
as it refers to only one's sexual behavior as opposed to the romantic feelings and thus, people
attribute the term 'gay' and 'lesbian' as appropriate. Homophilia, also means the love and sensibilities
between the same sex people.
Edward Morgan Forster, a renowned English novelist and essayist was a homosexual as known by
his close friends but the public was unaware of this fact and thus, remained a bachelor throughout
his life. He had five novels published in his lifetime

Peace Women Paper
Peace Women I am a strong believer in feminism and lesbian rights. I chose to research five women
from different places across the world who took a stand for lesbian rights. These ladies include:
Zohl de Ishtar (Australia), Haya Shalom (Israel), Izabela Jaruga (Poland), Lo Sai "Rose" Wu (China,
Hong Kong), and Chuen Juei Ho (China, Taiwan). The first peace woman I want to talk about is
Zohl de Ishtar. Zohl is an "Australian lesbian who helps women in Australia on projects in
communities and even world wide" (PeaceWomen Across the Globe). By working on the
international level she is able to work with a diverse number of people. "She has worked to
eliminate nuclear weapons and militarism, campaigned to improve the rights of all peoples,
defended cultural integrity and strived to end any form of discrimination, with an emphasis on
sexuality" (PeaceWomen Across the Globe). Zohl not only wants to help women with a so called
unusual sexual orientation, but also the general public.
The second peace woman I want to talk about is Haya Shalom from Israel. Haya is a feminist
sponsoring human rights as a lesbian. "She is one of the most well–known women supporting
women's unity for peace and women's rights" (PeaceWomen Across the Globe). I respect Shalom for
having such an impact on women's rights while being a lesbian. I cannot see the journey to gain
rights being an easy task for her. I read that Shalom participated

#LoveWins
With the enhancement in technology, it is now accessible to communicate and connect with people
across the world. It is effortless to share information like pictures, advertisements, videos and text
messages all over the world, to whomever you desire. To many people, it is perceived as a form of
entertainment. However, many people do not realize it can also be used as a form of social activism.
Summer Harlow author of "Social media and social movements: Facebook and an online
Guatemalan justice movement that moved offline" argues that social media is very effective to
create social (online) and physical (offline) activism. While Malcolm Gladwell author of "Small
Change: Why the Revolution Will Not Be Tweeted" identifies that internet activism is an instant
frenzy that creates a brief impact but is not adequate enough to remain on its own. When media is
used as an intellectual resource for activism it can expose people 's conscious about diverse
predicaments or movements occurring around the globe. In today 's contemporary society people
had the power to create a significant change in the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender (LGBT)
community by having same sex marriage legalized in all 50 states. The hashtag #LoveWins became
possible in the United States by social and physical activism which included engagement with social
networks.

Robert Lorway 's Defiant Desire

"Defiant Desire in Namibia" Robert Lorway delivers a feminist perspective with his ethnography,
"Defiant Desire in Namibia". Lorway examines sexuality as both a social construct and a political
one. While this ethnography provides unparalleled information about gender and sexuality in the
poorer world, there are a few important flaws, such as the lack of information about radical ideas or
behavior, neglect of his own bias, and the length of the ethnography.

In this ethnography, Lorway analyzes female sexual desire and the challenges these women face. He
discusses problems with their president, their families, their employment and the aggression against
them. Many of these women reported being stabbed multiple times by both women and men. They
also claimed that it is not uncommon for women to be raped in Namibia, and being lesbians give
them a better sense of security. HIV is extremely prevent in Namibian society, and some of these
women even report a fear of sleeping with men for this reason. Lorway arrived in Namibia in 2001,
shortly after their president announced that all LGBT peoples would be thrown in prison. One

these lesbians would become prostitutes as well, despite the fact that they were not sexually

The Sociological Imagination And Common Sense
The Sociological Imagination was a term that was first coined by sociologist C. Wright Mills. It
could be said that definition of The Sociological Imagination is having the ability to look beyond
personal experience and realise that society is shaped by the cross over between biography and
history. Mills thought that everyone in society had the capability to think sociologically and that this
was essential to gain a deeper understanding of both their society, and their current circumstance.
This approach contradicts a more readily adopted approach by the public that sociologists call "The
common sense approach". The common sense approach is a collection of knowledge that has been
acquired through little scientific merit, such as: personal experience, gossip or anecdotal evidence.
This essay will discuss and explain the difference between the Sociological Imagination and
Common–Sense explanations through the use of examples to explain the topic of sexuality.
Sexuality is an issue that has been widely discussed and has often been misunderstood by society. It
has often been a misconception by members of the heterosexual community that all lesbians want to
be men. Through applying common sense, it can be understood why people may think gay women
want to be men when looking in on the lesbian community, some lesbians prefer to express
themselves and their sexuality through the way they dress and act; their short hair, masculine
clothing, wearing no make–up and their macho

Because the novel presents a portrayal of lesbianism that is far removed from current gay culture, it
is not truly contemporary to the audience for which it was intended. To include it in such a
curriculum would be an insult to the lesbian community of today.
When first introduced, Rubyfruit Jungle was a tremendous commercial success. Hailed by many as
the ultimate lesbian novel of its time, it took a bold and bawdy look at the lesbian experience in
America. The storyline moved quickly, tracing the experiences of Molly Bolt, a young southern girl
who had been adopted by a severe, conservative mother and her more liberal husband. Brown's
novel set a tone that was direct and controversial, and employed language that had never before
been used in connection with the lesbian experience (Pela 2). The novel is uniquely American, as it
traces Molly's young life from her earliest years in York, Pennsylvania, through a move to a small
southern town in Georgia, and finally to the city of New York, where Molly feels as though she
belongs. In each setting, Brown forcefully exhibits her craft by capturing not just the dialogue, but
the mannerisms, biases, and cultural peculiarities of each locale. Molly's reactions to each move in
her life reveal much, not just about her character and motivations, but about life in the latter half of
the twentieth century. America began a shift toward a period of inclusion and acceptance of
minorities and other subcultures in the 1960's

Should Gay Marriage Be Legalized In Australia Essay
Imagine if your love was a crime. Imagine if the world frowned upon it; deemed it illegal. We live
in a land of equality; is letting heterosexual couples but not homosexual couples get married equal?
Criminalizing gay marriage is a form of discrimination. Homosexual couples have just as much of a
right to pledge their love as straight couples do. Gay marriage should be legalized in Australia, and
there are several strong reasons why this has to occur.
It will foster acceptance of gay couples and individuals, as well as completely eliminating the
negative impact marriage inequality has on the health and wellbeing of same–sex attracted people,
and increase the amount of children successfully adopted.
Legalizing gay marriage will change the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
72% of Australians believe that same sex couples should be allowed to marry and 80% of Australian
same–sex couples would marry if they had the choice. When the evidence and statistics speak this
clearly, what reason could there possibly be to criminalize homosexuality and the union of a couple?
There are no downsides, only benefits and equal opportunity.
Another reason gay marriage should be legalized in Australia is because it supports the
psychological, physical, and social wellbeing amongst homosexuals. Studies have found that people
who identify as homosexual face up to twice as much abuse (including physical, mental, sexual or
emotional) than their heterosexual counterparts. This prejudice and discrimination adds to
biological, social, environmental and psychological factors which can lead to depression and
anxiety.

