Child Shelter
Volunteering at the women and children shelter in Orlando was an experience I will never forget.
This shelter houses about 75 women that has children. If a woman has 3 or more children she will be
able to have her own room. However, if not, you will share a room with another mother and child.
At the shelter, there are many different activities there for the children to stay occupied. There was a
television room, a music activity room, also a library and computer lab. They also had a huge dining
room where the families could eat together. They have a schedule routine for breakfast, lunch and
dinner which is served certain times every day. The shelter was upkept, clean, and very well
organized. Even though some of the women were married, no

Social Service Organizations Essay
Today there is a great need for social service organizations. The population of a lot of cities and
countries has grown, creating the need for more shelters, soup kitchens, and so on. Most of these
organizations are church based and community founded. Then there are others that are funded by
federal and state government.
The Durham Rescue Mission is a church based organization. They provide a lot of help and shelter
for the homeless and for low–income families. Reverend Ernie C. Mills founded the mission in
1974. The first mission was just a two–story house. It has since then grown to be a about the size of
an average church.
The mission is open to the public year round, and does not close its doors. There is always someone

There are a lot of young single mothers out there that have kids and can't provide for them. The
either don't have the know how or just don't have the support group that they need. There are also a
lot of families that have lost everything due to loss of jobs of natural disaster. These people need a
place to stay till they get back on their feet, and they also may need a little family counseling. Then
there is the whole homeless issue, these people have nowhere to go and need food and the bare
necessities like everyone else.
When it comes to things like shelters and helping others there are always some ethical issues behind
them. Then again there are ethical issues behind everything. Here are a couple of them. Whether or
not you are doing the right thing by helping these people. If your motive for doing it is right, Should
they if they are not Christian be subjected to the Christian faith? I believe that it is the right thing to
do. Helping people wherever you can will and always will be the right thing to do. As far the motive
whatever it is, if you are doing the right thing then it is ok with me. The person that you help is not
going too care if you did it just to impress someone. However if you are not a Christian and you do
go into a Christian shelter you had prior knowledge of where you were going. If you don't like what
they are telling about God and you don't want to here it then don't go back.
The mission it self does a great

No-Kill Shelters Rehabilitation for Animals
No–Kill shelters rehabilitate animals that could be good pets. This also includes any animal that is
injured or sick. Throughout the world, many people think that some animals are bad or are
considered dangerous. Although, some may be true, but it is mostly false because the dogs that are
consider dangerous, for example pit bulls or rottweilers, these animals are victims. They are victims
because they don't know what is good because they were train differently or they were abused by
their owners or they were dog fighters.
No–Kill Rescue Shelters, rescues any animal that is healthy and that could be treatable.
Unfortunately, there are time, were No–kill shelters cannot rescue animals, when the animals are
unadoptable and untreatable. Unadoptable is any animal that cannot be adopted because they are
badly injury, or they have caught a disease that cannot be cured. Untreatable is any animal that
cannot be place in a suitable home, because they are really aggressive and they are noted to be very
dangerous animals. When untreatable animals cannot be adoptable but the shelter had at least try to
treat the animal, by law they have to euthanize because the animal is dangerous to the community.
Joanne was talking to me, I had ask her if traditional shelter euthanasia right away if an animal bites
or barks aggressively? She told me that she had experience, where a woman and her kid got bit by
dog and unfortunately that dog had to be put down. By law, if any animal attacks a

In Bradford County There Is A Major Problem With Poverty.
In Bradford County there is a major problem with poverty. Poverty is defined as the level of income
considered extremely poor. In Bradford County the poverty rate is 20.6 percent which is
significantly higher than the 13.5 percent national poverty rate. Both immigrants and citizens who
are faced with poverty have little or no means of support. People who live in poverty are faced with
starvation, lack of healthcare, lack of clothing and housing. Because of the poverty rate and lack of
resources for the poor, Bradford County needs a shelter. A shelter can offer a temporary home for
immigrants and regular citizens who need somewhere to live. Shelters usually offer meal programs
for the hungry. Shelters can help in giving people the medical ... Show more content on

percent increase since the homeless count in 2013 (Halstead). These numbers are only expected to
go up in the coming years, as long the problem of not enough room in shelters exist.
In addition to the individual homeless population growing, the streets of Marin will see another
consequence that the county faces due to this problem. The community will see a significant
increase in the number of homeless families. Marin now more than before is seeing more families
living on the streets. According to Marin county, as of January 29, 2015 there was a total of 1,309
homeless people. That is a 38% increase since January 2013. However, that count does not account
for those homeless who find alternative shelters, such as, cars, and under passes. Another study
revealed that 15% of the overall homeless population are families with children. 35% of those
surveyed for the 2015 count said that this was their first time experiencing homelessness. 51% said
that they had been homeless for a year or more (Marin County Census). With these alarming
statistics, it has become quite clear what the impact of lack of shelter spaces in Marin County has
done a significant amount of damage to the community.
Home values will decrease as the homeless population increases. People believe that if there are
shelters near their homes that the value will decrease significantly. Having homeless people
lingering around one's house can be disturbing to residents, especially in Marin for those who pride

Essay on Homeless Women in America
Homeless Women in America
Today in the U.S. there is a large percentage of people that are homeless. There are so many
questions when one sees a homeless person, for example why doesn't he or she get a job and get out
of the streets? People that make comments like the one just made probably doesn't really know
anyone that is homeless so they do no understand what they go through. In the book " Tell Me Who
I Am,'' Elliot Liebow tries to explain what the cost and gains are for women living in a homeless
shelter.
In 1984 Elliot Liebow decided to study homeless women in Washington D.C.
The place that he volunteered at was called the "Refuge Shelter for Homeless Women.'
At this shelter Liebow became great friends with ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He said that these women would try to show people
along with themselves that they were mentally ill. These women would start to feel sorry
for themselves and feel like it's them against the world.
Another cost that the women experienced from living at the shelter was their
inability to get a job. The reason for this was because the women would not be able to
put a phone number and address on the application. Some of the women may get hired
for a job but the employer was not able to get in touch with them to in form the women.
The women could put down the address to the shelter but most wouldn't because they
believed that employers would be scared off. The women tried to get the head of the
shelter to change the way that the phone was answered but the request was denied.
Another cost from living at the shelter was the fact that the will always be racism.
In the shelter there many different points of views every person had a opinion about a
certain issue. There were some women that didn't like other women
because of there race. This was a issue that wasn't a favorite of most people at the shelter. Some of
the white females felt like they couldn't be friends with black females because of the attitudes of the
black females. One women was noted for saying that black people ruled Washington. This comment

