My Hawaii Vacation
When I learned that my family and I would be going to Hawaii, I looked forward to going to the
beach, sightseeing, and the warm weather. I never knew that this vacation would end up teaching me
valuable life lessons. It was the summer of 2014 when I went to Hawaii, and I was so excited
because I love traveling and I had always wanted to go there. There is a six hour time difference
which was hard to get used to because we ended up landing in Hawaii at what would have been four
in the morning in Ohio. Before we landed in Hawaii, the vacation did not start off very well.
When we arrived at the airport in Los Angeles for our connecting flight, we were kept on the plane
for almost an hour, even though our layover was only forty–five minutes. We knew we did not have
much time anyways; but after the delay, we thought we would miss the only flight to Hawaii that
night. When we were finally able to get off the plane, a girl around the age of twenty–five who was
on the flight was yelling at everyone and trying to push everyone out of the way so she could get out
first. She ended up getting off the plane before us even though she was sitting in the very back.

Located in the Pacific Ocean, Hawaii and the Hawaiian Islands are the cone–shaped tops of gigantic
ocean volcanoes.
Located in the southeast region of the Island of Hawaii, Kilauea sits on the flank (or the side) of the
active Mauna Loa volcano, and is one of five shield volcanoes that together form the Island of
Hawaii.
Kilauea is one of the most active volcanoes on Earth, and it is the youngest. Kilauea stands just
under 4,200 feet tall above sea level at its highest point.

This smog affects many areas of the Hawaiian Islands, including Oahu and Honolulu whenever
winds come out of the south or southeast.
The estimated age of the earliest above ground (subaerial) eruptions of Kilauea is between 50,000–
100,000 years.
The last eruption began on January 3, 1983 to the present. During this time, the lava flows have
unfortunately caused destruction of nearly 200 houses, resurfaced over 13km of highway with lava,
destroyed the National Park visitor center, and a 700 year–old Hawaiian Temple. It has also added
new coastline to the island. There are no signs that the current eruption is slowing or will end

jigsaw piece of the Earth's crust that is slowly moving in a northwesterly direction. It moves about

this hot spot makes molten lava and rock (magma) that rises through the Pacific Plate and erupts

Volcanoes of Hawaii With a population of 142 million people Hawaii is the home to the largest
volcanic islands. Hawaii is a state with eight main islands, which are Hawai'i, Maui, Oahu, Kauai,

that Hawaii is sitting on a hot spot under the Pacific plate, which has come to be known as the hot
plate theory (Macdonald 1). In Stanley's text Earth System History, a hot spot is defined as a small
geographical area where the crust is elevated by the rising magma that can cause a volcano to erupt
(192). These hotspots pushed the molten lava to the surface, which caused the sea volcanoes to
form. The volcanoes overtime rose to the surface of earth and formed the Hawaiian Islands. Then
the Pacific plate rotated northwest, which made room for more hotspots to occur, therefore, making