I believe that Sylvia Rivera is one of the three most important LGBTQ+ figures in America since

activism called out the conservative and exclusionary politics of LGBT rights groups in the 1970s,
and the erasure of transgender women and drag queens from larger movements despite their
significance to those groups. Much of Rivera's activism focused on the inclusion and protection of
transgender people, and that legacy continues today. For example, the Sylvia Rivera Law Project, an
organization that provides legal help to non–cisgender people of color, is named in her honor and
fights for many of the same causes that Sylvia herself did. Sylvia, along with her friend and fellow
activist Marsha P. Johnson, formed the organization Street Transvestite Action Revolutionaries
(STAR) in the 1970s, to advocate for and house homeless drag queens in New York City. Although
STAR was not a particularly long–lasting organization, Sylvia's work through STAR and the
Metropolitan Community Church of New York left their mark, and the Metropolitan Community
Church of New York's shelter for LGBT youth is named after Sylvia. Because of her impact upon
the LGBT community during and after the 1970s, I think that Sylvia Rivera would be an excellent
choice for one of the three most important LGBTQ+ figures since 1970. A second person who I
think is one of the three most important LGBTQ+ activists

Homosexual Mothers: The Demonization Of Lesbian Parenting
Harnessing the momentum from the civil rights movement, activism for lesbian parents ignited in
the 1970s. Many hard fought custody and legal battles mark this period. During this time, the
primary aim of the research was to augment legal arguments in establishing their suitability to
parent by likening them with nuclear, heterosexual families (Patterson 2005). Most of the current
literature on lesbian parenting continues to fall under this category. Focusing on psychological
outcomes, this research examines children born within a previous heterosexual relationship (see, for
example, Victor and Fish 1995; Parks 1998). In Canada, courts discerned a 'good' and 'bad' lesbian
mother; a 'good' lesbian mother was markedly invisible, unpolitical, ... Show more content on

Family building and conception became greatly medicalized and premised on market culture
(Epstein 2012). In part, this constructs an entry point for gays and lesbians to enter the "voting bloc
and market niche," by erasing their differences to blend into the mainstream (Gross 2011, xvi).
Determined by power, social systems are a mechanism through which politics and economy
disperse power, to the dominant groups (Foucault 2001). In this case, the dominant group is
acceptance of the power is the heterosexual nuclear family. In this way, medical models of
conception and family building promote the dominance of heterosexual nuclear family discourses
and what is a valid 'family' in society (Brown 2003; Newnham 2010). Compulsory heterosexuality
assumes a naturalness to heterosexuality, an ideology presented and critiqued by Adrienne Rich in
her essay "Compulsory Heterosexuality and Lesbian Existence" (1980). Unable to exist under the
imperative of heterosexuality, Butler (1996) found that gendered sexuality is a performative
construction of the self. Adding to this notion, further feminist interpretations argue that lesbian
identities subvert dominant gender norms (see, for example, Case 1989; de Lauretis 1994;

In an article entitled Sandra Lawson, black lesbian vegan rabbinical student, hopes to refine where
Judaism happens, we are introduced to a nontraditional Jewish person who preaches in a
nontraditional manner. For Lawson, a neighborhood bar is a perfect location to perform a Jewish
service or pray for those in need. In addition to breaking down many barriers such as being a black,
lesbian, and a future rabbi, Lawson stated she is "eager to take Jewish practice outside the
traditional bounds of the synagogue".

Ellen Degeneres : A Powerful Figure That Has Changed Society
Imagine you are a normal kid attending local high school. You get good grades and have loving
friends around you. Now, imagine someone at school is bullying you for your sexuality. Imagine
them tormenting, torturing, and talking down to you every day because you are "different." This is
what Ellen DeGeneres had to live through during her life as she blossomed into an adult. Ellen
would constantly live in fear of being bullied for her sexual orientation but throughout growing up
she learned to stand for what she believes in and tried to fill humanity with as much kindness as she
could hold, just like she continually does today. Ellen DeGeneres is a powerful figure that has
prominently benefited modern society by supporting LBGT rights and equality, becoming an
advocate of many charities and associations, and utilizing her talk show and fame to benefit
numerous causes. Ellen DeGeneres is a humorous and influential individual who wants to be known
for her friendly personality and her brutally honest mindset to her adoring fans. Ellen DeGeneres
first explains, "The most important thing for me to know is that I represent kindness." This
statement is true because she is always willing to help those in need when individuals are in dire
situations and spread joy just by giving a friendly smile. DeGeneres believes that there needs to be
more love in the world. She wants there to be more kindness, more compassion, more joy and
laughter in society and with the kindness she

Lesbian Identity Politics and Associated Organizations Essay
Identity politics were a major part of social reform in the Sixties and Seventies. Yet, the advent of
identity politic reform originates in the Fifties, a decade that saw the African–American Civil Rights
Movement start to gain momentum. On the heels of the Civil Rights movement, we also see the
Women's Liberation Movement begin to gain steam, shortly thereafter followed by the Gay
Liberation Movement. And as an offshoot of these reform movements, we observe the dawn of
lesbian identity politics – a movement very much its own amongst its predecessors. One sect would
come to be coined the "lavender menace" of feminism – a group of mostly Caucasian lesbians –
followed later by the black lesbian feminist group, The Combahee River Collective. ... Show more

After delivering the food, and being understandably annoyed with the task, she was belittled by a
male protestor who would have her as a sexual reward for sitting–in. Black feminists, such as those
in the Combahee River Collective, experienced very similar discrimination in Civil Rights
campaigns, especially groups like the Black Panthers. Just like Jay, many African–American women
were used as sexual remuneration to men who did good work within their organizations. This
patriarchy, antithetic to the goals of feminism, was the undoubted enemy of both these lesbian
organizations – usurping it became one clear goal. The Combahee River Collective, though, did not
feel separate from African–American men concerning race, yet, felt doubly oppressed by white
patriarchy. Understanding that they connected with black men racially, yet struggled with them
sexually, almost supplements the idea that white men – who controlled government and economy –
were the ultimate oppressor. They did not feel they were separate, but rather, just opposed to black
men along patriarchal lines. Inversely, the Collective connected with white lesbians against
patriarchy, but were subjected to hierarchy within feminism as well as lesbianism. Secondly, we see
that if well known reformists were not male, they were heterosexual, the epitome being Betty
Friedan. This was the reason for the more specific goal of the two groups: battling hierarchy in

Imposing Our Own Ideological Frameworks onto Virginia Woolf and Her Writing
Whenever we try to imagine the feelings or motives of a writer, we impose our own thoughts and
ideas, our own biases, onto that person and their work. Perhaps in order to justify our choices or
legitimate the philosophies that we hold dear, we interpret texts so that they fall into place in our
own ideological frameworks. Literature, because it engages with the most important and passionate
questions in life, evokes responses in readers that emanate not only from the mind but also from the
subconscious and from the deepest places in the heart. Writers like Virginia Woolf ask, and
sometimes answer, questions about life's meaning, about the nature and ... Show more content on

Much critical writing on Woolf reflects a strong desire to locate her definitely within either a
heterosexual or homosexual framework. These interpretations of Woolf's sexuality, in her life and
her writings, are varied and reflect anxieties within the culture about the role of women, the nature
of sexual identity, and the fear society has of people who do not conform to traditional heterosexual
or homosexual models.
While critical views are many and varied, it is possible to loosely identify two groups at opposite
poles in this debate. Some conservative male critics are invested in re–creating a Woolf who was a
devoted wife and daughter, someone who enjoyed close friendships with women but someone who
respected the primacy of heterosexual norms. They largely ignore the potential homosexual
interpretations of Woolf's work and brush aside her relationship with Vita Sackville–West because
acknowledging those things in any real way would threaten the established patriarchal order. Nigel
Nicolson, in his book Portrait of a Marriage , characterizes the physical relationship between Vita
and Virginia as "tentative and not very successful" and claims, "It is a travesty of their relationship
to call it an affair" (207). There are several problems with this

