My Personal Nursing Philosophy
Nursing began with the reformation by Florence Nightingale. Nursing philosophy, science and
research all define the nursing profession. The profession of nursing has advanced because of the
concepts of philosophy, science, knowledge, and research. These concepts continue to develop into
advanced practice nursing. The nursing process implements critical thinking skills and applies
accountability to nursing. Two important philosophical foundations of science are rationalism and
empiricism. These strategies help create nursing theories. Philosophy is a set of ideas, beliefs or
values. Our own personal values and beliefs must be clear in order to meet the healthcare needs to
our patients (Masters, 2017, p. 112). My own personal nursing philosophy and the beliefs that are
important to me are discussed. The modern legend, Virginia Henderson, has theories similar to my
beliefs. These are the beliefs and values that support my method of nursing. What is your personal
nursing philosophy? Keywords: nursing philosophy, nursing science, nursing research, rationalism,
empiricism Nursing Philosophy and Influences The nursing leaders of the past are responsible for
the development of our current nursing practice and how nursing became a profession. These
theorists developed the nursing knowledge and science that is used today to guide the practice of
nursing. Nursing knowledge and philosophy also framework research and theories based on the

Ethical Dissonance Between Personal And Professional...
Introduction
Values are the starting points for morality and ethics. Values morals and ethics are interrelated and
cannot function independently. As values and morals are gained over a lifetime it is not easy to say
what exactly defines a value. Sometimes the definition of a value is related to something very
personal and precious to a person. Values help t navigate our lives on a personal and professional
level and what we base our decision making and thought processes on. Hence values are dynamic
and change as a person grows and matures in life. Values morals and ethics also guide communities
and regulate their behaviour towards each other. Core principles should be to value life, promote

My Personal Philosophy Of Nursing
For the purpose of the paper, famous philosophies and a personal nursing philosophy is presented,
including the personal definitions of the four phenomena of nursing namely person, environment,
health, and nursing. The said philosophy will then be compared to other professionally–acclaimed
philosophies. Included in the discussion is the importance of a nurse's role in providing health care
to persons, family, and the society and how it is able to address problems in the face of cultural and
spiritual differences. Personal Philosophy A personal philosophy is a concept from theories that is
instrumental to understanding and practicing nursing as a science and an art. Philosophy's
distinctive contribution comes in the education of nurses and teachers and in the development of
nursing theory and research. More importantly, philosophystrongly affects the formulation of
personal values which underlines all undertakings of a nurse in the practice of his profession
(Meehan, 2012; Kutin 2013). The application of a personal philosophy provide meaningful direction
for a nurse's career. It serves as a basis for andsustain exceptional nursing practice, and the ability to
decrease the cases of insensitive and ineffectual practice. Furthermore, it has been claimed that it
can close the relevance gap between nursing practice and nursing scienceand helps in gasping

Personal Values And Principles Of Nursing
For as long as I can remember, I have been overwhelmed with a desire to care for those in need, and
I feel this ultimately led me to the career choice of nursing. I chose nursing as my profession
because I truly believe that the desire to help people through nursing is a calling, and I feel drawn
toward helping those in need. Nursing is an honorable career, and should not be treated as just a job
to earn a paycheck. My mission is to proudly provide nonjudgmental care to those in need
regardless of race, spiritual beliefs, lifestyle choices, financial status, or disability. Before entering to
the profession of nursing, it is important to explore my personal values and principles that will guide
my nursing practice. My philosophy is that nurses have a responsibility to the public to provide safe,
holistic, patient–centered care. This paper will explore the values I feel are necessary in relating to
patients as well as health professionals, my personal work culture, and society as a whole.
The nature of nursing is something that cannot be simplified to one word or phrase. Nursing is more
than a profession; it is more than treating those who are ill, rather it is a model of care and service to
others, and it is continually evolving. The nature of nursing revolves around commitment to public
service and an undeniable desire to help those in need. It is my belief that crucial aspects of nursing
include the prevention of illness, the treatment of the ill, and the promotion of

Professional values are the foundation for practice; they guide interactions with client, colleagues,
other professionals, and the public, by providing the framework for commitment to the Welfare of
others. They are also belief or ideas to which an individual is committed and which are reflected in
patterns of behavior. Institute of medicine (2000). In this article, I will define Altruism, Autonomy,
Human Dignity, Integrity, and Social Justice. I will also identify how these values are demonstrated
in our every day lives by other nurses and myself. According to Dougherty (1992) "Altruism is a