The Survival Of The Group
1. "Shelter–in–place" means "to get inside and stay put inside a building or vehicle". ("Stay Put –
Learn how to Shelter in Place", 2016) The factors that dictate the amount of people your shelter can
support is the amount of food, water, and space available. 2. I would shelter with: my brother, Eric;
my sister, Julia; my mother, Kim; my aunt, Karen; and my uncle, Steve. Karen would be the leader
because she is a physician's assistant and is able to effectively communicate. Karen would
contribute to the survival of the group by communicating to everyone what is needed for survival.
Steve is a Psychiatrist and would contribute to the mental and emotional stability of the group. Kim
would contribute to the survival of the group with her resourcefulness and ability to supply the
group with appropriate amounts of food and water. Julia would contribute to the survival of the
group by maintaining safety. With a degree in construction management, Julia would be able to
figure out an adequate shelter. Eric would contribute to the safety of the group. The people in my
group provide protection by physical strength and communication skills. (Emergency Medical
Response, 2011, p.626) 3. "Hazardous materials" are "any chemical substance or material that can
pose a threat to the health, safety and property of an individual." (Emergency Medical Response,
2011, p.613) Common hazmat items found in Portland are chlorine, ammonia, sulfuric acid, paraffin

Proposal For Homelessness
Homeless in Anaheim
What can be proposed by the city to the public audience to help the homeless in need? In Anaheim,
there is a problem with the growing amount of homeless people on the streets of our city; their
presence has been increasing within parks, streets, in front of businesses, etc. The reason for why we
chose this topic is because our group wants to be able to help these individuals get their life back on
track, rather them having these unemployed people living out on the filthy streets. I constantly see
individuals begging for money at the exits of freeways and cross lights, instead of seeing them work
for their money. To do this, we need to be able to convince our community to propose programs to
city hall that will help homeless ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Being caring and helpful is what Anaheim is all about, We are the happiest place on earth! If we had
more vagrant shelters we will have less people sleeping in the streets. Less people living in the
streets will help prevent problems in the future. Vagrant people have no place to go when it's raining
or when it's cold. They go to the nastiest places to find shelter throughout the night. Our proposal
seeks to decrease the amount of destitute people living in the streets. With employment aid centers,
one can look for a job with an agency that can help you find the right job that suits the person. Not
only are they there to assist you in finding a job, they are also there to help you with interview
questions and help set up a resume. The cost of this will be around $500,000 dollars per year. The
cost may be pricy but that isn't going to stop us from helping our fellow allies. This can shelter over
26,000 men, women and children into homes. Voters came to conclusion to purchase a 24,390–
square–foot warehouse at 1000 N. Kraemer Place for $4.25 million to open a homeless shelter
home. The shelter will have 200 beds and will shelter homeless people for up to 1 month free of
charge. A destitute person can die from hunger every day, but with our help we will be able to feed
them on a daily bases. Some critics we may receive are that if it is funded or aided by a faith
organization that they will push their religious beliefs upon them. Another critic may be that
Homeless shelters are not permanent residences. We believe that everyone should have the chance
of having some kind of shelter. If they really want shelter they will be here as soon as possible, as
usual first come first serve. Every situation has their problems to face, but ours are just a bit harder
to face alone. The Anaheim residence will do whatever it takes to help its fellow peers living in the
streets, for we are the happiest place

Government Poverty
How the government could help solve poverty.
Poverty is when someone is not capable of supporting them self. In the United States, there is a large
percent of people that need help getting out of poverty. Poverty is like a dangerous drug, once
poverty starts pulling you down it's hard to bring yourself up. The government can help improve
homelessness in America by creating a bigger budget, opening shelters, and providing clothes
The government could invest in things that would benefit the homeless. The government puts
money towards things like putting armrest in the middle of benches so that homeless people can't
lay on them. They should take this money from buying arms rest and put it towards paying for
shelters. Every year the president creates a budget for the united states. The congress must pass this
bill. The congress and the president should come together to plan to decrease the amount of money
that is spent on the military. This money could be donated to create a company that would wash
clothes. The government could also donate some money that would help homeless people start
looking for jobs. The government can also benefit from helping the poor, they can help the poor
people get jobs which they can ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Homeless people need a place to get clean clothes to keep them from catching diseases. In the U.S,
each year people die from getting diseases that is caused by dirty clothes and having wet clothes on.
One way this could be fixed, is if the government funds a company to take homeless people's dirty
clothes. Then give homeless people a week supply of clothes that has been donated or bought by the
government. This would give the company time to be able to keep up with the amount of cloths that
needs to be washed. The feeling one gets, knowing people are trying to help them would make their
day and even weeks. This will eventually help them get a

Homeless Shelters
Currently, there are a lot of services available to those that are homeless. Homeless shelters are a
commonly known resource and the first place a homeless person will probably go once they have
exhausted their own resources. Most shelters provide meals, showers, and few other basic needs.
Men's shelters are usually only for men 18 or older and you must be sober to stay. Women's shelters
generally allow them to bring their children, although in some cases, there is an age limit for boys.
Some cities also have family shelters available. There are also special shelters for people such as
veteran's shelters and pregnant women shelters. Drop In Centers are daytime shelters that provide
basic needs and some recreation and resources for the homeless who have nowhere to go during the
day. Another important resource for the homeless is transitional housing. Transitional housing is a
type of housing that allows homeless people that fit a certain criteria to take part in a program that

An Emergency Case Of Emergency Involving Chemical Release
Sorensen et al. (2004) states that two questions play a significant role in concluding whether to
evacuate or provide in–place shelter in case of an emergency involving chemical release. The first
question to consider is will shelter–in–place provides adequate protection? And second thing to
consider is if there is enough time to evacuate. There are various advantages and disadvantages of
both the responses (Sorensen et al., 2004). The advantages of instituting shelter–in–place are that it
is: It is immediate; people are more relaxed in their familiar surroundings and feel secure; and basic
amenities like food, clothing, water, telephone, radio and television are readily available. The
disadvantage is that precise, correct, dependable information is more complicated to receive. On the
other hand the advantages of evacuating are that people are away from the exposed chemicals, and
moved to mass care shelters, plus information is more reliable and medical relief is prompt. Some of
the disadvantages of evacuation are that it is time consuming; evacuees may not listen to the
directions and decide to stay home and some might decide to move to other locations making it very
difficult to track those (Sorenen et al., 2004). Evacuation is usually the last resort considered as it is
very complex and involves various processes. The most important concern is that communities
should be well planned ahead of time and have an emergency preparedness plan and educate the
public about