The 's Reflection Of The Ancient Women
Queering Vivien's poem entails finding the elements of imitation, anonymity, and/or appropriation.
Two of these elements, anonymity and imitation are clear in Vivien's reflection of the ancient
women on Lesbos in herself. Imitation provides Vivien with a means of growing in sexuality, a
gaining of knowledge of the women of Lesbos's ways. The ancient Lesbians work as a template, but
suddenly become the same as the lesbians of Vivien's time referred to as "our" (18). The result of
imitation is growing nearer toward the likeness of the ancient Lesbians. Vivien's body
metaphorically becomes "a reflecting mirror," taking up all aspects of the ancient Lesbians. Vivien
and her lesbians go beyond queer imitation to a new form, the same form as the ancient Lesbians.
Vivien's group cannot be distinguished from the ancient Lesbians, since they all mirror one another.
Imitation renders Vivien's bodies queer and identical.
There is no singular body at any point only but "our" bodies. Anonymity then is also relevant to
Vivien's poem. One cannot differentiate between the present "our" bodies and ancient "their" bodies
either. No difference exists between them, as they are mirror images of each other. The bodies in the
poem are queer as they are both anonymous and imitated, yet simultaneously the bodies transcend
time. Bridging a long period of time (ancient Greece to 19th centure Britain) means Vivien does not
have a full picture of how these women of Lesbos lived. Imitating the past

The Rights Of Ruth Simpson And Gay Rights
Ruth Simpson (1926 – 2008) Run through plagiarism check Politics isn't just about who gets to
conquer countries, fight wars or make laws in government. It's also about the slow grind and
struggle of those who work behind the scenes to make things happen. Nobody exemplifies this more
than Ruth Simpson, a gay rights activist who toiled for decades to raise awareness of LGBTQ rights
in the US. In 1976, when Ruth wrote her pioneering book on lesbian identity, From the Closet to the
Courts, gay men and women could be fired from their jobs, targeted by police, or harassed on the
street with full impunity. The majority of US states even legally barred gay people from certain jobs,
including those in teaching, policing, law and medicine–even dentistry. If anything is testament to
the work that LGBTQ activists like Ruth have done, it is that such measures seem ludicrous and
unthinkable today. But the world that Ruth operated in was a vastly different one. Born to two
committed socialists deeply involved in the labor movement, Ruth was exposed to activism at an
early age. By the time she was 12, her parents were taking her to picket lines, where she witnessed
her father beaten up by a cop right in front of her. The result, however, was that Ruth disavowed
politics–she had seen the heartbreak and anxiety that her parents' activism had brought about.
Instead, she studied drama and English at university and moved to New York to pursue a brief
career on Broadway. But she found that she

Homophobia In Sappho's Ode To Jealousy
Social constructs of older eras are based on the notion that a woman is always in debt to a man; a
women without a man is deemed unsuccessful. The only only admissible relationships are between a
man and woman. Sappho's "Ode to Jealousy" challenges homophobia by relying on the readers
knowledge of social norms within the era the poem was written. Greek society's lack of acceptance
toward female homosexuality greatly determines the willingness of women to outwardly admit to
their sexualities. The poem hints at the present homophobia by society instilling the fear of coming
out in the speaker. The speaker also implies that her jealousy is for a culture that would accept her
homosexuality. The envy of the ability to be outward with emotions is shown in the inhibition of the
speaker's physicality toward a women she loves. When it comes to the women she desires, she feels
"a step from death" (Sappho, l.15), however it is not the women specifically that is killing her; it is
the social constructs of her era that will not allow them to be together. Against general assumptions,
ancient Greece historian Hein van Dolen (2017) believed ancient Greece did have a homosexual
allowance. When a man was to be with a younger boy, the relationship is acceptable. At this time in
Greece, a socially acceptable relationship required an active partner and a passive partner. Men were
classified as active partners whereas women and children were categorized under being passive
partners. A

Analysis Of ' Pariah, Directed And Written By Dee Rees Essay
LGBT is an initialism that stands for lesbian, gay, bi–sexual, and transgender. It is intended to
highlight a diversity of sexuality and gender identity–based cultures. Historically, LGBT people
have had to deal with being brutalised and misunderstood because of the misconception that being
gay is different and deserves different treatment. However, there are efforts being made daily by the
community in order to educate people and ease their fears. The purpose of the following analysis is
to deconstruct how people who fought back while growing up realizing they are apart of community
help shaped and/or will shape them to become strong roles for LGBT people around the world.
In this paper, I will examine how women of color who deal with the lack of acceptance growing up
because of their lesbianism help shape and/or will shape them to be future role models for LGBT
people around the world. I will be using the coming of age drama, Pariah, directed and written by
Dee Rees, as a primary source in order to argue how the cinematography in this film portrays Alike
being the epitome of embracing one 's sexuality. I chose this film because it reminded me of a
similar story that touched me in the form of a book written by Audre Lorde called Zami: A New
Spelling of My Name. Standing up in what Alike believed in and taking a stand by fighting back
against so many in the community deal with on a everyday basis is the driving force I will use to

The Issue of Gay Marriages
Gay marriage has come to be a pressing topic in the contemporary society as more and more
individuals get actively involved in discussing it. Individuals who oppose same–sex marriage are
typically inclined to bring on a deontological argument or to say that legalizing the act might bring
on other issues. In contrast, people who support gay marriages focus on matters related to human
rights and justice. The arguments generated by each of the sides are certainly thought–provoking
and it is very difficult for someone to get involved in the debate and actually pick a side concerning
the matter.
Deontologists lobby with regard to how gay marriages are against most values that society is
currently interested in promoting. Christian deontologists are particularly concerned about the issue
of legalizing gay marriages as they believe that this would be in disagreement with basic laws in
their religion. From their perspective, a relationship needs to be natural and needs to occur between
a man and a woman. This position is called physicalism and it involves individuals fighting with the
purpose of preserving and promoting natural behavior as seen from a biological point of view.
People are used to having a strict understanding of laws and society is largely based on a series of
legislations that keeps its members from getting actively involved in activities that would be
considered wrong from a social perspective. The argument for same–sex marriage is often regarded

The Five Major Aspects Of The Life Course Theory
The life course perspective, or life course theory, is an approach that includes the mental, physical,
and social heath of individuals to determine the affect they have on the experiences of the individual
throughout their life course. Life course theory focuses directly on the impact of historical and
socioeconomic contexts which can alter how individuals from various cohorts experience the world
during their life course. A fundamental assumption of the life course theory is that lives of the
individuals are lived in a reasonably ordered manner in patterns shaped by age, social structures,
and historical change. The life course theory has five distinct principle which are time and place,
life–span development, timing, agency, and linked lives (Black, 2008). These distinct principles are
important to the life course theory because individually they influence the ways in which one
perceives the events in their life. Time and place are important because a person's life is shaped by
the question of when and where. Life–span development is a distinct principle because the way in
each one develops biologically, socially, and psychologically goes beyond childhood to later
influence the new situations of adulthood. Since life events do not have a set time in which they
need to be completed, timing refers to certain biological events, such as child bearing, that take
place during a predetermined time frame and when experienced outside of the time frame can have
various social and