Nurses demonstrate the value of autonomy by acting on their own intuition daily to improve the
quality of all aspects of human life. This is evident when a patient arrives into an urgent care center
with an asthma attack. A prudent nurse will act autonomously by giving the patient a nebulizer
treatment, place him on oxygen, or take the time to find out if there are standing orders and carry
them out without a doctor's order. I demonstrate this value on a daily basis in my work place, which
is at an urgent care center. An example would be a patient comes into the clinic with complain of
chest pain. I will first put the patient in observation with monitor attached, give O2, assess, and do
an EKG, and then I will give a report to the doctor with detailed information of the problem and
what was done.
Human dignity includes personal qualities such as consideration, empathy, human kindness, respect
and trust. It can be reflected in safeguarding the individual's right of privacy, and treating others
with respect, regardless of background. According to Yancey (1997) "It is respect for the inherent
worth of and uniqueness of individuals and populations in professional practice, human dignity is
reflected when the health care professional values and respects all clients and colleagues". Nurses
demonstrate this value by protecting the client's privacy. Designs care with sensitivity to individual
client's needs. Provides competent and sensitive care according to there

Roles And Values Within The Profession Of Nursing
There are many different roles and values within the profession of nursing. Each of these roles and
values has a different job description and purpose, yet they all contain one common link. The link
that connects the different roles in the nursing profession is the fact that they each rely on nursing
research, theories, and evidence based practice to provide safe, quality care to patients. Without
nursing research, theories, and evidence based practice, nursing care would be based on trial and
error methods that often cause more harm than good to the patient. As a provider of care,
professional nurses depend on research, theories, and evidence based practice to guide the care they
provide to patients. Nurses deliver care to their patients based on information they have learned
through many years of school and training. Training for nurses and other providers of care is
founded on theories, research, and evidence based practice in the healthcare field. Theories,
research, and evidence based practice are all important for providing care to patients and each can
be used in a different manner depending on the situation. Clinicians often use research based
evidence to design and implement care that is high–quality and cost effective for patients. Evidence
based practice can be used to provide care to patients in a steadily changing clinical environment.

Essay On Nursing Philosophy
Nursing goes beyond caring for a patient during their illness and managing their disease process.
Nursing includes adapting to a patient's and their family's physical, social, spiritual, environmental
and psychological needs. I believe in treating the whole patient and being supportive of the family's
needs as well. Shelly & Miller (2006) asserts "while critical thinking, decision–making, and
leadership skills are extremely important, the characteristics nurses need most are compassion,
competence, faith, integrity and responsibility" (p. 291). Developing a nursing philosophy is
important to a nurse as it serves as a guide and is the foundation for personal nursing practice.
Following a personal nursing philosophy can enhance your nursing career, make you a better nurse
and improve patient outcomes. However, it is difficult to choose one nursing theorist, as there are
viewpoints from several theorists that align with my personal theories. Choosing one theory is not
only difficult, it is possible to change a theory during your nursing career or draw from various
theories while working with patients and their families depending on the situation. Consequently,
nurses are taught the foundation of multiple theorist and there does not seem to be one correct

A traditional ideal of nursing is caring and nurturing of human beings regardless of race, religion,
status, age, gender, diagnosis, or any other grounds. Nursing care is based on the development of a

Such factors may affect the degree to which nurses are able to fulfill their moral obligations and/or
the number and type of ethical dilemmas they may face. A code of ethics focuses on the morals and
ideals of the profession and provides a working framework for nursing practice. Nurses can use the
code of ethics as a guide for direction and resolution of ethical dilemmas. It is not intended to cover
all the aspects nurse should consider, but can be used as an aid in further consideration of ethical
concerns in nursing. I have created a code of ethics to: a. Identify the fundamental moral
commitments of the profession. b. Provide nurses with a basis for professional and self reflection
and a guide to ethical practices. c. Indicate to the community the values which nurses hold. Code of

During the Victorian times, men were perceived to be better to women when it came to education.
Therefore, educating a woman was completely a waste of resources and what men expected from
women was to be obedient, humble and generous to men (Carol, 2011). Oakley (1975) highlighted
that women did work in jobs associated with supposed female skills for example cleaning. (Up until
the 19th century) . Until the mid 19th century nursing was not an activity, which was thought to
demand either training or skills as nightingale stated that nursing was left to those were too drunken,
(who were drunkards), who had no money for apprenticeship or too dirty (Allen, 2001). Carol
(2011) pointed out that respectable woman were not interested in hospital jobs because it was
considered as menial jobs and nursing was described as duties of servants.
However, Florence Nightingale changed nursing practice, where she was commonly referred to as
lady of the lamp (Finkelman and Kenner, 2013). Nightingale established a domestic mode of
nursing training in which education of nurses was about the information of character at the Saint
Thomas Hospital (Carol, 2011). According to Nightingale the tasks of every nurse was not only to
care for the sick but to act as a public agent of moral reform, and to weaken the power of medical
men (Nelson, 2010). Rafferty (1996) argue that, nursing