Recession On Homeless
Homelessness can happen to anyone, you can be the richest person in the world today and lose it all
tomorrow and be out in the streets without knowing what to do. According to Greg Owen and

They stated, "In the year 2000, when the U.S. economy was at a high point, nearly a quarter of all
adults who were homeless in our state had full–time jobs. The 2012 survey shows us that only 8
percent of those who are homeless today have full–time jobs" this survey shows that not all
homeless people are poor it's just they cannot find affordable housing because of the economy. This

Animal Shelters In North America
Animal shelters are facilities "devoted to the temporary housing and care of homeless and unwanted
pets" (Spector). They are the only places that willingly take care of these animals and find them
loving homes. There have always been people dedicating themselves to protecting animals, but not
with shelters as organized, professional, and successful as today. With about 165 million dogs and
cats living in homes, twenty percent of them came from animal shelters (Winograd xi). Some
background information to know relating to animal shelters is the largest ones in the nation and
locally. The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) was the first

There is a common misconception that all pets in shelters come from a bad past, like having been
abused or mistreated, but that is by no means the case (Scott 16). Animals end up in shelters for all
kinds of reasons. Many owners are just no longer able to care for their pet, be it because of money or
a new landlord or not having enough time or any other reason, so they have to give them up. But, on
the other side of that, lots of pets do come from abusive owners. They are also found as strays in the
streets, lost and hungry. Pets coming from these types of situations are often traumatized, but the
volunteers at the shelters try their best to relax them. Another way a shelter could end up with more
animals is from being given them by other shelters which are becoming too full. But whether it is
from one of the former reasons or another, animal shelters somehow end up with the pets and need

The Importance Of Drug Testing And Background Screening
Drug testing and background screening allows staff to be able to separate sexual predators, violent
criminals and drug abusers. This is to protect staff, volunteers and residents from harm and to
determine what type of help abusers need. Drug tests and background screenings are necessary to
ensure the safety of residents, volunteers and staff at the homeless shelter. Homeless shelters
administer background screenings and drug testing to all potential residents. Drug testing is to
determine what type of help they need to provide. Background screenings are to expose any violent
criminals or sexual predators. The purpose of this is to help the shelter meet its goals. Should
homeless shelters administer background screenings and drug tests? Drug testing and background
screenings allow staff to separate sexual predators, violent criminals and drug abusers. This is to
protect staff, volunteers and residents from harm and to determine what help drug and alcohol
abusers need. This is to protect residents, also to provide a safe, comfortable place to live. The
purpose of this is to ensure the safety of residents, volunteers and staff at the shelter. Drugs and
alcohol have always been closely linked to homelessness and people who have committed violent or
sexual crimes tend to have a harder time finding jobs. "Drinking alcohol is a choice, a temporary
solution that makes the problem worse." Because of drug testing upon entering the shelter, Raul was

The Short And Medium Term Needs For Emergency Shelter
Intro
Contemporary designers and architects are addressing the short and medium term needs of people
who require emergency and refugee shelters, by evaluating the requirements of people once they
have been displaced from their home due to a natural disaster, or any other adversity that they may
face. This article will compare and contrast different types of emergency shelters, both short and
long term, and appraise the key considerations that contemporary designers and architects must
make while creating these refuges.
Addressing short and medium term needs for emergency shelter
A short–term emergency shelter is usually something that people call transitional accommodation.
The short term needs for an emergency shelter consist of: A place to sleep, a roof over their head,
showers, cleans drinking water and food. Designer's need to come up with a way that they can gain
access to clean water and safe food in the midst of a natural disaster, and how they will get it to

On September 30, 2017, not only did my family save a puppy's life but he also saved ours. His name
is Gunner and he is an Australian Shepherd. Gunner was located in Licking County Humane Society
and he needed a forever home. Not only did Gunner need a savior but, the author needed a savior to
save her from a heartbreaking relationship. One great thing about adopting is knowing that any dog
that will get picked will be grateful for anything and love whoever no matter what. One problem that
needs solved immediately is the overpopulation of animals in the shelters around Columbus, Ohio.
There are numerous ways to prevent overpopulation in shelters and that's to adopt, get rid of
stereotypes of dogs, and open more no kill shelters. One solution that has happened to prevent the
overpopulation was using euthanasia on the animals to prevent "increase human exposure to
dangerous public health risks, such as rabies." The problem with this solution is that it involves one
the problems we are trying to get rid of, and that's euthanasia. The overpopulation is normally
caused by a natural disaster or people who can't take care of their pets. When the author went to
adopt her dog Gunner, there were 2 or 3 dogs there that was rescued from Hurricane Irma and
knowing they are safe and sound, is a great feeling. But they still need a place to call home. The
overpopulation leads to shelters trying to decide to be an open shelter or a limited access shelter
which includes euthanasia or not.

Case Studies Of Temporary Shelters
Case Studies of Temporary Shelters: This research on case studies synthesizes three existing
temporary or "transitional" structures. These temporary structures are Global Village Shelters,
Butterfly Houses, and Collapsible Woven shelter. This case studies analysis ways structurally sound
shelters have been developed for migratory workers and homeless people in different geographical
parts of the world. Some of the ideas have been implemented in the USA, Thailand, and Jordan.
This research examines an orphanage shelter designed to both serve the purpose of a shelter and
help children have fun on a swing tied to the roof of the shelter. All case studies have similar goal of
building affordable temporary shelters for the homeless population. Global Village Shelter In 2004,
Weyerhauser, a paper company manufactured the Global Village Shelter. The motive behind the
manufacturing of the shelter was to create emergency or "transitional" shelters for people without a
place to reside. With the goal of making a structure which is environmentally friendly, they
manufactured their structure with biodegradable materials. "Biodegradable laminated material, are
low–cost temporary emergency shelters that can last up to eighteen months"("Design for the other
90%," May 4– September 23, 2007). First of all, the shelters were made to not only provide a roof
over the heads of those who need them, but they were also made to provide comfort to it users.