I strongly agree with the legalization of the gay marriages in many of the societies even though it is
a subject that elicits mixed reactions and opposition from some quarters. The utilitarianism approach
that seeks to establish whether the end justifies the means can be applied whereby the benefits of
such legalization and the disadvantages are compared. When gay marriages are legalized, the
beneficiaries will include the gays, adopted children and the society as a whole. Opponents such
include religion, which argues that marriage is a sacred institution to be shared between a man and
woman and that marriage, should serve a higher purpose of reproduction. However, the opponents
would not suffer in effect since they only claim

An Examination of Rubyfruit Jungle and Her Critics Essay
An Examination of Rubyfruit Jungle and Her Critics
Rita Mae Brown's first novel, Rubyfruit Jungle made waves when it was first released in 1973. Its
influence has not gone away over the years and is in its seventh printing. While mainstream critics
failed to acknowledge Rubyfruit Jungle in their papers, magazines and discussions on contemporary
literature, there are plenty of non–mainstream voices to fill the void. While these lesser–known
sources are not always credible, and certainly not always accurate they have created a word–of–
mouth reputation of the novel and have facilitated its continuous success.
The problem in researching such a novel is that there is very little criticism. One cannot rely on

Molly Bolt is amoral and narcissistic. While she breaks the stereotypes of lesbians, she doesn't do
much to draw favor to them, or to show them in a realistic, positive light.
Rubyfruit Jungle may have been one of the first novels that featured a lesbian heroine, which might
have drawn tons of press and criticism, but perhaps because it was still a negative image of
homosexuality brought forth in a new light, it was not the time to jump on it as the winning novel
some book reviews have coined it.
Molly Bolt was the only character in the novel to show courage, but she did not show morals, values
or strength of character. Her early sexual encounters appeared to be nothing more than childhood
stupidity, but Molly never grew out of it. By the end of the book, she still had never had a loving
relationship with a woman, and vowed never to settle down with one. At one point she was having
an affair with a married woman and her seventeen year old daughter, simply because they were
sexually attractive. This shows a great lack of concern for others as well as no disregard for
consequences. Without strength of character, Molly Bolt while strong and independent is not the
ideal spokesperson for being a lesbian, which might be part of the void of discussion in acedamia
regarding the novel.
Rita Mae Brown offers a fresh style, wit, humor and enjoyable characters, but after

Living As A Lesbian, And August Jordan 's A New Politics...
The articles that stood out the most to me were Cheryl Clarke's "Living As a Lesbian" and June
Jordan's "A New Politics of Sexuality". These articles stood out, because while given a similar topic
(lesbians) they both possessed very different, yet similar arguments. I found this interesting because
it is a prime example of societies different views on controversial topics. Cheryl and June's articles
contain many differences, similarities and information to be reflected on.
Cheryl's main arguments are that everyone who loves women (whether its romantically, sexually,
platonically, etc.) is a feminist and lesbians are all part of a rebellion. She states, "No matter how a
woman lives out her lesbianism–––she has rebelled against becoming the slave master's concubine,
viz., the male–dependent female, the female heterosexual." This gives evidence towards her
argument that lesbians, regardless their intentions are resisting from the constructs that society
wants them to adhere to. June would disagree with this statement, arguing that lesbians aren't solely
out to rebel but are just pursuing their lives freely. Cheryl also points out that there is no one sort of
lesbian and that whether you consider yourself a "full blown lesbian" or "bisexual" it doesn't change
the fact that you are resisting against the heterosexual society. This being true, Cheryl Clarke also
disagrees with the idea of bisexuality; whereas June Jordan identifies as bisexual. Following along
with this Cheryl

How heteronormativity and media stereotypes influences how queer people express their sexualities

"Who is the man in the relationship?" "Who tops or bottoms?" These questions have become a
fundamental part in queer people's lives. Why do non queer people need for queer people and their

In media, queer men and women are almost always portrayed in stereotypical roles, and bisexuality
is almost always expressed as a phase or not real. These ideas affect how others view queer
identities and how queer people view their own identity, and the social norms around them. Men are
commonly described as "feminine" whilst women are portrayed as "masculine" (Tara Sarper, 2013).
How did these widespread ideas come to exist and how do they continue to affect members of the
community? These stereotypes can be harmful as they build a picture of what it means to be a
certain sexuality, as well as the heteronormativity behind the stereotype. We often see queer people
in relationships being asked who's the dominant one, the man in the relationship, the top, etc. These
ideas come from a heteronormative society that puts harmful misogynistic norms even in
relationships where women might not be present. Where does the overwhelming pressure for there
to be a "man" or "top" in the relationship come from, and why are those two associated with each
other? Since same sex relationships go against the norm in society, society still puts pressure on
heternormative ideas to be present in them. If two men decide they want to be exclusively a bottom
or top, dominant or submissive, in either their sexual relationship or in their general dynamic, that is
their choice and right to do so. However, a social constructionist would say