My philosophy was derived from my goal to improving quality of life, focusing on functions,
challenging patients and advocating on their behalf. The four concepts of nursing metaparadigm are
nursing, the person (patient), environment, and health. Nursing deals with the process and practice
of care, it emphasizes interrelationship between the nurse and patient with the goal of promoting
health and wholeness. The patient is "the person" in the second concept of metaparadigm. The
patient is viewed by the treatment of the whole person, taking into account mental and social
factors, rather than just the physical. The environment, on the other hand, deals with the internal and
external factors that may influence the nursing practice as it relates to achieving the patients' goals,
while Health, which is the final concept in the metaparadigm defines that wholeness of the
person/patient. These four concepts of nursing metaparadigm do not operate in isolation. Human
influences such as clinical instructors, patients, and staff are very important in displaying virtues and
behaviors. For instance, we learn from clinical instructors (Human Influence), how to become
excellent professionals (Who we are), who provide quality patient care (What we do) Furthermore,
environmental influences such as clinical settings, patient acuity and facility resources define our
professional identity. For example, working in managed care

Integrative Nursing Beliefs
Nursing Is Integrative Caring
Personal beliefs
In my opinion, nursing is a well–educated profession not only to prevent and protect the public from
illness and injury, but to facilitate the curing or alleviating their suffering from illness by patient
centered holistic caring. Nurses are the main work force in the health care system, they are working
in hospitals, nursing homes, community care sites, and other health care settings. As a nurse, I must
respect and listen to the patients as individuals. I need to provide nonjudgemental care to those in
need regardless of their social classes, religious beliefs, financial and cultural differences. I must
consider the patient's background, assessments, personal values and beliefs as a whole to achieve
this goal. I strive to be an health advocate ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
First, professionalism is the most critical quality, because we have to take the responsibility of
caring the patient and uphold values of our profession. As Nightingale stated: "I will not allow low
self–esteem, self–limiting beliefs, or the negativity of others to prevent me from achieving my
authentic goals and from becoming the person I am meant to be." (Finkelman & Kenner, 2013).
That is a high standard and perfect model for nurses. Second, nurses are knowledge workers, I
believe continuous education and research can greatly enhance my skills and ability to provide
better care in my nursing career. Third, I must respect patients' cultural beliefs, economic and social
background as well as sexual orientation. I should never give a care with any form of
discrimination. Fourth, I must collaborte with other health professionals and patient to provide safe
and effective care. Without the collaboration from the patient, his family and health care providers,
this mission is impossible. Lastly, as a nurse I strive to be an educator, an advocate for disease

A nurse is so much more than someone who administers medication, performs physical

They do not just treat injuries and wounds, they heal the mind body and spirit. Being a nurse is not

Nurses and physicians would get no input from the patient on their wishes for treatment and care
(Giddens, 2016). Health Care has recently advanced by adopting the patient and family centered
care model which was designed to "recognize the patient or designee as the source of control and
full partner in providing compassionate and coordinated care based on respects for the patient's
preferences, values, and needs" (Knuths, 2017). This model allows patients to have a voice on what
happens to their bodies and allows them to actively participate in their care. It has also allowed the
patient's family and loved ones to be involved. This involvement has given the patient a strong
support system with their best interest in mind. Moving towards this concept has made nurses more
aware of patient's cultural differences, spiritual differences, family preferences, and personal values.
This system has lead to better overall care and patient satisfaction. Care has become about the
patient and not the provider (Knuths, 2017).
It is important to integrate the concept professionalism into your nursing career because it allows
you to flourish personally as a nurse but more importantly allows the patient to receive the care they
deserve. Throughout the course of one's nursing career there will be many slips and falls. Mistakes
will happen but we as nurses are able to reflect and learn from them in a