Animal abandonment Have you ever seen an animal wandering the streets with no collar, no home?
This is because of animal abandonment. Animal abandonment is a problem facing the world.
Animals are becoming homeless and there are many causes as well as solutions. One of the causes is
pet overpopulation. Some of the solutions may be shelters if they are at the right kind of one and
rescuing and adopting. There are many causes to animal abandonment and pet overpopulation is one
of them. Pet overpopulation is a problem causing more stray and abandoned pets all throughout the

In addition to fostering, rescuing and adopting animals from shelters minimizes animal
overpopulation and abandonment. Puppy mills are places that breed dogs and then sells them,
however these places are considered harmful and inhumane to the dogs they are breeding. Many
shelters rescue animals from situations like puppy mills, abuse and abandonment and put them up
for adoption. Shelters however provide opportunities and gives a second chance to these animals.
Therefore shelters have adoption events to help find these abandonment pets a good, new home. As
result as well as reducing pet abandonment, getting a rescue from a shelter could also save a life if
they are at a kill shelter. In conclusion it's important to know the causes of animal abandonment but
it's also important to know possible solutions and how to help the abandoned animals. Animals are
being abandoned for causes like overpopulation. There are different solutions to this worldwide
problem, like non– kill shelters and fostering and also adopting. We need to help the animals find a
second chance at a new home. Are you up for the challenge? Sources

Solutions To Homelessness In America
Homeless There are roughly around 322,762,018 people in the United States. Of this large number,
Social Solutions found that there was 564,708 homeless people in America during the year of 2016.
This has been a problem for quite some time and I think it is time that we make a change.
Unfortunately many of these people are sleeping on the streets. Part of the reason is, is because there
is not enough room in the shelters. There are solutions to these problems, it just takes some people
to take action. Some options are building more homeless shelters, using vacant buildings as shelters,
and having people in helping This is becoming a big problem today because people are dying from
weather conditions and hunger. Running out of room in shelters ... Show more content on

Non Kill Animal Shelter Research Paper
How would you like to spot an adorable pet being ready to adopt. Later to find out that it had been
euthanized. This happens everyday tow tons of people that happened to spot that animal at a
traditional shelter. Non–kill animal shelters should replace way traditional shelters so that no
traditional shelters exist. The first reason I agree with this statement is because they're are more
adoptions likely to take place in a non–kill animal shelter, rather than a traditional animal shelter.
The article states,"Adoption guarantee (no–kill) shelters her it everyday. 'I came to your facility to

"People who love animals want to donate their money to agencies that save animals,"says the article.
That example represents the fact that if the shelter obtained a no–kill policy, it would get donated
money to help care for & find space for the animals. Also, it's said that no–kill shelters are generally
more likely to get employees. As the staff will be able to get attached and gain a connection with the
animals without the possibility of having to euthanize them due to money and space issues. That
would be something the staff would appreciate. They would love to have a strong bond with an
animal without fearing to euthanize them. In conclusion, more people will apply for a job, as well as
more donations will take place at a no–kill shelter. Although many shelters claim that a lot of the
animals they put down are unadoptable animals. Animals such as overly aggressive, harmful
animals, and wildly behaved as well. However, a ton of those animals have had truamatizing

Emergency Shelter : A New Model Called Housing Essay
Emergency Shelters in Springfield
Maxwell, Klayton, Sierra, Addison
The red flag we chose dealing with Housing was the critical need for emergency shelter. Homeless
people are not getting enough help to get on their feet. Especially the lack of shelter beds. There are
multiple reasons why a person would need an overnight emergency bed, like those fleeing domestic
violence, those leaving care institutions into homelessness, etc. A lot of the actual places to use have
specified hours that they are willing to accept people. (springfieldmo.gov). One blue ribbon is that,
"A new model called Housing First is being implemented in Springfield and around the country to
focus on providing people experiencing homelessness with housing as quickly as possible–and then
providing services as needed." (CFR).
"There could be as many as 15 to 20 homeless people in the Greene County jail at any given time."
(Homeless Task Force 2010). There are currently more than 750 homeless, and over 250 are without
shelter each night. There is currently more than $1,000,000 in funding to support the homeless
people in Greene County and the Ozarks.
The ideal state is having no homeless, but that probably won't happen. What can happen is reducing
the homeless population as close as we can to 0%. "Homelessness damages people 's capability

The Threat Of The Tropical Cyclone
Introduction
Throughout the nation, natural, technological, and man–made disasters jeopardizes communities as
a whole. Many people rely on their local communities emergency preparedness plans, while they
should be utilizing their knowledge, information provided for them, and using their capabilities to
ready themselves and their families. The outcome that can come from any disastrous event mainly
relies on how you respond to the specific threat, and the steps one takes to minimize the risks of
such a scenario. Being from Florida, I have been subject to several types, and forms, of disasters;
but the most common and the one that can pose one of the greatest threats is the tropical cyclone,
also known as the hurricane. When concerning this ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Many times, these choices can be based on their previous experience and their knowledge of tropical
cyclones. Many families, including my own, that has been a resident of Florida for a multitude of
years has experienced numerous storms and aware of their capabilities. Over the past quarter decade
alone, there have been severe landings that have stricken the Florida Coast line, such as Hurricane
Andrew in 1992, Hurricane Irene in 1999, and the four storms that landed in 2004, Hurricanes
Charley, Frances, Ivan, and Jeanne.
All of these landings have convinced many people to seek further knowledge and to conduct better
preparation standards in the inevitability of another landing. In fact, Chris Landsea, through the
National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration Hurricane Research Division states, "For
the U.S., the locations that have the highest chances are the following: Miami, Florida – 48%"(
2014). This means that every year Florida, Miami more specifically, has a forty–eight percent
chance of being hit by a hurricane. With the high percentage of Florida possibly being struck each
year, many residents have possibly become disillusioned about the possible catastrophic damage
these storms can truly cause.
In addition to the residential firsthand knowledge, and reoccurrence of these natural disasters,
another aspect that can affect the decisions

Essay on Taking Care of Animals: Kill Versus No-Kill Shelter
Animals are beloved creatures among the human race, and are deeply cared for. As caretakers of
pets, those caretakers have a responsibility to these animals. One of those responsibilities includes
making sure all animals are properly taken care of and are placed in a loving home. Many of these
poor animals, mostly cats and dogs, are cast unwanted onto the streets to fend for themselves. Once
they are cast out, where are they to end up? The ones that survive being discarded by neglectful
owners are usually found and taken to a nearby animal shelter. These shelters are set up and
designed for stray animals to be taken care of until a new owner can be found. Shelters also
graciously accept pets from owners who choose to surrender their ... Show more content on