Gay Rights Research Paper

  • 1. Gay Rights Research Paper Gay Rights Movement "The sign of a beautiful person is that they always see beauty in others" The gay rights movement started to advocate homosexual men and women's rights and give them equality as well. This movement has been going on for such a long time till this current year it's become a big topic to society. In the late 1800's to the mid 1900's gay rights became a political debate. For many years people always were different and had different views in life. However people were always afraid to be truthful about their rights as a person. In 1807 a man named oscar created a poem called "Two loves". The poem became viral and popular but this changed everything. The poem symbolized true love between two poople of the same sex. This poem was dedicated to his lover. After a couple of months oscar's lover decided to aknowledge their opinion on same sex relationships.over time this escalated and started to become a big movement. The scientific humanity comittee started advocating a movement known as "gay rights" so the people have a voice. Berlin, austrilia, north america, and other larger countries like the U.S started voicing their opinion on the LGBT community and their rights.the movement started with a petition to call for the ... Everyone has a right to being with anyone they are attracted to, marring anyone they love. It was not until the rise of Christianity that a negative attitude towards same–sex marriage became introduced. They believed marriage was based on procreation. any relationship that was non–procreative started to increase in many societies causing more debatable ... • 2. Ellen Degeneres Research Paper Ellen DeGeneres is regarded as one of the greatest female television personalities of all times. She is an award winning host of a highly rated daytime talk television program and a comedian. She is well known to the contemporary generation as the endearing and 'sweet' voice of the Dory in Finding Nemo. Her role in the animation brought out her natural comic style. DeGeneres is a not a new household name in the spheres of American entertainment. During the mid–90s, she starred in the highly rated show called 'Ellen'. In the late 1990s, she came out of the closet and announced that she was gay. Since then, she has been at the forefront in advocating for the rights of the LGBT group. In 2008, she married her longtime girlfriend Portia de Rossi ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... She is regarded as an idol among young actresses and actors who are also members of the LGBT. Her announcement generated a huge media storm in Canada, Europe and America. Some of her fans wrote supportive emails and letters in solidarity with her sexuality choice. Ellen DeGeneres regards 1997–98 as the lowest point in her career. Reviews and ratings of her show took a nose dive because her sexuality was the epic center of the subsequent episodes. At some point, a subsidiary of ABC in Birmingham declined to air the episode when she declared her sexual orientation. Some of the corporations withdrew their sponsorships of her show for fear of being linked to her controversy. Ellen DeGeneres changed America's television industry by coming out as gay (Tauber & Jordan, 2003). She managed to convince the American society that entertainers too should have freedom to choose their preferred sexual orientation. Most scholars agree that Ellen DeGeneres created precedence as the first lead actress to announce that she is a member of LGBT on national television. Soon after her announcement it became a norm for actress, singers, comedians, and actors to come out of the closet despite the fact that most Americans marginalize members of LGBT. Most advertisers in her show cancelled their commitment contracts for fear of offending Americans. The show was later cancelled due to heavy criticism from viewers ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. The Social Consequences Of Heteronormativity As children, we are indoctrinated into the social construct of heteronormativity. Based on our biological sex at birth, we are given blue or pink clothes, play princesses or superheroes, and are told either, "cross your legs and sit like a lady" or "act like a man and stop crying". As adults, we watch movies and TV shows where the husband comes home from a long day at work to greet his wife who has just finished making dinner. Heteronormativity refers to those norms related to gender and sexuality which keep in place patriarchy and compulsory heterosexuality as well as other systems and ideologies related to power (Sharma 2009). Gay, lesbian, queer, homosexual, agender, androgynous, bigender, bisexual, butch, femme, dyke, stud, lipstick lesbian, gender fluid; There are a seemingly endless terministic screens used to label women who love women, but they all come down to one meaning, we aren't normal. "Even if any given terminology is a reflection of reality, by its very nature as a terminology it is a selection of reality; and to this extent it must also function as a deflection of reality" (Burke 1968). Viewing lesbians through heteronormative gender roles oversimplifies complex identities into false dichotomies. When I was around five years–old my step–sister, Kelly, came to live with us. I thought that she was the coolest person that I had ever met. It was 1990 and she was around 25, drove a lifted jeep, had a short haircut, and wore baggy jeans and Timberland boots in ... • 4. Women During The World War The 1950s is an era remembered for the Cold War, communism, and June Cleaver. Most historians, if asked about this period, will mention the 'Red Scare' and the fight to stop the pervasive reach of communism in post–war America. Most feminists will recall the iconic image of June Cleaver and the detrimental effect this perfect housewife had on the women's movement after the massive employment of women during the Second World War. Often forgotten and missing from the pages of history are the millions of women who were ostracized and subjected to discrimination based upon their sexuality. These women lost federal jobs, their military careers came to a halt, and, in some cases, were blacklisted from applying for civilian jobs. Not only were these women forced to overcome gender inequality in order to support themselves in the workforce, they were also ostracized by society and endured unending discrimination from the government and police on the basis of their sexuality. In the face of this tremendous cultural pressure these women carved their own communities and lives out on the edges of the social order. The pervasive fear of homosexuals in the 1950s bred an era of anti–gay legislation that greatly contributed to the horrific discrimination against lesbians and the development of a lesbian subculture. This fear, known as the Lavender Scare, led to a severe climate of oppression for the emerging lesbian subculture following the Second World War. As a result of medical ... • 5. Gay Marriage Thesis Gay marriage is a very controversial issue that has emerged in our society. Depending on your upbringing and your mentality, individuals have formed their own personal opinions and have taken sides, either to support or to oppose the issue. Gay marriage throughout the years has sparked so much controversy that it was brought to the United States Supreme Court, which is known to be the highest court of all the land. It is up to the justices of the court to determine how states and society view and treat gay marriage. Whether it being legalized throughout the country or only in certain states, it is, now legalized and recognized as a legitimate marriage in certain state. However, although it is recognized and states legalized gay marriage, the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... After hearing the case three issues that were needed to be addressed was if same–sex marriage a right for individuals to marry in each state, does the states have to grant marriage licenses to same– sex couples, and lastly must states recognize same–sex marriage licenses in other jurisdictions? The courts concluded and favored the plaintiffs, the ruling of the case was 5–4 and the majority opinion was written by Justice Kennedy. Basically the judges in the majority believe that the fourteenth amendment is responsible and is required to allow same–sex marriages have the right to marry in all states that states must issue marriage licenses to those of same–sex, and lastly the license must be recognized throughout all states. As you see an example of the some of the justices siding with the plaintiffs, however there is another side that opposes the legalization of gay marriage. • 6. The Importance Of Divorce In Arizona The law is riddled with perplexities and seemingly complicated ideas worded in ways that seem purposefully difficult to understand. But when it comes to divorce in Arizona there are a few divorce statutes that you don't need to worry about – the ones that talk about "grounds for divorce in Arizona." Why is that? Every state set its own divorce laws and divorce statutes. For instance, in Arizona, you can file for divorce as long as one spouse has lived in Arizona for a minimum of 90 days. Additionally, Arizona is what is called a no fault state. That means that either spouse can assert the marriage to be irretrievably broken without either one of them being required to provide a reason for the divorce. In other states, one spouse must request ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 7. Sexuality Is A Very Prominent Theme Throughout Rubyfruit... Sexuality is a very prominent theme throughout Rubyfruit Jungle. Molly faces the assumption from the world around her that she is heterosexual because she does not seem to fit into the stereotypical clichés of a Lesbian. As a child, after she, Ted, and Leroy found out Jenna was dying, Molly wanted to stay in Leroy's room to comfort him, "but people said it wasn't right..." (Brown). After Jenna died, Leroy cried and yelled about how unfair it was. Carrie comforted him the