Professional Communication : Cultural Sensitivity
Professional Communication: Cultural Sensitivity
Nursing is a dynamic profession, continuously evolving, changing and adapting to a new societal
norms and expectations, discoveries of new medical procedures, developments in highly
sophisticated technical systems, and breakthroughs in pharmaceutical treatments. Another recent
trend that has influenced nursing considerably is the consumer mandate for culturally competent
care in an increasingly diverse, multicultural society. Culturally competent care is important for
nurses to function in high–acuity and high–stress environment to be effective in establishing rapport
with patients, to accurately assess, develop, and implement interventions to meet patients' needs.
(Culturally competent nursing care, 2004). Writer chose an article, "Culturally competent nursing
care for American Indian clients in a critical care setting" retrieved from Critical Care Nurse Journal
(2005), which focuses on American Indian, Native American, and Alaska Native cultural group, the
smallest racial minority groups in the United States, that consists original people indigenous for the
North American continent and has been ignored by healthcare system. Access to healthcare for
Native Americans is more difficult than for the rest of the population because of their geographic
isolation in villages and communities in states that are large in area and have large reservations,
poor transportation, lack of running water, and efficient communication system.

Acting Ethically When Working As A Nurse Essay
The importance of acting ethically when working as a nurse.
Introduction:
Ethics is an essential aspect of health care practice and those working in the nursing profession are
often subject to frequent ethical dilemmas. It is essential for all nurses to be aware of the importance
of ethics in health care and to practice within the ethico–legal parameters that govern the profession.
However, while this is relatively easy in theory, ethics is not a black and white subject and often
one's culture, upbringing, attitudes and beliefs can influence what one views as ethical and this can
therefore influence practice. This report will discuss the importance of ethics in nursing practice.
The definition of ethics will firstly be presented followed ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

As is evident from the definition, ethics is largely subjective and will be influenced by a number of
internal and external factors such as attitudes, beliefs, family upbringing, cultural and ethnic
background and work environment to name but a few of the many (Freegard et al., 2013). It is
important for a nurse to be aware of what ethical practice is and to be aware of the factors that can
impact this in order to better understand their ethical point of view as well as the ethical point of
view of others, to better practice in a manner that is ethical and right.
Policy & Legislation:
As an individual's ethics will play a large part in their practice, there are specific guidelines and
legislation that exist to ensure that nurses, as well as other health professionals, practice in a way
that is ethical (Avery, 2013). These laws further exists to attempt to simplify the ethical issues that
sometimes present in nursing practice and to attempt to guide one's actions. The Nursing and
Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA) provides guidance to nurses by providing a number of
professional codes and guidelines (Avery, 2013). The NMBA has developed a code of ethics for
nurses comprising of eight codes (Avery, 2013). These are as follows; 1) Nurses value quality
nursing care for all people; 2) Nurses value respect and kindness for self and others;

the research, examination and supposition of our journey in obtaining a Baccalaureate in Nursing;
"Baccalaureate programs emphasize evidence–based clinical practice and leadership through
coursework that includes research, statistics, population–based care, nursing management, and the
humanities" (Haverkamp, Ball, 2013). Through interactive discussion posts and essay assignments
involving nursing theories, concepts, ethics, and the benefits of evidence–based practice we
discovered the significance of the five essential elements of the nursing profession. As a
professional nurse the importance of being compassionate and empathetic while caring for patients
was well evidenced throughout the course. I gained insight on the importance of communication not
only with my patients but with their families also, whilst integrating cultural components to enable
holistic nursing care. The importance of fine–tuning critical thinking skills was reiterated in several
assignments by examining evidence–based practice. Throughout each week, we covered a diverse
range of topics guiding us toward our next career goal once obtaining a higher level degree in
Nursing. The first week of Transition into Professional Nursing for Registered Nurses we explored

The American Nurses Association
Individual Analysis Paper As a nurse, we serve a society which is very culturally diverse. We
provide care to many individuals whom have their own unique set of ethics, values, morals, and
beliefs by which may be very different from our own. Because of our professional role, we must use
lifelong learning as a tool to broaden our views, increase our knowledge, and understand the
influences which affect it. To make this possible, we have to continually educate ourselves about the
nursing laws, professional standards, and code of ethics all of which we are committed to. American

shape our evolution. Philosophical forces have been spiritual, religious, and gender in nature just to
name a few. "Spiritual belief and religious practice contributed significantly to the moral foundation
of nursing." (Burkhardt & Nathaniel, 2014, p. 8) When admitting a patient, I am required to ask if
my patient has any spiritual beliefs. We do this because spiritual beliefs have long been thought to
play an important part to promote healing. For this reason, it is essential to incorporate whatever
their belief into their treatment plan. The same can be said for their religious beliefs. Not all
procedures, medications, and treatments are universally accepted among the many different
religions. But, we do know that "in all cultures, the nursing profession has been profoundly
influenced by various aspects of spirituality and religious practice."