Other kinds of shelters are non–profit organizations that are set up by individuals. Most of these
smaller organizations are only interested in certain dogs, such as a certain breed, rare breeds, or a
certain size of dog. These organizations usually house their animals in foster homes because they do
not have a physical location for their operation. Most of these smaller organizations are no–kill
unless the animals are injured or are not able to be adopted by a family ("No–Kill" Black). These
organizations can do a great deal of good and save many animals from a terrible fate. However,
when it comes to bigger shelters with a no–kill policy, it can be very harmful for the animals
involved. Overall, the no–kill policy is not as beneficial as society tends to think. The public views
shelters with a no–kill policy as more humane or civilized; however, this is not always the case. A
no–kill shelter probably started as a wonderful idea, but was soon turned into a very bad thing. The
idea of a no–kill shelter is that any animals that is well–tempered enough or healthy enough to be
adopted out, would be. The negative aspect of no–kill shelters is that once they run out of room to
place the animals, a few things start happening. When shelters are filled to capacity, they are forced
to turn away animals in need. These animals that are turned away are left on the streets or in the
hand or irresponsible owners who cannot properly take

The Controversial Issue Of The Homeless
The controversial issue of the homeless in New York has been an ongoing battle for several years.
Many leaders like Andrew Cuomo have come to the conclusion that obligating homeless people into
shelters should be enforced, yet others oppose the idea. They believe such harsh actions shouldn 't
be taken. Journalist like Hinckley, who wrote "Can New York Force Homeless People into
Shelters?" and Marc Santo, who wrote "Keep New York 's homeless off the streets!" have written
articles with fact based information with details on the homeless living conditions. In my opinion,
such actions shouldn 't occur. The homeless in New York have the right to choose their living
conditions, therefore they shouldn 't be obligated to be put in shelters. New York leaders demand
that homeless people must be forced into shelter, but the truth is that money needs to be spent. The
mayor, De Blasio, agrees that money shouldn 't be spent. De Blasio unveiled a housing plan that
consists of $2.6 billion dollars. Shelters are sometimes worse than the streets themselves. Several
homeless who have entered shelters justify this statement. That statement validates why the housing
plan is a much safer option. On the other hand, the governor defends the idea of pressuring homeless
into shelters. According to Cuomo, "If I get sued for keeping people safe and people in from the
cold because they were endangering themselves, so be it." (Hinckley 29–30). This is meant to show
his compassion and sympathy.

How Strict Animal Shelter Policies Can Cause Pets
I Was Stressed so I Ate a Wall, Pooped White for a Week, Then Was Returned to the Animal Shelter
Allison Gray in her article "How Strict Animal Shelter Policies Can Cause Pets to Suffer," offers a
harsh critique that animal shelters hold a very strict adoption process by not allowing unqualified pet
owners to adopt. She argues that adoption shelters want to find the perfect owner, but the perfect
owner does not exist by her claims. Therefore, pets are not adopted out and are left to suffer in
animal shelters. With the guidelines for pet adoption already in place she states that most pets were
not adopted out because prospecting owners had an intact pet at home, their current pet was overdue
for vaccines and they wanted an outdoor cat. She exudes that it is the shelters harsh policies that are
keeping pets from being adopted out and finding their forever home.
In my view, however, it is the owners, and not the shelters fault that unwanted pets swarm animal
shelters. While it is true that some shelters can be over zealous with adoption rules, it is still the
owners fault that these animals ended up in animal control in the first place. According to the
American Humane Society over 29% of pets are returned to animal shelters simply because a
person's place of residence does not allow pets (2). This means that the prospecting owner lied on
the application to adopt. Steve Bruno in his article "Rescue Me" informs that "Rescue dogs suffer

Research Paper On Animal Shelter
If an animal shelter was dangerously low on supplies for their animals then someone needs to help
them out. Giving donations to them would be the right thing to do. It would be awful if you just had
to throw the animals out on the street after being taken care of for so long. They wouldn't know what
to do or how to take care of themselves. The other option would be to throw all of them in the pound
and we all know what happens whenever poor helpless animals get thrown in the pound. Usually the
animals get put down, as in killed, whenever they do not get adopted in a certain amount of time.
One good reason to give the community animal shelter donations is so the animals don't have to live
on the street when they do not have any other place to wonder to. An animals should never have to

Dropping you're poor pet off at some random location is never the right choice. Just because you
can't afford to take care of your pet anymore does not mean you can't afford to send them to an

not knowing what to do or how to get food. The last and final reason why we should start giving
donations to this animal shelter is because there are some animals out there that will never have a
home or that doesn't even know what a family is. An animal shelter would provide a place to call
home. Without food and supplies these people need to take care of these animals, there will be no

The reason we chose this topic was because we find it incredulous the amount of people who don't

compared to LA county, where the number of homeless is huge, with 82,000 homeless (Aguilar).
People become homeless for numerous reasons; Foreclosure, decrease in public assistance, high
healthcare costs, the lack of affordable housing, victims of domestic violence, mental illnesses, and
addiction disorders. As you can see drug addiction is not the only way people become homeless.

Homelessness And The Homeless Council Website
Blowing wind, extreme temperatures, lack of private amenities and feeling of shame; these are all of
the issues that homeless people endure on a daily basis. Homelessness is an issue that is on rise for
many communities throughout the United States. It not only is your stereotypical person but it can
be families who have come of hard times but also our veterans who have served our country.
According to the National Health Care for the Homeless Council website (2016), "A homeless
individual is defined as an individual who lacks housing (without regard to whether the individual is
a member of a family), including an individual whose primary residence during the night is a
supervised public or private facility that provides temporary living accommodations, and an
individual who is a resident in a transitional housing" (para. 1). Issues caused by homelessness have
many communities creating policies and ordinances for those issues that could become a future
problem.
Although, many policies are put into effect to try and help the homeless many of them can also
hinder the oppressed population as well. Being a homeless individual in Dane County, Wisconsin
comes with many obstacles. In Madison, there are many homeless shelters that can be utilized by

The BItterroot Humane Association is our local "pound" that takes in lost, abandoned, abused, or
unwanted companions. They provide pet owners with an outlet should they ever not be able to take
care of their animals. Then, these pets are placed back into loving homes, making everyone happy.
With a limited budget, they have to care for many, many animals. The Bitterroot Humane
Association does not give animals a "time limit" for being put down. Some shelters in Missoula, for
example, euthanize their residents if they do not find homes soon enough. Many animals at the kill
shelters are very loving and sweet, and deserve a little more time to adjust. At no kill shelters, such
as the Bitterroot Humane Association, they are not put down. Several of the dogs and cats have been
there for a long time, which is definitely hard on them. Finally, the humane association also helps