best she could, but still did not let Molly stay with him (Brown). Molly witnesses Carl comforting Ep, and narrates that she, "...thought the only things [men] were allowed to do was shake hands or fight. But...maybe it wasn't against the rules. Since I wasn't sure, I thought I'd...never tell. I was glad they could touch each other. Maybe all men did that after everyone went to bed so no one would know the toughness was for show. Or maybe...only...when someone died." (Brown). As a punishment for Molly's unladylike behavior, Carrie tells Molly about her plan to keep her inside during the summer to train her as a lady, and Leroy tried to stay as well. He argued with Carrie, however he obeyed, out of fear, when Carrie told him, "You're a boy and you go out and play like boys are supposed to do. It's not right for you to learn those things" (Brown). He backed down when, "...she started telling him what would happen to him if he picked up women's ways... Everyone would point and laugh. Nobody would play with him...and soon ... • 8. The 's Comic Books Have Recently Become A Way Of... Comic books have recently become a way of representing and expressing ideas on human sexuality. Politically InQueerect #2 by Dylan Edwards and Liliane and Muesli in Beyond Shades of Queer by Leanne Franson both tell a story with non–heterosexual characters to portray different views on sexuality. Franson's comic contains many humorous panels that involve a cat or a dog interacting with a human being. She is concerned with the categorization of human sexuality based on sexual behavior and orientation. On the other hand, Edward's comic has different characters that interact in a friendly and entertaining way. He creates a story to voice his concerns about the political issues and experiences that homosexuals have. Nevertheless, rather than writing a polemic or an op–ed, both authors use the comic book medium to convey their opinions about the experiences that the gay community has and the issues it faces. Representing non–normative sexuality in such a manner makes it easier for one to examine these issues from a different perspective and to agree with the beliefs of both authors. Leanne Franson's comic book is about the sexual labels that people use to identify abnormal sexual behaviors and sexual orientations. Franson takes this idea of labeling people's sexuality and trivializes it as something that is unnecessary in our society by using dogs as an example. In doing so, she identifies a parallel between the worlds of human beings and dogs in her comic book and she ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 9. The Stereotypes Of Homosexuality In Film While many believe that homosexuality has only been seen in mainstream media for only a few decades, it has actually been with America cinema since the early 1920's. The portrayal of homosexuality in film and TV has come a very long way since the 1920's. What viewers see on TV about homosexuality is really just a representation of America's changing public view on the subject. While we have come to accept the topic of homosexuality in American society more willingly, we have substituted much of our prejudice about gays with the stereotypes that we see on TV constantly. Because as a society we are constantly forced to see these stereotypes, we are being halted in our progression to accept all different kinds of lifestyles. When film was ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In the early fifties, lesbians were also being attacked by the film industry, portraying them as bulldykes and troublesome neurotics. While the Hollywood was struggling to make topic of homosexuality in films more suitable for audiences, the film Victim made its debut in the United Kingdom. This was the first film to star a homosexual character that stands up to fight against the oppression of homosexuals. While this was the first time in history that a film portrayed a gay character in a non–demeaning way, this would lead to the stereotype of sympathetic gay characters in film. One film that I would like to note that is a great example from the 90's would be the film Philadelphia, starring Tom Hanks as a gay AIDS victim that was fired because of his sexuality and disease. Hollywood targets Hanks' character and makes him into a tragic figure. His character dies at the end of the film. In an interview with Jan Oxenberg, she points out that even though Tom Hanks' film was very effective, it is just "a story about a gay hero who dies, who's a tragic figure" and that it seems as if Hollywood and the film industry will never have a film in which the gay main character lives to see another day (Epstein). Another more recent film that demonstrates this sort of sympathetic gay character would be ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 10. Analysis Of The Movie Orange Is The New Black The Netflix original series, Orange Is the New Black takes a "consumerist approach to sexuality," by repetitively featuring sexual relations among inmates as a way to attract viewers. (Schwan) Orange Is the New Black neglects to explore emotional attachment beyond a need to fulfill sexual needs and minimize loneliness while in prison. Bisexual female characters, if given the opportunity, often leave their female partner for a relationship with a male, downgrading the realism of an actual bisexual lifestyle. Although lesbian activity is presented throughout, only women with this body type are presented in a highly sexualized male gaze viewpoint. (TrierBieniek) The sexual relations presented display an "objectifying, exploitative portrayal of lesbian sexuality." (Schwan) Although, Orange Is the New Black's cast is exceptionally diverse, the show only films sex scenes between slender inmates. Ultimately, the show presents LGBTQ characters in a non–threatening light, but features bisexuality as a temporary sexual encounter of convenience. Orange Is the New Black's prison setting follows a fictional trend of connecting "female same–sex desire and mental and criminal pathology." (Filippo) The show's oversexed storyline "reinforces society's stereotypes and female prisoners: that they are violent, worthless, sex–crazed monsters." (Cecil) Also, illustrating "bisexuality and other forms of "deviant" female sexuality are likened more to mental and criminal deviance." (Filippo) The ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 11. Lgbt Diversity : The Lgbt Community In the Introduction to LGBT+ Studies class we discussed many themes of the history of the LGBT+ community, these themes include; oppression, fighting for our visibility and having it delayed, and a sort of power within the community. The LGBT+ community has gone through an immense amount of oppression, having to fight its way into the light and having it be pushed aside multiple times. In a historical context when the LGBT+ community started to show itself so to speak was around the 1920's there were the first gay rights movements starting, and surprisingly it was the start of some acceptance. However, when World War II began in 1939 it oppressed the movement, as well as setting it back by gay men being denied from the military because ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... I developed knowledge on the first real LGBT+ rights movements in the 1920's, previous to this I had known nothing other than the recent marriage right movements. The readings helped me to learn not only about recent events but also about an incredible amount of historical events, organizations, and fights that made the LGBT+ community what it is today. I also learned that different types of sources are utilized to gather information, in the ChYOR projects we used many sources such as; books, oral histories, videos/movies, scholarly articles, and websites. I learned while writing out my ChYOR assignments that there are an immense amount of sources and if you use more than one for a project it can give you not only a broader perspective but it can also give you more knowledge of the event. There is a difference in the perspectives of a source can make a huge difference on how the information is given. If an author is not a part of the LGBT+ community the source is lacking a primary, and emotional side of the work. Sources from an LGBT+ person perspective have an emotional connection to the LGBT+ community as well sort of insider perspective since a source outside the LGBT+ community would have information more formally with much less emotion attached. • 12. Homosexuality : Quest For A Utopian World Essay INTRODUCTION The proposed research work will be entitled "Homosexuality: Quest for a Utopian World". The genre of the proposed work will deal in detail with the prevailing issue of homosexuality (both gay and lesbian) and try to justify their quest for a world where they can live without their integrity being questioned. The research will cover the history of homosexuality; how it has been seen through ages and the present scenario. Setting the background in comparative studies the proposed research work aims at providing a clear picture of the societal attitudes towards same sex–relationships and how it is varied over time and space. The work will also look into the psychological aspects of the homosexuals and how a woman looks for a secure relationship in another woman and what has brought about such notions. Etymologically, the word homosexual is a hybrid of Greek and Latin words, thus connoting acts of sexual behavior between members of the same sex. The word 'homosexual' is controversial in itself as it refers to only one's sexual behavior as opposed to the romantic feelings and thus, people attribute the term 'gay' and 'lesbian' as appropriate. Homophilia, also means the love and sensibilities between the same sex people. Edward Morgan Forster, a renowned English novelist and essayist was a homosexual as known by his close friends but the public was unaware of this fact and thus, remained a bachelor throughout his life. He had five novels published in his lifetime ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