Transcultural Nursing : An Individual 's Culture, Values...
Transcultural nursing seeks to provide care that acknowledges an individual's culture, values beliefs
and practices. Nurses need to deliver culturally appropriate, and culturally sensitive care, a standard
that is sometimes difficult due to the cultural and ethnic diversity within our society. Australia is a
multicultural society. The 2011 Census revealed that almost a quarter of the population were born
overseas, and 43.1 per cent of people have at least one overseas–born parent. The ever–increasing
multicultural population in Australia poses a significant challenge to nurses providing individualised
and holistic care to their patients. This requires nurses to recognise and appreciate cultural
differences in healthcare values, beliefs, and customs. Nurses must acquire the necessary knowledge
and skills in cultural competency. Culturally competent nursing care helps to ensure patient
satisfaction and positive outcomes. This essay will outline and define the term transcultural nursing,
discuss its history and relevance in modern nursing practice. focusing the attention for its use in a
Australian context. People from numerous cultures live together in Australia and share their
knowledge, interests and customs. Diversity of Australia's population has reached a point where it is

I chose a nursing course because I firmly believe that the willingness to help people through nursing
is a calling, and I feel drawn towards offering health assistance to those in need. Apparently, nursing

mission is to offer nonjudgmental professional care to the people in need regardless of their
financial status, race, disability, or religious belief.

Philosophy Of Nursing Influence A Nurse's Practice
1. How does describing one's philosophy of nursing influence a nurse's practice? What if a nurse has
never thought about a philosophy?
I believe describing one's philosophy of nursing influences a nurse's practice because it gives a
nurse an understanding what his or her beliefs and values are based on the foundation of beliefs
about people, environment, health, and nursing. Also, it is important to make sure those beliefs are
in line with deeply held beliefs. It is important to grow in personal and professional beliefs and
values I think if a nurse has never thought about a philosophy he or she may not even really know
what their own beliefs and values are along with not really knowing what the philosophy is where
they are employed. I believe it's important to have a philosophy because philosophies help increase
your beliefs and values as a person and as a professional.

I am currently doing a program with Weight Watchers to lose weight. I started January 1, 2017 with

value. For example, Lean Cuisine meals range from 8–11 points depending which one it is and fresh
fruits and veggies are 0 points. I love this program because I don't have to worry about counting
calories which can be very stressful and time consuming I have actually lost 11.4 lbs since I started.
I have notices increased energy levels, less stress and more motivation. I don't drink alcohol (what's

Cultural Diversity And It Influence On Nursing Practice
Cultural Diversity and it Influence on Nursing Practice Culture can be defined as a way of life of a
group of people such as, belief, behavior, values, customs that they accept and can be passed on
from one generation to another. Cultural diversity is the presence of different cultural groups in the
society, cultural diversity is something that nurses have to learn and practice every day in their
carrier, especially when caring for their patients because, every individual or patient think, act and
respond differently to different situations and level of their care. The purpose of this paper is to
identify eight reasons why transcultural nursing is necessary specialty, describe the meaning of
cultural diversity and it relationship to nursing and explain three ways I will provide culturally
sensitive care to my patients (Andrews, Margaret M., and Joyceen S. Boyle, 2016) Transcultural
Nursing as a Necessary Specialty Transcultural nursing (TCN) is the interaction of nursing with
different cultures. Transcultural nursing is a very important part of health care today due to the
increase number of cultures in United State. TCN focuses on people's cultural beliefs, attitude,
value, behavior and practice related to health, illness, healing and human caring (Andrews, Margaret
M., and Joyceen S. Boyle, 2016). This poses a very big challenge for nurses to deliver nursing care
to their patients. These make it necessary for nurses to increase their cultural skills and knowledge.

Personal Ethics
Personal Ethics Ethics is a moral guide that helps a person understands right from wrong. A person's
moral guide is developed by how they were raised, the books they read, the experiences they have
lived through, religious beliefs, and cultural beliefs. These experiences allow a person to learn right
from wrong, good from bad through their own and other's experiences and creating their own set of
ethics. People take their set of ethics into their personal and professional life and continue to
develop them throughout life. This paper will look at ethics, morals, and values from the author's
point of view. A professional moral compass is developed by intertwining the professional education