Homeless Persuasive Letter
I am Lance Corporal Josiah Freeman. I live in Oklahoma City and the reason why I am sending this
letter is because the number of homeless people in Oklahoma City is unacceptable and must be
fixed. People should not have to live on the streets because it is unhealthy and can lead to mental
health issues. The homeless shelters are constantly bombarded with hundreds of hungry and
hopeless people every night. Seeing the streets flooded with homeless people has been a sore sight
for Oklahoma City and has been for a long time. The city should build more homeless shelters to
help people get back on their feet, because no one should have to live on the streets and feel like a
second–class citizen. No one should have to live on the streets, it is not healthy, physically or
emotionally. Being homeless can be very stressful and can lead to mental health issues causing
people to make poor decisions to be able to survive. People will constantly get into some sort of

When a victim first decides to seek help through a domestic violence shelter they may start by

abusive situation (Bennett, Riger, Schewe, Howard, & Wasco, 2004). A meeting with an advocate is
beneficial when a victim wants to sit down and have a serious talk about their options for leaving
their abuser and what may happen afterwards. The advocate will go with the victim to legal and
medical appointments as a support system. (Bennett et al, 2004). Bennett et al (2004) reported that
after following a group of women who were using an advocate services for a 10 week period, 24

They also had a huge dining room where the families could eat together. They have a schedule routine for breakfast, lunch and dinner which is served certain times every day. The shelter was upkept, clean, and very well organized. Even though some of the women were married, no ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 13. Social Service Organizations Essay Today there is a great need for social service organizations. The population of a lot of cities and countries has grown, creating the need for more shelters, soup kitchens, and so on. Most of these organizations are church based and community founded. Then there are others that are funded by federal and state government. The Durham Rescue Mission is a church based organization. They provide a lot of help and shelter for the homeless and for low–income families. Reverend Ernie C. Mills founded the mission in 1974. The first mission was just a two–story house. These people need a place to stay till they get back on their feet, and they also may need a little family counseling. Then there is the whole homeless issue, these people have nowhere to go and need food and the bare necessities like everyone else. When it comes to things like shelters and helping others there are always some ethical issues behind them. Then again there are ethical issues behind everything. Here are a couple of them. Whether or not you are doing the right thing by helping these people. If your motive for doing it is right, Should they if they are not Christian be subjected to the Christian faith? I believe that it is the right thing to do. Helping people wherever you can will and always will be the right thing to do. As far the motive whatever it is, if you are doing the right thing then it is ok with me. The person that you help is not going too care if you did it just to impress someone. However if you are not a Christian and you do go into a Christian shelter you had prior knowledge of where you were going. If you don't like what they are telling about God and you don't want to here it then don't go back. The mission it self does a great ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

These numbers are only expected to go up in the coming years, as long the problem of not enough room in shelters exist. In addition to the individual homeless population growing, the streets of Marin will see another consequence that the county faces due to this problem. The community will see a significant increase in the number of homeless families. Marin now more than before is seeing more families living on the streets. According to Marin county, as of January 29, 2015 there was a total of 1,309 homeless people. That is a 38% increase since January 2013. However, that count does not account for those homeless who find alternative shelters, such as, cars, and under passes. Another study revealed that 15% of the overall homeless population are families with children. 35% of those surveyed for the 2015 count said that this was their first time experiencing homelessness. 51% said that they had been homeless for a year or more (Marin County Census). There are so many questions when one sees a homeless person, for example why doesn't he or she get a job and get out of the streets? People that make comments like the one just made probably doesn't really know anyone that is homeless so they do no understand what they go through. In the book " Tell Me Who I Am,'' Elliot Liebow tries to explain what the cost and gains are for women living in a homeless shelter. These women would start to feel sorry for themselves and feel like it's them against the world. Another cost that the women experienced from living at the shelter was their inability to get a job. Some of the women may get hired for a job but the employer was not able to get in touch with them to in form the women. The women could put down the address to the shelter but most wouldn't because they believed that employers would be scared off. I would shelter with: my brother, Eric; my sister, Julia; my mother, Kim; my aunt, Karen; and my uncle, Steve. Karen would be the leader because she is a physician's assistant and is able to effectively communicate. Karen would contribute to the survival of the group by communicating to everyone what is needed for survival. Steve is a Psychiatrist and would contribute to the mental and emotional stability of the group. Kim would contribute to the survival of the group with her resourcefulness and ability to supply the group with appropriate amounts of food and water. Julia would contribute to the survival of the group by maintaining safety. With a degree in construction management, Julia would be able to figure out an adequate shelter. • 38. Proposal For Homelessness Homeless in Anaheim What can be proposed by the city to the public audience to help the homeless in need? In Anaheim, there is a problem with the growing amount of homeless people on the streets of our city; their presence has been increasing within parks, streets, in front of businesses, etc. The reason for why we chose this topic is because our group wants to be able to help these individuals get their life back on track, rather them having these unemployed people living out on the filthy streets. I constantly see individuals begging for money at the exits of freeways and cross lights, instead of seeing them work for their money. To do this, we need to be able to convince our community to propose programs to city hall that will help homeless ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Being caring and helpful is what Anaheim is all about, We are the happiest place on earth! If we had more vagrant shelters we will have less people sleeping in the streets. Less people living in the streets will help prevent problems in the future. Vagrant people have no place to go when it's raining or when it's cold. They go to the nastiest places to find shelter throughout the night. Our proposal seeks to decrease the amount of destitute people living in the streets. With employment aid centers, one can look for a job with an agency that can help you find the right job that suits the person. Not only are they there to assist you in finding a job, they are also there to help you with interview questions and help set up a resume. The cost of this will be around $500,000 dollars per year. Voters came to conclusion to purchase a 24,390– square–foot warehouse at 1000 N. Kraemer Place for $4.25 million to open a homeless shelter home. The shelter will have 200 beds and will shelter homeless people for up to 1 month free of charge. A destitute person can die from hunger every day, but with our help we will be able to feed them on a daily bases. Some critics we may receive are that if it is funded or aided by a faith organization that they will push their religious beliefs upon them. Another critic may be that Homeless shelters are not permanent residences. We believe that everyone should have the chance of having some kind of shelter. • 42. Government Poverty How the government could help solve poverty. Poverty is when someone is not capable of supporting them self. In the United States, there is a large percent of people that need help getting out of poverty. Poverty is like a dangerous drug, once poverty starts pulling you down it's hard to bring yourself up. The government can help improve homelessness in America by creating a bigger budget, opening shelters, and providing clothes The government could invest in things that would benefit the homeless. The government puts money towards things like putting armrest in the middle of benches so that homeless people can't lay on them. They should take this money from buying arms rest and put it towards paying for shelters. Every year the president creates a budget for the united states. The congress must pass this bill. The congress and the president should come together to plan to decrease the amount of money that is spent on the military. This money could be donated to create a company that would wash clothes. The government could also donate some money that would help homeless people start looking for jobs. Homeless shelters are a commonly known resource and the first place a homeless person will probably go once they have exhausted their own resources. Most shelters provide meals, showers, and few other basic needs. Men's shelters are usually only for men 18 or older and you must be sober to stay. Women's shelters generally allow them to bring their children, although in some cases, there is an age limit for boys. Some cities also have family shelters available. There are also special shelters for people such as veteran's shelters and pregnant women shelters. Common Sense For Animals Descriptive Essay In the heart of Washington, on Route 57 across from the famous diner "Candy's" is the local animal shelter known as Common Sense for Animals; the most warming and popular shelter for an animal to stay. Even though it's location is not very presentable, due to the advertisement on dogs and cats for adoption, it is very well known. The buildings and barns are surrounded by colorful flower beds and loose chickens scurrying freely, making it a family friendly shelter. The dusty gravel road with a red brick walkway leads you to the double glass doors that beholds the sound of dogs whimpering for attention and cats crying for love. • 58. An Emergency Case Of Emergency Involving Chemical Release Sorensen et al. (2004) states that two questions play a significant role in concluding whether to evacuate or provide in–place shelter in case of an emergency involving chemical release. The first question to consider is will shelter–in–place provides adequate protection? And second thing to consider is if there is enough time to evacuate. There are various advantages and disadvantages of both the responses (Sorensen et al., 2004). The advantages of instituting shelter–in–place are that it is: It is immediate; people are more relaxed in their familiar surroundings and feel secure; and basic amenities like food, clothing, water, telephone, radio and television are readily available. The disadvantage is that precise, correct, dependable information is more complicated to receive. On the other hand the advantages of evacuating are that people are away from the exposed chemicals, and moved to mass care shelters, plus information is more reliable and medical relief is prompt. Some of the disadvantages of evacuation are that it is time consuming; evacuees may not listen to the directions and decide to stay home and some might decide to move to other locations making it very difficult to track those (Sorenen et al., 2004). Evacuation is usually the last resort considered as it is very complex and involves various processes. The most important concern is that communities should be well planned ahead of time and have an emergency preparedness plan and educate the public about ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