I chose to research five women from different places across the world who took a stand for lesbian rights. These ladies include: Zohl de Ishtar (Australia), Haya Shalom (Israel), Izabela Jaruga (Poland), Lo Sai "Rose" Wu (China, Hong Kong), and Chuen Juei Ho (China, Taiwan). The first peace woman I want to talk about is Zohl de Ishtar. Zohl is an "Australian lesbian who helps women in Australia on projects in communities and even world wide" (PeaceWomen Across the Globe). By working on the international level she is able to work with a diverse number of people. "She has worked to eliminate nuclear weapons and militarism, campaigned to improve the rights of all peoples, defended cultural integrity and strived to end any form of discrimination, with an emphasis on sexuality" (PeaceWomen Across the Globe). Zohl not only wants to help women with a so called unusual sexual orientation, but also the general public. The second peace woman I want to talk about is Haya Shalom from Israel. Haya is a feminist sponsoring human rights as a lesbian. "She is one of the most well–known women supporting women's unity for peace and women's rights" (PeaceWomen Across the Globe). I respect Shalom for having such an impact on women's rights while being a lesbian. I cannot see the journey to gain rights being an easy task for her. I read that Shalom participated ... • 14. Social Media And Social Movements Kathy Vega Professor Sow English 110 24 May 2016 #LoveWins With the enhancement in technology, it is now accessible to communicate and connect with people across the world. It is effortless to share information like pictures, advertisements, videos and text messages all over the world, to whomever you desire. To many people, it is perceived as a form of entertainment. However, many people do not realize it can also be used as a form of social activism. Summer Harlow author of "Social media and social movements: Facebook and an online Guatemalan justice movement that moved offline" argues that social media is very effective to create social (online) and physical (offline) activism. Lorway examines sexuality as both a social construct and a political one. While this ethnography provides unparalleled information about gender and sexuality in the poorer world, there are a few important flaws, such as the lack of information about radical ideas or behavior, neglect of his own bias, and the length of the ethnography. • 16. The Sociological Imagination And Common Sense The Sociological Imagination was a term that was first coined by sociologist C. Wright Mills. It could be said that definition of The Sociological Imagination is having the ability to look beyond personal experience and realise that society is shaped by the cross over between biography and history. Mills thought that everyone in society had the capability to think sociologically and that this was essential to gain a deeper understanding of both their society, and their current circumstance. This approach contradicts a more readily adopted approach by the public that sociologists call "The common sense approach". The common sense approach is a collection of knowledge that has been acquired through little scientific merit, such as: personal experience, gossip or anecdotal evidence. This essay will discuss and explain the difference between the Sociological Imagination and Common–Sense explanations through the use of examples to explain the topic of sexuality. Sexuality is an issue that has been widely discussed and has often been misunderstood by society. It has often been a misconception by members of the heterosexual community that all lesbians want to be men. Through applying common sense, it can be understood why people may think gay women want to be men when looking in on the lesbian community, some lesbians prefer to express themselves and their sexuality through the way they dress and act; their short hair, masculine clothing, wearing no make–up and their macho ... It is not possible to guess how exactly we will grow from our experiences in the years ahead, but it is possible to predict that growth will continue, one way or another. A diverse and strong global community has been established.(Clark 60) Dr. Don Clark, clinical psychologist and university professor, boldly expresses his views on the changing nature of the gay and lesbian community in his text, Loving Someone Gay. To include it in such a curriculum would be an insult to the lesbian community of today. When first introduced, Rubyfruit Jungle was a tremendous commercial success. Hailed by many as the ultimate lesbian novel of its time, it took a bold and bawdy look at the lesbian experience in America. The storyline moved quickly, tracing the experiences of Molly Bolt, a young southern girl who had been adopted by a severe, conservative mother and her more liberal husband. Brown's novel set a tone that was direct and controversial, and employed language that had never before been used in connection with the lesbian experience (Pela 2). The novel is uniquely American, as it traces Molly's young life from her earliest years in York, Pennsylvania, through a move to a small southern town in Georgia, and finally to the city of New York, where Molly feels as though she belongs. In each setting, Brown forcefully exhibits her craft by capturing not just the dialogue, but the mannerisms, biases, and cultural peculiarities of each locale. Molly's reactions to each move in her life reveal much, not just about her character and motivations, but about life in the latter half of the twentieth century. We live in a land of equality; is letting heterosexual couples but not homosexual couples get married equal? Criminalizing gay marriage is a form of discrimination. Homosexual couples have just as much of a right to pledge their love as straight couples do. Gay marriage should be legalized in Australia, and there are several strong reasons why this has to occur. It will foster acceptance of gay couples and individuals, as well as completely eliminating the negative impact marriage inequality has on the health and wellbeing of same–sex attracted people, and increase the amount of children successfully adopted. There are no downsides, only benefits and equal opportunity. Another reason gay marriage should be legalized in Australia is because it supports the psychological, physical, and social wellbeing amongst homosexuals. Studies have found that people who identify as homosexual face up to twice as much abuse (including physical, mental, sexual or emotional) than their heterosexual counterparts. This prejudice and discrimination adds to biological, social, environmental and psychological factors which can lead to depression and anxiety. 9% of adult men and 15% of women in Australia report same–sex sex attraction or having sexual contact with someone of the same sex, although only 7% identify as lesbian or gay. • 21. Research Paper On Sylvia Rivera I believe that Sylvia Rivera is one of the three most important LGBTQ+ figures in America since 1970, because of her actions during her lifetime and the legacy that she left behind. In particular, her activism called out the conservative and exclusionary politics of LGBT rights groups in the 1970s, and the erasure of transgender women and drag queens from larger movements despite their significance to those groups. Much of Rivera's activism focused on the inclusion and protection of transgender people, and that legacy continues today. For example, the Sylvia Rivera Law Project, an organization that provides legal help to non–cisgender people of color, is named in her honor and fights for many of the same causes that Sylvia herself did. Sylvia, along with her friend and fellow activist Marsha P. Johnson, formed the organization Street Transvestite Action Revolutionaries (STAR) in the 1970s, to advocate for and house homeless drag queens in New York City. Although STAR was not a particularly long–lasting organization, Sylvia's work through STAR and the Metropolitan Community Church of New York left their mark, and the Metropolitan Community Church of New York's shelter for LGBT youth is named after Sylvia. Because of her impact upon the LGBT community during and after the 1970s, I think that Sylvia Rivera would be an excellent choice for one of the three most important LGBTQ+ figures since 1970. Many hard fought custody and legal battles mark this period. Most of the current literature on lesbian parenting continues to fall under this category. Focusing on psychological outcomes, this research examines children born within a previous heterosexual relationship (see, for example, Victor and Fish 1995; Parks 1998). In part, this constructs an entry point for gays and lesbians to enter the "voting bloc and market niche," by erasing their differences to blend into the mainstream (Gross 2011, xvi). Determined by power, social systems are a mechanism through which politics and economy disperse power, to the dominant groups (Foucault 2001). In this case, the dominant group is acceptance of the power is the heterosexual nuclear family. In this way, medical models of conception and family building promote the dominance of heterosexual nuclear family discourses and what is a valid 'family' in society (Brown 2003; Newnham 2010). Compulsory heterosexuality assumes a naturalness to heterosexuality, an ideology presented and critiqued by Adrienne Rich in her essay "Compulsory Heterosexuality and Lesbian Existence" (1980). Yet, the advent of identity politic reform originates in the Fifties, a decade that saw the African–American Civil Rights Movement start to gain momentum. On the heels of the Civil Rights movement, we also see the Women's Liberation Movement begin to gain steam, shortly thereafter followed by the Gay Liberation Movement. And as an offshoot of these reform movements, we observe the dawn of lesbian identity politics – a movement very much its own amongst its predecessors. One sect would come to be coined the "lavender menace" of feminism – a group of mostly Caucasian lesbians – followed later by the black lesbian feminist group, The Combahee River Collective. ... Black feminists, such as those in the Combahee River Collective, experienced very similar discrimination in Civil Rights campaigns, especially groups like the Black Panthers. Just like Jay, many African–American women were used as sexual remuneration to men who did good work within their organizations. This patriarchy, antithetic to the goals of feminism, was the undoubted enemy of both these lesbian organizations – usurping it became one clear goal. The Combahee River Collective, though, did not feel separate from African–American men concerning race, yet, felt doubly oppressed by white patriarchy. Understanding that they connected with black men racially, yet struggled with them sexually, almost supplements the idea that white men – who controlled government and economy – were the ultimate oppressor. They did not feel they were separate, but rather, just opposed to black men along patriarchal lines. Inversely, the Collective