The author is obligated to treat the patient but must go against her philosophy that everyone
deserves to be treated respectfully and with dignity. An ethical dilemma that the author often thinks
about would be with patient who is admitted with an aortic aneurysm and dissection. The dilemma
is that the patient has the same diagnosis her father died from. When her father was admitted to the
hospital with the aortic aneurysm and dissection, everyone told the family that he would be just fine
and aneurysm would heal. However, after her father's death, she researched the diagnosis and found
that the prognosis is not good. How does the author would handle this situation? Some of the
questions the nurse asks herself are: Does she, who knows and understand the disease process, tell
the family that the patient will be fine or does she, give the family the facts? Does she ask to be
reassigned due to the close nature of the diagnosis? Does she simply treat the patient and not say
anything about his being fine or not? Does she defer any questions to the doctor? Fortunately, this
ethical dilemma has not occurred yet but hopefully the author will be able to handle the situation if
and when it occurs. Each person has their own set of ethics. Ethics begin to develop as soon as a
person is born and continue to develop throughout life. Ethics is that little voice

which reflect professional and caring attitudes. The importance of building and maintaining working
relationships with the patient should not be underestimated. The patient being cared for should be at
the centre of the nursing care (Lloyd, 2007). Furthermore, nurses should hold in mind how to

Nurses should create an environment that aid to reverse stress or harm and create a supportive space
for healing to occur. Families and communities are other examples of external environment that can
be helpful tools in improving care and managing healthcare costs. Communities help prevent health
problems from happening or re–occurring by implementing educational programs, developing
policies, and administering services. As nurses we must remember it is very important for the
patient to be in an environment that is conducive to his or her recovery.
Health refers to the patient's wellness as well as his or her access to healthcare. Health can range

My Personal Values On Nursing
Identifying personal values, beliefs and concepts ignite the individual to make a well–rounded
decision and live an authentic life. As a nurse, I want to promote the best possible care for my
patients because I believe in maintaining life balances. Life balances acknowledge the individual's
prioritizes by linking each lifestyles together. In physiological terms, maintaining equilibrium and
homeostasis is critical in achieving a state of balanced. Therefore, my values about person, health,
nursing, and environment underlies the concept of sustaining life harmony. Educating the patient
and the self about healthy work/ life balance through the conceptual framework of the four nursing
metaparadigms will help me promote optimal nursing care.
My personal values on nursing metaparadigms begins with understanding the self. An individual
must first find true meaning and passion in the self before prioritizing other values. Personal needs,
wholeness, development, and behavior are all important factors in a person's overall growth. In a
nursing standpoint, I want to encourage patients to explore the meaning of the self by identifying the
passion that drives the individual to actively participate in achieving optimal health standards. In
addition, health is a crucial concept for living an ideal and authentic life. My beliefs on health reside

Personal And Professional Values In Nursing
A philosophy is a statement of values and beliefs to help guide one through their career. A personal
philosophy should mirror the views of the individual and help shape their work to coincide with
their personal values and beliefs (Marquis & Huston, 2015). Nursing is a unique career that makes
nurses examine themselves and their own life in order to provide the best care for all patients. It is
important for a nurse to realize their own beliefs and learn how to incorporate them into their care in

and professional values and beliefs. She has learned that both personal and professional values will
evolve over time. The student nurse feels as if combining her personal and professional values will
continue to aid in developing her philosophy. The student nurse has a personal definition of nursing
as collaboratively caring of all individuals in a holistic manner, focusing on the prevention of illness
and injury, diagnosis of symptoms, treatment of condition, and promotion of health and wellness.
Nursing from a practical stance can be defined as the act of assessing a patient, diagnosis of the
patient, providing patient outcomes, identification of a treatment plan, implementation of a plan, and
evaluation of the plan. Anyone with a set of skills can practice the act of nursing, but it takes a
special person to actually be a nurse. A nurse should be invested in the patient, be an advocate for
the patient, and above all be caring towards the patient. A patient will surely not remember which
nurse gave the best shot, but they will remember which nurse was the most caring. Nursing is more
than administering medications and performing skills, but rather it is an art of knowledge and
critical thinking combined with compassion and care.

My Personal Philosophy Of Nursing
Introduction In this paper, famous philosophies and my personal nursing philosophy are presented,
including personal definitions of the four phenomena of nursing which includes the person,
environment, health, and nursing. A Philosophy's distinctive contribution comes in the education of
nurses and teachers and in the development of nursing theory and research. More importantly,
philosophy strongly affects the formulation of personal values which underlines all undertakings of
a nurse in the practice of his/her profession (Meehan, 2012). My personal philosophy of nursing is
to attain an exceptional nursing practice and the ability to decrease the cases of unresponsive and
incompetent practice. This also serves as my career guide, which will aid in giving meaningful
direction. Furthermore, it has been claimed that a philosophy can close the relevance gap between
nursing practice and nursing science and help in gasping knowledge regarding patients, their
environment, the workplace, and health and wellness (Meehan, 2012). Cherie, Mekonen, and
Shimelse (2009) define philosophies of nursing as "statements of beliefs about nursing and
expressions of values in nursing that are used as bases for thinking and acting". These can also be
defined as a set of general beliefs and values that direct an individual and his or her behavior in life