According to Greg Owen and Michelle Decker Gerrad, one of the reasons people are homeless in Minnesota is due to recession. They stated, "In the year 2000, when the U.S. economy was at a high point, nearly a quarter of all adults who were homeless in our state had full–time jobs. The 2012 survey shows us that only 8 percent of those who are homeless today have full–time jobs" this survey shows that not all homeless people are poor it's just they cannot find affordable housing because of the economy. There is a common misconception that all pets in shelters come from a bad past, like having been abused or mistreated, but that is by no means the case (Scott 16). But, on the other side of that, lots of pets do come from abusive owners. They are also found as strays in the streets, lost and hungry. Pets coming from these types of situations are often traumatized, but the volunteers at the shelters try their best to relax them. Another way a shelter could end up with more animals is from being given them by other shelters which are becoming too full. The Short And Medium Term Needs For Emergency Shelter Intro Contemporary designers and architects are addressing the short and medium term needs of people who require emergency and refugee shelters, by evaluating the requirements of people once they have been displaced from their home due to a natural disaster, or any other adversity that they may face. This article will compare and contrast different types of emergency shelters, both short and long term, and appraise the key considerations that contemporary designers and architects must make while creating these refuges. Addressing short and medium term needs for emergency shelter A short–term emergency shelter is usually something that people call transitional accommodation. The short term needs for an emergency shelter consist of: A place to sleep, a roof over their head, showers, cleans drinking water and food. Designer's need to come up with a way that they can gain access to clean water and safe food in the midst of a natural disaster, and how they will get it to them as quickly as possible, whilst making sure there is enough room in the housing estate to look after everyone whose been evicted from their home, or their home has been damaged and ruined in one way or another. Gunner was located in Licking County Humane Society and he needed a forever home. Not only did Gunner need a savior but, the author needed a savior to save her from a heartbreaking relationship. One great thing about adopting is knowing that any dog that will get picked will be grateful for anything and love whoever no matter what. One problem that needs solved immediately is the overpopulation of animals in the shelters around Columbus, Ohio. There are numerous ways to prevent overpopulation in shelters and that's to adopt, get rid of stereotypes of dogs, and open more no kill shelters. One solution that has happened to prevent the overpopulation was using euthanasia on the animals to prevent "increase human exposure to dangerous public health risks, such as rabies." The problem with this solution is that it involves one the problems we are trying to get rid of, and that's euthanasia. The overpopulation is normally caused by a natural disaster or people who can't take care of their pets. When the author went to adopt her dog Gunner, there were 2 or 3 dogs there that was rescued from Hurricane Irma and knowing they are safe and sound, is a great feeling. But they still need a place to call home. The overpopulation leads to shelters trying to decide to be an open shelter or a limited access shelter which includes euthanasia or not. ... • 106. Emergency Shelter : A New Model Called Housing Essay Emergency Shelters in Springfield Maxwell, Klayton, Sierra, Addison The red flag we chose dealing with Housing was the critical need for emergency shelter. Homeless people are not getting enough help to get on their feet. Especially the lack of shelter beds. There are multiple reasons why a person would need an overnight emergency bed, like those fleeing domestic violence, those leaving care institutions into homelessness, etc. A lot of the actual places to use have specified hours that they are willing to accept people. (springfieldmo.gov). One blue ribbon is that, "A new model called Housing First is being implemented in Springfield and around the country to focus on providing people experiencing homelessness with housing as quickly as possible–and then providing services as needed." (CFR). "There could be as many as 15 to 20 homeless people in the Greene County jail at any given time." (Homeless Task Force 2010). There are currently more than 750 homeless, and over 250 are without shelter each night. There is currently more than $1,000,000 in funding to support the homeless people in Greene County and the Ozarks. The ideal state is having no homeless, but that probably won't happen. A no–kill shelter probably started as a wonderful idea, but was soon turned into a very bad thing. The idea of a no–kill shelter is that any animals that is well–tempered enough or healthy enough to be adopted out, would be. The negative aspect of no–kill shelters is that once they run out of room to place the animals, a few things start happening. When shelters are filled to capacity, they are forced to turn away animals in need. These animals that are turned away are left on the streets or in the hand or irresponsible owners who cannot properly take ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 118. The Controversial Issue Of The Homeless The controversial issue of the homeless in New York has been an ongoing battle for several years. Many leaders like Andrew Cuomo have come to the conclusion that obligating homeless people into shelters should be enforced, yet others oppose the idea. They believe such harsh actions shouldn 't be taken. Journalist like Hinckley, who wrote "Can New York Force Homeless People into Shelters?" and Marc Santo, who wrote "Keep New York 's homeless off the streets!" have written articles with fact based information with details on the homeless living conditions. In my opinion, such actions shouldn 't occur. The homeless in New York have the right to choose their living conditions, therefore they shouldn 't be obligated to be put in shelters. New York leaders demand that homeless people must be forced into shelter, but the truth is that money needs to be spent. The mayor, De Blasio, agrees that money shouldn 't be spent. De Blasio unveiled a housing plan that consists of $2.6 billion dollars. Shelters are sometimes worse than the streets themselves. Several homeless who have entered shelters justify this statement. That statement validates why the housing plan is a much safer option. On the other hand, the governor defends the idea of pressuring homeless into shelters. According to Cuomo, "If I get sued for keeping people safe and people in from the cold because they were endangering themselves, so be it." (Hinckley 29–30). This is meant to show his compassion and sympathy. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