connected with white lesbians against patriarchy, but were subjected to hierarchy within feminism as well as lesbianism. • 27. The 's Reflection Of The Ancient Women Queering Vivien's poem entails finding the elements of imitation, anonymity, and/or appropriation. Two of these elements, anonymity and imitation are clear in Vivien's reflection of the ancient women on Lesbos in herself. Imitation provides Vivien with a means of growing in sexuality, a gaining of knowledge of the women of Lesbos's ways. The ancient Lesbians work as a template, but suddenly become the same as the lesbians of Vivien's time referred to as "our" (18). The result of imitation is growing nearer toward the likeness of the ancient Lesbians. Vivien's body metaphorically becomes "a reflecting mirror," taking up all aspects of the ancient Lesbians. Vivien and her lesbians go beyond queer imitation to a new form, the same form as the ancient Lesbians. Vivien's group cannot be distinguished from the ancient Lesbians, since they all mirror one another. Imitation renders Vivien's bodies queer and identical. There is no singular body at any point only but "our" bodies. Anonymity then is also relevant to Vivien's poem. One cannot differentiate between the present "our" bodies and ancient "their" bodies either. No difference exists between them, as they are mirror images of each other. The bodies in the poem are queer as they are both anonymous and imitated, yet simultaneously the bodies transcend time. Bridging a long period of time (ancient Greece to 19th centure Britain) means Vivien does not have a full picture of how these women of Lesbos lived. Imitating the past ... It's also about the slow grind and struggle of those who work behind the scenes to make things happen. Nobody exemplifies this more than Ruth Simpson, a gay rights activist who toiled for decades to raise awareness of LGBTQ rights in the US. In 1976, when Ruth wrote her pioneering book on lesbian identity, From the Closet to the Courts, gay men and women could be fired from their jobs, targeted by police, or harassed on the street with full impunity. The majority of US states even legally barred gay people from certain jobs, including those in teaching, policing, law and medicine–even dentistry. If anything is testament to the work that LGBTQ activists like Ruth have done, it is that such measures seem ludicrous and unthinkable today. But the world that Ruth operated in was a vastly different one. Born to two committed socialists deeply involved in the labor movement, Ruth was exposed to activism at an early age. By the time she was 12, her parents were taking her to picket lines, where she witnessed her father beaten up by a cop right in front of her. The only only admissible relationships are between a man and woman. Sappho's "Ode to Jealousy" challenges homophobia by relying on the readers knowledge of social norms within the era the poem was written. Greek society's lack of acceptance toward female homosexuality greatly determines the willingness of women to outwardly admit to their sexualities. The poem hints at the present homophobia by society instilling the fear of coming out in the speaker. The speaker also implies that her jealousy is for a culture that would accept her homosexuality. The envy of the ability to be outward with emotions is shown in the inhibition of the speaker's physicality toward a women she loves. When it comes to the women she desires, she feels "a step from death" (Sappho, l.15), however it is not the women specifically that is killing her; it is the social constructs of her era that will not allow them to be together. The Five Major Aspects Of The Life Course Theory The life course perspective, or life course theory, is an approach that includes the mental, physical, and social heath of individuals to determine the affect they have on the experiences of the individual throughout their life course. Life course theory focuses directly on the impact of historical and socioeconomic contexts which can alter how individuals from various cohorts experience the world during their life course. A fundamental assumption of the life course theory is that lives of the individuals are lived in a reasonably ordered manner in patterns shaped by age, social structures, and historical change. The life course theory has five distinct principle which are time and place, life–span development, timing, agency, and linked lives (Black, 2008). These distinct principles are important to the life course theory because individually they influence the ways in which one perceives the events in their life. Time and place are important because a person's life is shaped by the question of when and where. Life–span development is a distinct principle because the way in each one develops biologically, socially, and psychologically goes beyond childhood to later influence the new situations of adulthood. An Examination of Rubyfruit Jungle and Her Critics Essay An Examination of Rubyfruit Jungle and Her Critics Rita Mae Brown's first novel, Rubyfruit Jungle made waves when it was first released in 1973. Its influence has not gone away over the years and is in its seventh printing. While mainstream critics failed to acknowledge Rubyfruit Jungle in their papers, magazines and discussions on contemporary literature, there are plenty of non–mainstream voices to fill the void. While these lesser–known sources are not always credible, and certainly not always accurate they have created a word–of– mouth reputation of the novel and have facilitated its continuous success. The problem in researching such a novel is that there is very little criticism. One cannot rely on book reviews ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Molly Bolt is amoral and narcissistic. While she breaks the stereotypes of lesbians, she doesn't do much to draw favor to them, or to show them in a realistic, positive light. Rubyfruit Jungle may have been one of the first novels that featured a lesbian heroine, which might have drawn tons of press and criticism, but perhaps because it was still a negative image of homosexuality brought forth in a new light, it was not the time to jump on it as the winning novel some book reviews have coined it. Molly Bolt was the only character in the novel to show courage, but she did not show morals, values or strength of character. Her early sexual encounters appeared to be nothing more than childhood stupidity, but Molly never grew out of it. By the end of the book, she still had never had a loving relationship with a woman, and vowed never to settle down with one. At one point she was having an affair with a married woman and her seventeen year old daughter, simply because they were sexually attractive. This shows a great lack of concern for others as well as no disregard for consequences. Without strength of character, Molly Bolt while strong and independent is not the ideal spokesperson for being a lesbian, which might be part of the void of discussion in acedamia regarding the novel. Rita Mae Brown offers a fresh style, wit, humor and enjoyable characters, but after ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 38. Living As A Lesbian, And August Jordan 's A New Politics... The articles that stood out the most to me were Cheryl Clarke's "Living As a Lesbian" and June Jordan's "A New Politics of Sexuality". These articles stood out, because while given a similar topic (lesbians) they both possessed very different, yet similar arguments. I found this interesting because it is a prime example of societies different views on controversial topics. Cheryl and June's articles contain many differences, similarities and information to be reflected on. Cheryl's main arguments are that everyone who loves women (whether its romantically, sexually, platonically, etc.) is a feminist and lesbians are all part of a rebellion. She states, "No matter how a woman lives out her lesbianism–––she has rebelled against becoming the slave master's concubine, viz., the male–dependent female, the female heterosexual." This gives evidence towards her argument that lesbians, regardless their intentions are resisting from the constructs that society wants them to adhere to. June would disagree with this statement, arguing that lesbians aren't solely out to rebel but are just pursuing their lives freely. Cheryl also points out that there is no one sort of lesbian and that whether you consider yourself a "full blown lesbian" or "bisexual" it doesn't change the fact that you are resisting against the heterosexual society. This being true, Cheryl Clarke also disagrees with the idea of bisexuality; whereas June Jordan identifies as bisexual. Following along with this Cheryl ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 39. How Heteronormativity And Media Stereotypes On Queer... Running head: HOW HETERONORMATIVITY AND MEDIA STEREOTYPES IN SOCIETY INFLUENCES HOW QUEER PEOPLE EXPRESS THEIR SEXUALITIES How heteronormativity and media stereotypes influences how queer people express their sexualities Vanessa Gomes Ryerson University "Who is the man in the relationship?" "Who tops or bottoms?" These questions have become a fundamental part in queer people's lives. Why do non queer people need for queer people and their relationships to imitate heternormative heterosexual ones to understand them? Why are all lesbian women portrayed as butch, and all gay men as flamboyant? Do these ideas being reinforced over and over affect how queer people view their own sexuality? When our society is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In media, queer men and women are almost always portrayed in stereotypical roles, and bisexuality is almost always expressed as a phase or not real. These ideas affect how others view queer identities and how queer people view their own identity, and the social norms around them. Men are commonly described as "feminine" whilst women are portrayed as "masculine" (Tara Sarper, 2013). How did these widespread ideas come to exist and how do they continue to affect members of the community? These stereotypes can be harmful as they build a picture of what it means to be a certain sexuality, as well as the heteronormativity behind the stereotype. We often see queer people in relationships being asked who's the dominant one, the man in the relationship, the top, etc. These ideas come from a heteronormative society that puts harmful misogynistic norms even in relationships where women might not be present. Where does the overwhelming pressure for there to be a "man" or "top" in the relationship come from, and why are those two associated with each other? Since same sex relationships go against the norm in society, society still puts pressure on heternormative ideas to be present in them. If two men decide they want to be exclusively a bottom or top, dominant or submissive, in either their sexual relationship or in their general dynamic, that is their choice and right to do so. However, a social constructionist would say ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