Analysis Of The Documentary ' The American Nurse '
Melissa Weber 10/20/14 Professional Nursing Professor Gilmartin "The nurse has a basic concern
for people as human beings, confidence in the fundamental power of personality for good, respect
for religious beliefs of others, and a philosophy which will sustain and inspire others as well as
herself" (ANA, 1940; p. 980). The documentary "The American Nurse", explores some of the
biggest issues the United States faces today– aging, war, poverty, and prisons– through the lives of
five very different nurses and their work as health care providers. The film examines real life people
in their everyday lives as nurses which changes the way one looks at and thinks about the entire
concept of nursing. Nursing is not merely a job, nor is it simply an occupation or a profession. To be
a nurse, one must uphold the finest of standards and ethics, dedicating their entire lives to helping
and serving others. Therefore, it cannot simply be a behavior; it is a lifestyle. When it comes to a
nursing philosophy, every nurse has their own values, beliefs, and ideals that are different and
unique from others. It presents a great challenge when incorporating these ideas into a professional
practice. "Professional values are standards for actions accepted by the practitioner and professional
group that provide a framework influencing the behavior of the group." ("Professional Values: The

  • 2. My Personal Nursing Philosophy Nursing began with the reformation by Florence Nightingale. Nursing philosophy, science and research all define the nursing profession. The profession of nursing has advanced because of the concepts of philosophy, science, knowledge, and research. These concepts continue to develop into advanced practice nursing. The nursing process implements critical thinking skills and applies accountability to nursing. Two important philosophical foundations of science are rationalism and empiricism. These strategies help create nursing theories. Philosophy is a set of ideas, beliefs or values. Our own personal values and beliefs must be clear in order to meet the healthcare needs to our patients (Masters, 2017, p. 112). My own personal nursing philosophy and the beliefs that are important to me are discussed. The modern legend, Virginia Henderson, has theories similar to my beliefs. These are the beliefs and values that support my method of nursing. What is your personal nursing philosophy? Values morals and ethics are interrelated and cannot function independently. As values and morals are gained over a lifetime it is not easy to say what exactly defines a value. Sometimes the definition of a value is related to something very personal and precious to a person. Values help t navigate our lives on a personal and professional level and what we base our decision making and thought processes on. My Personal Philosophy Of Nursing For the purpose of the paper, famous philosophies and a personal nursing philosophy is presented, including the personal definitions of the four phenomena of nursing namely person, environment, health, and nursing. The said philosophy will then be compared to other professionally–acclaimed philosophies. Included in the discussion is the importance of a nurse's role in providing health care to persons, family, and the society and how it is able to address problems in the face of cultural and spiritual differences. Personal Philosophy A personal philosophy is a concept from theories that is instrumental to understanding and practicing nursing as a science and an art. • 5. Personal Values And Principles Of Nursing For as long as I can remember, I have been overwhelmed with a desire to care for those in need, and I feel this ultimately led me to the career choice of nursing. I chose nursing as my profession because I truly believe that the desire to help people through nursing is a calling, and I feel drawn toward helping those in need. Nursing is an honorable career, and should not be treated as just a job to earn a paycheck. My mission is to proudly provide nonjudgmental care to those in need regardless of race, spiritual beliefs, lifestyle choices, financial status, or disability. Before entering to the profession of nursing, it is important to explore my personal values and principles that will guide my nursing practice. My philosophy is that nurses have a responsibility to the public to provide safe, holistic, patient–centered care. This paper will explore the values I feel are necessary in relating to patients as well as health professionals, my personal work culture, and society as a whole. The nature of nursing is something that cannot be simplified to one word or phrase. Nursing is more than a profession; it is more than treating those who are ill, rather it is a model of care and service to others, and it is continually evolving. The nature of nursing revolves around commitment to public service and an undeniable desire to help those in need. It is my belief that crucial aspects of nursing include the prevention of illness, the treatment of the ill, and the promotion of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 6. Essay Professional Values Professional Nursing Values Yvonne Simms NUR/403 Undergraduate Nursing Studies April 29, 2010 Joseph DeCostanza Professional values are the foundation for practice; they guide interactions with client, colleagues, other professionals, and the public, by providing the framework for commitment to the Welfare of others. They are also belief or ideas to which an individual is committed and which are reflected in patterns of behavior. Institute of medicine (2000). In this article, I will define Altruism, Autonomy, Human Dignity, Integrity, and Social Justice. I will also identify how these values are demonstrated in our every day lives by other nurses and myself. According to Dougherty (1992) "Altruism is a concern ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Nurses