How Strict Animal Shelter Policies Can Cause Pets I Was Stressed so I Ate a Wall, Pooped White for a Week, Then Was Returned to the Animal Shelter Allison Gray in her article "How Strict Animal Shelter Policies Can Cause Pets to Suffer," offers a harsh critique that animal shelters hold a very strict adoption process by not allowing unqualified pet owners to adopt. She argues that adoption shelters want to find the perfect owner, but the perfect owner does not exist by her claims. Therefore, pets are not adopted out and are left to suffer in animal shelters. With the guidelines for pet adoption already in place she states that most pets were not adopted out because prospecting owners had an intact pet at home, their current pet was overdue for vaccines and they wanted an outdoor cat. She exudes that it is the shelters harsh policies that are keeping pets from being adopted out and finding their forever home. In my view, however, it is the owners, and not the shelters fault that unwanted pets swarm animal shelters. While it is true that some shelters can be over zealous with adoption rules, it is still the owners fault that these animals ended up in animal control in the first place. According to the American Humane Society over 29% of pets are returned to animal shelters simply because a person's place of residence does not allow pets (2). This means that the prospecting owner lied on the application to adopt. Steve Bruno in his article "Rescue Me" informs that "Rescue dogs suffer from disproportionately from ... • 126. Research Paper On Animal Shelter If an animal shelter was dangerously low on supplies for their animals then someone needs to help them out. Giving donations to them would be the right thing to do. It would be awful if you just had to throw the animals out on the street after being taken care of for so long. They wouldn't know what to do or how to take care of themselves. The other option would be to throw all of them in the pound and we all know what happens whenever poor helpless animals get thrown in the pound. Usually the animals get put down, as in killed, whenever they do not get adopted in a certain amount of time. One good reason to give the community animal shelter donations is so the animals don't have to live on the street when they do not have any other place to wonder to. An animals should never have to endure that kind of pain, maybe not physically, but mentally. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Dropping you're poor pet off at some random location is never the right choice. Just because you can't afford to take care of your pet anymore does not mean you can't afford to send them to an animal shelter? Without animal shelter there would be so many more stray animals out on the street, not knowing what to do or how to get food. The last and final reason why we should start giving donations to this animal shelter is because there are some animals out there that will never have a home or that doesn't even know what a family is. An animal shelter would provide a place to call home. Without food and supplies these people need to take care of these animals, there will be no animal shelter. And all of these reasons I just listed for you would come true. The animals that are in the animals shelter right now would be homeless and without a place to call home. Imagine watching day in and day out as animals passed through your doors, the unmistakeable scent of desolation and grief filling the room like a tidal wave. Imagine standing in front of the donation jar, counting the measly offerings, and hoping they added up to at least five dollars. Ravalli County should do more to encourage adoption of impounded animals, and supply more resources for, the Bitterroot Humane Association. The BItterroot Humane Association is our local "pound" that takes in lost, abandoned, abused, or unwanted companions. They provide pet owners with an outlet should they ever not be able to take care of their animals. Then, these pets are placed back into loving homes, making everyone happy. With a limited budget, they have to care for many, many animals. The Bitterroot Humane Association does not give animals a "time limit" for being put down. Some shelters in Missoula, for example, euthanize their residents if they do not find homes soon enough. Many animals at the kill shelters are very loving and sweet, and deserve a little more time to adjust. At no kill shelters, such as the Bitterroot Humane Association, they are not put down. Several of the dogs and cats have been there for a long time, which is definitely hard on them. Finally, the humane association also helps other animals in ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

I live in Oklahoma City and the reason why I am sending this letter is because the number of homeless people in Oklahoma City is unacceptable and must be fixed. People should not have to live on the streets because it is unhealthy and can lead to mental health issues. The homeless shelters are constantly bombarded with hundreds of hungry and hopeless people every night. Seeing the streets flooded with homeless people has been a sore sight for Oklahoma City and has been for a long time. The city should build more homeless shelters to help people get back on their feet, because no one should have to live on the streets and feel like a second–class citizen. No one should have to live on the streets, it is not healthy, physically or emotionally. Being homeless can be very stressful and can lead to mental health issues causing people to make poor decisions to be able to survive. People will constantly get into some sort of trouble so they can be arrested and go to jail just so they can sleep in a bed or be given food because if the shelters are full the only other place that offers free food and a bed is the county jail. About one in every four women will be victimized by a significant other at some point in their lives (Clevenger & Roe– Sepowitz 2009). Many women are not able to get out of their situation on their own and need help from others. Women in abusive relationships should consider going to a shelter for help to get out of their unsafe situation. Shelters can assist not only with a safe place to live but it can also be a stepping stone to rebuilding their lives. A shelter is there to provide a safe living environment and multiple resources that someone would need to get themselves back on their feet. When a victim first decides to seek help through a domestic violence shelter they may start by reaching out through a crisis hotline service or by meeting with an advocate. Each employee and volunteer is required to go through a training to help them learn to assist with a crisis situation. A crisis hotline is available at all times for any one that feels they need someone to talk to about an abusive situation (Bennett, Riger, Schewe, Howard, & Wasco, 2004). A meeting with an advocate is beneficial when a victim wants to sit down and have a serious talk about their options for leaving their abuser and what may happen afterwards. The advocate will go with the victim to legal and medical appointments as a support system. (Bennett et al, 2004). Bennett et al (2004) reported that after following a group of women who were using an advocate services for a 10 week period, 24 percent of those women were no longer being abused by the original abuser or by another partner.