demonstrate the value of autonomy by acting on their own intuition daily to improve the quality of all aspects of human life. This is evident when a patient arrives into an urgent care center with an asthma attack. A prudent nurse will act autonomously by giving the patient a nebulizer treatment, place him on oxygen, or take the time to find out if there are standing orders and carry them out without a doctor's order. I demonstrate this value on a daily basis in my work place, which is at an urgent care center. An example would be a patient comes into the clinic with complain of chest pain. I will first put the patient in observation with monitor attached, give O2, assess, and do an EKG, and then I will give a report to the doctor with detailed information of the problem and what was done. Human dignity includes personal qualities such as consideration, empathy, human kindness, respect and trust. It can be reflected in safeguarding the individual's right of privacy, and treating others with respect, regardless of background. According to Yancey (1997) "It is respect for the inherent worth of and uniqueness of individuals and populations in professional practice, human dignity is reflected when the health care professional values and respects all clients and colleagues". • 8. Roles And Values Within The Profession Of Nursing There are many different roles and values within the profession of nursing. Each of these roles and values has a different job description and purpose, yet they all contain one common link. The link that connects the different roles in the nursing profession is the fact that they each rely on nursing research, theories, and evidence based practice to provide safe, quality care to patients. Without nursing research, theories, and evidence based practice, nursing care would be based on trial and error methods that often cause more harm than good to the patient. As a provider of care, professional nurses depend on research, theories, and evidence based practice to guide the care they provide to patients. Nurses deliver care to their patients based on information they have learned through many years of school and training. Training for nurses and other providers of care is founded on theories, research, and evidence based practice in the healthcare field. Theories, research, and evidence based practice are all important for providing care to patients and each can be used in a different manner depending on the situation. Clinicians often use research based evidence to design and implement care that is high–quality and cost effective for patients. Evidence based practice can be used to provide care to patients in a steadily changing clinical environment. (PDF page 8–9). • 9. Essay On Nursing Philosophy Nursing goes beyond caring for a patient during their illness and managing their disease process. Nursing includes adapting to a patient's and their family's physical, social, spiritual, environmental and psychological needs. I believe in treating the whole patient and being supportive of the family's needs as well. Shelly & Miller (2006) asserts "while critical thinking, decision–making, and leadership skills are extremely important, the characteristics nurses need most are compassion, competence, faith, integrity and responsibility" (p. 291). Developing a nursing philosophy is important to a nurse as it serves as a guide and is the foundation for personal nursing practice. Following a personal nursing philosophy can enhance your nursing career, make you a better nurse and improve patient outcomes. However, it is difficult to choose one nursing theorist, as there are viewpoints from several theorists that align with my personal theories. Choosing one theory is not only difficult, it is possible to change a theory during your nursing career or draw from various theories while working with patients and their families depending on the situation. Consequently, nurses are taught the foundation of multiple theorist and there does not seem to be one correct model. It is a matter of finding one that fits your ... Nurses can use the code of ethics as a guide for direction and resolution of ethical dilemmas. It is not intended to cover all the aspects nurse should consider, but can be used as an aid in further consideration of ethical concerns in nursing. I have created a code of ethics to: a. Identify the fundamental moral commitments of the profession. b. Provide nurses with a basis for professional and self reflection and a guide to ethical practices. c. Indicate to the community the values which nurses hold. Code of Ethics 1. Nurses will respect individual needs, values, and culture in the provision of nursing care. Nursing care for any individual should not be compromised because of ethnicity, gender, spiritual values, disability, age, economic, social or health status, or any other grounds. Therefore, educating a woman was completely a waste of resources and what men expected from women was to be obedient, humble and generous to men (Carol, 2011). Oakley (1975) highlighted that women did work in jobs associated with supposed female skills for example cleaning. (Up until the 19th century) . Until the mid 19th century nursing was not an activity, which was thought to demand either training or skills as nightingale stated that nursing was left to those were too drunken, (who were drunkards), who had no money for apprenticeship or too dirty (Allen, 2001). The patient is "the person" in the second concept of metaparadigm. The patient is viewed by the treatment of the whole person, taking into account mental and social factors, rather than just the physical. The environment, on the other hand, deals with the internal and external factors that may influence the nursing practice as it relates to achieving the patients' goals, while Health, which is the final concept in the metaparadigm defines that wholeness of the person/patient.
